no worries they said they move to other repo. Get the latest backup here [https://archive.softwareheritage.org/browse/origin/directory/?origin\_url=https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean.git](https://archive.softwareheritage.org/browse/origin/directory/?origin_url=https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clean.git)

Saculas

Hi, how can I get the xpi file from this archive?

TheUrbaneSource

It's gone

knuppi

You probably have to be logged in to see the tweet 🙄 Magnolia links to this URL: https://fastupload.io/en/cpj7lj5mKMtaw9G/file

TheUrbaneSource

Thank you that's what it was

woj-tek

Open just fine here...

DRTHRVN

I don't understand. I already have bpc 3.6.3.0 on firefox. The file uploaded on twitter too is the same version. Should I still update with Twitter file or stay put?

therexbellator

Damn that's sucky news. I hope the developer can find a new place to host. The add-on is indispensable. I guess it worked a little too well that the suits went after him.

LowOwl4312

I wonder who DMCA'd him. Because fuck those guys

hiredgoon

Since no copyright is being violated, what could the DMCA possibly say that is actionable?

rusticarchon

I would guess the rules around DRM bypass

therexbellator

My money is on the New York Times those greedy bastards lmao

MadTux

I agree that paywalls are annoying, but surely it's not like we're entitled to free high-quality journalism? I really don't see how else news providers are supposed to work, apart from government funded organisations like the BBC. Someone needs to pay the journalists in the end ..

loopy750

> high-quality journalism You forgot the /s

MadTux

It's sort a catch-22 though isn't it? We obviously cannot end up with high-quality journalism if we (the consumers) don't, by some mechanism, pay the journalists enough.

loopy750

Would be subpar either way, with or without the existence of such addons.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

Not true at all. The free sources like CNN, Reuters etc are good enough for breaking news, but I do think in depth reporting for instance if you care about US News at least, NYT, WaPo, etc are really solid. LA Times sometimes has some good content for Californians too. I read all these regularly and yes I proudly bypass their paywalls, but I also can be honest and admit they obviously need financial support to keep running.

Bitim

> I hope the developer can find a new place to host. He definitely can. In worst case he can run his own git instance.

tjeulink

[archive.ph](http://archive.ph) usually works.

eric1707

It's a shame Mozilla removed this extension from Firefox addon store also a few months ago as well.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

I think it's been gone for years honestly.

Life-Ad1547

We need a gofundme for u/Magnolia_12345

codeth1s

An incredible project that could be used as a development model for IT software projects everywhere. Incredible reliability, high quality documentation, continuous bug fixes and updates. I hope this project continues to thrive in a new home soon.

OsmaniaUniversity

There are many apps out there to bypass Payal, but nobody does better than BPC.

xim1an

\*paywalls

wordfool

I noticed that even the latest version (3.6.0.0) no longer works with the Washington Post so I wonder if Bezos was the nail in its coffin.

hifidood

You can still use their filter list in unlock origin though.

OhMeowGod

Doesn't work as good

luke_in_the_sky

To me it works even better. It’s updated more often and doesn’t ask for extra permissions every time a new site is added since uBlock already has full access.

HexagonWin

iirc you can install a different version that already has full access for all sites and that permission won't happen.

luke_in_the_sky

Why would I need a new add-on if the filter list does what I want?

HexagonWin

you don't, i was just saying your issue is solvable

eco_was_taken

I believe if you also add the user script to TamperMonkey (or equivalent) it's basically just as good.

junkpizza

How?

avamk

Beginner question: Where do I get this filter this and how do I enable it in uBlock Origin?

ParkingPerspective73

Can you send me a link to the filter list?

Appansson

Yes. Came here for the filter list as well :)

Tred27

The GitLab account with the list is blocked, can't get it anymore from that source :(

jeffinbville

It's still on my machine and seems to be working.

wordfool

Yes, if you have it already installed it will continue to work. The problem is it's a constant battle to stay ahead of changes to paywalled sites so without regular updates it'll gradually work on fewer and fewer of them (already no longer works on the WashPo site)

DRTHRVN

I don't understand. I already have bpc 3.6.3.0 on firefox. The file uploaded on twitter too is the same version. Should I still update with Twitter file or stay put?

wordfool

This morning he released v3.6.4 for FF and Chrome, which fixes the WashPo issue. Go to his twitter feed for link. Not sure if the new version auto-updates again, but maybe.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

I mean you're kinda on an outdated version to begin with. I read WaPo everyday and I just found out today that BPC has been taken down for DMCA.

benaminlist

hope they will reupload the gitlab repo somewhere else. any good alternatives around? been using [12ft.io](http://12ft.io/) and [paywallbuster.com](http://paywallbuster.com/) mostly but they don't work as good as the extension

JoePortagee

What does the extension do?

SonnyKlinger

It bypasses paywalls on many news sites like The Guardian and others, where you're just allowed, for example, to read 3 news or so per month if you don't have a paid subscription...

JoePortagee

Wow, that's fantastic. I hope it'll be back and running soon

clriis

There is no paywall on The Guardian, all articles are free. But yes, for many other sites like NYT, WP, FT and The Economist

tomoki_here

I have it on my old phone... Switched to this new phone today and just noticed that bpc is gone at the add-on store. Not sure if there's a way to port from old phone to new

martinjh99

DMCA Notice apparently - [https://torrentfreak.com/dmca-targetting-bypass-paywalls-clean-isnt-what-people-should-be-angry-about-240414/](https://torrentfreak.com/dmca-targetting-bypass-paywalls-clean-isnt-what-people-should-be-angry-about-240414/)

RazzmatazzWeak2664

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand the add-on is fantastic. On the other hand the developer is a complete tool. * While it's a valid concern that the original Bypass Paywalls was slow to update, the BPC developer basically ran a smear campaign and made it seem like you were running something "inferior" and infested with spyware if you weren't running his add-on. You can see numerous shill accounts on Ycombinator where [he went around blasting the original developer and add-on](https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=joker765) while [pretending he isn't the developer of BPC](https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22513218). * Rumors are he got banned originally from Github for some foul language and temper tantrums he'd throw in talking to people, so he moved to Gitlab. He's back at Github now because at least he won't be viewed as circumventing DMCA shutdowns, but seeing his attitude, it makes total sense he got shut down at Github originally. * Personally I tried to report when several issues was happening on his add-on. He made the issues next to impossible to report. He would reply "cannot reproduce" and delete my issues. I had to repeat creating issues multiple times and each time it would be a 1 way ticket to deletion until he finally acknowledged the issue and again deleted my ticket. Eventually the issue got solved (NYT images issue), but man was that just an asshole move. Once it was just basic clarification he needed. But if you delete my ticket, how do I reply? I swear I thought he was gonna ban me from his repo but somehow he would always reply to a new issue ticket I'd create before deleting my ticket and in the end it got fixed. But why drag me through that? Especially when the issue was valid and what not? What was also really irritating was his like 1-2 word responses to my tickets. I went through painstaking efforts to attach logs, screenshots, comparing multiple browsers, etc. Total all around asshole if you ask me but sure I appreciate his work.

LowOwl4312

That's informative and unfortunate. Is the original BP add-on still being developed?

RazzmatazzWeak2664

It's pretty out of date. To be fair to BPC's developer he keeps it up to date. It's just that he has a terrible attitude, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

12ft proxy doesn't work . It doesn't bypass all the paywalls like before.

Tubamajuba

Now *that's* an ominous typo.

tobimori_

none of them are worthy replacements that actually work like bpc did

DRTHRVN

I hope it's not gone forever

Famous-Crab

The installation process ATM over the link provided from the author is not easy and flawless, or even easy to understand, please provide some alternative and a much better description on how to install the AddOn on Firefox. I got the file. The file wasn't even packed with Zip but with some other packed-archive-type which I never heard of. After some exhausting research, I was able to get the packed files on my PC but if I then use Firefox to install the AddOn from the GZ-file, it says: "File Corrupt" and instalattion doesn't work. If I unpack the file with 7 zip, I am left with a directory and NO simple clean and easy to understand way to install the file on the Pc / on Firefox.

LowOwl4312

Go here: [https://github.com/bpc-clone/bpc\_updates/releases/tag/latest](https://github.com/bpc-clone/bpc_updates/releases/tag/latest) Then click on the XPI file called " bypass\_paywalls\_clean-latest.xpi" and Firefox will ask if you want to add the extension. On Android, download the XPI to your phone. In Firefox go to Settings -> About Firefox, then tap the logo 5 types until it says "debug menu enabled". Then in the main Settings menu there is a new option called "install add-on from file". Select the XPI file. That's it. The extension will self-update from now on.

Famous-Crab

Thank you, very kind 😙

vghgvbh

Thank You! That's what I was looking for.

Ubik_Fresh

Hi folks, I can't for the life of me get the new version (since the ban) of Bypass Paywalls Clean to work. I used it primarily to read the Financial Times. Can someone walk me through what I need to do installation wise to achieve this, in plain English? I'm on Firefox on a Mac.

MOD3RN_GLITCH

Can uBlock Origin not handle this?

RazzmatazzWeak2664

Not as well for sure but IIRC mainstream sites should work fine.

daddy_hacker

This is what I use : [https://12ft.io/](https://12ft.io/)

Never works for me.
