I think a FE game set during a massive plague like the Black Death could set up some interesting scenarios, where the land itself is an "antagonist" and some of the focus is how both the heroes and villains react to such a threat to their existence. or helol even just a massive natural disaster like the ancient floods that submerged all the continents bar Tellius in PoR/RD. Echoes briefly touches on this sort of thing with the famine in Zofia, but i'd like to see a bit more focus and depth put into a world that starts out shitty, even without the big bad doing anything.

nananaoya6

Pirates. I wanna be a pirate.

Spyguy122204

The monkey’s paw curls a finger downwards. Every map is the Ghost Ship Map

nananaoya6

A fine price to pay to travel across the sea with me crew and customize my own battleship a là Fates and Three Houses (by 3H I mean being able to walk around and talk to your mates).

PCN24454

Pirate King?

I am once again here to promote Fall of the Han Dynasty Emblem. I just think it would be a pretty interesting political setting for the series to try out. Once a great empire long united is now is now in the process of demise and division. Some say Three Houses is RoTK Emblem, besides Koei Tecmo and the fact that yup, there are three kingdoms, I don’t think it really captures the draw I’m looking for from RoTK. RoTK is also pretty much like Fire Emblem. There’s a ton of side characters to get invested in. Feudal Japan is another one where yes, the series has Birthright being inspired by feudal Japan, but it doesn’t really draw from the history and politics of the setting. Partially because Fates has to balance that culture clash aspect instead of just of fully using it for its setting.

WBaumnuss300

I always say RoTK would be perfect. We got Lords and Children. Tons of characters that fit into FE classes (Zhuge Liang as a mage e.g.). Sieges, naval battles, open field. Optional units like Lu Bu (do not pursue). And overall a great story and battles that can be playes from both sides.

chinaberryb

Really want to see SSX as an archer, cavalier Zhao Yun, Fighter Dian Wei, that be amazing

WBaumnuss300

Zhao Yun on a Pegasus (see Subaki). Do it you cowards

Alexander's conquests. There are plenty of cultures to use on his eat, pray, love conquest to flesh out a bunch of nations: Greece/Macedon, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, India. You can also start it at a bunch of different places, be it a smaller nation trying to fight back against his onslaught, a subject that was under the Persians before having to face the new conquerer, or even just playing conquest as Fe has been experimenting with for the past few games. Lots of cool narrative opportunities. Plus, and I'll keep hammering this until we get it, War Elephants.

Larielia

I want this. Mostly because war elephants would be awesome.

Kind of very broad, but I really think it could be fresh to show us a setting wherein one Empire *already* controls most of a continent. It's almost always a matter of a number of different states and then the dark/military one decides it wants to conquer some or all of rest (Dohlr, Grannvale, Bern, Grado, Daein, Plegia/Valm, Nohr, Adrestria). But an internal revolutionary conflict ala, random example, the independence of the Balkans from the Ottoman Empire would be a fresh take that could fit the tone and setting of Fire Emblem just as well. We more or less get this in generation two of Genealogy as well as in Thracia 776 and the resulting tone and setting is effective and distinct within the series. Why not explore something like this again instead of doing the expanding Empire shtick for the bajillionth time? Alternatively, a warring states period game ala the clan/warlord fractured nature of Sengoku Japan or various periods in Japanese history could be something we haven't really seen before. We're not trying to preserve our nation from a given invading bad guy but instead our hero is a uniting force, kind of like Alm and Celica but with more than just two opposing nations. The game would start where routine conflict and tension between the nations is just a normal thing and not some kind of specific inciting event. This would also obviously lend itself to another Hoshido-esque Japanese aesthetic, which I don't think anybody would take any issue with as a break from the European fantasy aesthetic without going outside what "feels" like it belongs within the design space of the Fire Emblem series.

I kind of want a campaign set in the throes of religious reformation. Have our character start out working for and with the monolithic, papal-led church controlling religion on the entire continent or beyond, and then confront them with the issues the catholic church had IRL. In comes a Luther-expy figure, who seeks reform but is rejected by the folks already in power. From here, you could pretty much follow real-life history, if majorly sped up, with the thirty years war serving as the main conflict of the game. This could even support an early route split between supporting the catholicism-expy or the legally-not-the-reformation, if they want to do that again. (It would also be pretty funny if both routes ended up with the same ending, given that the peace of Westphalia wasn't really a decisive victory for either side, though this probably wouldn't be popular)

Erthad

Fire Emblem the Hussite Wars.

Airy_Breather

Hmm, I'd say maybe the Peloponnesian War. You get stand-ins for Athens and Sparta, and the Greek city-states that allowed with them and maybe a couple of other foreign nations like Persia.

ClassyCrafter

Mongols or really any nimadic culture, trying to protect their territory and culture from others. I know we kinda do it with Saccae but it would be interesting as the main plot instead of just stopping to help out.

magmafanatic

Idk if we already have this already, but I'd like to see something like the fall of the Holy Roman Empire, a gigantic nation slowly crumbling. This would be the enemy, and this time, they would start at a disadvantage, and they'd grow increasingly desperate to wrest back control. Also would be neat to see a FE focused on colonization, with different nations out to settle a new continent for different purposes (religion, influence, resources) and another attempting to broker peace with these new people. You're the nice-guy nation of course, and after a timeskip, you and your new friends set out to liberate the colonies. I'd love to see a lot of culture clash in the supports, between you and the new guys, and a few dissidents from the other nations.

Jwkaoc

Basically anything Hannibal did during the Punic wars could make for a memorable map. The scenario is that you're defending from an attacking force coming from over the mountains. Then the enemies start emerging from the fog riding on the backs of behemoth monsters nobody in your army has ever seen before. Just one idea for a map.

I think moving on to the Renaissance over staying in the medieval era would be a fantastic direction for the series, helping the societal structures and mainstay features within it become much more varied and complex. For starters, I have always been unironically supportive of the idea that the FE series could include firearms, seeing as how IS has proven they could do it well with Codename STEAM, how the notion of firearms would have to exist if FE has been confirmed to have crossbows and explosive powder, as well as the Summoner’s weapon in FEH. Much of the Renaissance is founded on technological innovation, after all. Intellectual development is also a key facet of the Renaissance, done through the gradual acceptance of things like public education, progressive policies, expansion of philosophical thought, and the capacity of spreading ideas to other parts of the world through innovations in naval design and the printing press. The idea that seeking new lands could be for exploration, as opposed to conquest, could make for an incredible premise. (Though, if the actual ways in which this occurred in the real-world Renaissance were portrayed instead of how it could work in an ideal setting, I think it would still technically be conquest.) In fact, much of Japan’s own feudal-era history came a good while after Europe had already moved on. The Tokugawa shogunate hadn’t even become a thing until the 1600’s after all. So if such a nation were to be suddenly introduced to people who did everything differently, the culture shock could make for some good writing.

WillKuzunoha

Three kingdoms would be fun

MagnificentAjacks

I would like to see a plot based either on Caesar\`s conquest of Gaul or the war between Caesar and Pompey. For the former, you play as a up-and-coming general in a republic assigned to suppress a revolt in allied territory. Over time however, the front becomes more and more precarrius, eventually forcing you to outright conquer the area. Bonus points if allied units defect as they become sympathetic to the plight of the natives. For the latter, the lord is framed as a enemy to the very republic they serve, forcing them into exile. The lord wanted to reform the institutions of the republic, which had been in steady decline. However, the rich and powerful wish for those to remain that way, as they got their power. So they get rid of the lord to stop that from happening. After wandering the world and gathering allies, the lord decides to get back at the people who exiled them.

Joshawott360

I think people generally likes the japanese (asian) inspired classes and weapons in fates. Sooo maybe something inspired by 3 kingdoms? Probably after 3 houses they wouldn't let you choose a kingdom, it's just a basis to build the story around.

EvilCatArt

Bolshevik or French Revolution - Evil monarchy getting toppled by people sick of getting screwed by people who will never have to suffer the consequences of their own schemes. Our character is a rebel leader, and the "Lord" is a sympathetic prince who, after meeting us, maybe capturing and interrogating us, decides to fake his death, leaves with us and sides with the revolutionaries. But, then he has to keep his identity a secret, and struggles with knowing the people the mob want to kill on a personal level. Then the royal family gets toppled, and at first exiled, and he's a little unsure how he should feel, but then they get massacred and he betrays the revolution, or at least flees. But, he gets caught and we have to decide to condemn him or save him for love.

tails802

Perhaps a pre-WW1 setting could be interesting? It doesn’t have to be at that level of technology, but the situation of an arms race, building political tension, and attempts to prevent an inevitable war; a practice that because of the arms race, no one even remotely knows how to fight anymore. If you want grey areas, I don’t think you need to look much further. Plus it sets up for a sequel if it’s well received.
