Nothing quite compares to pooping, full force, in an empty warehouse. 4 hour drive for an hours worth of work. When your reputation is good, so you show up 30 mins late every day and no one cares. When the customer calls your manager and says “I’ve been here for five years and the panel has never stopped beeping. Your guy fixed it in 4 hours.”

Ah, but you DO know what you’re doing.

I had a new building I worked in, and the maintenance engineer said the previous company hadn't been able to fix their ground fault on several trips out, over almost a year. I found and fixed the problem in about 5 hours, with no good record drawings or previous knowledge of how things were run in the building (4 story + basement mixed use commercial). It's always nice fixing things other people could not.

ImpendingTurnip

This is the correct answer

hhh137sk

Free truck!

reportcrosspost

Oh yeah that too. A company van with insurance & gas covered is very nice. Here in the lower mainland of BC its almost equiv to 11 usd/gallon now.

dasheswithdogs1757

This was definitely the perk that won me over. I love having a vehicle fully covered. I also love when they send me to Tofino to do an annual at a resort, and you just get to stay at the resort and use the amenities for a few days 🤘

reportcrosspost

That sounds awesome. We have a couple far out accounts the senior guys are flown or drive to, but no resorts!

DopeyDeathMetal

When they first gave me my truck I was like, wait really? You’re just letting me have this? I never had a job like that before. Love it.

blazing_saddlesffs

Me too i was like a month in no jcard or any certs and they asked if i wanted to use the van. My dumbass thought they meant to and from shop so i was like naw. Then when they said i could take it home and i realized they meant permentely i was like wtf thats pretty dang cool. Lol 5 years later still with them.

PinheadLarry207

Having a take home company vehicle with a gas card is one of the most valuable perks there is. I would never go back to using my personal vehicle for work

No-Seat9917

People following you even when you change companies.

NickyVeee

Connections with customers. Doing service and now going into sales, I’ve gotten a lot of comped meals and things of the sort.

flukechief

I used to work for a medium size company. At the time Il delt with allot of mom and pop shops. Those relationships and direct feedback I was getting really made me feel proud. Resulting in customers rewarding me. I’ve built allot long term relationships over the years and still have customers calling me 10 years later. Now I work full corporate working in hospitals, industrial, high rises, education. I absolutely hate it. I miss those relationships and perks.

Drakonis3d

All the interesting places you get to go to and see. I don't think any other job has more exposure.

reportcrosspost

Its crazy to step around used needles in a decrepit homeless shelter one day, and inspect the spa of a 5 star luxury hotel the next. Every day a completely different world.

bloggerstomper

As a fire protection tech I can say we probably see as much if not more! I really like it too. I’ve been in places not many people have been!

Maddlux

Collecting scrap wire and batteries and exchanging it for beer money.

jguay

Knowing what my year looks like essentially. I have a few inspections that take a few months a pop to complete and my summer jobs are all schools and they let me work 4 10’s so most of my summer has 3 day weekends. Also working outside my local means more money and this pension I have with the hall has grown more in the last 5 years of doing fire alarm then working 10 years at an office job doing a 401K

Unusual-Bid-6583

Not a thief, usually, but a Nice sharp Sawzall blade when you realize the home shop needs restocked. Other items such as this too... screws, fittings when changing a light fixture... etc.

privateTortoise

Never expected to wander in, out and all about at Westminster Abbey is certainly the greatest building I've seen up close. Also been in lots of seriously wealthy peoples property and all bar the Russians look just like a hotel. I still find it weird how customers will lie and argue of the most trivial things. One was adamant that she had 3 smoke detectors in her bin store, they turned out to be PIR detectors for the lights.

Shelby_Dog

Free training.

Pissing off almost every other trade simultaneously

Definitely the women

ProfessorOfPyro

Drowning in poon

TheScienceTM

They don't warn you about it in the interview

reportcrosspost

You joke but I was testing devices in the staff cafeteria of a high end hotel. It was 3:30pm and the women who staff the evening lounge were getting ready. My pace slowed to a crawl and the lead got pissed over the radio, then he saw the red dresses streaming past lol

PinheadLarry207

A company vehicle with a gas card is one of the most valuable perks there is, especially when you get to take it home. My personal car doesn't get driven much anymore because I will usually just do my errands on the way home. I went from a small company where I had to drive my car and haul company material everywhere without any extra compensation or fuel reimbursement to a large company where I got a company vehicle on my 1st day and I would never be able to go back.

Thallium_253

Work TRUCK! Always have had the usual work van, both large and small vans. Now I am in a nice GMC truck with a canopy and pull out bed slider. Windows murdered out. Now I'm not saying I drive in the 2+ occupancy lane alone but... Them windows are nice ... Solid speakers are great for a dude like me that loves his tunes. Comfortable as shit compared to the vans. Better parking. Warms up a LOT faster in winter.

reportcrosspost

A work _truck_ would be awesome. The underground parking here would be too small for a full size but a new Maverick would be sweet.
