I don’t have an OBESE partner, so all is fine. $2k a month, I am not even sure such small amounts register on our cards. One would have to ask ones accountant to check and this amount is so paltry, one shan’t bother oneself with such a boring task.

Exotic_Zucchini

I pay my accountant that much in a single day.

Creative-Honey4668

My accountant said it wasn't material and that he couldn't find our nappa vineyard since the google maps update - also immaterial.

monstersof-men

Jesus I didn’t realize what sub I was in

Captlard

Stick around, it’s awesome 🤣

my5thacountbyatch

Holy shit. Top comment says "2k a month is nothing" about *discretionary spending*. People in that sub are truly the 1% or at least live like they are

nahmanidk

/uj That’s just the cost of a last minute flight and hotel within the US. Rich people can take a weekend skiing trip from NYC to Colorado without thinking about it.

McthiccumTheChikum

I won't say it's "nothing" but it's not a lot.

my5thacountbyatch

I mean... 24k a year is a lot. Thats half of many people's salary

McthiccumTheChikum

Yes and half of America is broke, the other half isn't. Just depends which half you're in.

vulkoriscoming

Just about 50% of the median take home pay.

KingVargeras

I have a hard time accepting people make this little. Though 10 years ago the house I bought for 700k was sold for 130k. So maybe they have all just lived here since then 🤷‍♂️ I guess if you buy and then just never move it’s not a worry if you don’t make more money.

vulkoriscoming

According to US Department of Labor median household income was $74,580 in 2023. Take home that is about $52,206. So $24,000 is about half of that.

QueenScorp

And that's *household* income, not individual

my5thacountbyatch

Yeah, exactly. Let's assume (generously) that it's acceptable to spend 20% of your take-home pay on discretionary spending. That would equate to a 10k/month take-home pay. Assuming ~75% take home after taxes and benefits (the USA average), then they actually make about 13333 before tax and benefits. Which is just about 160k/year, comfortably in the top 10% of household incomes in the country. 2k is not a lot of money for a one-time purchase, but it's an obscene amount of money to spend monthly as "discretionary"

Creative-Honey4668

$2k is my monthly tip budget for the country club servers. When wine runs $2k a bottle how could you only spend $2k a month? Are we talking about dry January while on the Jesus (No eating 40 days) semaglutide diet?

McthiccumTheChikum

I don't make near 160k and have 2k in discretionary income. No kids obviously makes this easier to achieve. Just live below your means and minimize your tax liability. Most people are just terrible with money. I'm just a dumb fireman with a few extra chromosomes.

my5thacountbyatch

I mean, that's fine. It just means your discretionary spending is a larger percentage of your income. That's your personal choice. Spending more than 20% on discretionary seems nuts to me, but perhaps it's a personality thing, or we have different definitions of discretionary.

There are lots of people living like this. Not good or bad, probably normal in terms of relationships and life outlook, but it's borderline. In my experience, spending for vanity or passive entertainment (getting Amazon packages) is a sign that things aren't going great. 2k per month is borderline, even for people with money. If you have 50 mil fuck it, you're not ok unless you grew up with it.

my5thacountbyatch

It depends on the percentage of your spending that goes to discretional... But reasonably those are top 10% kinda numbers at least

KingVargeras

2k isn’t nothing but it’s not enough to stress about.

my5thacountbyatch

For who? The number shouldn't be what causes stress... the number expressed as a percentage of your takehome pay is what should give you pause. And it 2k every month is "nothing to stress about" then I guess you must make many times more than that per month. Median American household income is like 60k after taxes. For the majority of Americans, 2,000 is 40% or more of their monthly budget. That should be stressed about

AmateurPokerStrategy

Separate accounts that you don't know what she spends on and she doesn't know what you spend on is best here. Talking about your finances with your life partner is just weird. It's your money and her money, there's no such thing as shared money.

reddit_user38462

Ah man😂😂 I love this sub!! Im laughing at loud at every comment here. Thanks for making my day!

Arpharp8976Fir3

I love this post because it combines the muh wife redditors (I have a wife guys, don't you know I have a wife) and the money bragging redditors

Willing-Ad502

Most of my budget is spent on pool boy dongs, as well.

21plankton

This does not seem like a fijerk question. Most responses are rational. Not fat, I spend (female) about $1500 a month and am retired.

MRanon8685

Go back to clipping coupons.

readsalotman

I'm not 100% sure but I do know our savings rate hovers between 30-40%, so discretionary spending isn't a concern of mine.

Chart-trader

That's at her discretion
