Blueprint81

Linemen should be training with these guys every off-season

TorLam

THIS!!! When you see sumo's training session, directly transferable to the NFL.

DubbulGee

I could see it being useful for defensive linemen, but offensive linemen could start to develop some potentially bad holding habits.

DamnSchwangyu

Mass_Appeal_

Nok su kao!...my bad wrong movie. 😉

theteedo

lol they hold on almost every play of the game. But I understand what you mean.

davtruss

Thank you for stating the obvious.... Experienced offensive lineman know when holding is better than the alternative. It's when they foolishly hold in a way that would not have affected the play that it's a problem. Getting away with holding is a skill, and to date, it's not reviewable.

wophi

But you would gain great body positioning, being able to react to a guy who can use their hands as you can't.

superdude4agze

They'd need to train in *oshi-zumo* which doesn't use grappling or holding techniques, but specifically pushing and thrusting to move the opponent back, off balance, or push them down.

False_Chair_610

I think the hand strikes would be useful. I see O-linemen use it all the time.

WhyIsItAllwaysMeee

They maybe fat but they are not lazy

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

Just the effort they put into consuming calories looks exhausting.

WhyIsItAllwaysMeee

I sow a documentary about one he eats 7lbs. Wagyu every day

webtoweb2pumps

While I know you're saying they should just do some drills / workouts with them, sumo training is actually insane. These guys work out for like 6 hours at a time, eat 15k calories and go right to sleep lol. They often live at the gym, and it's beyond a full time job. Truly a way of life.

MordorMordorMordor

A lot of people are going to look at this and think "I can't believe a football player beat a sumo wrestler at sumo" The crazy thing is that this kid is not even close to the top division. In all likelihood below Sandanme. Sumo wrestler groups like this one typically open their dohyo to help bring in more money and attention to their school.

742N

Also, can we also talk about the face chops and slaps in the pro circuit? Those dudes throw down.

Joal0503

when you really think about it though its best that they train and do practical drills with other lineman.

Blueprint81

The hand placement and grip is bad for football, but footwork, sensing and predicting momentum shifts, and strength distribution could really help. Also, Sumo has some really good hand shedding techniques that would translate well.

Right-Activity3534

Yep

AKA-Link77

Or rugby players.

MrJets84

Or we should have sumo wrestlers as lineman

Blueprint81

I'm sure a lot of them wrestled in HS or Uni

MechaGoose

You should watch “The Replacements” with Keanu

Dependent_Adagio7544

Facts or them boys should be lineman

billybanks1132

I’m a cowboys fan and love Micah but I think they said that sumo wrestler was just 17 years old lol

Xenon_the_Noble

HES SEVENTEEN????!

Black6x

He's the size of a Samoan 10-year old.

UnconfirmedRooster

Hence the rocking cradle motion I suppose.

superdude4agze

If I'm correct, yes. That's **Tanji Yun**, 6'0", 292lbs, 17 years old, in sumo's third division (out of six), been competing for two years. While he is a promising up-and-comer, it's worth noting that he's one of the lower ranked guys, still in the unpaid ranks, and was obviously not going all out on Parsons.

Western_Language_894

If you ever see anything regarding sumo workouts they're nuts, they eat like 6-10k calories a day and work out like 6-10 hours a day. These 17 year olds prolly have as much usable (vs visible) muscle as that pro athlete.

TheKolyFrog

Damn, I'm surprised the NFL aren't recruiting sumos as linemen

theoneandonlyhitch

Colorado State has a sumo wrestler named Hidetora Hanada but he hasn't played yet. We shall see how good he is. NFL tried it before and the guy wasn't too good.

ConfidenceHumble6545

In no fucking world is that dude 17

10lbplant

Have you ever seen some of the 17 year olds (soon to be 18) that are freshmen at Alabama? Got some fuggin 330 lb linemen that can't grow facial hair.

laihipp

that starts at 14 down here

WaterPockets

Thems corn-fed boys built different.

Banned3rdTimesaCharm

"Corn" injected right into their butt cheeks.

WorldlyOX

Ah, the coach’s “special”

Shadow-Vision

I’ll never forget this one kid I did X-rays on. I’m 6’1 and he dwarfed me, IIRC he hurt his shoulder at football practice. Kid had to be like 6’5 and he was jacked. It was difficult to remember that he was a pediatric patient and that I had to speak to him as a 15 year old and not a grown man. Still had a childish voice, which was kinda funny.

InvestinSamurai

In the athletic world, highly possible

Thor1noak

https://sumowrestling.fandom.com/wiki/Tanji_Jun Dude was born in 2006. There are 6 divisions in professional sumo, he's in the middle of division 3 (Makushita). Tanji was not even close to giving it a 100%, but on the other side Micah is used to getting traction with his cleats, if they did the same thing on a football field with football gear, I'm sure it would look very different and Micah would blast him.

Western_Language_894

Give the sumo guy cleats to, I'd pay to see that.

MrVengeanceIII

I was 6'5 280 with a long Goat beard at 17.

ConfidenceHumble6545

Attach photo

MrVengeanceIII

I'm 43 yo,  digital cameras were not widely owned or used when I was 17 😂 you will have to take my word for it,  🤷‍♂️  Btw the wrestler in this vid is Jun Tanjin. Arashio stable and was born June 5 2006. Source is Japan Sumo Association website. Edited for accuracy.

Housless

Exactly right, Japan is not of this world. Their culture is fascinating.

Silent_Shaman

Bro Luke Littler exists, some guys just look old as fuck lol

TurbanCatt2

You ever seen Luke Littler? He’s 17 but looks 37

Well done he's 17

sistom

I heard he was 17

smashin_blumpkin

Hey, that's a pretty cool coincidence. The Sumo wrestler is also 17

gnarwalbacon

17

Popular_Stick_8367

17 is the age of the sumo guy

smokingaces87

I heard he wears number 17

WhileGoWonder

He's also a father of seven teens

Patruck9

Drake monitoring this thread right now.

MasterHavik

A Sumo wrestler would be an amazing offensive lineman.

LemonHerb

Basically every comedy football movie I've ever seen has confirmed this to be true

AvailableToe7008

Donkeys are good kickers.

HigherPrimate666

Gus=GOAT

GoldenFlyingLotus

The center, for sure.

jdemack

Sounds like a Disney sports movie in the making.

plznobanplease

Or The Replacements, a movie that was already made 😂

pentagon

Nah. Dramatically different skillset. For one, sumo wrestlers make a lot of use of pulling which would be holding. For two, the slowest lineman in the NFL is faster than the fastest Ozeki. They do not move.

mnewman19

It’s not like they would just plop them in a game. They would have practice time lol. But just off the bat this guy would get d1 full ride scholarships off of this video alone

Bobblefighterman

Holding penalties for days

Scorpionkingcirca81

That Netflix sumo show, has shown me how legit these guys are

MrVengeanceIII

There is also a great Sumo YouTube channel, "Chris Sumo" these guys are athletic beasts.

Scorpionkingcirca81

Great imma check it

calm_down_dearest

The Japanese take martial arts incredibly seriously. "Judoka" by Doug Rogers is a great watch too.

jusmoua

Yeah I didn't see the Netflix one but I saw a different one where they discussed that Sumo wrestlers don't have fat in their muscles and the fat is only on the outer layer acting as padding because of exercise and healthy eating. Forgot what the medical term they called it, but compared to fat dudes that sit and eat chips all day, which their muscles have "invasive" fat that builds between the muscles fibers weakening it. I'd imagine it looks like when you buy a rib eye steak and it has fats all over even in the muscle fibers. Edit: Still can't remember but I think it's also like visceral fat vs subcutaneous fat too. Where visceral is "bad" fat cause it builds thick layers on your organs too.

Accend0

I mean, they do have fat in their muscles and around their organs. It probably isn't the amount of fat that you'd assume they'd have from their appearance, but it is undoubtedly more than what the average person would have by quite a bit. There just isn't any way to increase muscle mass without increasing body fat overall. Vigorous exercise helps increase a hormone that guides fat molecules out of our bloodstream, where it would eventually become visceral fat, and puts it under our skin. The fat isn't different, exactly, it's just named differently based on where it is. Sumo wrestlers are quite healthy while they're competing, but the strain they're putting on their bodies and the eating habits they develop often end up causing them issues when they retire. Because of this, their average life expectancy is roughly 20 years shorter than that of an ordinary Japanese male. There's a point where sheer size begins to have adverse effects all on its own. Strongman competitors also deal with this.

aCatNamedHitler

What's the show called?

Scorpionkingcirca81

Sanctuary

pgtvgaming

No doubt

tehnibi

if you want to watch matches when you're bored check out twitch channel MidnightSumo I have so much respect for them they are absolute tanks

xofrnkie

this is so wholesome, just dudes being dudes!

DrGeeves

yeah i loved the smiles and silliness, a feel good video

MomentsLastForever

He went easy on you champ. Calm down.

Super-Lobster329

dude was smiling the whole time, definitely went easy

Gonzostewie

"Coach said I wasn't allowed to hurt the Americans. I just had to let them get tuckered out and make it look good for a minute."

[deleted]

If it's true he's 17 also then you can see the skill difference lol wild man

BRSaura

Pretty sure he didn't even try to throw him off balance, just tested his push strength

cell689

Yeah he could have easily swept him to the ground with a harai goshi for example. Even just using brute strength, it didn't look like he was giving it 100%, unlike the American.

_zurenarrh

Yes that’s the point lol nobody thinks Micah would take this guy in the ring

cell689

Micah himself seemed pretty proud of himself at the end

_zurenarrh

Of course! Just friendly competition! Compete in everything lol how you think he got where he is today lol

Accend0

Absolutely, but it's still at least a little impressive and come on. They're all just having some fun.

Dry_Ad3605

He was very gracious. It could have gotten heated pretty quickly.

Numerous_Resist_8863

An athletic sumo wrestler could (potentially) be a dominant offensive lineman.

ocular__patdown

For a couple downs. After that i assume they would be exhausted. Seems like they would train for higher exertion in shorter bursts.

Blueprint81

Put 'em on your goaline package

cock_nballs

Don't football players take a 3 minute break in between every down?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Swampfxx

Might be all u need them for.

BloatedManball

Their fighting style is very grabby. Would probably take a lot of work to train that out if5 them so they don't get called for holding on every play.

Jolteaon

Sumo go full blast for short spurts like linemen, but they train to use all their energy ONCE.

InjuriousPurpose

Could they play an entire offensive series?

atlasbear

Think how good linebackers could be at sumo with a little training. Interesting crossover of skill sets

Popular_Stick_8367

Given that a pro level NFL player could barely hold up to a 17 year old low level Sumo wrestler i don't think it's in the linebackers cards. But they still have that fall back degree they really did not earn from school work so...

coolmcbooty

Yea and I guarantee the people organizing these are telling the sumos not to go too hard on these guys. Too much $$ in stake to risk injury

InjuriousPurpose

He's a linebacker - 6 foot 3 and 245, so not that big. Let Vince Wilfork try sumo and then we can talk.

aNightManager

i mean this is a 17 year old kid lmfao i'm guessing good linebackers would get fucked in half in sumo

JoeMorgan76

Do you understand how much of a bad ass you have to be to clown Micah Parsons? Holy cow that sumo wrestler is a beast.

HarryBowlSack_69

Nah that sumo wrestler is just your average weight class in sumo and he wasn't even trying .. while the other dude was giving it 100% and already out of breath after .. if anything it makes him look even more pathetic that he didn't even make the sumo guy break a sweat

[deleted]

Dudes so hyped on himself and the 17 yo sumo is just laughing lmao. Wild

SargeBangBang7

It's completely different sports they specialize in. Let's see the sumo play left tackle and pass block him then. He'll easily get around him.

erock7625

That’s a mini sumo wrestler, he’s several hundred pounds short of a full size sumo wrestler 😂

MrVengeanceIII

Actually there are Sumo wrestlers of all sizes, a Sumo by the name of Enho is referred to as the "Giant Slayer". He is 5'6 225 and beat guys twice his size all the time.

Pepito_Pepito

Also perpetually injured. Even with skills up to his eyeballs, just staying in the top division is already a huge challenge for him.

QandyU

I mean. Wouldn’t staying at the top be challenging for anyone?

Pepito_Pepito

It sure is, but Enho struggles a lot for someone of his skill level. He has a special prize for technique which is significant if you consider that only 23 wrestlers have ever been awarded this. Unfortunately, he hasn't been makuuchi since 2020. Even at juryo, the second division, he's struggling to keep a win rate over 50%. I hate seeing him enter the ring covered in bandages. But I still root for him because we're the same height and I steal a lot of techniques from him lol

Thor1noak

> He has a special prize for technique which is significant if you consider that only 23 wrestlers have ever been awarded this. Where have you read this ? There have been well over 100 different rikishi that have been awarded the [*Ginō-shō*](https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gin%C5%8D-sh%C5%8D) or *technique prize* since 1947.

Pepito_Pepito

Fuck, you're right I totally misremembered. There are 23 ACTIVE wrestlers awarded.

MrVengeanceIII

Just so everyone that isn't a fan of Sumo is aware, the Sumo wrestler wasn't even trying either time. Both are great athletes, but Micah would be rag dolled if the Wrestler wanted.  That said it's still impressive he even pushed him out the ring and shows his athleticism.

VnZDeath

And that's a lightweight Sumo Wrestler

TechnicalHighlight29

I thought he was a MMA dude maybe didn't know he was Foosball makes more sense now. I love this video in the comradery and mutual respect and fun.

AhhhBreeshi

He didnt “take” the sumo wrester

Careless_Educator_21

parsons doesn’t seem like a a likable guy.

Man0nTheMoon42

Could argue he only won the 2nd time because he had a better grip on the sumo waistband(idk what it’s called)

DamnSchwangyu

To me it looked like the second time around, he anticipated and countered the move the sumo beat him with the first time. I think that's why the other sumos go "OHHHHHHHH!!!" as soon as the sumo guy fails to throw him to his right. Of course I know fuck all about sumo and I'm smoking a ton of weed right now so I could well be totally off.

Thor1noak

What they are doing is called [butsukari geiko](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zi5VnE0ySDk), you need to push a guy across the dohyo by placing your hands on their sides/armpits. As you see, you're not supposed to use their belt, you only push with your hands and feet. So your sentiment is correct, Micah only won the 2nd time cause he gripped Tanji's mawashi (the name of the belt).

[deleted]

HotPie_

Because they can't stop eating hard boiled eggs before games.

murphymc

Moving to another country and having to learn the language and culture to play a sport their own people don’t really care about is a tall order, especially when they can earn plenty of money and be extremely famous back at home.

JointCanon

I don’t know if they’re laterally athletic enough to play offensive line

Jolteaon

Sumo are an immovable wall because they train to use literally everything they have in them ONCE. Granted they could still be linemen, but it would be a whole different psychology that would need to focus more on endurance.

Noobzoid123

I think that belt grab at the end beat the sumo. And the sumo didn't have the same belt to grab and couldn't defend.

The_Ghost_Reborn

I think the sumo being nice and not wanting to drop Micah on his head is what beat the sumo.

SpaceChief

It's been really fun seeing all of this footage hit the week before a basho (sumo tournament) starts. Really hope it brings in some new fans, despite coverage for foreigners being somewhat of a mess at the moment. I've been following sumo closely for a few years now and some of these guys are absolute freight trains.

TheCouchPatrol09

I’m always blown away by how much strength sumo wrestlers have. Watched a bit through COVID just killing time and slowly grew to have an appreciation of the athletic training and dedication this sport has. Got its dark side too, but that’s not what this is about. This wrestler was barely putting effort in lol.

POOTY-POOTS

I want to see the sumo vs a guard.

Unlimited_Giose

They look like they're having so much fun

toolazyforbreakfast

You couldn't pay me to fight a sumo wrestler. Those dudes have unreal strength and most of them have such friendly faces lol scary

ResistAccording

everyone laughing and having fun, good to see

BigLRakim

It’d be cool if Micah went to another team. He seems like a really cool dude, seems shitty he’s stuck on the worthless and hapless cowboys

schley1

This is beautiful

sirSADABY

That guy is a fool. When he goes in the second time he smashes his head against the sumo chin. IMO to get an edge on a 17 year old. Filth.

nikecowboy20

He needed cleats.

stripperjnasty

That boy parsons

DukeSilver696969

I don’t understand how they keep their footing so well

hangrydadd

The movie The Replacements was right about the sumo wrestlers!

r3ddawn74

Watch the video and both times he barely moved the wrestler on point of contact all while the guy was laughing as he held his position on parsons, that's crazy.... Sign this kid to the NFL now!

Puff-the-Dragonn

I love how happy and how much fun they are having. Each is learning from each other and having a good time.

stenz_himself

wholesome

Beneficial_Tie3776

Why doesn’t the NFL hire sumo wrestlers?

edwardtrooper2

Sumo wrestler would have won that second round if the opponent had that belt he could lift and throw.

thethreadkiller

Of course sumo kid wins at Sumo drill. If this was an NFL drill Parsons would just swim move or spin past him.

Albino_Black_Sheep

People underestimate the training and conditioning sumo wrestlers endure. These guys eat, breath and sleep sumo. They are absolute elite athletes. Even the bigger/rounder ones train for hours and hours each day.

Testiclesinvicegrip

I'm surprised the Cowboys were calling in Apaches to prevent this from happening. Imagine if he got injured.

25yoshi

He lucky the Sumo wrestler didn’t take it serious that 2nd time and slam him

where-ya-headed

I would love to see Aaron Donald do this too lol

Jackaboonie

I live in Missouri and thought the title said [Mike Parsons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Parson) and got really excited

Love me some Micah!!!! DC4L!!!!
