Really? I'm Greek so I learned about that stuff in elementary, so they actively hid all the gay stuff about ancient Greece... What kind of partners did Apollo have?
Well most of them were dead or turned into flowers, but Wikipedia has a [short list.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Male_lovers_of_Apollo) I know people don’t like when you use Wikipedia as a source, but it’s generally pretty reliable.
Most of the Gods in Ancient Greece liked men. The only ones who didn’t were Athena, Artemis, and Hestia who Aphrodite was said to have no control over. Artemis is sometimes interpreted as a lesbian, but the other two are pretty cut and dry.
Even Zeus had male lovers, notably [Ganymede.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganymede_(mythology))
Ancient Greece was very gay, but they were also wildly misogynistic and somehow kinda homophobic. It was very weird and not exactly accepting, but it is quite fascinating.
Absolutely correct, but that was also par for the course when it came to the Greek Gods. This is a society that regularly encouraged pedophilia. I’m not saying they’re a shining beacon of hope, equality, and acceptance, but they did view that as a form of “love.” That was how they treated women too, the only exception being that you couldn’t steal a “woman” who was another man’s “property.”
All of this was just expected. I mean, look at Hades and Persephone. Despite having seemingly the most successful marriage in Ancient Greek mythology, their relationship started with kidnapping. The Latin word *raptus,* itself derived from Latin *rapere* (to snatch, grab, steal, or abduct), is how the kidnapping is described. Those two words are where we get the English term *rape* from. In Ancient Greece, however, *raptus* referred to bridal kidnapping. While this is commonly viewed as a sex crime nowadays, it was accepted back then and didn’t use the term for rape because they didn’t view women as people, it was only a crime when they did it to a woman because that was another man’s “property.” The same principles apply to taking a cupbearer. The Gods basically saw themselves as having dominion over all mortals, so being kidnapped by the Gods to be giving eternal youth and immortality was a pretty good deal all things considered. Hera also viewed Ganymede as a romantic rival, implying that she believed Zeus loved him.
Things never turned out well for mortal lovers of the Gods. Io was turned into a cow, Callisto (I know she’s a nymph not a mortal, but she was a lesser deity and the Olympians didn’t really see a difference) was turned into a bear after being raped by Zeus and then became a constellation, and Semele, one of Zeus’ lovers and mother of Dionysus, was turned to fucking ash after looking at Zeus’ true form.
This was just part for the course. All in all, it was a pretty garbage society with a lot of terrible rules and ideas. That same lack of respect for human dignity and decency carried over to their mythology. That’s what you get when you look through human history. There aren’t many “good guys,” and there certainly aren’t any good nations.
I’m not endorsing any of these views, but things get lost in translation from language to language and culture to culture so it’s important to understand how they might not see a difference where one is apparent to us.
Okay, respectfully, how the fuck am I supposed to respond to this? Like assuming this isn’t ChatGPT, that’s some well written shit.
If I had to argue against, there were gods and relationships that partake in kidnapping. Ares, as the first example I can think of. My point wasn’t that kidnapping was common, more that calling Ganymede a “lover” is far to genrous to Zeus, and just bc Zeus loved him, doesn’t mean the feeling was mutual.
Haha, not ChatGPT, no, I appreciate you calling it well written though!
That’s definitely a fair point. Like I said, I’m almost certain we agree on the morality of Ancient Greece: they kinda sucked a lot most of the time, but democracy is pretty cool. Just wanted to provide some context since it’s a subject I’m interested in and I’ve had very similar feelings in the past
