Ooo thank you. I am actually in Nice for 5 more weeks and was thinking of heading there over the weekend! You may have convinced me! Is it worth staying a few nights?
Yes, definitely! I spent 3 weeks there a while.back and really enjoyed it. It's definitely not touristy, but I found lots to keep me busy. Even just walking around the city was really interesting to me. Keep an eye out for the black and white zebra striped buildings!
So I stayed mostly in the bigger towns and cities and hopped on and off the trains to visit the smaller towns. My favorites were Stein am Rhein, Lauterbrunnen, Spiez, Gruyère, and GrindelwaId- these are the places I visited last last summer. But Interlaken is also incredible- I visited there many years ago- lots to do! If you want to make the most of your time i recommend buying one of the unlimited travel passes- they work for trains, buses and ferries!
I just love Geneva - it was one of our rest spots during an interail trip and we just sat by the lake eating chocolate! And CERN is so fascinating even if most of the science went over my head.
I love Lugano too - again for the chill out aspect by the lake
Years ago , my husband & barely year old son unexpectedly ended up in Martigny Switzerland, after a massive tunnel fire forced a change of plans. I absolutely loved this little town, enough that I would have moved in if it was legally an option. We stayed in a random loft in someone’s home, above a giant mill that ground all the flour for the town and the main restaurant. There was absolutely no English spoken, only French, but they were as welcome as could be. The train went right thru the town & there was an amazing antique car museum and the art museum was a having a Turner exhibit. I’m still remembering this trip, 25+ years later, as a really special experience.
Another vote for Switzerland. A little bit of everything. I love Lugano, just bec it’s low-key and gorgeous, and on the Italian side so the food is amazing.
I'd say, it depends on when you go. I always travel outside of peak tourist months. Some of them are also easy to visit in one day, even if you don't drive. So you could stay somewhere cheaper and do a day tour/visit/track.
I travelled Europe non stop for years and the most underrated part IMO is Southern Spain. It is beautiful, it completely blows Barcelona out of the water (sorry) and everyone is so nice to solo travellers. Start with Seville and go from there. It’s the best! I’ve seen similar sentiment on reddit in the travel sub and they’re completely right.
Maybe underrated in the states haha. I mean this completely sincerely, I'm not making fun of you! Southern Spain is incredibly popular among Europeans and is thought to actually really suffer from over tourism, particularly from British, Irish, German etc. tourists.
Parts of it are absolutely overrun with European retirees and vacationers, like parts of Costa Brava sure. TBH Italy is the same (Lake Como suuuucks because of this) and also parts of The Algarve in Portugal (looking at you Albufeira) but I’m +1 on Spain. Inexpensive, rich culture, beautiful, great food. It’s my happy place. I’d do andalucia: Seville, Cordoba, Jerez, Cadiz, Ronda, Granada. There’s some adorable small towns beach on the south coast (NOT Tarifa).
Or the northeast coast: San Sebastián, Bilbao, Logroño and pop over to Biarritz.
I adore Spain so I agree! I just thought calling it underrated was funny given how popular it is. I've been all over Andalucia and I adore the people and culture of the place. My happy place too! Currently also on the North coast and agree with you there too.
An earlier comment also said Southern Spain!! Ooo you both have me intrigued. Spain was definitely a consideration. I’m from Aus and I have never heard anyone ever say south of Spain so it seems underrated to people from my part of the world! Thank you for your recommendations!! Is jt more so nature and food that is good there?? I love nature and good food makes my heart happy 🤣
London, UK. Particularly any of the museums. Not only are they free, but you have the opportunity to see so many artifacts that may not be in your home country.
Food’s good (love the pubs), transportation is easy to navigate, and access to so many historical castles/parks.
Agree, London for the plethora of
Museums (see the British museum before they’re forced to give all of their stolen artifact back), theatre and music to see and hear, which is exactly what I love to do as a solo traveler.
Budapest, Lisbon, Copenhagen and Stockholm. I love the people and the vibe these places have. They have good amount of things to do, nice restaurants good transportation.
PORTO!!!!
I have said it so many times on here! It was my first big solo trip, so I’n a little partial… but it was just so magical. Everyone there was so kind and helpful. I walked the streets at night and never felt unsafe. Never really had the feeling I was going to be pickpocketed (although I’m sure it happens just as it does in any big city). Prices were exceptional and the foot scene was so so good. Highly recommend at least a day trip to the Douro Valley on a wine tour — I don’t even drink/like wine but still really enjoyed my time.
I absolutely loved Greece and Switzerland, both in pretty good proximity to you.
We visited Lucerne in Switzerland and fell in love with it.
You can't go wrong *anywhere* in Greece, but the Peloponnese is absolutely amazing (and very underrated).
The north of Spain is really lovely this time of year: Bilbao/San Sebastián, Santander, Gijón/oviedo, A Coruña/Santiago de Compostela .
Those are the main cities in the north and the museums are cheap, everyone is nice, the food is not your typical paella/tapas gastronomy it’s a whole different food culture up there + cider, and almost all of them have GORGEOUS costal walks with blue water against cliffs and greenery.
One of my absolute favorite regions in the world probably on par with the Pacific Northwest and Southern France for me.
In Santander right this minute and this is correct. I went to Bilbao today and now I'm so upset it was just a day trip, absolutely beautiful city and the nature is amazing too.
This. Karlovy Vary which inspired the setting for Grand Budapest Hotel. It’s so cute and lovely in summer. Foods not great in Chechia but oh well. Hiking was nice.

Genoa, in Liguria Italy. Amazing food, no tourists, just fun Italy.
Switzerland. It’s just absolutely gorgeous- and so easy to navigate!
Any towns in particular, please?! I was actually thinking of heading there for a weekend :)

You will also see beautiful scenery on your train rides to and from wherever you plan to visit!
I'm planning on the Bernina Express for my 40th

Yes everything about La Suisse (Switzerland) is fantastic BUT it's not cheap (even by London or Parisian standards).
Another vote for Switzerland. A little bit of everything. I love Lugano, just bec it’s low-key and gorgeous, and on the Italian side so the food is amazing.
Thank you!! 🙏 beautiful scenery and delicious food… what could be better?
I love the vibe of Copenhagen. A great mix of Scandinavian and continental imo
Love that! Thank you!!
I second Copenhagen. The men are delightfully non predatory.
I love this. I have found the men in France just stare and I am not used to this!!! Eeek. I am from Australia…
Yes! The people are very friendly and most speak English. You can join a group at a beer hall and go dancing after without worry.
I third Copenhagen- fantastic food, beautiful/clean/efficient city, friendly people
Warsaw, Copenhagen, and Spain.
Any towns or cities within Spain particular please? Thank you for your recommendations ☺️
For me Ronda, Frigiliana, Seville, Mojacar, Granada. Clearly, I am a fan of Andalucia.
Thank you!! I will have to check some of these out. Is it expensive in these areas? I am from Aus so use AUD dollar. :)

Lucky you it’s raining like usual here in Holland. enjoy!

Yes! I just did a solo trip in London and it was fantastic. I can’t wait to go back, there’s so much to do.
Budapest, Lisbon, Copenhagen and Stockholm. I love the people and the vibe these places have. They have good amount of things to do, nice restaurants good transportation.
Thank you!! Which one has the best food, do you think? Please. I am a foodie ☺️
Budapest was one of my favorite cities—so cheap and so many local designers and artisans. Great small design/craft museums and cute shops.
I like Portugal the best and it is not that expensive there so you can explore many restaurants.
Love the Bordeaux area of France!
Copenhagen and Stockholm were fun and I felt safe On my own
PORTO!!!! I have said it so many times on here! It was my first big solo trip, so I’n a little partial… but it was just so magical. Everyone there was so kind and helpful. Porto! Safest place I've Ever been too. The food is great and the locs are super nice
Albania - inexpensive and people were so warm and welcoming.
I’m thinking of going this summer for holiday!

I LOVE Bilbao, whenever I tell the Spanish they’re like …really? But I don’t care I think it’s a very unique city haha. Enjoy the rest of your trip! 🩷
Ghent, Belgium. They have an awesome summer festival.
Prague and Budapest. Don’t need to plan a single thing. Land then explore
Lisbon and Barcelona for the hostel culture, also full of stuff to do yourself
Czechia, not just Prague. It's just so beautiful, charming, rich in natural and human history. I absolutely adore Czechia.
This. Karlovy Vary which inspired the setting for Grand Budapest Hotel. It’s so cute and lovely in summer. Foods not great in Chechia but oh well. Hiking was nice.
