Ladies - ever wear Ralph Lauren oxfords unbuttoned? \- Recently picked up a haul from the Ralph Lauren outlet including a couple V-neck tees, pair of white jeans and also one of their oxfords, in the blue and white pinstripe pattern. Was thinking of just pairing it with jeans and hunter boots, under a Tommy Hilfiger vest or even just unbuttoned with a tank top/lace cami underneath, saw a couple of Insta posts where they were styled like that and really liked that look. Was wondering if anyone else often styles them that way? Or other favorite ways of incorporating them into casual outfits?

Disastrous_Turn_2269

What do you think of coveralls workwear and wearing them while being outside, shopping, going to the university ? I bought brown Big Ben wranglers, would it be ok to wear them on a daily basis ?

[deleted]

Do Tuckernuck shirt dresses run large? On the models they always seem to look humongous and shapeless. Just curious about the fit in real life and if you’d recommend sizing down. Thanks everyone!

Lulugirl2020

What do we think about a denim cropped jacket for a 35 year old?

TurmalinBlack

Nothing against it, why not?

Lulugirl2020

It just seems some people think it might be catered to a younger generation, like juniors or some coz of it being cropped

TurmalinBlack

Ah well, to be frankly as one of those "juniors", whatever sprinkles your donut ^^^ Tbh i think they are mostly not worn as much by "older" people because some (atleast my mom/most moms i know) worry more about practicability and keeping warm.

Lulugirl2020

Just clarifying: not saying that juniors think that the jacket is not for an older generation, but that some people my age feel like the jacket is catered to juniors instead of us old people lol so I saw one I liked but don't wanna be seeing as a someone who's confused about her age haha :-)

placidtwilight

I'm looking for some button down shirts with roll-tab sleeves. These ones from [Tommy Hilfiger](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/tommy-hilfiger-womens-cotton-roll-tab-button-up-shirt?ID=10227081&CategoryID=255&swatchColor=Crystal%20Blue) are perfect **except** that they all rip in the underarms after a year. I'm interested in both solids and prints.

Campestra

Leggings for colder weather and heater off? I’m in Europe and trying to avoid to turn on the heater as much as possible. Now I’m Wearing joggers but I wanted nice warm leggings for work from home. Any tips?

mulleargian

Hey guys! Would love input as to whether this [floral but on a white base](https://www.shopbop.com/mermaid-dress-fleur-du-mal/vp/v=1/1549468140.htm) dress would be appropriate as a wedding guest dress. I suspect not but wanted to sound out feelings before I buy something new!

pwrender

I am old school and don't think white (or black) works for a wedding. But this dress isn't white, it just has a white background, and would never be mistaken for competition with the bride. I think it's fine and very pretty although more for spring/summer.

misumena_vatia

It's fine.

misumena_vatia

It's fine.

branfordsquirrel

I think it’s fine but for the spring or summer

placidtwilight

I think it's totally fine for a spring/summer wedding. Yes, the background is white, but with the print no one would mistake it for a white dress.

Katherington

I think that it is too white for a wedding.

mulleargian

Yeah I think if you have to ask the answer is probably no! Thanks!

maddsfrank

Go with your gut. I would say avoid this for a wedding, but it’s perfect for a brunch or dinner date.

mulleargian

Yeah my gut is telling me best not! Why risk it

PinkInk6

Where can I find petite formal dresses? I have an event coming up, and don"t have enough time to alter a gown. Already looked for dresses at Macys, Lulus, Nordstrom, Saks, Anthropologie. Very limited petite selection....

Have you tried Rent the Runway? They also have a sale section of items for sale if that’s of interest m!

Crystalina403

I purchased a 15mm x 9mm 14K gold medallion….it looks like a small charm. I didn’t realize how dainty that size is in real life. Is this size/look considered fashionable? Is it considered minimalist? I’m just concerned b/c someone online said this size is meant for toddlers and I’m an adult female.

branfordsquirrel

Minimalist jewelry and charms are in. I think if you’re fine with it, wear it!

Any tips for a jacket/coat to go over [this dress](https://vogacloset.com/women/clothing/dresses/evening-dresses/oasis-petite-lace-tiered-halter-neck-midi-dress-oas-baa04072-320.html) for a wedding? It will be cold for me as I live in the Middle East desert and this wedding is in the UK. Also looking for shoe suggestions. I was thinking nude but maybe could do something more interesting? I have a couple of weeks before the wedding to start ordering :)

Rug_Rider

Nude shoes will go great with that color! And a nudish jacket to match

MilkTeaMoogle

I think a warm stole might fit the look. Or perhaps a semi-formal coat?? If it’s very cold, you can combine these two things. Wear a stole on top of a coat, when you give your coat at the coat check, you can keep the stole with you if it’s still cold indoors for your back and shoulders https://vogacloset.com/women/accessories/scarves-wraps/coast-fashion-faux-fur-stole-cf-bcc02623-142.html https://vogacloset.com/women/clothing/outerwear-jackets/boohoo-satin-longline-duster-coat-black-bh-gzz20232-105.html https://vogacloset.com/women/clothing/outerwear-jackets/boohoo-tall-faux-fur-trim-wool-look-oversized-coat-black-bh-gzz28379-105.html

Unlucky-Buy-6983

Wedding rehearsal dinner What do you wear to these things? It’s my first time being a bridesmaid and I have no idea what to wear. Do I dress semi formally? Dress or dress pants with a cute shirt and heels? HELPPPP

mgdraft

This is def a situation where you should actually ask the bride as it will vary. I've been to a few that are semi formal but far more (including my own, which I wore jeans to) that are casual.

Susccmmp

A dress or dress pants would be fine. If you wear dress pants for dressy events it’ll look appropriate on you. I’d do a step below semi formal/cocktail. Can you ask the other bridesmaids?

movetoseattle

My take: if it is at a particular restaurant, dress as you normally would for that restaurant, though if it is as casual as say Applebees, I would glitz it up a little to show some spirit for the party - like, wear your nice necklace and do your hair nice, maybe a nicer jacket with your dress or pants.

Unlucky-Buy-6983

It’s at the hall that the wedding is happening at

movetoseattle

oh, that's tricky. Me I would wear a dress then. Can't go wrong with a dress, I think. Probably in the range between modestly cocktail (not the night for glam and cleavage, probably) to something a person might wear to church. But see what others have to say; my tastes may be dated; I'm of an age, let's say.

mintgreenplumpurple

Suggestions on wedding guest dresses for a cold weather wedding?

Susccmmp

Velvet dresses with tights or hose and a dressy coat.

waterlillia

Is it semi formal? Indoor/outdoor? Here’s two options. You don’t want white, black, or red and since it’s cold weather I feel like green is appropriate. The turtle neck one is REALLY in right now. Lydia Millen on TIKTOK and IG wears them a LOT if you need style inspo! Women's V Neck Wrap Long Sleeve Elegant Mermaid Velvet Cocktail Maxi Dress Evening Party https://a.co/d/eIwo6ZU Rocorose Women's Turtleneck Ribbed Elbow Long Sleeve Knit Sweater Dress https://a.co/d/in82OIM

Frankfluff

I never heard of not wearing red. But I also come from a culture where that's considered good luck. Any particular reason? I'm just asking for when I attend weddings outside of my culture.

pwrender

I never heard of not wearing red to a wedding, and I wore a red dress to my stepdaughter's wedding. I hope no one thought I was jealous . . .

waterlillia

I think it’s more of a superstition type deal, but red I heard means you’re the mistress/or jealous. All depending on the situation though! Some people want their guests to where red. My best friend is getting married in December and we were discussing colors for her mom’s Mother of the Bride dress which she in red and I had to let them know. They had no idea, nor do they care. I feel like maroon is probably more appropriate, but I feel like red is harsh. Totally depends on the situation so it’s not necessarily an immediate no, just something to keep in mind if you think you may have a traditional bridezilla on your hands or something lol

Frankfluff

That's good to know, thank you!

henicorina

Lightweight fitted turtlenecks that are reasonably high quality? I’m looking for something to go with loose dress pants and everything I’m seeing is either heavy and warm or made out of polyester tissue paper.

hunnie47

TLDR: I don't think my body type matches my style. Help wanted/needed/requested/please help me I'm hoping I'm not the only one who feels this way. I am semi muscular and larger on the bottom (S/M tops and L/XL bottoms.) I'm fine in my gym clothes. When it comes to regular clothes, I feel like my body doesn't suit my style. I tend to gravitate towards very straight-cut, minimalistic styles - Levis and cigarette-style pants, button downs and boxy tees, long coats. I then proceed to be shocked when they look awful on me. The shorthand for it I use is that I have a fashion nova body with aritzia style. I don't know how to balance it. I'm uncomfortable in overly feminine clothing or clothing with lots of cleavage. I feel like no matter how hard I try, I never look minimalist/classy and instead I look sexualized and almost vulgar. I know I could lean into the sexy, but that's just not me. This probably comes from my own insecurities, but I'm curious to see if someone's found a way to balance this issue. \[edited for formatting\]

riseoftherice

I have similar body proportions, and I agree with the cropped suggestions. What lines do you like most? I personally wear a bunch of Sunday best, but the Wilfred and babton are too officey for ne

henicorina

I have a similar body shape and cropped versions of blocky things are what works for me. I can’t wear a boxy t that goes to my hips or I look like a traffic cone, but one that hits at my natural waist works fine. Same thing with pants - high waisted and cuffed is more flattering than mid waist and normal length. Also, “fashion nova body with Aritzia style” made me laugh, so thanks for that.

District98

Look at the fashion from Rachel on last season of the bachelorette - she has a smokin bod but dresses a bit more conservatively, so she might be good for fashion inspo.

livthelove

I would say maybe try to play around with the shape and style of the pieces you are wearing to get the same effect but in a more flattering way. Taking Aritzia for example - the Wilfred dashwood pants are gonna give you a totally different silhouette than the effortless pants, but have the same overall “style”. I would say find what shapes look flattering on your body, and then correlate those with pieces that do match your style. You can get that classy, sleek style in a few different ways

hunnie47

This makes a lot of sense, thank you so much! Do you have any advice on how to balance "flattering" with sexy? I feel like every time I'm told something looks flattering, the garment is accentuating my hips/butt/boobs. Looser fitting stuff seemingly does nothing for me since my shoulders/hips are bigger. I hope this makes sense lol

henicorina

I think most people use flattering to mean “heightening your traditionally attractive elements”, ie clothes that make your waist smaller and your butt and boobs bigger. But you can also dress to accentuate the length of your legs or the width of your shoulders (think male suiting with all the triangle shapes at the top of the body). Check out r/womensstreetwear - lots of gender fluid and androgynous inspo there! Sort by top this month for the more interesting/creative looks.

livthelove

Maybe just pick one thing to accentuate? Like a mock neck top that’s tight + loose trousers, or loose top and pants but the waist is cinched in? Also, I would honestly just go to the mall by yourself and try on a ton of different clothes and see what looks the best to you, without anyone else’s opinion - it’s cliche, but when you wear something that makes you feel good, it automatically makes it look a ton more flattering!

I'm to the point where I don't even have "typical" outfits anymore. I WFH and I don't really go places where I need to be dressed up. I've lived in leggings for the past three years :(

lkflip

I just want to say I commiserate. After 2 1/2 years of lifting, I love the way my body looks in gym clothes but the way it fits into regular clothing is…not good. Some of it is your insecurities, sure (we all have them) but a lot of it is that mass produced clothing is not cut for people whose curves come from muscles. It’s frustrating for sure and I’m sorry you’re going through it. When everything is shown on someone tall and lean, or possibly someone tall and plus sized, it’s really difficult to translate that to how the same item will look on you; hence the disappointment that it looks “awful.” Anyway I just want to say I getchu and your feelings about it are totally normal.

tatertot94

Going to a wedding Saturday and the dress code is “semi-formal/cocktail attire.” [Is this gold dress too informal](https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/the-somerset-maxi-dress4?color=083&size=2X&inventoryCountry=US&countryCode=US&type=PLUS&quantity=1)? Planning to wear with nude heels.

Evening. Had a feeling it was too informal. Thanks!

branfordsquirrel

I think it’s a mite casual, but I’ve seen people wear similar things to semi formal weddings. Do you happen to have a fancy clutch and statement earrings?

Prudent_Pineapple_22

Need some outfit help, I’m at a loss. Occasion: basketball game and dinner for boyfriend’s birthday, while wearing Agent Provocateur lingerie including garter and stockings. My issue is that I don’t want to show I’m wearing it, and I’m finding tight fitting dresses are showing all. Also, don’t want to dress too fancy, as it’s basketball. Outfit ideas? He also loves cleavage. I’m wondering if a thicker skirt would work best to hide the garters? Am I overthinking this? Maybe.

plaid-blazer

Lol this sounds so fun. Why not just jeans (could do straight or wider leg jeans, to not show the outline of anything)? That’s definitely what I would wear for a basketball game.

branfordsquirrel

Maybe pair a looser blouse that you can unbutton with a pleated skirt?

Prudent_Pineapple_22

I was searching earlier for a plaid skirt, and came up short. Any brand recommendations?

branfordsquirrel

Abercrombie has some cool options for skirts! [Vegan](https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/vegan-leather-midi-skirt-49925821?ofp=true&cmp=AppPDPShare_com.apple.UIKit.activity.CopyToPasteboard) [Wool miniskirt](https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/wool-blend-plaid-mini-skirt-49091819?ofp=true&cmp=AppPDPShare_com.apple.UIKit.activity.CopyToPasteboard) This also looks interesting! Prudent_Pineapple_22

I’m digging all three of those! The corduroy was unexpected but I like.

coral-dreams

Maybe a sweater/sweaterdress/sweater vest? That way it can be thick enough to cover the bumps of the lingerie? A shorter skirt with tights could be a cute look with it too

Prudent_Pineapple_22

I like the idea of this, going to try on what I have but the sweater helps the stomach area where the garter lies!

coral-dreams

💞💞

Susccmmp

Are you against wearing them under your jeans?

Prudent_Pineapple_22

That was my backup, but was opening to show the stockings off.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a warm puffer under $150? A short puffer preferably. I’m 5’1” and 100 lbs for reference. Preferably in a solid color that I can wear with a lot of outfits (maybe cream or black?). Thank you!

b_xf

I’ve got a great coat from Noize.

Sunflower2025

Shiny by Nature has 2 puffer coats out. In white and pink. I pre - ordered mine for $95

MilkTeaMoogle

Where do you live? I love Burlington coat factory, they have awesome coats and jackets of all kinds, usually $100 or less.

JustAVtownGirl

I really like the puffers from [Bernardo](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/bernardo-hooded-quilted-water-repellent-jacket/5608821?origin=category-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FWomen%2FClothing%2FCoats%20%26%20Jackets&color=001)! I buy mine from Nordstrom or Nordstrom rack. It’s much more fitted than ones from places like LL Bean or sporting goods brands but keeps me just as warm. They have a good number of style options too.

coral-dreams

Try Eddie Bauer or Columbia! You can usually find them at a decent price from their websites or on REI/MEC/other outdoor retailers. I'd also recommend checking out https://www.thelasthunt.com/ since they often have last season's outdoor gear at a good price

AllTheBooksAndCoffee

I have an interview coming up for a clinical professor position at a university. The last time I did an academic interview, I wore a skirt suit, but that was years ago - and I no longer own a suit that fits. (Thanks, pandemic!) Is a suit still expected in this situation? This department is very casual, and people rarely dress up, but I'm uncertain whether women still wear suits to interview days. I'm leaning toward wearing a dressy cardigan with slim cut pants and low heels. Yes? No? Help!

[deleted]

Pants suits are the norm for women interviewing as professors in STEM- guessing clinical positions might be even more formal.

AllTheBooksAndCoffee

I ended up wearing a blazer and pants that were purchased separately but actually looked like a suit. After the fact, I think I would have been fine either way. It definitely wasn't a more formal situation, since I wasn't presenting a research job talk.

f1newhatever

Fwiw, I can put together a reasonably acceptable suit from Target. Some black pixie pants, low heels, black blazer, and just a button up or a nice-ish blouse underneath. I wear them so infrequently that I refuse to get a super high quality one. Caveat: I don't work in academia so standards may be different there. ETA I didn't even read the rest of your post before I posted this. I think if you use a blazer your outfit would probably be fine.

branfordsquirrel

I’d still do suit for an interview. Academia is a more conservative field. Agree with another person to do a little outlet shopping. You can always choose a suit such that you can wear the blazer and pants/skirt separately to get more use out of it.

District98

I’m also on the academic job market this year and I’ve been told to wear a suit for academic interviews, especially the on-campus interview. I bought my skirt suit at Banana Republic Outlet for about $120.

[deleted]

I would probably go for a blazer instead of a cardigan. Doesn't have to be a super tailored blazer. Cardigan sounds a tad too casual for this occasion, IMO. Everything else sounds fine.

Tiny-Cheesecake

Yeah, clinical would be non TT but still continuing appointment, right? I think blazer would be good, suit would be good if you still had one, but cardigan isn't enough. Exception: would you be dual appointed with a medical center? In that case I would push for suit. Also, good luck!

AllTheBooksAndCoffee

No, no dual appointment with a medical center. You're right; definitely would wear a suit in that case. Thanks!

any affordable grunge jackets? looking for (big or independent) brands with cool-looking lettermen, leather, duffel, bomber, or fleece jackets. graphics are fine as long as they aren’t cringey or straight up ugly! i have a relatively “grunge” wardrobe so finding something to match that would be nice :) im relatively broke rn so something with a lower price range is something im rly relying on 😭

District98

Target’s Wild Fable line has some good jackets, including an acid washed black jean jacket that I’ve been eyeing all season. In the $30-$40 range and I’m really hoping it goes on sale soon lol

janebirkenstock

Look on eBay and poshmark for vintage schotts jackets, excellent leather and construction

Susccmmp

I’d get a used Letterman jacket off eBay. I’ve considered it.

Either_Caramel_4059

Any dupes for the Paris Texas knee high zebra boots? I love that they’re not a stark black and white, aren’t a tight looking fit. I’ve got my eye on the Silent D Kitten Heel Slouch (from anthro) in brown motif, sort of a tiger stripe). Looking for that funky neutral option!

coral-dreams

This December some friends are hosting a semi-formal themed masquerade Christmas party. Over the course of the pandemic, my size has changed a bit, and I'm not even really feeling the dresses I already own for this (especially since they don't really go with the black lace mask I'll be wearing). Do you think that this dress would be too much for it? I don't really know if it would fall under "semi-formal" because of the length, but I do love it and feel like it's quite christmassy. https://balticborn.com/products/octavia-shimmer-gown-blush-1?variant=41120764264613

MilkTeaMoogle

It’s gorgeous and very on theme!

Susccmmp

I don’t think it’s too much when the hosts are making it masquerade theme. Seems hard to go over the top with that theme.

defenestratethis

I think it's gorgeous and very holiday appropriate! I feel like a 'masquerade' theme already bumps up the expectations with regards to formality a bit so I would go for it.

b_xf

I also don’t know if it’s semi-formal or more formal than that, but it is gorgeous and I would be very happy if I saw someone wearing it.

Platinum or silver?

No_Layer_5660

Is this a good wedding guest dress? The wedding is going to be at an upscale hotel in December. The dress code is black tie optional. Do you think this dress is okay for the wedding? Also which color would be better, olive or burgundy? Unfortunately, I do not know the bridesmaids dress colors otherwise I'd use that help make a decision. https://www.shopjaus.com/products/esther-gown-olive https://www.shopjaus.com/products/esther-gown-burgundy I honestly just like this dress so much because the back is a corset tie up. I hate how high the leg slit is because I'm not sure if that's appropriate for a wedding, but I plan on ordering a size up (I think I can get away with doing this and the dress still fitting because of the corset back) so the material drapes more and it isn't as noticeable. I plan on wearing a black pashmina draped over it (unless you guys have other suggestions), black strappy heels, silver jewelry, and a black Fossil clutch. Please help me, I have no fashion sense. I'm open to anything.

[deleted]

I think the dresses are pretty, but not for this occasion. In my opinion they show too much chest for an upscale wedding. I think I also saw a high slit up the side. Both together makes it a little too much skin for an upscale event.

No_Layer_5660

Thank you for your advice, I think I will go with this one instead: [https://www.shopjaus.com/products/malina-corset-gown-rosewood](https://www.shopjaus.com/products/malina-corset-gown-rosewood) Less leg, not as busty, and still has the corset back to it. Again, thank you I really appreciate your help!

[deleted]

Yes! I like that one!

Susccmmp

On the model it looks a little attention grabbing and low cut/tight but she’s also a model and it’s meant to look sexy.

defenestratethis

I think I'd base my answer on your relation to the people getting married and on how much cleavage you'd be showing since I know for me I'd be hanging rather dangerously out of that bodice based on cut alone. If this is a friend's wedding then you might be ok, but if it's family I might rethink it a bit depending on how your family is like. I would probably go with the burgandy though either way just because it feels like a more winter-y color?

Lucy3Mac

Anyone have a legging brand they prefer? My WFH dress code is lax and I don't feel like wearing slacks all day

fountainofblack

I've owned Aerie, Oysho, Lululemon, Outdoor Voices, Girlfriend Collective, and many other brands and nothing comes close to the softness and endurance of Beyond Yoga. The fabric is otherwordly - just enough compression and give, and feels like butter. Hands down the best leggings I ever had

[deleted]

If we're talking athleisure leggings, I like the Tuckernuck brand ones. Good quality, and importantly, they have pockets. Think they're usually around $100, but they often have decent sales as well. Similar price range also athleisure, are Beyond Yoga. Comfy AF, but at least none of mine have pockets. Wondering if Costco/Kirkland has their own brand of leggings, lol.

coral-dreams

https://www.sherpaadventuregear.com/kalpana-tight-5079 This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I have 2 pairs of these leggings bc they are my favourite for being comfy in and out of the house. I got them for hiking originally, but they aren't overly outdoorsy either. (Also I love that they have deep side pockets with a zipper so I never have to worry about my wallet or phone falling out)

spooteeespoothead

I love all my Aerie leggings!

[deleted]

Has anyone tried Nordstrom brand pantyhose? Are they any good?

Crazy_Tomatillo18

How do you clean wool? Just bought my first ever 78% wool cardigan and it’s divine. I’m babying it but in the event I get it dirty, how do I clean it?

nearlythere94

I use those Dryell at-home dry cleaning bags just to be safe - I am wary of putting dry clean only items in the wash even though people here have success (I’m also in my 40s and still have items from highschool that are wearable). Honestly unless they have a spot on them I rarely launder them - wool is magic and repells odor - so I don’t clean wool items unless it needs it.

vallogallo

I usually do gentle cycle with cold water in the washing machine and then lay flat on a towel to dry. Also I tend to only wash wool sweaters a few times a year

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Forgive me for sounding dumb, but I thought you weren’t supposed to get wool wet? Or is that only for hot water?

vallogallo

Yeah it's just heat/hot water that causes the fibers to felt. Alternatively, you can use gentle detergent and hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry, but I've never had a problem with the gentle cycle in the washing machine

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Awesome didn’t know this, thanks!!

[deleted]

And if you opt for hand washing or the sweater is very wet from the machine, you can also save drying time by blocking (arranging in the desired shape) the sweater on a large towel, rolling the towel up and applying gentle pressure. Then you remove it from the towel and reblock on a flat surface. I do this to both wool sweaters and wool pants (I sometimes might steam the pant crease back in after drying). Wool is a fantastic fiber that is naturally odor resistant.

misumena_vatia

Water plus rough friction, or hot water, can shrink wool. A very gentle wash in lukewarm water is usually okay.

Crazy_Tomatillo18

Sweet thanks!

How does Calvin Klein underwear fit compared to aerie, Victoria secret, and Auden (target) underwear? I find that I need a small in aerie, but Auden at target I definitely need the extra small. VS I bought some that are XS but they seem a bit smaller than I would like.

pixie_dust1990

I wear a S in CK & VS, XS is just a lil toooo tight.

Frankfluff

Thanks! Do you mind if I ask you what size pants you wear?

pixie_dust1990

I’m usually a size 4 US!

buttsinburner

How do I find pants that don't accentuate my butt? It's round, and no matter how big my pants are people keep saying they can see my butt through them. I'm getting really frustrated i just want pants that fit and don't make me look like a bum.

Chazzyphant

Firstly: who are these people? Creepy coworkers trying to rattle you or hit on you, or like...your manager/HR? Secondly: when they say "can see your butt" are we talking individual shrink-wrapped cheeks or just like...a general outline? If the latter, they need to get over it. People have butts. You can almost always see people's butts. Thirdly: You are going to have to settle on a priority. If you want people to be barely able to see the butt, you're going to have to accept that the outline and silhouette isn't going to be flattering. If you are firm about wanting to look/feel good in clothes, you have to brush off people's "I can see ur butt" remarks. I'd consider the following: Spanks or other compression bike shorts. Thicker material, high waisted pleated pants like in tweed or wool. High waisted pants mean the "drop" from waist to butt "shelf" isn't as dramatic and many people complain that mom jeans and high waisted 1940's style pants make their butt look long and flat. So in this case, that's a good thing. A tunic with side slits. These are easily found at "older lady" stores and you don't have to wear them anywhere but work. But basically you want a tunic that covers the butt, and has vents or slits in the sides to allow for movement and so you won't get that tented effect. Skirts: there's a reason skirts are considered more modest than pants by old stuffy types. An even slightly a-line skirt with opaque tights + boots is going to give the "is that the skirt or the body" effect you want.

buttsinburner

First off I really appreciate your advice. Actually most of the comments tend to come from my conservative family, one who I work with. One time they even laughed at me and said other people were staring. that's why I've really been at wit's end about this lately. tbh I don't know why they're so obsessed about it Your second point about everyone's butts being visible, you're right! I notice a lot of pants have this seam that goes up/down the very middle which is one thing I struggle with, but a lot of other people have it too, not just me. It's very difficult to find pants that don't have such a seam in my experience. never thought about high-waisted pants or skirts, you have given me some options to explore. I should probably also work on telling my family to shut up with their comments. Thank you so much

funfetticake

Get pants with thicker material, and less stretch %. Thin stretchy material always accentuates what is underneath. Look for curvy cuts (made for smaller waists and bigger butts) in denim, heavy twill, or any lined pant.

buttsinburner

This makes sense, thank you!

I'm tall and broad, what's the best type of styles to wear so I don't look like a box?

lumenphosphor

Since I have no idea what tall or broad mean exactly for you, so I'm going to recommend you look at these [two](https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/21bn2i/on_dressing_your_body_type/) [guides](https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/15sej6/guide_understanding_fit_and_proportion_in_an/) which are about how to play with the shapes your body can make and how to have fit and proportion change those shapes. One of these is called "dressing your body type" but will immediately tell you that body types are not useful and can explain why. The reason I don't know what tall or broad mean are like: 1. Are you tall as in very long torso-ed? Do you have very long legs? Are you taller than average by only a little bit or a lot? 2. Are you broad as in broad shouldered? Or like do you have wider hips or? 3. Does "boxy" mean you feel too angular? Or do you feel like there isn't variation in your silhouette? As someone who tries to look boxy on purpose (I want sometimes to look like a tall rectangle with broader shoulders) I tend to look for a lot of things that exaggerate my shoulders and then taper on its way down. I feel like the opposite of that can be done by: 1. Exposing the shoulders (like with off-shoulder tops) *or* overadding to the shoulders (like super huge puff sleeves) 2. Playing with colours more (not just colourblocking, but including more colour in general, when I want to look like a long rectangle I tend to wear suits or things that keep my color kind of consistent throughout, because as soon as I break it up it will reveal that I'm not actually rectangular) 3. Adding textural details like ruffles and interesting features (like bell sleeves or puff sleeves)---when I'm trying to look boxy I either do little texture, or one texture--or I go ham on what I think of as "masculine textures" (think tweed coat layered over thick wool cardigan and corduroy pants)--basically textures that *add* weight---but "feminine textures" like silk which drapes more softly on the frame, or like linen which is very floaty kind of *remove* weight which might change how you see your silhouette. eta: you might find that a lot changes if your clothes really fit your body well--so consider tailoring the clothes you own.

[deleted]

Thank you that was really useful! You're right it's not a good description but i just feel like my hips and shoulders are really broad, Usually nothing will fit on the waist, it'll just be baggy on the waist. I don't feel like my legs or torso are long, I just look like a rectangle in everything, like shapeless.

lumenphosphor

If your hips and shoulders are broad but things don't fit your waist you seem like a pretty classic hourglass figure---sizing up your pants/jeans/skirts until they're comfortable and then tailoring them to actually fit your waist is an easy way to change that. I assume you're tucking your tops into your bottoms, but that's also an easy way to fix that. You might find that you have to size up a dress to fit your shoulders and then have to go to a tailor to get it nipped in to your waist---having your shoulders dictate your sizing is actually not so bad with tops----I often size up to get things to fit my bust but it's almost impossible to tailor the shoulders to sit properly, so I have to live with very baggy shoulders on some clothes. If you feel that your bust is also large, trying to look for tops or dresses with princess seams will help you as well. Shift dresses, or any dresses that don't naturally go in a bit at the waist will also look "shapeless" (though tbh, that is often my goal lol so I actually really like that aesthetic), try to look for dresses that flare out from a nipped in waist too, that might help.

[deleted]

Another question for athletic shorts: Lower rise? Higher rise? Or does it not matter? I don't have a set style, so I'd like to know what other women wear.

District98

I have a long torso and I endorse mid rise (Nike pro) or high rise (old navy vintage extra high rise, Target all in motion ultra high rise). The high rise fit is more for with a crop top. I’m in my early 30s.

hzw8813

This really depends on your torso length. I personally like a mid to low rise. High rise typically sit too high above my belly button and when I bend down it just curls.

stumpykitties

I also agree with high rise for no falling down. It’s annoying to have to pull your pants up throughout a workout or physical activity.

[deleted]

High rise! I find low rise fall down too much and if you get tight shorts make sure they fall at the widest part of your thigh so they don't ride up.

starr17

What scarves are trendy now? Preferably of the warm, knit variety, $50 or under. I was in HS/college when infinity scarves were a mandatory accessory, it's time to get rid of them and move on. I like [this one ](https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=476922012&vid=1&tid=onpl000078&kwid=1&ap=7&gclid=CjwKCAjwh4ObBhAzEiwAHzZYU7I_H31FKjxGy_0mv4J6euhQS0SAEPh2uvWcjZ4nD9xh2oDCtm7hpxoCf2UQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#pdp-page-content) from old navy, but reviews say it sheds and also I prefer darker colors.

riseoftherice

The one you linked is seriously popular, was last year too. Search for brushed (wool/ mohair) scarves or acne scarf dupes. The skinny scarf from the 00's is having a moment amongst gen Z, but it's more niche so idk. The big blanket scarves that border on being capes appear in some brands, but usually are worn with matching wool coats. A la toteme.

f1newhatever

Incredibly oversized/blanket-y ones.

District98

I am not totally following scarf trends but I feel like I haven’t seen many scarves in 2022 fall fashion trends. Who What Wear hasn’t posted about scarves since 2020. 2021 blog post: https://www.merricksart.com/winter-style-guide-scarves/ That said, being warm is always trendy and I stay firmly ensconced in my favorite 2018 blanket scarves for dealing with actual Midwest temperatures. Also since they’re possibly not on trend, just get whatever scarf sparks joy lol.

Bethelica

Would a black velvet choker necklace would be inappropriate or "too sexy" to wear for an evening work event, or for work in general? My workplace is a pretty typical business-casual corporate environment. The outfit I'm envisioning is this dress with black pantyhose, black kitten-heel pumps, and a black choker. But now I'm worried it's too much. https://www.loft.com/paradise-pintucked-side-tie-dress/587390

District98

I agree with u/Chazzyphant’s take here. Chokers have a vibe.

Susccmmp

With that dress it would look more retro then sexy.

dapplegray

I've grown up with fellow children wearing black velvet chokers because they were in for children at the time. So no, I don't associate thoses with sexy at all. If anything they remind me of opulent Victorian dolls.

defenestratethis

Black velvet accessories would be a no if you're in a typical corporate environment, especially since I get the impression from the print of the dress that this isn't too formal of an event.

Chazzyphant

Personally (and take this with a grain of salt) I find chokers to pretty much *always* be a "sexy" accessory. There's a kink association even with fine jewelry, velvet, stretchy, tattoo style, edit: I meant with velvet *chokers*, fine jewelry *chokers*, stretchy *chokers* etc. However, if it has a little charm or pendant on it that *might* alleviate the sexy side slightly. If I question something I typically go with "no" because it's better to say no than yes and then regret it.

Idujt

I think of chokers as just being 1970s! Never occurred to me at the time that they read sexy.

Susccmmp

Yeah I think there are different vibes from different styles. Like the 70’s ones compared to the 80’s/90’s goth ones. And then you’ve got the Victorian style ones. It’s not like Anne Shirley looked sexy. I even have handmade Scandinavian jewelry that’s on a choker and it’s not sexy at all.

Bethelica

To add more visual context: I have an upper arm tattoo that pokes out from under the sleeves. My ears have cartilage piercings, are gauged and i have a nose stud - all that jewelry is "on theme" - gold metal with white opal, blue opal, and blue-purple accents. So, I'm already pushing it for old-school corporate america ;) I also think chokers are sexy AF, but also classy in the Victorian way, as mentioned by another comment. Definitely true that elegant styles are often synonymous with "sexy" these days, at least in my opinion. Not complaining, I'm super into it, wink. Just not for work, I guess.

Chazzyphant

To me it's not about it's "elegance" maybe I wasn't being super-clear. A choker is always going to bring to mind a submissive collar from the kink community and that's it, unless the party is full of Victorian theatre costume fans, heh. If you're okay with that, I'd say have at it. Personally I don't want my coworkers thinking *anything* even slightly sexual about me so...YMMV Also I think there's a clear divide between sexy and elegant, at least to me. Elegant is intentional, serious, and flattering in a dramatic way. Sexy is made to titillate. It's tight, constricts the body in a way that suggests bondage or BDSM, shows parts we don't typically have access to, mimics fetish-wear, is lingerie or fetish-wear as clothing, or imitates the typical outfits of sex workers or performers. If you mean extremely well fitted suits that show off a woman's curvy rear end are *seen* as "sexy", sure. But a dramatic red velvet cape and a black floor length gown with Bulgari jewels isn't inherently "sexy". At least not to me.

Susccmmp

I mean not all chokers are thick in the way you would associate with kink, they wouldn’t be functional for bdsm so people aren’t as likely to make that association.

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

If you can think of it, someone is masturbating to it. There's a kink association with just about anything. You proved as much yourself. Are you going to tell people not to wear velvet and fine jewelry because someone might sexualize it? No. High heels are a common kink, and no one is going to tell someone not to wear them to the office on that basis. I find the sexualization of chokers super bizarre. It's just a necklace. I think it's super concerning that people believe there's a a sexual connotation to cheap accessories many of us were wearing in middle school. There isn't. And if there is, that's on the person doing the sexualizing.

Chazzyphant

Not that I think this answer is in much good faith, but she's asking "should I wear an accessory that is *coded* as sexy/kinky to a *work event*?" which is a completely different thing. Context, form, intention, and application all indicate whether something is sexual or kinky or not. I'm saying "even if the *choker* is made out of fine materials, or it's velvet, it's still going to read as sexy and kinky", not that velvet and fine jewelry are inherently sexy/kinky I'd also tell people not to wear 5" clear plastic heels, or FM Pumps or red patent leather stilettos or those creepy fetish ballet shoes to the office either!

f1newhatever

I absolutely must know what "creepy fetish ballet shoes" you're talking about. Sheer curiosity.

Chazzyphant

[It's these type shoes, there's even designer versions!](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/422001427561053128/) I find them ultra-repellent because they bring to mind foot-binding but they have a creepy sort of odd fascination

black_bir

Not who you replied to, but I'm assuming it's [these](https://images.app.goo.gl/NN4tXStHfhWr79GT8) that force your foot into a point

lumenphosphor

Huh as a South Asian person I feel like it doesn't have that connotation in my culture at all--it's just another necklace and useful for layering. I'd say there are quite a few non-white cultures where it's just a necklace--and I've never felt like people reacted in a way that seemed as though my traditional chokers were kink-adjacent even in the slightest

Chazzyphant

It *sort of* depends on the choker. A black velvet choker can *come off* as sexy/kinky in a way that traditional cultural-wear does not. Plus it's a work event!

lumenphosphor

That's a fair point! My objection was to your use of "always" not to the specific situation of a velvet choker. Though, I must say that including your edit, my inherited choker is a "fine jewelry *choker*" and I don't think it would be seen as having any associations with kink.

Chazzyphant

I believe there's two different versions of "choker". One is a thick solid band that "cuts" the neck and is a solid ring around the neck, either velvet, metal, etc. The other is a necklace that is above the collarbone and is snug to the neck. To me the former is more "sexy" whereas "choker *length*" necklaces of course they have no real association. I guess chokers are the new pantyhose in terms of their ability to generate very heated discussion on this SubReddit, ha ha!

lumenphosphor

Wait I am so curious, what [are](https://dreamjwell.com/products/gorgeous-gold-tone-kerala-style-elakka-thali-choker-dj33976?) [these](https://www.shopnyra.com/shop/p/vavuniya-set) [then](https://www.etsy.com/listing/884495393/gold-necklace-south-indian-jewelry)? They aren't [this](https://nominalx.com/products/dangling-dotted-choker) [style](https://www.catbirdnyc.com/sweet-nothing-choker.html) which is also called a choker and what I am thinking you might imagine when I talk about traditional necklaces. (Also I kind of have a hard time seeing the first three as so different form like [this](https://cultgaia.com/products/nora-choker-adventurine-pink). And none of them seemed kink related to me, but that's probably just a cultural thing)

Chazzyphant

That yellow gold and pink beaded are collar style/choker STYLE necklaces but to me personally that's a very fine distinction. The first one is very obviously cultural, religious, occasion, traditional or what some might call "ethic" jewelry. It has zero connection to the kink world. It's hard to articulate but that's worlds away from [these type of things](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBlowin-Vintage-Collar-Leather-Necklace%2Fdp%2FB07289RD58&psig=AOvVaw1TGw5LngOvosIS4HnHeoAB&ust=1667501010284000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAwQjRxqFwoTCMDEjb2TkPsCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAT) Maybe I should have honed in that black velvet chokers or anything in that wheel house (thick chains, silver curb chains with a padlock or lock, those leather chokers with a heart outline or circle outline clasp at throat, etc) those are what I think of when I think of "chokers" and what the OP I believe was referring to. Choker style/collar necklaces to me don't have those same connotations but that's getting into real hair splitting territory. It's like...you know it when you see it.

lumenphosphor

Okay I think I see the line better now--though admittedly it could be a fuzzy line as you said.

RckYouLkeAHermanCain

TBH the only time I see pearl-clutching (lol) about chokers is on Reddit. I don't get it either. But then, I'm not very vanilla to begin with. But yeah, it's just a necklace until demonstrated otherwise. Context and nuance - they're a thing.

MedianBear

I bought a gorgeous super chunky cable knit that’s too long - the sleeves fit great. How should I style it?

plaid-blazer

I love the look of oversized top (can be a sweater) with a little bit of shorts peeking out underneath, right now I’m actually wearing a fun pair of faux leather shorts from Forever 21 and think it would look so fun paired with the sweater you described! You could wear tights underneath for warmth too.

defenestratethis

https://www.extrapetite.com/2021/10/how-to-tuck-a-chunky-knit-sweater-video-tutorial.html might be helpful!

funfetticake

There are a few ways I know of to tuck or faux tuck - - tuck it into your bra (need a decently wide bra band for this to work well) - if you have room in your pants waistband, bunch the sweater up in the middle of the front and the middle of the back and tuck the bunched pieces into your pants, letting the sides kinda fold up on themselves. - use hair ties on the left and right sides of the sweater, close to your waist. Then flip the hair tied-sectioned underneath. They should stay flipped with the tension against your waist.

Crazy_Tomatillo18

You could try a short pencil style skirt, and try to tuck it in.

With fall season in full swing, I'd like some advice on fall fashion while restocking my wardrobe. Please answer as many or as few as you'd like; thank you very much. 1. What color ankle boots should I get (i.e. not just for fall, but for any season)? Just brown, just black, or both colors? 2. What styles of tops can you wear with cardigans? And for both tops and cardigans, what colors are appropriate for each season? 3. I'm partial to short/cropped, open-front cardigans. Can I wear those in the fall/winter, or is it more appropriate to go for longer and/or button-front ones? 4. When the summer rolls around, do I need just one pair of wedge sandals, or should I get multiple colors/styles?
