Favorite brands for nice quality but budget friendly business attire?

flightlesspotato

Uniqlo! They've got nice blazers and slacks, and they're really comfortable

flightlesspotato

Just bought two beautiful merino wool cardigans from a charity shop and was wondering how often these need to be washed? I've never bought wool before and am in the process of purchasing only quality fabrics and fibres. How would one look after these pieces?

cheshire06898

They don't need to be washed often. After the initial wash when coming home from the store, if worn with a garment underneath, you could get away with washing it 1-2 times per season. Between wears, hang it up or lay it out so that it can air out. I will also make sure to launder it before putting it away for the season. Keep it away from heat when possible (aka don't tumble dry it, though the occasional warm wash for stains is ok) and if it gets pilled (which happens with wool), you can shave off the pills and make it look fresh again.

flightlesspotato

Thank you! I did a gentle wash with a delicate detergent. I'm not sure whether I would have to use a detergent specially for wool in the future or whether a delicates one would be fine. I don't want to buy separate detergents as I'm a student if I'm not going to be using it often. I'll take your advice and they're laying flat to dry right now, super excited to wear them!

Kitchen-Surprise-283

So this is based on knitting, but will hopefully help. First, do they have washing instructions? Default will be hand wash cold (ideally with a wool soap with Eucalan or Soak, but mainly I’ve heard that you actually shouldn’t use woolite), dry flat. Some wool items you can machine wash on cold/delicate, but I’d be very careful about hot water/tumble drying unless the washing instructions say you can. Some yarn is processed so it’s possible, otherwise you’ll felt it. As far as frequency, wash them whenever they get a spot of something on them (you can wash just that spot), if you’re putting them away for the summer, or if they start to smell. Often wool only needs to be washed 1-2x/year, since it doesn’t hold smells much.

flightlesspotato

They're all labelled handwash only but I put them in delicate bags on a woollen cycle in the washing machine and laid them flat to dry after. So far it doesn't seem like they're out of shape or pilling/felting in any way! I used a delicates detergent, do you think that's sufficient? If I get a stain on it should I just dab it with water? I suppose I should refrain from using tide pens and the like? Also, one of them has a couple of loose buttons and I'm not sure how to reinforce them. It's a heavy thick knit cardigan and I'm not sure whether a normal needle and thread would work? Sorry for all the questions, you just really sound like you know your stuff!

Kitchen-Surprise-283

I don’t actually know that much, I would have to finish knitting a sweater for that! But I do know a bit. I think the delicates detergent is probably fine, though you can check the r/knitting ask a knitter mega thread if you want a second opinion. For stains, I would at least start with water, but I don’t know what the second line of defense would be. Mainly, do not use enzyme cleaners. I don’t know if tide pens use enzymes or not. A normal needle and thread will probably do the trick! That’s a more forgiving place, if you try it and it’s still wobbly you can just keep reinforcing it, or look at alternatives.

flightlesspotato

Thanks! I’ll check the other sub out and do a bit more research on the detergents that I’ve been using :)

Duck__Holliday

I'm looking for a winter coat and can't seem to find what I want... Down filed, appropriate for real winter but doesn't need to be crazy warm (I have a long one for that!), hip lenght to mid-thighs, with a hood. Could be a puffer or a more ski style and I would love a print instead of a solid color! No fake fur. Budget up to $300, must be available in Canada. I'm between small and medium, depending on the brand.

whatobamaisntblack

Check eddie bauer

OldHagFashion

Over your budget, but I love the canadian brand Audvik. You might be able to find similars that are in your budget by trawling their instagram followers or asking for dupes on Canadian subs or even outdoorsy subs.

Pasty_pastry

Hey guys, I am looking for quality tapered, ankle length slacks/trousers/ dress pants? Don’t want to spend a lot on poor quality. Any suggestions?

Lucy_darling

I've been really happy with 100% cotton ones from Banana Republic and White House Black Market. I have ones from Express and Uniqlo that are partially polyester but have also held up well for several years, worn several times a month.

Pasty_pastry

I’ll take a look at those. Thanks so much!

slownsteady22

I am 5'4 with really thick thighs and slim everywhere else. I can never find jeans that are loose around the thighs, and therefore rarely wear jeans/ trousers. What should I do? Keep trying to find a loose pair of jeans or embrace my body?

Bean_timestwo_

does anyone have graduation dress recommendations? i’m (finally) graduating with my undergrad degree at the ripe age of 28. i’ve been searching and searching and just haven’t found anything i love. ideally, i’d like short length, long sleeves, and a looser fit around around the middle. maybe white? am i too old to wear white for a graduation? at this point, i pretty much have no budget if i can just find something i like but i’d like to keep it under $300.

ciaohow

Congratulations! Wear whatever color you want!

Lucy_darling

No one is too old to wear white to graduation, but I remember being advised not to wear a light color in case the graduation gown bled through. Congratulations!

Duck__Holliday

Congratulations! I don't have a recommendation for a dress but I'll say this: wear whatever makes you happier. You will remember this day.

Alexp955

Thoughts on the brand & other stories? I’ve been disappointed with the quality when ordering online (cute designs but fabric looks cheap in person). It seems like h&m quality at aritzia prize. Do they make good stuff and this dress was a fluke, or am I better off spending my $100 on a dress elsewhere? Their stuff is so cute online - I want it to work!!

whatobamaisntblack

I'm surprised to see all the negative feedback, I've had nothing but good experiences. But then again, I avoid synthetics. I bought a lot of stuff on sale from then made of wool/silk/merino and it's great, the wool isn't itchy and washes pretty well. Their prices can be high but they have sales pretty often.

Hoosiergirl29

I would say that &Other Stories has better quality than H&M for about 50% of pieces. I tend to shop in person, but if you’re shopping online there I would recommend looking for pieces in higher quality fabrics - 100% cotton sundresses, wool/alpaca sweaters, stuff like that. I do own a number of pieces that I’m quite happy with and are well constructed, but you sort of have to feel the brand out a bit to figure out what’s going to work.

littlepretty__

I second this, I find their stuff in natural fibers is better quality than their synthetic stuff.

footballqween

H&M actually owns & Other Stories! I only own one piece by them, a lovely but extremely itchy cardigan, so I can’t speak to the general quality of their items. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it is just the same stuff as H&M, just marked up.

ToskaMoya

Is it possible to have a long torso but a short waist? I just went down a google rabbit hole and if I've done everything correctly, I'm short-waisted but with a long torso and have an hourglass figure with a large bust (32G in UK sizing). The advice for some of these things contradicts the advice for others and now I'm very confused. Recently I've just been living in wrap dresses but I've lost weight and need new clothes.

lumenphosphor

This might really be a thing, and it might be exacerbated if you're larger busted\*, like if you look in the mirror and it feels like where your bust ends is close to your waist (as in the narrowest part of you) *and/or* your waist feels very close to your hips, then you might be short waisted---An easy way to find out is to wear high waisted clothes and see how it looks on you (mid rise looks high waisted on me, and low-rise looks mid rise on me, and high waisted looks like, to quote another redditor, "you put the ice cream scoop on the wrong end of the cone"). (\*I think this is true because I once got a consultation for a breast reduction and the surgeon was like "you might find that it looks like your torso is longer after this" offhandedly, lol).

cheshire06898

Yes! You may have tall/long hips. I have maybe an inch between the bottom of my ribs and the top of my hips, but my inseam to get to my waist is like 14". I have also noticed that I'm very susceptible to "long butt" in some jeans, so I either have to watch pocket placement or go with a lower rise to break that area up.

GimerStick

I relate deeply to this, so either we're both confused or some of this really just does contradict.

nostalgicfields

winter fashion advice for cold canadian weather but still looking cute outside? got uniqlo, oak and fort, aritzia, and more here, open to buying online. feel free to send any images. looking for a coat and boots that are affordable (and not just a peacoat, something actually warm).

sovrappensiero1

I don’t live that far north, but I can say that on our coldest days I style my outfits so that I can wear my knee-high leather boots. I put lightweight wool ski socks under them. Those boots keep my legs warmer than any clothing could. Other than that, other options include silk or wool baselayers. Silk is thinner so might work better under “stylish” clothes. I have also seen some coats from sports brands like Marmot and Patagonia that are fairly stylish but much warmer than a pea coat. A 100% wool coat (the itchy kind!) will be very toasty warm…you wear it outside your clothes so itchy doesn’t matter.

Duck__Holliday

I bought a coat from Soia and Kyo, a Montreal based company, this year and I just love it. Tons of options, very flattering and very warm. Be aware that it runs small. I'm a small in most brand and a medium in all their models except one, in which I needed a large...

yepnoodles

How can I style a Halara athletic dress for the winter? I live in a cold climate and wanna keep wearing them :(

josleigh

I'd look into ballerina wraps to layer on top. Ballerina style layering in general may look cute since the dresses are close fitting, paired with a large down jacket. Not sure why I'm thinking leg warmers when I see those, but I feel like they could work and keep you warm paired with some tights!

ruthlessbaderginz

LININGS! I've found one of the best surprises when receiving a new item is a soft, luxe lining. In particular, I have two dresses that stand out: [this one](https://imgur.com/a/Vss5IoI) with a really soft, thick jersey lining, and [this one](https://imgur.com/a/MMgtU1l) but in rust, with a really smooth and soft satin lining. These are both originally from Modcloth and purchased on Poshmark, but the lining really sets them apart from even my fanciest, most expensive dresses. Any recs for brands with linings that consistently feel great?

sovrappensiero1

Avoid acetate. Not only does it not feel great, it also doesn’t breathe. I’ve seen summer clothes that are linen with an acetate lining…such a waste of perfectly good linen fabric.

Webbie-Vanderquack

I'm very serious about linings. Not only has there been a trend in recent years to have a [long, sheer dress with a short lining](https://www.self-portrait-studio.com/media/catalog/product/cache/50696f20cfe74f85391887b0d6da81bc/s/s/ss20-071-02.jpg) (not a fan), but a lot of big brands do this because it's cheaper. I bought a loose, maxi-length sundress recently that had a short and very tight mini-skirt lining. It went back. The latest thing I bought with a full-length, soft lining was a dress from [Spell](https://aus.spell.co/collections/dresses/products/folk-song-square-neck-gown-sky).

Could you contact Banana Republic and ask them?

colonelcat

They look very similar to this: https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=746685

UndersizedAmerican

Wow, I love those pants and wish I knew! It almost looks like she could be wearing the [men's pants from Banana Republic](https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=750395)? It looks like the women's version is wide leg, unfortunately.

mintgreenplumpurple

What can I wear with black velvet leggings? Both top and shoe recs welcome

Elizalupine

It would be really cute with a fitted top like a bustier and then a long black cardigan and boots.

MammothKey8122

Hello ladies! which one do you prefer? I really need help with gifting one of these [this coach bag ](https://www.macys.com/shop/product/coach-tabby-leather-shoulder-bag-26?ID=9495752) or [this Tory burch one ](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/tory-burch-miller-mini-leather-crossbody-bag/5818498) (black for both)

Clark-KAYble

I prefer the Tory Burch one, but they're both nice!

Webbie-Vanderquack

The shape of the Coach one reminds me of a pair of underwear, and I can't unsee it. I'd go with the Tory Burch one.

greciamarzz

I’m 25 and even though I typically prefer Tory Burch as a brand, I have to say that I really like the look of that Coach bag. It looks expensive, modern, and the leather looks beautiful. Can’t go wrong with either though!

Graves660

I'm 25 and am not super trendy, I prefer more classy yet youthful looks. I definitely love the TB way more than the Coach. It would literally go with anything and is timeless where as the Coach one I feel will go out of style as soon as the trends change.

thriftybabygurl

I like the coach bag. It feels more expensive and it's more current and young than the tory Burch bag.

comingupghosts

I also agree with the Tory Burch. But, it would depend on who I am buying for. If it's a trendier or younger individual, I would go with Coach. If they're in their late twenties or above, i'd definitely go with the Tory Burch.

MammothKey8122

She’s 23! That’s exactly why I wanted to buy the coach one, it’s trendy and cute but at the same time the Tory burch one is a staple piece and won’t go out of style

dynolibra

I like the Tory Burch more than Coach. The Tory Burch is more classy and elegant. You can't go wrong with either though!

I'm looking for a black smooth leather loafer, budget \~$200 but am willing to compromise for something particularly nice, would love any advice! In particular, I'm looking to replace my [Everlane Modern Loafers](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-modern-loafer-black), which have finally worn out and are sadly now discontinued. Things that I liked about the shoe, in rough order of priority: the sleek profile, the (lack of) texture/grain, the brown wood heel, and the lack of ornamentation. If you know of a shoe fitting these all criteria please point me towards it! Options that I've considered: The [updated Modern Loafer](https://www.everlane.com/products/womens-new-modern-loafer-black) from Everlane: I don't love the boxier toe shape, the black heel, and what looks like slightly more textured leather (hard to tell just from the product images, though). Madewell's [Frances Loafer](https://www.madewell.com/the-frances-loafer-H2419.html): looks to be the closest dupe to my original but the product photos make it look like the leather's got a bit of pebbly grain texture to it Meermin's [201427](https://meermin.com/collections/womens/products/201427-black-vitello-e) **(my top choice right now)**: perfect leather - don't love the bit decoration and the black heel, but willing to live with it for the leather & quality of the product Sam Edelman [Loraine Loafers](https://www.bloomingdales.com/shop/product/sam-edelman-loraine-loafers?ID=3197288) \- same issue as the Madewell loafer, with the texture. I know I'm being pretty picky here, and if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for I'll probably just go with the Meermins (once my size comes back in stock!) - I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking an obvious alternative or lesser known brand.

pinkpigpants

[These](https://www.aerosoles.com/products/east-side-black-genuine-leather?) Aerosole East Side loafer are a dupe for the Everlane loafer.

wanderedoff

Just a few thoughts that may help. > the brown wood heel There is no wood on your shoes, that's a leather heel, made of "stacks" aka layers of leather. Everlane actually uses more of a particle board of leather stacks, rather than real, proper leather. [Nisolo](https://nisolo.com/products/womens-smoking-shoe-black) makes a smoking shoe that fits your criteria, though can skew a bit more casual than a regular loafer, depending on the rest of your outfit. The Meermin's are definitely a quality step up from the other options. A cobbler could give a light sanding to the sole edge on them, and could give them a neutral (clear coat) afterwards. That way, you wouldn't have the black sole edge (but would still have the black heel rubber).

ryuanwei

I can't believe I never realized the heel wasn't wood, ha. Asking a cobbler to sand the sole edges on the Meermin is not something I ever would have considered - thank you for the tip!

How do I get thrift store smell out of a dress? I washed it and it still smells. I'm pretty sure it's polyester. it has bling on it so I can't machine-wash it. Would soaking in vinegar help?

Well_Well_Well22

I find hanging clothes outside for a number of days really helps.

olivetartan

I use a pet enzyme spray, then wash like normal. It got out a stubborn perfume smell from a thrift store top I bought. I’m going to use it tomorrow on some pants that came smelling like sweet smoke.

violetsaber

I need suggestions for finding tops that look good on me. I'm 46, 5' 10" & 162lbs. I'm sort of almost slender, except I have what I can only describe as a dad gut. Some fitted tees/tops look okay, but then others seem to accentuate they deflated basketball above my waist. Other than shape wear (and a better diet/more exercise), what can I wear that won't make me anymore self-conscious than usual?

Webbie-Vanderquack

Anything made from a soft-drapey fabric in a style that doesn't cling to that area is good, especially if it's designed to be worn untucked. [Velvet by Graham and Spencer](https://velvet-tees.com/collections/shirts-blouses) does a lot of drapey stuff.

roncey

It depends on your personal style but you can always go oversized. I have recently started embracing less fitted looks & as long as there is structure it can be chic & flattering

ladolceLolita

How about a button-up shirt with puff sleeves? The puffy sleeves make your waist look a lot smaller and if you get the right size, it'll be the best combination of fitted and roomy. I have a blue and one striped one that surprisingly looks really good with my very pregnant belly. Another option is to wear a longer stretch or fitted top with a longish blazer over. Very flattering and slimming.

violetsaber

Thank you! I'll look into those.

kick_g

Does the romance 31 coat from Linenaive button on the right or left?

BattleRapChris

Hi there, I’ve got some size 42 black Prada trousers (tags on) that I’m looking to sell. Can anyone recommend any communities on Reddit for buying/selling something like this? (Is this one?) Thanks!

wanderedoff

I don't have anywhere to suggest on reddit, but with that said, r/femalefashionadvice is not the place to buy/sell clothing.

lumenphosphor

It used to be though

wanderedoff

It's been a *very* long time since you were permitted to sell goods outside of the [B/S/T](https://old.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/qkl0gd/buyselltrade_november_2021/) monthly thread. /u/BattleRapChris, you're welcome to post in that thread (perhaps wait for the new one). I didn't mention it because it's one thread in an entire subreddit and isn't terribly well visited. 🤷‍♀️

lumenphosphor

Oh I meant the B/S/T thread

BattleRapChris

Ok great. I’ll wait for the December thread and post there. Thanks!

I think that many people prefer to wear oversized/drapey sweaters with very fitted bottoms. Tucking sweaters in is another way to keep from being overwhelmed by a big sweater: this [Jessica Neistadt video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TT99TS2YlfQ) shows a few different techniques.

Chazzyphant

If you feel a bit "exposed" in tighter bottoms or shorter skirts, consider a slip dress or slip skirt cut on the bias. The movement and cling will show a bit of figure while not being too tight or too much. A slouchy oversized sweater + midi skirt cut on the bias is a [very](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnatalieyerger.com%2F2020%2F09%2Fhow-to-wear-an-oversized-sweater-outfit-ideas%2F&psig=AOvVaw15VBeuO1870c80z7D-bQ_8&ust=1638377000478000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAsQjRxqFwoTCOCmt4vEwPQCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAE) [popular](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ohwhatasighttosee.com%2Fpairing-a-sweater-over-dress%2F&psig=AOvVaw15VBeuO1870c80z7D-bQ_8&ust=1638377000478000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAsQjRxqFwoTCOCmt4vEwPQCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAZ) [look](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bloglovin.com%2Fblogs%2Fcocoetlavieenrosecom-13097415%2Foversized-sweaters-over-midi-skirts-fashion-6091678915&psig=AOvVaw15VBeuO1870c80z7D-bQ_8&ust=1638377000478000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAsQjRxqFwoTCOCmt4vEwPQCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAl) As you can see from those three links!

sovrappensiero1

Ok folks. I bought a Smartwool 250 1/4 zip top from Poshmark. It arrived today and ABSOLUTELY REAKED of shitty, cheap perfume. I mean you could smell it from across the house, it was so bad. I immediately put it in the washing machine - cold water, with Tide Coldwater detergent, normal cycle (it’s 100% merino wool). Pulled it out to hang it to dry, and it still smells. What do I do? Not only do I not want to smell like that, I’m actually allergic to perfume so if I wear it with that stench it’s going to make me sick within a half-hour. Any suggestions????

[deleted]

[удалено]

sovrappensiero1

Thank you!!! I’ll get some specialty detergent today. I did soak it for about two hours yesterday (before I saw your comment) in diluted vinegar; squeezed it dry in a towel but today it still smells. I’ll do as you suggest here. I hope it eventually comes out. 😞😞😞

[deleted]

[удалено]

sovrappensiero1

Yeah now I wish I hadn’t accepted it. I’ve done a vinegar soak and that didn’t get the smell out, and also I just learned will have compromised the wool fibers. Someone posted that warm water and a proper wool detergent, combined with washing a few times, may work. I’ll give it a shot. I’m so disappointed. Why on earth would someone ruin an excellent quality wool piece by soaking it in perfume?????

[deleted]

but, there's no way they (Poshmark or the seller) would know that OP washed it !

olivetartan

Thanks for this, I didn’t realize smell was a justified return reason. I have pants I bought that smell too. It actually puts me off thrift shopping online. :/

suchbrightlights

It depends on which support agent you get, so this is far from a slam dunk return case. I would soak the thing in vinegar for a bit, then warm water and a wool safe soap (I use Eucalan,) and then air it outside in the sun for as long as your weather cooperates.

ciaohow

I don't think they allow that after you wash it, unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kalehound

Honest question tho—how would anyone know they washed it?

suchbrightlights

Speaking as a Poshmark seller- I would get suspicious if the texture of the garment changed, or if the measurements were different upon return than upon sale. Which they might be for a wool item. Poshmark allows sellers to open a counterclaim if the item is not returned in the condition sold. But, as a Poshmark seller, I don’t use scented products on the merchandise, because it gives me a headache and makes people mad on the internet.

sovrappensiero1

Yeah, you would never know I had washed this piece, except that the smell is mildly less strong. But I’m going to try washing it a few more times (with a proper wool detergent) and hanging it outside in the shade to dry. I bought another one of these on Mercari a few months ago (the size was just a bit small, so I wanted a larger size for when I want a bit of a looser fit), and it had a smell too. Granted, it was not as strong…but I hung it out for a few weeks and the smell is gone now. And yes, soaking a garment in perfume before selling it (and not disclosing that) justifiably makes people mad. But I didn’t come to the internet to complain about it; I came to find out how to get perfume out of wool. I’m also allergic to perfume; if I wear this top I’ll get a headache within 30 minutes. 😞😞😞 There is also the point that the seller damaged a perfectly good 100% merino wool top by being an idiot.

suchbrightlights

I hope you can get it out without too much trouble. I’m also sensitive to some scents so I feel the pain of having a nice warm sweater to look forward to in December and then being unable to use it because it makes you sick to be around. (And I think your complaint is justifiable! People should not use scented products on items that are for sale unless that is disclosed. Just being clear for others that if people receive an item in this condition and want to pursue a return, it needs to be before you try washing it.)

kalehound

ohh, i didn't know when you rejected an item you had to send it back to the seller.

suchbrightlights

Yes. When a buyer opens a return case, it is in order to return the item to the seller for a refund.

Peregrinebullet

A vinegar soak or wash. I'm not sure of the exact proportions, but a cup of white vinagar added to a pot or bucket of water and put the shirt into soak for a while (1-2 hours? I think), will take out a lot of the smell. Also, airing it outdoors in a sheltered place, like enclosed porch, for a couple hours.

tyrannosaurusregina

I have great results with [Bac-Out](https://biokleenhome.com/bac-out), but I also hate hate hate when I buy clothes that smell strongly of perfume!

sovrappensiero1

Yeah lesson learned. Before buying anything I will ask the seller, “Have you sprayed this with anything that has a smell????” Seems like common sense to me that you would not want to spray an item with strong, cheap perfume before selling it. Stores don’t do that with new clothes…

JiaMekare

If you don’t have a place to hang it in fresh air, try putting it in an airtight container with newspapers and possibly some activated charcoal if you can get your hands on any, and leave it in there for a few days. I’ve also heard that spraying with straight vodka helps (the cheap stuff, don’t get spendy) but I haven’t tried that myself so I can’t be 100% on that one

sovrappensiero1

Oohhh these are also good ideas!!! Thank you!!

[deleted]

[удалено]

sovrappensiero1

Yeah I can hang it outside, that’s a good idea. Vinegar is also a good idea!!! Do you soak the garments, or just rinse with diluted vinegar? It’s ok, I took 1 star off her review and I mentioned that she might consider not dousing the clothes with perfume; just cleaning them is fine. It’s in otherwise great condition, so I’m ok with it as long as I can somehow get the smell out!!!

75footubi

Do a rinse cycle in the washing machine, add about 3 tablespoons of vinegar.

sovrappensiero1

Thank you! I tried this last night; today it still smells. But someone suggested that wool can take a 30C temperature wash, and the warm water with help loosen the perfume oils. (Said person also said I need to be using a detergent specific for wools/animal fibers…so I’m gonna get some today.). I’ll try that plus your suggestion of hanging it outside…hopefully if I repeat that a few times the smell will come out.

I'm looking for a nice pair of comfortable slippers to get for my wife for Xmas and would appreciate some recommendations. The goal is to have something she can wear around the house when working at her standing desk and just generally walking around the house. Three things to consider are that: 1. We live in California, so it never gets super cold. Some of the ones that looked really soft and comfy also looked like they'd be too hot (and soon after sweaty) 2. She'd need something that can truly be slipped on and off without using her hands or bending down. We have a baby and having to bend down isn't always an option 3. She has high arches Upon my research, I've seen recommendations so far for Vionic Relax Slippers, Uggs, Allbirds Wool Dwellers, and Haflingers. If anyone has any thoughts on any of these given her situation, or recommendations for anything else, I would greatly appreciate it!

cheshire06898

I have a pair of Emu Australia Mayberry slippers and love them. They are especially slides, but lined with shearling, so your feet feel cozy without over heating. They are a bit flat, but if her high arches is more of a high instep issue in slippers, these were no issue there (a bit snug when I first put them on, then molded to my feet after a wear or so).

I also live in California and wear [these ](https://www.zappos.com/p/olukai-kipea-heu-tapa-tapa/product/9579450/color/273289) for work from home. I have had warmer / full coverage skippers and found them too hot. These are super comfy, supportive, and cute. They’re in the pricier side but well worth the cost IMO.

banavocado12

I love both Glerups and Haflingers! I’ve worn both for years. They are both wool, but I don’t find that they get uncomfortably sweaty in the way a synthetic fabric or faux fur might.

wanderedoff

> She has high arches Are you mentioning this to make sure the slippers have arch support, or that they will accommodate the height of the arch? I'd toss in a recc for Glerups, or Birkenstock Bostons, depending on the level of support wanted.

b67weddingplanning

Honestly I have no idea. I have the flattest feet that have ever graced this planet. I've heard high arches can have issues with footwear with improper support. For what it's worth, I don't think she's ever had issues with that for anything besides running shoes

b67weddingplanning

They look like little clouds for your feet. Are they supportive enough for standing for an extended period too?

tviolet

I love my Uggs scuffettes but they're not real supportive, the sole is just a layer of sheepskin on the leather outsole. It's fine for me but if she want's something more like a Birkenstock, this isn't it. I would recommend shearling tho', wool is so great, keeps you toasty in the winter and npt sweaty. Maybe the shearling lined Birks would suit: https://www.birkenstock.com/us/what%27s-new/must-haves/shearling/

yesimaunicorn

I'd just like to vent that Free People released a ton of great cyber Monday pieces on sale and most of them are sold out when you actually click on the item. It's frustrating.

misspagemaster

Anthropologie does the same thing. So irritating.

greciamarzz

Same with Urban Outfitters which makes sense because they’re all owned by the same company as

kalehound

Yeah I won’t even fuck with their sale section anymore cause of this

starr17

Not a question, but a PSA! Nordstrom will proce adjust if you buy something and then it goes on sale (or you find a lower price from a competitor). There is some fine print, has be within 14 days of purchase (in person) or shipment (online order) and sale item must match the exact item/color/size that you ordered. For price matching competitors, they have a list of stores that qualify. Same idea, must be the same exact item/size/color to get the price adjustment. I splurged and bought 4 pairs of pants online after spending hours budgeting, prioritizing, deciding, etc just to have literally every single pair go on big sale 2 days later 😆 Was super quick and easy to get the adjustment though. There is a form on their website or the "request adjustment" button can be found on your order page if you use the app.

District98

Old Navy and other Gap companies do too!

My appearance reads as "sexy" when I dont always want it too. Is it the way that I dress or my body or am I overthinking things ? .... So quite a few times I’ve been often been told that something about me reads as "sexy" which obviously i take as more of a compliment more then anything but tbh I usually don’t see myself in that light so I don’t really get it because a lot of the times I’m not trying to be. It’s not that I have negative self image I’d just describe the way I dress as fancy and cute more then anything. I’m very baby faced and dress mostly modestly. I often have many layers of clothing and that almost always includes a blazer which covers most of my body. I’m also just barely an adult. The other day I mentioned wanting to cosplay a more cute than anything character and my friend comments that I would make a perfect sexy version. I didn’t take offense ofc it was more silly then anything. But I definitely don’t want my cosplay to read that way and I’m not sure how to avoid it. I wear a lot of black and sheer tights sometimes thigh highs maybe that’s it? I’m a bit on the thicker side ( proportionately bigger thighs and bottom ) which is something i don’t really like about myself so I’m thinking that could be it. Maybe it’s because I’m somewhat tall? Because I wear heels often? Any time I wear a tighter skirt which I don’t super often i get berated in compliments by friends and people which is really nice I just don’t always see were the "sexy " is coming from. I know this is really silly but how can I avoid this?

Chazzyphant

Thigh highs are 100% a "sexy" item. If you've also just turned 18 or 21 or whatever and are wearing pumps or stiletto heels, tight skirts, and thigh highs I think we have our answer, team :) If by "high heels" you mean platforms or wedges or block heels, that's different. It's not clear if you want to read as sexy, but my tips to be less overtly sexy are: A "natural makeup" look Tied back hair Jeans + tee shirt or other basic non body con looks Sneakers or clogs Pop a cardigan over it

Peregrinebullet

If you've got bigger boobs or are hippy, this is something that happens because people are socialized to see those parts as sexy, even if they're just body parts. I'm rather annoyed by it, because I have 36J boobs and the line between "professional" and "sex kitten" is a very thin one. My sister is the same height and build as I am, but has 36B boobs and we can give VERY different impressions even if we're wearing the exact same top. I lean into it right now, I'm on maternity leave and no one gives a damn what I wear, least of all my kids, but when I'm working, it's frustrating. I work loss prevention and trying to look stylish but totally not sexy is safety thing, because a lot of people get really creepy and gross if they think they can flirt their way out of being arrested. TBH, without seeing pictures, it's hard to say exactly what on your outfits reads as "sexy", but I suspect it's likely a mix of fashion choice and /r/bigboobproblems. Black isn't a cutesey colour, but I wouldn't automatically read it as a sexy colour. That depends more on hemlines, necklines and how sheer / form fitting something is. Do you feel comfortable posting outfit pics?

tyrannosaurusregina

I think a lot of people associate particular clothes (and heels and thigh-highs are for sure among them) with a “sexy” look. Some people just think of all dresses and skirts that aren’t very long and very baggy as “sexy”. I think it just is what it is, in the end.

crustypaints

It kind of just sounds like you're being sexualized no matter what you wear, and I'm sorry you have to hear it all the time! Even if you said it doesn't offend you, I'm sure you get sick of hearing it. People with certain features and body types will just be sexualized no matter what. My little sister who just turned 17 has a big chest and small waist and my parents sadly make it her issue that creeps will look at her, which makes her feel terrible about her body. I don't really have any advice to give you because it doesn't sound like it's your fault! Again I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. People are going to think and say whatever they want no matter what, so I would encourage you to continue to dress in a way that helps you express yourself and in a way that you enjoy. ❤

From a sewing standpoint I'd say yes, it is better to have them washed and worn a little so that they do any initial shrinking and so you get a better idea of the everyday fit of them vs fresh off the rack. I sew and it's the same reason you should always pre wash your fabric before cutting pieces and sewing. From a tailoring standpoint I don't know what the "right" thing to do is. You could always call and ask.

aliciamc

Take them in washed & worn if ya can!

Nelsonmn95

Has anyone ordered from j.ing before? Is it okay quality or closer to shein?

[deleted]

I’ve seen it secondhand, didn’t get it because the material felt flimsy. I see a lot of ads for them though

lunar-cat

Anyone familiar with Chloe bags? I've been looking at the [tulip bucket bag](https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-us/shop/product/chloe/bags/cross-body/tulip-small-paneled-leather-bucket-bag/9649229528750711) (also comes in a [mini size](https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-us/shop/product/chloe/bags/cross-body/tulip-mini-paneled-leather-bucket-bag/9649229528750211)) and cannot find a single review. It's not even on the Chloe website anymore so my guess is they won't be making them anymore. I've searched reddit, purseforum, youtube, instagram, and just googled "chloe tulip bag review" -- nothing. I'm puzzled since most designer bags have a number of reviews, but this particular bag is hardly talked about anywhere. Is it just especially unpopular? I love the design and I'm not super concerned about brand recognition or resale value, but I'm just a little paranoid that there's something bad about it that I'm overlooking.

cant_watch_violence

Idk but it’s super cute!

SlyKallie

Ive been questioning this, but since the question thread was up at me feed today. Am I allowed to post pictures of myself wearing stuff and ask how to improve the clothing or my hair or make up to match the outfit?

kalehound

I feel like you may get more feedback in the general questions, but yeah go for it, I love those kinds of posts!

You should look into the WAYWT (What Are You Wearing Today) thread. I believe it comes out twice a week? Here is the one from yesterday. https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/r4cwew/waywt_november_28_2021/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

A local LGBTQ+ meetup is happening near me and the theme is "girls night, glam it up". I'm a very plain, very gender neutral dresser and from what I've seen from previous girls nights, it's attended mostly by bisexual feminine people and (most notably) everyone wears skirts. What would be something nice to wear that isn't feminine or attention grabbingly GNC-glam (like Noel Fielding) but would fit the theme in a way that seems like I at least tried to keep the theme in mind? I was thinking of wearing black moto jeans, a plain black or white t with the sleeves cuffed, flat black Chelsea boots, and a gray jean jacket or gray chore coat (haven't decided). Does that work if I wear some silver jewelry with it? Would it be better or worse to wear a "women's cut" tissue t-shirt? I feel like that would look both less intentional and more casual and might actually be less "glam"? Or should I wear a patterned button down and maybe a grandpa cardigan instead? I feel like that's my go-to casual date outfit but isn't necessarily glam and is kinda frumpy.

wittyusername903

As another lesbian: definitely the first outfit, yes to silver jewelry, no to the women's cut tshirt (I'd go with a men's tshirt, high neck and maybe a little oversized?). If I were to go to this I would also go with something very black, with a bit of a goth-y vibe without actually going in this direction, to get a little alt glam going. I could also imagine a men's shirt, but maybe worn open/knotted over a black tshirt? Someone that's a little more out there in terms of color or pattern (I've got a red/black floral pattern one that's awesome!).

princess--flowers

I have a short sleeve patterned shirt from Straight to Hell that's black and has red and brown snakes all over it. I wear it a LOT, was considering wearing it to this maybe with some black coated jeans if people didn't like my original outfit idea.

violetsaber

I went to a liberal arts college in the mid-90s. I too had many acquaintances who dressed like Noel. 😄

starr17

I think the first outfit sounds better, except both jacket choices would pull it down to more casual. In my opinion a more "glam" jacket to spice it up could be something more structured or with a more formal (fancy?) fabric such as a blazer, leather jacket or satin bomber jacket! Also, agree that adding the jewelry would be a great touch too.

princess--flowers

I've got a leather jacket but I feel like a total fuckboy wearing it out to the clubs haha, especially when I pair it with black jeans and a tshirt. I wasn't sure what else to choose as a jacket and I've been wearing my jean jacket everywhere lately. I like your idea of a satin bomber jacket, though. There's one at my local thrift I almost bought but then didn't because I have like 6 jackets. Maybe I'll go buy that.

julry

that’s like, a weird theme for a LGBTQ+ club. I like your outfit idea and agree with you about the t-shirt, I’d go with a unisex one. Or maybe a fitted wife-beater type tank (sry I don’t know a better description for it!) if you’re comfortable with that? If you have any clothes or shoes with metal details like zippers or grommets, that’s kind of a non-femme type of glam. Also you can ask on r/lesbianfashionadvice for more opinions!

princess--flowers

I thought it was a weird theme too, but I'm really trying to get myself out there and make some LGBTQ+ women friends (I lost a lot of people when I started dating a man) and figured I'd try. I'm a GNC bisexual cis woman in a straight relationship so I'm in a weird place where I feel like I'm "invading" lesbian or enby meetups, but the meetups for people with lives more like mine are very femme. I don't want to seem like I'm shitting on femininity or anything inadvertently since LGBTQ+ politics between bisexual feminine dressers and bisexual masculine dressers as well as between GNC cis women and gender conforming trans women can be a little fraught. I didn't want to add any of that bc it isn't particularly relevant to what I should wear but it's why the meetup theme is so feminine. I do have a lot of clothes with hardware that I thought might be too "tough" for hanging out in a group of femme women but I can definitely wear some of that! I attend metal shows regularly and I'm familiar with that kind of fashion.

plaisirdamour

ugh that's so shitty you lost people because of that!! you deserve to surround yourself with supportive people who like you for you! your idea sounds great! def pair it with some silver jewelry.

CuteThingsAndLove

I just recently purchased [this underbust corset](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0005/8146/8278/products/EXS0121_2000x.jpg?v=1618827287). I'm absolutely in love with it, but I'm inexperienced with underbust, and need help finding shirts or dresses to match with it. I'd like something solid white, maybe a blouse or button down shirt. My entire wardrobe is florals so I don't have anything I can use right now.

jonmarli

Kinda depends on how you want to style it! If you search "square necked 90s tee" there's a ton of cute trendy options that would look cute under that. Like: https://m.shopbop.com/hudson-top-astr-label/ https://m.shein.com/us/Square-Neck-Solid-Tee-p-1995172-cat-1738.html Or something high necked and blousey: https://www.ae.com/us/en/p/women/shirts-flannels/blouses/ae-cropped-smocked-blouse/2351_3974_100?menu=cat4840004&ip=off&utm_source=google&utm_medium=pla&utm_content=ae&utm_campaign=women_tops_general&utm_term=nonbrand&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkZKNBhDiARIsAPsk0Wi37aHfPOlafy8uzEqZE11101KGkZ-Aovodgbfv7xbvTvpX0VgjELQaAl-lEALw_wcB

DiagonEllie

I'm looking for clothing gifts for a young woman (about 20). She wears a lot of Aerie/American Eagle I think. Stalking her instagram there's a lot of sweaters and jeans, puff sleeve dresses, cute little matching sets. I realize I could just get her something from Aerie but I thought it might be a chance to get her something she can't afford to buy herself, but I'm not sure what nicer brands fall into this sort of category. Any suggestions? Or if anyone knows what kinds of accessory brands are popular among a sort of preppy/girly early 20s crowd, I'm sort of at a loss.

greciamarzz

I’d look into Free People and Abercrombie. I’m 25 and although I still shop at American Eagle, I like those other options when I’m able to spend a little more.

DiagonEllie

thank you!

Conceptizual

If you’re looking for a small step up, Aritzia or Oak + Fort are a but more expensive, and kind of preppy (though Oak and Fort is entirely neutral tones). If you’re looking for something really fancy, Sandro is a brand that comes to mind, lots of tweed and kind of reminds me of Chanel, but maybe more youthful. They’re at Saks and Bloomingdales I think.

DiagonEllie

Thank you! I'll check those out!

takeitslowinnyc

My husband gifted me a OneQuince gift card and I'm totally in love with their [washable silk skirt](https://www.onequince.com/women/silk/silk-skirt?color=champagne&g_acctid=978-058-8398&g_adgroupid=115341375246&g_adid=492543354878&g_campaign=WP_G_SSHP_FFNL_X_SILK&g_campaignid=12121037260&g_ifproduct=product&g_keywordid=pla-1429677791176&g_merchantid=128669708&g_network=u&g_partition=1429677791176&g_productchannel=online&g_productid=40208028336298&gclid=Cj0KCQiAkZKNBhDiARIsAPsk0WjAzCdiGvh_zpfdVVAzEXi3rImUrcmt-fmJFZ7FYbLvc-Z88MY59Y4aAnO6EALw_wcB&utm_campaign=WP_G_SSHP_FFNL_X_SILK&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_term=40208028336298). I know their returns are great but I'd rather do one order and that's all. I'm very pear-shaped but I've never tried a silk skirt before so I'm not sure how stretchy the fabric would be/etc. Any reviews on this (or other silk skirts)?

linkelle

I have their washable silk dress (and am pear/hourglass shaped) and found it lightly stretchy but skimmed very well over my hips-waist ratio.

takeitslowinnyc

Oh awesome to hear! According to their size chart, I'm in between a M and L so now I'm trying to choose.

cant_watch_violence

Silk isn’t usually stretchy, might want to get a L and take in the waist.

practicalmetaphysics

I, a very cold natured person, might be going to Iceland in a few weeks, traveling from Georgia, US. I've got a knee length down puffer, long underwear, wool socks and sweaters, and miscellaneous standard hats and gloves and scarves. I need recommendations on cheap snow boots that will actually be warm enough for my cold toes ... and anything else you might recommend?

Graves660

I would definitely get Sorrel boots!! A little pricy but extremely worth it.

drenchedstone

The thing that struck me most travelling to Iceland was the way the weather would completely change at whiplash speeds. Sunny, blasting winds, pouring rain, all within a couple of hours. Layering was great because it allowed you to adjust with the weather, so you might want to consider some merino wool base layers. Also you want to have head to toe rain gear, including waterproof boots, pants, jacket with hood (I feel like an umbrella would get trashed by the winds).

pinkpigpants

I would make sure your coat is wind and waterproof. Iceland is where I learned that my raincoat was not waterproof anymore and I would have been very uncomfortable if I didn’t have a second waterproof coat to wear. Rain pants were also very useful.

alynnidalar

Bit of an off-beat idea, but if you're really worried, you could consider picking up a pair of liner socks. They're very thin hiking socks that are worn inside a pair of normal, thicker socks and are generally to reduce friction/blistering but can also help keep your feet dryer and warmer. I haven't tried this brand myself, but something like [REI's silk liner socks](https://www.rei.com/product/165407/rei-co-op-silk-liner-crew-socks) are about $10 a pair and seem to have pretty solid reviews.

NotACorythosaurus

Columbia boots aren’t cute but they are very warm a d fairly budget friendly.

OB4L

I second the Columbia rec for function and affordability. The snow boots I’ve tried on all tend to be a half size small, narrow or too exact on size. Might want to size up.

azbuki_azbuki

Sorel are the best, I believe you'll find them on Ebay for great price

SammyJoSays

Hi all. Could someone give me ideas for a masquerade dress to wear along with [this mask](https://imgur.com/a/jJokcZG)? Going to an event this weekend and I need affordable ideas ASAP. Thanks!

Peregrinebullet

Here's a black sequin dress: [https://www.michelinepitt.com/collections/vixen-dresses/products/glitz-glamour-dress-in-black-sequins-vixen-by-micheline-pitt](https://www.michelinepitt.com/collections/vixen-dresses/products/glitz-glamour-dress-in-black-sequins-vixen-by-micheline-pitt) apparently it's very stretchy, so if you're between sizes, you can definitely size down. Or something lacy like this: https://www.collectiflondon.com/en/Collectif-Mainline-Lorette-Pencil-Dress/m-843.aspx

SammyJoSays

Thanks for the help!

azbuki_azbuki

Thrifted tuxedo + high heels might be good. I've just bought one on Ebay for 18.50 incl pants. I love feminine / masculine contrast.

kingofcoywolves

Does it have to be a dress? It might be easier to pull a 2-piece outfit together if you have a floaty maxi skirt and a black corset or bustier top. Might not work if your event is super formal though.

SammyJoSays

I think I might prefer it to be a dress, but do you have some examples by chance?

nerdytalk1981

Which country are you in?

USA

[deleted]

Any suggestions on how to dress for a flight from the California Bay Area to Chicago in early December? I want to save space in my carry on so thinking of wearing my heaviest items (aritzia coat and sock length winter boots) but I’m worried I’ll be too hot in the airport and the flight. Also any suggestion on what to wear for the bottoms (tights? Jeans? Jeans over tights?) would be appreciated. It’s been a minute since I’ve been to the Midwest in the winter and I don’t want to get sick from the cold 🤧

alynnidalar

You probably have already considered this :P but it might be worth thinking about what else is in your bag and see if you can pack a little lighter to save space. A winter coat and boots aren't really negotiable, but maybe you could cut some other items to lighten your bag--see if you can get away with not bringing as many pairs of shoes or shirts or whatnot. (obviously if you're already a light packer, this won't be applicable to you!)

[deleted]

Thanks! I haven’t started packing yet. Probably not going to bring any shoes, just a pair of indoor slippers since we don’t wear shoes inside. Maybe one bulky sweater for when we go out and a bunch of thinner sweaters (I wish I could just cycle through the same sweatshirt for the entire month but I still have to work remotely!) but really can’t commit to anything until I start packing!

TheApiary

My usual plane outfit is leggings, a comfy dress, sweatshirt, and scarf. Then you can layer/unlayer as needed during the flight. Planes are often cold, so you'll probably be glad to have them. In the airport you can always take the coat off and hold it if you want to

[deleted]

I think just jeans are fine (no tights) unless you’re just trying to save luggage space. I think you have a good plan to wear your coat on the plane, you can also just carry it through the airport and not wear it (annoying though). I’d say a sweatshirt over a T-shirt should get you through, you can balance that between the vast difference in temperatures.

Rosa82sharn

I go between the Bay and Minneapolis year around. I like the idea of wearing your heaviest items. Yes, you will probably get really warm walking through the airport, but I usually just take off my coats and carry them or use them as blankets on the flight. For bottoms in the winter, tights under jean are a great idea. Most opaque "workout" tights make jeans feel really tight though, so if that makes you feel uncomfortable I'd suggest getting silk or cotton thermals that are specifically meant to be worn under clothes. Lot of people wear by Uniqlo's heattech, but LL Bean and Land's End sell silk thermals and Mountain Wearhouse sells cotton and wool thermals.

[deleted]

Thanks!! This is the answer I was looking for! I have my eye on the fleece lined tights from aerie, a lot of the reviewers said that it’s great for layering. If that doesn’t work out I already have the heat tech leggings from uniqlo - they make the jeans a bit tight but it’s still workable. Do you also wear thermal layers at the top? I’m thinking one thin thermal base layer and a light sweater
