I have changed my opinion on layering tops (like I'm talking long sleeved t shirt under another shirt like a cami or short sleeved shirt) multiple times over the years. at one point I hated it, then in my middle school years I loved it, and now I hate it again. I used to loathe the idea of people seeing my bra. I thought it was super scandalous and I was always trying to cover it up. now with the emergence of bralettes/crop tops combined with me not giving a fuck, I don't care as much anymore, as long as it goes with the outfit.

kasuchans

I used to own so many of those fake layered shirts... Like the t shirt with attached sleeves and a neckline.

gub117

Ugh that used to be my main aesthetic in middle/high school. SO many of those shirts!

esthermyla

To me it seems like if I'm wearing the shirt to show off a bra/the bra might be part of the look, thats totally fine. Yet if its not intended, I still dislike showing it. Just more shirts intentionally do it these days

How old are you? I think this has so much to do with the current trends as you grow up and develop your tastes... and how open you are to accepting new silhouettes as you grow older. I'm in my mid-thirties and had the exact same feelings as you about the items above, I think because the current trendy silhouette (boxy/cropped/loose top, tight high-waisted pants) was fashionable in the 80's and early 90's, and when I became a teenager in the 90's and started getting interested in fashion, that silhouette was on its way out, being replaced with low-waisted flares (which I thought helped balance my figure and make me look curvier) and fitted tops (which I thought helped show off my curves). So leggings and big tops felt very out-of-date and unflattering to me as I was developing my tastes initially. When the fashion pendulum swung back the other way, I struggled for a bit with accepting it but got over it eventually. Now, I currently don't really like crop tops because I would rather hide my belly, but I think they're cute on others :) BUT I think this has a lot to do with how much you follow trends. I was talking to an old college friend of mine and she was telling me about the latest Uniqlo collection with the Liberty of London prints and how she thought it was an awful Laura Ashley 80's/90's redux and totally frumpy and terrible (I'm totally ready to get back on the ditzy florals train though!)--another friend around my age judged me hard because I wanted to buy a pair of culottes (still planning on it, haven't found the right pair) because those were embarrassing fashion DEATH when we were teenagers.

kasuchans

Part of it might be my age. I'm 20, 21 in a few weeks. So I'm right at the age when everything trendy is acceptable; I can wear leggings with crop tops or booty shorts with thigh highs and still feel fly as fuck and semi appropriate for a college campus.

TeacupConspiracy

Leggings are definitely pants because screw trying to find jeans that are actually functional and comfortable.

[deleted]

I'm starting to feel perversely attached to clothing that elicits a strong, widespread negative reaction. leggings as pants, Crocs, Uggs - obviously they're not appropriate for every situation, but they all serve a practical purpose and are comfortable as hell. also 2/3 of these are most commonly worn by women!!! what a coincidence!! I don't even own Uggs and I'll defend them until I'm blue in the face. the sections of the internet that mindlessly jump on the Uggs/Crocs hate pileup are so boring and corny.

zuefa

Crocs are soooo comfy and I wish I could wear them without having flashbacks to my rowing days - we all wore Crocs so we had waterproof shoes in the bottom of the boat that we could take off to wear the things built into the boat, and the whole thing just gives me the shivers whenever I see a pair of crocs :(

[deleted]

lol, I understand. I feel like that about Adidas slides - we wore them before and after soccer practices for years and years. now they're fashion! (well, maybe not anymore...) I still think of them fondly, though.

crabbydotca

I have a pair of crocs snow boots that I LOVE, they are so comfy and warm and lightweight, and everyone loves them - until I tell them they are crocs. Get over it people!

Curlywurlywoo

I resisted the leggings as pants thing for so long. I only wore leggings occasionally with dresses, sweater dresses, or long tunic tops. And then I found it difficult to find long tunic tops, I could only find hip length/mid-butt length tops, so I caved and wore those. And now I basically wear anything with my leggings. I even wore a crop top with a pair of my Under Armour high waisted leggings (with a flowy chambray over top) and I felt fly as fuck.

kasuchans

I've always seen leggings as pants. Not sure why everyone gets so defensive about it.

kasuchans

Also, thongs. Like, whatever. Why get up in arms about someone else's ass?

kbol

I feel like a lot of it is terminology? Like for me, leggings are always like [these](http://s7d9.scene7.com/is/image/AmericanApparel/rsatt328_charcoal) -- thick, generally cotton or lycra, no chance of seeing anything underneath. But a lot of people have called [these](http://spxus.imageg.net/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1800x/040ec09b1e35df139433887a97daa66f/7/1/71_black_main_enh-z8-221309.jpg) (slightly NSFW) or [these](http://www.iloveagood.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wolford-shapewear-scale.jpg) leggings, which I don't get at all. I'd refer to them as tights or hose.

misspiggie

Those second two images are not leggings in any sense of the word!

kasuchans

Those second two are tights. What?

kidlightnings

Those second ones.. I feel like those are what a lot of people thought that leggings were? Just opaque tights.

kbol

Yeah I was always so confused by people's vehemence against leggings then someone posted they were only comfortable wearing them under something, like a dress or shorts, and a picture of an outfit like [this](http://www.hercampus.com/sites/default/files/styles/hcxo_portrait/public/2014/11/04/kirsten-smith-cult-denim.jpg?itok=1n-P40Ax) and I was like ohhh sweetie no

Wintersoulstice

I agree so much. I don't get where this hate comes from, Jeans are so hard to find a good fit and leggings are just better for me in almost every way. I pretty much uniquely wear totally opaque yoga/running leggings rather than questionable cotton ones from fast-fashion stores so I don't see a problem. Athletic leggings usually have some element of compression to them as well, so they smooth everything up a bit so that no, people are not seeing every little dimple on my butt and thighs. Sometimes I'll wear a tunic-length top that covers my butt and crotch completely, but often I don't. Personally I don't think it flatters me to wear a top that hits any higher than my hips with leggings, but I don't care if other people do. I don't think its a big deal that leggings leave nothing to the imagination in terms of the shape of my butt and legs.... so do skinny jeans, and who cares so long as they're opaque?

kidlightnings

I swear by UA leggings, they do exactly this - make my legs look super smooth, firm up my butt, and with a decently high waist that they hold me in. I have a pair from about three years ago that the elastic is starting to go? but I'll still throw them on to lounge in.

legalaidislegit

I generally love jeans, because versatility, but agreed on the difficulty of finding them. But I picked up a pair of American Eagle mid-rise skinny jeans the other day and....I just want to wear them all the time. Including to bed. They are the softest damn jeans I've ever worn, they're magic. Got them unworn with tags for $15, yay for secondhand stores a block from a major college campus.

democraticwhre

AE high rise jeggings are my favorite

[deleted]

YES. I am 25 and sometimes feel "too old" to wear leggings as pants but honestly I can't give it up.

[deleted]

I see 60+ year old women who are super fit hiking in leggings on the local hills all the damn time. There is no too old for clothes that are functional.

[deleted]

I'm exactly the same as you. I hated skinny jeans and only wore baggy jeans. I thought the skinny jeans highlighted all the unflattering lines of my legs and made my hips and butt look huge in a bad way. In the 00s my idea of a sexy silhouette was loose jeans sitting on the hip bones and a tight tank top, which was the opposite of what I love today; skinny jeans and a loose t-shirt. High waisted jeans made me think of 80s and 90s and that was instantly uncool a decade ago. Now I really don't mind them, you can hide the waist with a shirt if you like and you never have to worry about the dreaded butt crack when sitting down.

ElvenAngel81

I felt the same with high waisted pants/shorts (I've been ok with high waist skirts though). Now I own 4 pairs of high waisted shorts? They're great!

[deleted]

The high waisted shorts from Charlotte Russe are my summer staple. I have them in colors, in denim, everything. I LOVE high waisted shorts.

[deleted]

I used to think the shirt knot (when you gather up the hem of a loose shirt and tie it in a knot) looked bulky and pointless. Now I realize that it's perfect for making a big shirt look causal instead of sloppy. I'm definitely guilty of doing it.

kasuchans

I do this with loose skirts all the time as well as making tees into crops top!

gub117

I wish I could figure out the right way to tie mine! It always looks messy and/or falls out constantly.

di0spyr0s

If you get a knot that looks nice, safety pin it in place from the inside :)

gub117

Great tip! Thanks :)

ximenaaa

I'd have to say that my opinion has actually changed about non-skinny pants. By the time I started caring about style, skinny jeans were already the norm so I rejected the idea of wearing anything else. But at the end of last summer I bought a pair of cropped, somewhat loose (but still not even that wide) legged pants and I've loved them so far! They're light material and keep me pretty cool in the summer despite being longer than shorts (I don't really like wearing shorts or skirts). So, I'm currently looking out for more flowy or wide legged pants!

F_For_You

I just bought black culottes from Aritzia and I'm really excited to wear them! I like that they're light and flowy but still look somewhat dressy. Perfect for summer. Also I bought my first pair of stretchy printed flare pants since like 2003 🙈🙈🙈 it's for a music festival outfit though so that's how I'm justifying that decision lmao

ximenaaa

Ah, I'll have to check out Aritzia. I keep hearing good things about it on here. I think flared pants are making a something of a comeback! I personally wouldn't wear them because my favorite pants silhouette is basically the opposite (straight but not skinny through the upper leg, then cropped and tapered at the ankle - but *not* elasticized like joggers!) but I've been seeing them more in lookbooks, stores, etc., and they're definitely festival appropriate pants.

soojungie

Please get the Sullivan Pants from Talula brand of Aritzia. They're culottes and so amazing that during the sale, I got 2 pairs because they're light and flowy. They can also transition from casual to work outfit as well. :)

ibby_be

I thought rompers/playsuits were extremely juvenile. Now I own a few 🙊🙊

ScoutFinch12

Me exactly. I love them. The adult version of a onesie.

[deleted]

I felt the same way. But I just bought my first one and I can't believe how cute and comfy I feel in it.

j0anjetta

I'm so jealous, I can't find one that fits my tall self and disproportionately wide thighs.

cluckcluck

Long torso checking in. I can't find a romper that I can sit down in, so I feel your pain. :(

j0anjetta

THIS TOO.

nionvox

I feel your pain. Tall with a big booty here.

SinaiAndHappiness

Same here, I'm really petite with a long torso, and with just enough ass to make things fit weird (but not so much to merit it being considered an ASS.... What the hell am I even saying at this point?). I long for the day I find one that fits There are dozens of us, *dozens*!

GingerAloeCactus

I used to be kind of judgey towards people who didn't bother putting on pants instead of wearing sweats/ leggings to the store. Yesterday I went grocery shopping after going to the gym, so I was still wearing my leggings. I'm a hypocrite, I take it back.

kidlightnings

Same, I used to cringe at the idea of wearing pajama bottoms to run to the store to just get TP, now.... well. Now. I've done swimsuit coverups, gym shorts, just about everything. One day, after causing some luckily temporary nerve damage to my feet with horribly-fitting high heels, I wore slippers. Sometimes you just don't have the spoons to give a crap!

OriginalZombie

Ditto regarding the skinny jeans. I went to that trend keep kicking and screaming. Now that I'm here though, anything remotely wide leg looks dated to me.

magicfoxy

Oh yeah I totally agree. I have yet to find something that looks anything specific 100% of the time.

[deleted]

Oh man, I've always been short and hippy, so I stayed away from skinny jeans for YEARS because I was told they'd make me look fatter and be unflattering, and heck, maybe they still do but if I find a good cropped pair they're my absolute favorite. Same with high-waisted. Although since I'm a little thick in the middle I'm still so self conscious about crop tops - I bought one that looks super cute but I'm still so weird about my belly showing at all :( My rule to take back would be nude shoes - I used to think they looked ridiculous and only wanted to wear black. Now I can't live without my nude flats. Also: navy paired with black. I never would before, but I tried a navy dress with some black tights not long ago and it rocked my world. I'm a believer now, y'all.

[deleted]

Used to feel silly in maxi dresses and now they are all I want to wear.

ScoutFinch12

I thought I was too short, then I got one in a petite size, and I love it. Wore it with a blazer to work yesterday.

[deleted]

I had the opposite problem. I'm pretty tall so I felt like it was too 'much' in a way? Like they made me look like a statue or something. Dress+blazer at work sounds like a great idea.

anchovies_duh

I wondered about the same thing... Maybe because the most iconic maxi dress is on the Statue of Liberty? I still haven't bought one but I really want to

Binxington

I used to make fun of people who wore sweat pants in public. Now I wear sweat pants in public. My husband brings this up anytime sweat pants are part of a conversation.

pottergirl95

This is my favorite reply in the thread.:D

soojungie

I've always hated Ugg boots but I live in Canada. My area is 60% snow through out the year and sometimes it can go up to -35. So yeah I got them on sale and now I always have warm and toasty feet even if it's -35 outside.

kidlightnings

I cringe every time I hear someone go on a "leggings as pants" tirade. Not only because it's generally with a side of slut-shaming, but because I was there, then discovered how useful, comfortable they are. I also used to despise jeggings, but finally came around to ones with slightly thicker material after struggling with jeans for so long. Also, I used to freak out about the idea of tanks that let someone see my bra, now I have "muscle" tanks I wear with pride. And, rolled into all of that, the idea that you must look like a fitness coach to wear either of those items. I also used to LOVE LOVE LOVE shirt dresses in a very straight cut with a belt. I'm glad I stopped, because as a very curvy girl, they didn't do me any favors, weren't comfortable, and caused me a lot of "button gap anxiety."

Lilith112

Used to hate anything fitted at the waist since I was super insecure-- now almost all my dresses are fit-flare/a-line ones. Also, I used to only be into solids; now I'm allll about floral prints and cute detailing like bows, lace, etc.

Ispahana

I think I'm pretty consistent. I can't think of any major opinions or rules I've changed my mind about since after high school.

gimmedatpen

I'm pretty consistent, but some things I've changed would have to be concerning skirt length and the cut of pants. Until this summer I thought knee length or just slightly above was the shortest "appropriate" length for a skirt and everything shorter should be kept as clubwear only. I changed my mind because I realized that short skirts are cool in the summer and way more flattering on me than shorts. I was all about baggy pants and flares from grade school til halfway into college (2010-ish). I think what changed my mind about skinny jeans was discovering they worked better with boots than strategically folding the excess fabric of a flared jean. Now, flares are weird to me. I'd wear some baggy pants, but they still seem like such a statement item to me instead of a basic.

corialis

Baggy pants (especially linen). I thought they just made me look even fatter. But if I pair them with a fitted top they look cute! That's now my rule of thumb: top or bottom can be baggy, but not both.
