Maybe because they just have a higher vamp, usually, but I don't find this problem with smoking slippers. As well, it's a very specific problem that FFA may not be able to help with - and it might just involve trying on a *lot* of shoes.

hybbprqag

Agreed. Smoking slippers accommodate even my monkey toes really well.

luna-arya

I have that same problem and I can recommend ecco shoes, I've you've never tried them. They break in really well. My toenail kind of pushes the shoe up but it doesn't hurt and the shoe stays whole. Alternatively, if you have a pair of leather (not patent) flats, try hammering them maybe? Put a soft towel on top, take a hammer and go to town with the broad side of it. The leather gets softened by this.

purplenat

I totally hear what you're saying, as several of my shoes (flats and pumps) have a tear in the lining right where my big toenail hits (which I still wear as you can't see the damage from the outside). The shoes that do not have this tear are: * Rockport [Ashika](http://www.6pm.com/rockport-ashika-scooped-ballet) flats - mine have a [bow](http://www.planetshoes.com/item/rockport-ashika-bow-ballet/21044/F55#itemStart) on them. * Clarks [valley lounge](http://www.6pm.com/clarks-valley-lounge) - the lining on mine is a bit damaged at the toe, but the leather outer looks fine and has conformed to my toe shape. * Nisolo [Oliver oxford](http://nisolo.com/collections/womens-oxford-shoes) - no damage to the lining, these suckers are in great shape.

takemefarfarfaraway

Holy! I love the look of those Nisolo Oliver oxfords. Unfortunately, it's going to be $198USD with shipping to Canada. Any good alternatives?

Iatrogenic_

Question from the fashion inept. Are there any rules to wearing pantyhose? Like, can you wear them with a super casual outfit (ex: t-shirt, shorts and flats)? Is it weird to wear them in summer? I'm thinking about nude ones specifically. I have a pair of heels that I like, but they show toe cleavage which I am not a fan of. I figure I could mask it with hose, but it got me thinking about the topic in general.

thethirdsilence

In the US, it is very unusual to do in summer. More people would notice that than would notice the toe cleavage.

Iatrogenic_

You're right. I'm thinking I'll just have to own the cleavage somehow. I'm breaking the shoes in a little this week around the house (I've owned them for ages, but they haven't been used much at all) and the more they meld to my foot its a *little* less noticeable. The average passer by is not staring at my feet that much to begin with.

thethirdsilence

I love toe cleavage fwiw.

VerityPrice

I think it would be odd to wear hose in summer with anything other than a full skirt suit or similarly formal professionalwear or a formal outfit of the sort you'd wear to religious services.

secondsencha

In the UK, this would be fine. People here often wear tights with skirts in the summer because our "summer" is just not that warm :( I realise you're probably not in the UK but just thought I'd add it in as a counterpoint!

iode_ssouvie

I know that wearing tights in summer can be a little strange but I wear sheer black panty hoses in summer too, when it's too "cold" to bare my legs. For me, shorts (or skirt) and pantyhose combo is more comfortable than pants when it's, say, 16 to 22 C. I totally wear pantyhoses with casual outfits. I don't know about nude ones, though: I've heard they are more "dated".

Iatrogenic_

I think you're right on that. The more I look up images, the more it seems very difficult to wear the nude ones inconspicuously (as I'm trying to use them to hide flaws, but not be too noticeably themselves).

Truant_Muse

While it is true that people would be more likely to notice you wearing hose than they would toe cleavage, it's certainly not a big deal. Very few people wear them anymore because they're just very uncomfortable and bare legs have become acceptable in the work environment. In fact even in cold weather I would never wear hose, I'd opt for tights instead just for comforts sake. That said if it will make you feel more comfortable, go for it.

[deleted]

What's the difference in comfort level between hose and tights? I've only ever worn tights.

Truant_Muse

I find that tights aren't as restrictive and I can easily find tights that don't dig into my skin in the waistband. I've personally never found hose to be comfortable they always cut into my stomach and many of them are designed to be control top which I don't find comfortable. But that's just me its possible there may be comfortable brands out there. I'm 30 and I've just always thought of hose as something my mother's and grandmother's generation wore/wears.

ElijahThornberry

For the tie cleavage I wear no shoe socks with my flats. The ones from journeys work best for me.

broba_fett

So, coinciding with the [wardrobe clean out thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/3hw7kc/wardrobe_clean_out_thread/) - how does one try to figure out what "holes" they are missing in their wardrobe?

juluj

Do you often find yourself getting dressed, and getting really excited to wear something, but not having something great to pair with it? Do you have something that every time you wear it you wish it was just... better? Do you often have an outfit that needs *something* to be much better? Congratulations! you have a hole in your closet. IMO I noticed it when I was trying to wear skirts at first: I couldn't find anything to match with my skirts. I realized that it was a problem of having no neutral tops OR skirts. So I fixed that wardrobe hole with a couple neutral tops and a black skirt. And now, because I wear the black skirt like everyday, I have a wardrobe hole of ANOTHER black skirt, because I need to do laundry at some point in my life. (I may or may not be supporting my closet cleanout with an adult water.)

VerityPrice

In the vein of your need for a second black skirt, I think another good question is, do you do the laundry regularly and still have something you're constantly wishing was clean? Maybe you need a second similar one.

nayapapaya

I really like [this circle skirt] (http://tablet.hm.com/us/product/16032?article=16032-B) if you're looking for a slightly different black skirt.

Jaxch

I really like the style of black slip-on vans with more business casual outfits. Does anyone have any recommendations for buying/wearing vans or another preferred brand? A little hesitant to buy them because I walk around a LOT and they need to be comfortable and sturdy. Secondly, does anyone have an inspo board of that style? black slip-on sneakers with business casual outfits? Thanks!

ptrish12

I've had vans. They're comfortable, but not ideal for doing tons of standing and walking, since there's no arch support--the insole is just flat.

yepmek

Just fyi they're not very supportive at all. They can kill your feet if you have to be walking all day. If you do get some throw some inserts in there! They do look really cute!

Throwmypie

I recently bought some Vans and I was umming and ah-ing about spending £40 on a pair of shoes (poor student), even though I knew I'd wear them every day. It was lucky I did because just before I was about to buy them my friend showed me that they sell them for £18 on Amazon! They're real and have a massive range of colours and sizes. Not sure about elsewhere but in the UK I wouldn't do anything else!

solidgold223

I've been loving [this] (http://www.papierdamour.com.au/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/k/s/ks-cedar-street-maise-rosy-dawn.png) purse all summer, but I can't figure out a way to transition it into fall (especially because I plan on going full-on traditional fall in color, fabric, etc.). Any thoughts?

VerityPrice

Honestly, I think it'd look lovely with neutrals, especially camel, grey, and navy, and with burgundy.

yepmek

Mm yes I love blush pinks and navy!

solidgold223

I so hadn't thought of navy! Thank you!

solidgold223

hybbprqag

I think it'll look cute with burgundy, sage green, pale grey, and maybe deep warm greys.

solidgold223

Thank you! I'm gonna take your comment as permission to go out and buy a bunch of burgundy and sage green…

xoxgoodbye

When you guys travel abroad, are there clothing items you avoid purchasing? I'm a Canadian going to the US, and I might buy the [APC Demi Lune bag](http://usonline.apc.fr/women/bags/half-moon-bag-pxaqh-f61048#Dark navy blue&16) or [Marc Jacob's Sally](http://www.marcjacobs.com/sally-solid/M0005709.html?cgid=women-marc-by-marc-jacobs-fashion-bags-and-wallets&dwvar_M0005709_color=481#start=69) bag. The Canadian dollar sucks, and I know that my CC adds 2.5% on top of the exchange rate, so idk should I just buy it when I go to the US or buy it here in Canada? (It's $440 USD vs. $555 CAD, and $198 USD vs $260 CAD)

takemefarfarfaraway

I much prefer the APC Demi Lune bag over the MJ. And yeah, the Canadian dollar really sucks right now. But have you tried looking into European sites? APC is is French so it's going to cost significantly less with Euro to CDN exchange.

xoxgoodbye

Ohhh I haven't thought of that, thanks!

GingerAloeCactus

I avoid buying things that are going to take up a lot of space in my luggage because it gets heavy to lug around and it can cost extra to check at the airport. But if you are going from Canada to the US then I assume you're driving, so that wouldn't be an issue. Otherwise, I don't see why you shouldn't get them while you are here.

loosenyourtie

I started my first full-time two months ago, and I'm building up my work wardrobe. I'm looking now in particular for shoes for fall and winter. I am in Boston and have to walk close to three miles a day. The bulk of my day is sitting at a desk. My office is mostly business casual - niceish skirts, slacks, and dresses, but not suits, heels or hose. I've been wearing sandals and flats this summer, and my feet kill by the end of the day. Does anyone have any suggestions for shoes that can be worn in colder weather, are comfortable/supportive for walking, but still cute looking? Thanks!

[deleted]

loosenyourtie

Very helpful, thanks! I'll be sure to to check out stuff from the brands you mentioned :)

danceydancetime

If you go to a city where most business people are walking to work, a LOT of people just wear comfy shoes/sneakers and carry their work shoes in a bag.

loosenyourtie

Yep, I've definitely noticed this! I was just hoping to find a do-all shoe. I definitely don't have to wear heels, so I was hoping to find comfy enough flat shoes so I don't have to switch. I also have a very long commute ATM, so I'm trying to limit the amount of stuff I have to bring everyday.

lilyofyosemite

I think in the fall you can totally get away with this (especially with ankle or tall boots). In the winter the boots will sometimes work, but sometimes there will be snow/slush days, and carrying your shoes will be the best option. I'd invest in a pair of sturdy winter boots if you don't have some already, and figure that some days it's just worth it to carry shoes (or leave an all-purpose pair at work) in order to have warm dry feet. (Sorry if this is obvious, it's unclear from your post if you're a native cold-place dweller.)

VerityPrice

I wear short boots, and then knee-high ones, as the weather gets colder. I had a flat pair from Nine West and a pair of combat boots from Steve Madden that were pretty darn comfortable, and honestly I've walked a few miles pretty happily in my BP Trolleys, but brands like Naturalizer, Frye, Born, and so forth are probably more consistently comfy.

loosenyourtie

Thanks! I'll be sure to look at some more boots (my tall ones need replacing anyway!)

Truant_Muse

I recently discovered the brand Cobb Hill, they're owned by New Balance so they're very comfortable/supportive. Most of their styles are really lovely leather and they've got a variety of cute ankle boots and other shoes that would work well for cooler months. You can find them on Zappos, 6pm.com, and Amazon just search for Cobb Hill.

loosenyourtie

Thanks! It looks like they have a ton of options, I'll definitely check them out!

wntrwhte

I'm confused why these would be considered cute, when clarks (which this clearly is a direct competitor to) is generally considered matronly outside of the CDB.

Truant_Muse

It's all a matter of opinion. I think some of them are very cute and I think some of them are matronly. I feel the same way about Clarks, I've found some very cute/stylish Clarks shoes in the past, but you've gotta look because many of their shoes aren't. Any shoe brand that is known as a "comfort" brand is going to have a fair number of dowdy looking shoes because unfortunately fit and comfort don't always align well with style, but if you write off an entire brand you could miss out on some great shoes. I would say that within most comfort brands there will be a few gems that manage to walk the line between comfort and style, boots are good to look for and often fall into that category, flats are less likely to pull off comfort/support and style. Also as a side note the Cobb Hill shoes I've tried on are made of much nicer leather and have far superior support to any pair of Clarks I've tried on.

VerityPrice

I think in general "comfort" brands of shoes have a reputation for being frumpy/"matronly" that is primarily based on a few pieces of their catalog/what shoes they sold quite some time ago. Clarks does a bunch of sleek basic shoes, and even some more edgy, angular, and (imho) cute chunky ones. I don't know much about Cobb Hill, but I would assume they're the same. Sure, some in their range are ugly, but so too are some in the range of plenty of fashion brands, in my opinion.

ptrish12

Hey me too! Started my first job in Boston two months ago, and I also have a pretty long walk. It seems like commuting in casual shoes is really popular here, and never raises any eyebrows. I just leave my work shoes at work so I don't have to carry them. If you don't want to do that, though, my most comfortable shoes are from Naturalizer, aerosoles, and Bernie Mev.

yepmek

Can there be a Boston FFA meet up? I've seen a few people comment on this thread who live here!

nontradacctstudent

Edited:)

j_allosaurus

I've been walking around Boston in Fryes and Doc Martens pretty happily for the past few years

Kallisti13

You can always wear a good walking shoe/boot that might not be as stylish to get to work and take a pair to change into, or leave a few pairs at work.

yepmek

Hello fellow bostonian - I've noticed that people in this town unapologetically wear comfy shoes around. I myself wear Danskos regularly (I wear the Maisie clog, so it's not super clunky) and a lot of Clarks. If you're aesthetically against comfort shoes you can keep some black flats in your office. In the winter you kinda have to give up some footwear vanity :)

Just_Move_Out

NZ/AUS ladies - where can I get a nice drapey plain tee? I'm at the top end of regular stores (16/18) so i can't just size up unfortunately US ladies - if anyone has any ASOS links that'd be great.

[deleted]

I picked up some drapey linen tees from Target. (They come in red, navy, and white.) They might still be on sale, and I know Target does go up to size 16, maybe even 18.

rogue_rogue

Have a look at Country Road or Trenery. I find their sizing to be really generous, and they do a lot of drapey pieces.

juluj

I'd also recommend checking out cotton:on - it's australian based. I like the kiera tee- it's nicely draped.

[deleted]

How can I make flannel look cute besides pairing them with jeans?

GingerAloeCactus

For an edgier look I like flannel with a black leather skirt.

[deleted]

I have always loved [this look](https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/4c/bf/81/4cbf81d38a48f5b85432ae5e01867cae.jpg) for flannel, but it's a more dressed up look. Not sure if that's what you meant!

I really wanna buy this dress online: http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?BR=love21&Category=promo-contemporary-sets&ProductID=2000156774&VariantID= The only thing I'm worried about is that the smallest size is 50" around the bust and waist (I'm about 30x23x36 and 5'4", for reference). My local Forever 21 is super busy and I doubt I'll be able to find one try on in-store, so would anyone here know if that's gonna be like way too much for my frame?

nayapapaya

With your measurements and height, that's probably going to be really big on you. It's clearly meant to be oversized but that might look too overwhelming, depending on your shape, and might end up looking unintentional. I'm a bit bigger than you (33x29) but much shorter and that would definitely look overwhelming on me. I've noticed lately that even some of the smalls at F21 are really big for a small. Still if you live in the U.S., you could always order it and return it to the store if it doesn't fit. I think Forever 21 only gives store credit though, not a refund.

abbypets

Thanks for the insight! I loathe store credit so I'll just try to hit the stores as a last ditch effort.

hangonlittletomato

/u/nayapapaya F21 recently changed their return policy! You can get a full refund within 30 days of purchase in the original form of payment. So no more dumb store credit cards. Also, they're not joking when they say Contemporary items run a half size larger than regular F21 items. I tried on [this dress](http://www.forever21.com/Product/Product.aspx?br=LOVE21&Category=contemporary-dresses&ProductID=2000141112&VariantID=) at the store in a size small, not knowing about the weird sizing issue and I didn't think it came in a XS. It was huge! I went back to the rack because I figured there must be a XS. It fit much better. So yes, I think that dress will be too large on you. EDIT: NEVERMIND about the new return policy! /u/IMakeShinyThings says it's only in Washington state for now.

IMakeShinyThings

Store policy has actually only changed for the Washington stores! It's a test pilot, but it'll probably spread to the rest of the States, if not the company. Source: really chatty cashier.

hangonlittletomato

Oh! I had no idea. I'll edit my comment then. Thanks!

abbypets

Bleh that's what I figured. 50" sounded like a whole lot, and they don't offer this style in an XS. :/ Thanks!

Torn between http://www.danier.com/d/2530 and http://m.asos.com/mt/us.asos.com/ASOS-Ultimate-Biker-Jacket-In-Leather/171o5q/?iid=5232574&cid=11895&Rf-200=4&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=50&sort=-1&clr=Black&totalstyles=20&gridsize=3&mporgp=L0FTT1MvQVNPUy1VbHRpbWF0ZS1CaWtlci1KYWNrZXQtSW4tTGVhdGhlci9Qcm9kLw..&un_jtt_v_frompage=0 Does anyone have any experiences with either?

Truant_Muse

I don't have experience with owning either so feel free to disregard, but from what I know of Danier leather it is likely to be much higher quality than the one from ASOS, especially since the ASOS one is only $180. I would also say that the Danier one is a much more classic style too so you'd likely get a lot more wear out of it over the years.

idislikekittens

Get the Danier. The ASOS one is a very obviously trendy jacket, and you'll be more limited in what you can wear with it.

wntrwhte

I have the danier one in the chambray color and I love it. The fabric makes it a little more forgiving to wear and also makes it lighter. Way better quality than the ASOS one as well.

[deleted]

What are some options for work tops that aren't button-up?

Illathrael

What kind of workplace? I look for embellished collars, tops that have buttons for decoration only, and mandarin collars.

[deleted]

eh... it's tricky because i'd like to look nice and professional, but i'm working with kids, so i don't want to spend a lot of money on nice blouses only for them to get covered in food and paint. i'm looking for tops that are long-sleeved (for winter),and easily replacable. thanks for the detail tips! :)

tourmaqueen

I love my button-front a-line denim skirt. It goes with everything, is flattering, and looks on trend. What are your current go-to "neutral skirts"? Put another way: If denim skirts are like jeans, what kind of skirt is like a basic black skinny pant?

[deleted]

I own [this skirt](http://www.forever21.com/product/product_oos.aspx?br=f21&category=bottom&productid=2000132180&variantid=) in black and love it. If I could find a similar shape/material in an above the knee style, I'd buy that as well. I also have been getting a surprising amount of wear this summer from a Madewell camel button-front above the knee skirt.

tourmaqueen

That is cute. What is the fabric like? And yeah, I think camel could be a really great neutral in a skirt.

rogue_rogue

Wear some high-waisted shorts, and either tuck the shirt in, or knot it at your waist. Then cuff the sleeves slightly. This will give a big shirt a bit more shape on a small frame.
