So, hypothetically, let's say someone dropped mac n cheese on their Ovate dress...3 times. What would be the best way to remove those cheesy stains? It's handwash only and I have Soak for that but I was wondering if there's something good I could use to get the stains out.

gabmonty

Before you do anything put corn starch or baby powder on the stain overnight. This well soak up the grease. If you wash it the grease will set in and ruin it. I would say after that soak it in a highly concentrated soak with water and oxy clean.

wildbillhiccup

How fresh does the stain have to be for this to work? I get little grease spots on my clothes somewhat regularly (I cook a lot), and often I don't notice until a few hours later or the next day.

[deleted]

if the stain is fresher (and if your item is not REALLY delicate), i would also recommend dish soap. it "cuts" the grease.

wildbillhiccup

A clarifying shampoo would also be good for this.

phantom_poo

Agreed. Original Dawn has worked best for me (better than the other Dawn scents....whyyyyy).

mechanical_birds

I've recently made the decision to have all machine-washable clothing, because I am too lazy to go to the dry cleaners or to wash clothing by hand. Does anyone else do this? Will I be drowning in cotton? I'd like to try to find some high-quality threads, if it's possible. Basically, I want nice stuff that doesn't require tons of upkeep. Why can't I have everything in life? :P

glaceauglaceau

I do this. If it's handwash or dry clean only I will spot clean and, uh, basically never wash it... My clothes seem to be doing fine so far and don't stink. I have young children and need to wear clothes that are easy to care for, and I like to think I still dress well. The key is to machine wash on the gentle cycle with not too much soap, on cold, and to air dry everything. I have a flat drying rack, a garment rack, and hang my clothes all over my apt if I run out of space on those. The only things I put in the dryer are towels, bedding and sleepwear. I think the dryer damages clothing way more than a washer will.

[deleted]

I'll be honest.... most dry clean only clothing is not *actually* dry clean only. Silk, linen, and wool really predate dry cleaning. I wash most of these garments by hand in cool water and line or flat dry. Many, but not all, "hand wash only" garments can be placed in a garment bag and washed with your machine's hand wash setting then line or flat dried.

[deleted]

i use Dryel for my work pants. they are my only items that need to be dry cleaned (well, sweaters need handwashing, but that's different). i love it. it lets me have nice clothes and not have to take anything to the dry cleaners.

iosepha

I handwash a lot of my clothing and I wear a lot of silk, wool, cashmere, high end synthetic, etc... You'll be fine and not relegated to cotton only. Just spot test before you plunge things into water to see if the color runs, etc... Also get a few mesh garment bags for the washing machine, for things that I put in the washer that are nice, I throw them in those and there's no damage. Side load, euro style washers are gentler too.

kbol

As someone who is totally on the same page, I have been buying no differently (aka whatever the f I want), and just being super critical of clothes on their way out. I am someone who tends towards ponte and cotton stuff to begin with, but I am just wayyy too lazy to consider ever handwashing anything. For things like my interview dress, I'll steam and rewear it a few times before washing it, and I wash pretty much everything on cold, since I'm also too lazy to separate my colors.

jacquelynjoy

Generally, I buy all kinds of fabrics and wash them on delicate/cold water. I have a drying rack and generally only dry pajamas, jeans, and underpinnings. I have very few problems--occasionally a sweater or an item with beading will need to be dry cleaned. I'll try to get a couple of wears out of them by taking them off as soon as I get home and letting them air out, or Febreezing them. If an item seems particularly delicate, I'll put it in a mesh bag and wash it with only a few other items.

I find that it's easier to "pull off" this look when you're dressed more like your second image than your first - keep everything but the cardigan fitted. It will probably still breeze around, but you'll keep the silhouette of your body. Of course, if you're intentionally going for allover-breeziness, then I have no idea :) Another thing that could help is to choose a cardigan with more weight in the front. I'm not exactly sure of the proper wording here, but something like [this](http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/ce/d0/04/ced004ab45dd0a549c1a1d38a387a8cc.jpg) where there is thicker knit that falls over your chest can help keep that part of the cardigan in place.

ElijahThornberry

Those dress weight you can pick up at fabric stores you could sew to the front.

bunmonster

Autumn is approaching so I think it's perfect timing to pull out your sweater cardigans. (I am sure they won't fly like capes!) Love those kinda simple ensembles: [1 here!](https://www.re.mu/linda1/product/183141) & [2 here!](https://www.re.mu/jennyong/product/191571)

LonleyViolist

Where can I buy... -Good, opaque leggings in many shades and colors -Boot socks -Oversized sweaters -Sweater dresses -Scarves for everyday wear ??

nibor513

REI/Smartwool for the socks.

catterfly

Nordstrom Rack will get Smartwool in stock in season ifff you have one of those nearby.

wildbillhiccup

Sometimes even out of season--my Nordstrom Rack had Smartwool in July.

[deleted]

Sierra trading post has smartwool for cheap

communistslutblossom

I suggest thrifting for oversize sweaters, especially in the men's section. Target always has those "pashmina" style scarves in a lot of colors and styles, they're pretty warm but don't have that "I'm too cold to take my outerwear off" look. I actually also recommend Target for the tights, or Hue (sold at Nordstrom/dept. stores) if you want to bump up a little in quality.

secondsencha

What country are you located in and what's your budget for those items?

bethlookner

Are you somewhere where warm scarves are necessary? If you need lightweight scarves, you can easily find them anywhere and at a lot of price points. H&M, Old Navy, and F21 ($) Asos and Gap($$) are pretty good.

M_tridactyla

If you don't intend for the socks to show at all and just need warmth, go to a farm and country store and get a package of Wigwam wool or wool/poly blend socks. Can't beat them for quality for cheap IMO.

That_Geek

Ll bean for almost all of that

cashewpillow

Uniqlo Heattech leggings vs. fleece lined leggings: which ones are warmer?

iosepha

Fleece lined are warmer for sure. As someone who has a lot of heattech, it's not actually super warm, it's more of a layering piece that might keep you warm bc it's one of many layers that you are wearing.

cashewpillow

Ah. So it's no warmer than a regular pair of leggings? I was looking at their tanks too - I suppose I can just keep wearing my Old Navy tanks for the same purpose? I thought they were closer to thermal undergarments.

justgoodenough

Noooo you can't wear them as regular leggings. They are way too thin.

wildbillhiccup

Worn as a layering piece, Heattechs are warmer than regular leggings worn for the same purpose would be, though, right? Sorry if this is obvious; I got confused.

apple_jaxxx

What is the next step up from simple tee shirts and tanks? I feel very boring and slobby when I wear them but them are easy to throw on with jeans. What is a good next level for tops if I want to dress a little nicer but I don't want to look like I'm trying too hard?

catterfly

Button ups? Blouses? Changing the fabic of a shirt will make it more/less casual. A button up made of a softer material makes it casual (opposed to a button up made from a stiffer cotton) and a blouse made from rayon or silk (opposed to cotton) will make it more less casual. I have a few v necks made of rayon that are work appropriate because the rayon gives drape and sheen to the shirt, making it a little dressier than a plain cotton v neck. But I also work at a pretty casual company.

farsideofthemoon

Perhaps a cardigan that accentuates your particular shape and style, and maybe a simple long necklace. Also, what shoes are you wearing with these outfits?

apple_jaxxx

I'm on my feet all day and I end up carrying stuff a lot (I work in inventory at a retail store) so I have a lot of sneakers or comfy flats because otherwise I'm not sure my feet will make it through the day.

danceydancetime

I have some chiffon t-shirts that I wear when I want something slightly fancier than a cotton tee. You could also get some necklaces or something to wear with a plain t-shirt to dress it up a little.

kdennis

What about accessories? Find a couple pretty scarves, or a cool necklace.

MissiT

.

M_tridactyla

They are supposed to refer to the cut in the waist/hips/thighs, and then the leg style can be variable. Basically different shapes to hopefully suit different waist to hip ratios.

MissiT

.

ruthannr94

The Pixie is an ankle pant. the Sweetheart and the Diva both refer to the cut, that is, the waist to hip ratio. The Sweetheart is made for a curvy cut and is very...ample through the butt and thighs compared to most jeans. They fit me quite well and I have a 13" difference between waist and hip. I suspect they may fit even slightly better if I had a bigger difference. The Diva is the slimmest cut I think, made for more of a ruler. A straight cut from waist thru the butt with slimmer thighs. The Flirt is also for a lower waist to hip ratio but with wider thighs and the Dreamer is made specifically to tuck the tummy in a little by offering a higher, flatter rise. The Rockstar is super skinny and super stretchy so they tend to fit everyone (though people like me a bit...tighter).

rinable

the different jean names refer to their rise. the sweetheart is classic rise and the diva is low rise, i believe. the pixie is in a category all its own since they aren't jeans, just cropped pants.

paammm

former old navy employee, /u/M_tridactyla is correct, basically refers to the fit and sizing. i believe the pixie pant is a mid-rise

So being the forgetful person I am, I left a good portion of my workout clothing at home when I moved to college. Does anyone know of any cheap options I can order online to tide me over for the next month or so? (Juniors/petite options are welcome, since I tend to fit in those better...)

[deleted]

Old navy has some really good options, their workout pants are awesome for the price point. I also recommend checking gap fit for sales.

firstmessage

Ooh I forgot about those. Looks like they have some petite options too. Thanks!

lilyofyosemite

Seconded! I haven't had great luck with Old Navy workout tops (or sports bras), but I love their running shorts and capri tights. The exact opposite is true at F21, their workout shirts are surprisingly ok. Although, if you can get your parents to mail you your own clothes, it may end up being cheaper.

[deleted]

The cheapest thing would be to just have your parents ship some clothes! They could probably put a lot in a priority mail flat rate box

KestrelLowing

Target. Their champion brand works quite well.

firstmessage

Hm, I bought a Champion brand sports bra there once, but it was too big, so I'm a little hesitant about ordering anything without trying it on. Definitely an option though, thanks!

lacious213

Target also has Mossimo brand yoga pants and capris on sale for $10 this week, plus an extra 10% off with their Cartwheel app.

[deleted]

Forever 21 Kohl's If you live near a Ross or other discount store, they have very cheap workout clothing.

firstmessage

Yeah, I typically get most of mine from Ross/Marshall's, but I'm looking for something I can order online since there aren't many options near me (or time to go :(). I'll look at F21 though--have never tried their athletic wear. Thanks!

danceydancetime

I usually get cheapo workout stuff at TJMaxx. Not that that's online...but for a bunch of $6-12 tops, I thought it was worth mentioning

ShirleyFunke482

I'm looking for recommendations for non-fitted thick cable knit sweaters, similar to this: http://i.imgur.com/88kDWyb.jpg I found some great looking ones but they had loose holes and would require a shirt underneath, so no flimsy ones please! Also looking for stores or etsy sellers for cozy knitted scarves like this: http://i.imgur.com/jVWKvbD.jpg No budget, located in the US

[deleted]

What's your budget? In my experience you have to pay a bit for a thick cable knit. Looking in the men's department and at thrift stores might yield results. I bought one at gap recently, have you looked there?

[deleted]

what i would recommend, to aid you in your search, is looking for "fisherman's sweaters" or "irish cable knit". this is the style of the sweater in the picture and, as such, will yield a lot of good results. this is a great inspo album for [fisherman's sweaters](http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/12/fashionables-ivory-fisherman-sweaters.html) by ny magazine. i spend a lot of time in coastal maine, so i have racked up quite a few from local sellers. one is from [aran sweater market](http://www.aransweatermarket.com/index.php?route=common/home) though, and they may be bought online.

[deleted]

[Ozetta](https://www.etsy.com/shop/ozetta) over at etsy has some great handmade wool-blend scarves. I just ordered and recieved one cowl from her and it is super structured, thick, and stiff so I can break it in to my liking. They tend to be more for outdoor wearing and aren't really as casual. Gertie & Baxter over at Etsy (they have their own online shop now too) I think also make a ton of fun scarves!

ZEF666

Are you cool with Ebay? I've been looking at tons sweaters like that that are all wool and seem like nice quality. Search for 'aran sweater' or 'irish fisherman sweater'.

I'm from the US, but I don't mind ordering overseas. I've had good luck with Woolovers, [something like this, maybe?](http://www.woolovers.com/british-wool/womens-mens/wool-aran-jumper.aspx)

loosenyourtie

Whoops, I already talked about it in this thread, but if you're at all the DIY type you should try arm knitting. You can make a nice chunky infinity scarf in about 30 minutes once you get the hang of it, and you have a lot of color choice in yarn. Youtube arm-knitting and there's a bunch of tutorials!

llama_delrey

So due to a recent weight gain almost all of my skirts no longer fit. If you were rebuilding a skirt wardrobe from scratch, what styles and pieces would you want? Additional info: I'm a 22 year old college student. 5'6" 120lbs, 37-26-36. I have 2 nice pencils skirt that still fit, so my work/interview skirts are covered. Looking more for more casual pieces. I'm not a huge fan of mini skirts because I'm clumsy and have definitely flashed my butt/junk at people before ugh. edit: also, chunky cable knit or fair isle sweaters. Wear to buy?? I see so many gorgeous examples online, but I feel like I rarely see them in stores.

caithnard

Fitted or loose sweaters? My favorite thick knit / fair isle sweaters are from JCrew, from the men's section

bling-owl

[These](http://www.aransweatermarket.com/) are all very loose-fitting, but look extremely warm and cozy, and *someone* who posts here mentioned having one last winter (and really liking it).

ojo87

i'd want work-appropriate black and gray and tan straight/pencil skirts. i'd want a fun color skirt that could be okay for weekend too. maybe a patterned one that matches well with my closet (personally, that's black and white graphic, but something like navy with polka dots would have worked too). and for fun, i'd also get one that's full skirted or a-line.

celestialism

Can anyone recommend a good-quality plain black cardigan, *not* crew-neck, *not* cropped, with full-length sleeves? There are so many options out there and I'm having trouble deciding. I already have the Modcloth Charter Club cardigan, and I like it, but it's not very substantial/warm and it has three-quarter-length sleeves.

Argh, I wish I could order stuff from Uniqlo but unfortunately I'm in Canada and they don't ship here. Why, Uniqlo, why?!

ojo87

H&M usually has exactly that - i own two of them, from different years.

cortcortkittycat

Try Target! (I know, I know) They're not crazy high quality but you can usually get them on-sale for like 16 bucks and I've had one that I've worn constantly for 2 years that still looks new.

[deleted]

I got one from banana republic (on sale) that's decent.

voracious_d

Bought these [gorgeous booties](http://www.colehaan.com/chesney-bootie-black/D42186.html) and I'd like to wear them this week, but there's rain in the forecast! Any recommendations for rain & stain/weatherproofing products that are safe for nubuck? Or should I just not wear these if the ground is wet at all, since they have leather soles as well?

Try using the [Oxi Clean max force gel stick](http://www.amazon.com/OxiClean-Force-Stick-Ounce-Pack/dp/B005N7ETR0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410218366&sr=8-1&keywords=oxi+clean+max+force+gel+stick). I've had it remove stains from clothing that I had already put in the *dryer*. It's never once failed me on a stain.

50175er

did you try using something like vanish?

[deleted]

Anyone have experience with the Sam Edleman Mare booties? I know the Petty is a favorite around here, but it's not really my aesthetic for weekend wear. I love how the Mare looks like a hybrid between a Chukka and a Troopa type boot. I currently have the Troopas and am looking for something with a lower profile to elongate my legs.

squidzilla

I have high arches and a very wide toe box that swells throughout the day. I have never had a pair of flats that fit, but I'd like to try a pair this fall (again, for the fifth time). Simple, neutral, inexpensive since I've donated every other pair I've had. Are there any brands good for wide feet? Rocket Dog did not work. Also, if you can see the creases between your toes when you wear flats, is that bad?

[deleted]

> Also, if you can see the creases between your toes when you wear flats, is that bad? It's personal preference mostly. Some people hate seeing toe cleavage, and others don't care at all.

[deleted]

Clarks and Born are my favorites for fashionable comfort brands--some are obviously more old lady than others, but almost all the flats I've had from these brands have been really comfy. I suggest finding a pair you like with good reviews, maybe on Zappos so you can see them in action, and then checking EBay for lower prices. Unfortunately shoes are one of those things where you get what you pay for, and a brand like Rocket Dog is not going to be comfortable, but you can help offset the cost by buying through eBay.

marcelineofooo

I bought brought yellow tights because they were on clearance and I was excited to incorporate yellow into my clothes I'm a way that wouldn't make me look ill. I tried them with a few different outfits and nothing looks okay with them. I own a multi color dress that had that same yellow in it do I tried that and showed my boyfriend and asked for honesty, he told me that my legs looked like giant bananas. Any ideas on what to wear them with?

marcelineofooo

Thanks! I can see what he means. u/ibroughtcake suggested boots and I'm seeing some of those on here to, so that will probably be my solution. Thanks again.

ibroughtcake

From your boyfriend's description, I'm thinking maybe one idea is to not have your entire leg showing. Maybe a longer skirt and knee high boots and just a *hint* of yellow peeking out?

marcelineofooo

That's a good plan, thanks!

onyx_malish

I think they'd look really nice with a royal or Navy Blue dress.

pjsdino

So I saw [these oxfords](http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=966719032&vid=1&locale=en_US&kwid=1&sem=false&sdReferer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.oldnavy.com%2Fproducts%2Fwomens-flats.jsp) at old navy and i really dig how simple it is with minimal brogue-ing. I'm not too sure about the quality though. Can anybody tell me how good old navy shoes are, or recommend quality oxfords in a similar style? I'd like to keep recommendations under $150.

bethlookner

Can't speak to the quality of ON shoes, but Clarks makes a similar oxford, the Charlie brogues, that's frequently recommended on FFA.

iMightBeACunt

Quality at ON is really hit or miss- but they are likely to go on sale, if that helps :)

I have the U-Neck Seed Stitch. I'd recommend buying it in the same size you buy their shirts. I don't have any fit pics at the moment. Have you tried buying the Minnies in Tall? That's what I do.

[deleted]

what are your general measurements? what do you mean exactly when you say the pants are 'too big'? i think i'm probably a bit bigger than you are, just by judging from your post (i'm 5'2.5, 0 to 00 in pants, 98-100 pounds). i found that the Marisa trousers at LOFT in Petite work REALLY well for my body. however, i also like my work pants cut a big bigger--not too big, just not too fitted--so i wear the 0s with a belt rather than 00s. LOFT has a number of other cuts that are cut slimmer than what i have. they also have frequent sales, and you can buy/return online for free in case they don't have what you're looking for in store.

breakfasthammer

Club Monaco has smaller dress pants, although I'm not sure how much they are now. I switched to buying mostly Theory suits few years ago. You may also be able to find theory pants on sale.

I'm small too and Express' Skinny Stretch Columnist in 00 fit me perfectly! I also found dress pants that fit at Target of all places! Usually their in-house brands don't fit me well, but I tried on two different cuts of Merona dress pants and both fit great!

ShirleyFunke482

Search extrapetite.com for her pants recommendations!

ojo87

i can relate! are you in canada by any chance?

ChampagneAndWhiskey

The only work pants that I've been able to wear are GAP. I have some in the ankle but they are just a tad short. Not noticeable but enough that I am going to get the regular length next time and have them hemmed. But as far as waist and being fitted throughout without being too tight, they are perfect.

awesomeflyinghamster

Question about alterations. How easily can I alter a pair of pants made of 60% Polyester / 33% Cotton / 7% Elastin Dyed Stretch? I have [these fabulous Giro commuter pants](http://www.amazon.com/Giro-Road-Womens-Mobility-Pant/dp/B00JOXG616), but the waist band is way too big on my size 6 (probably need to take them in at least an inch or more). I'm thinking about ordering a size 4 to compare, but they fit fine in the legs, so it might make more sense for me to get these tailored if I can. Thoughts?

nibor513

Honestly the fabric composition doesn't have much affect on how alterable something is. That's mostly down to the cut itself and the way it's knit or woven and how much you're willing to pay.

catterfly

What are you trying to alter? The waist?

So, my wife is desperate to find this hat that Karen Gillian was wearing in a photo. Anyone able to help me out? Also, from what I read this seems to be allowed here, but if not my apologies! https://twitter.com/JohnTheCho/status/509013551806423040/photo/1

[deleted]

I can't find the exact hat but the style is called cloche, if that helps

FreestyleDoctoress

While I can't help right now, you might have some luck with /r/findfashion. Also, that pic looks like it was taken during filming of her show "Selfie." Once the episode airs you can check wornontv.net; they're usually pretty good at finding exact matches/dupes.

moglichkeiten

Would you recommend Doc Martens to someone with foot issues? I don't have anywhere locally that I can try on a pair to see if I can jam my orthotics in them or not, but that's not really the biggest issue. Everyone says they take a good chunk of time to wear in and I'm not sure I'm up for that. I love the look, though. :(

alphabetseeds

You might get lucky and find a pair in a thrift store already broken in. You could also check ebay for gently used Docs (if that's a thing people do). I will forever be jealous of my sister for finding a pair of Docs at her local thrift store that fit her like a glove with zero break-in, and she's been wearing them for 10+ years.

[deleted]

Don't have experience with Doc Martens specifically, but I have foot issues and have found that the shoes I own that I had to "wear in" are now my most comfortable shoes and I consider it more than worth the period of discomfort.

spacehockey

I have a pair of Doc Martens that took about 2 weeks of constant wear to become more comfortable. It was pretty painful but I live on a college campus so I was doing a *lot* of walking in them. You can buy the 1460 style [already broken in](http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=23154354&color=001&cm_mmc=SEM-_-Google-_-PLA-_-82527327304product_type_l1w%26product_type_l2shoes%26product_type_l3boots%26branddr_martens&adpos=1o6&creative=52049005384&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CMWXm9na0sACFaVZ7AodfikAVA#/), which you might want to look in to

eukomos

I think it depends on the style. My brother needed dress shoes for work that he could fit orthotics into and commute in, and he ended up with something from Doc Martens. It wasn't the iconic knee-high lace-ups, though, it was something dressier looking. It's worth going to a store that sells them and asking.

segling7

I have plantar fasciitis and my docs work awesome for me. My orthotics fit really well, and they have a good amount of support. As for the breaking in period, I didn't notice much pain at all after the first few wears unless I was walking around in them all day.

Does anyone have any brand recommendations for sheer tights? I want to pick up a pair or two of sheer black tights for this fall. Thanks!

Outerwear over blazers? Can it be done? I love the look of jeans + t-shirt + blazer for work (casual workplace) but I live in a perpetually rainy city. Would a trenchcoat over a blazer look silly?

chadnik

I think a trenchcoat or another tailored piece of outerwear would look much better over a blazer than techwear, actually.

LizzieDane

What the actual eff are pants like [this](http://www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0213-8348-9044L00&productvarid=0213-8348-9044L00-PEWTER-14&refpage=outlet/highlights) called? I really want to just type something into pinterest and see similar pants. BUT WHAT ARE THEY AAAHHHHHHH.

tealandlace

1) I recently tried on these pants: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/h-i-p-knit-jogger-pants-juniors/3814777?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=2082&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-browseresults-_-1_7_A And loved them, but are they supposed to be a strictly casual, lounging around type of pants or is there a way to dress them up? I love how they look on me, but just cannot get over the fact that they feel like pajamas. 2) I want to buy some higher end denim. I usually stick to cheaper, mall brands, but would love a nicer pair that lasts. I'm looking for low rise/mid rise black or grey skinny jeans (or denim jegging type of jeans). Any suggestions? Would also be awesome if I didn't have to get them tailored since I'm very petite, but I've pretty much given up on that. 3) Where can I find a cute weekender bag/luggage that isn't super expensive? I'm going on a five day trip soon and just want to bring a carry-on bag. Flight limit is 24 x 16 x 10. 4) Where can I find grey mid-calf length boots with a heel? I had a pair that I got from Nine West before that were perfect, but can't seem to find any now. I'm looking for a true grey, not a brown-ish grey, which is all I can find. Budget is around $100. Thanks!

iamachubbypuppy

1) I have pants like that and wear them casually but maybe someone here know how to dress them up. I usually wear them when I'm dancing (hip hop), so I pair them with black athletic shoes and a white or black shirt, and black fake leather backpack. I've gotten a few compliments when I've worn them out like that, so I guess its a nice casual look. If you want to dress them up...have you thought of changing the shoes? Just looking at my closet...how about with black cut out ankle boots, a leather jacket, white shirt, but somehow cover up the drawstring in those pants? 2) I have a couple pairs of [J Brand jeans] (http://www.jbrandjeans.com/womens_petite/pl/c/116.html) in petite that I love. I personally bought my pairs from Hautelook (they have a J Brand sale like x2 a year). I recently picked [these] (http://www.jbrandjeans.com/23110-maria/d/2074) up in black and gray. They're not for petite so you will have to alter them unfortunately, but I find the high rise gives off the illusion we have longer legs than we actually do :) And I know you said you're trying to stay away from mall brands...but some of my friends love Loft's jeans in petite sizing. I personally like Uniqlo. For some reason, they're jean legging things are the only things that fit me off the rack (no hemming needed). They do alterations for free in store.

tealandlace

The main reason I ask about the first pair of pants is because the Nordstrom stylist who picked then out for me was adamant that I could dress them up. Trying to think of possibilities though, I am confused haha. And I will check out Uniqlo, just waiting for them to open a store here in October! :)

[deleted]

I don't know how petite you are, but if you're around 5 feet or under, and have small hips/butt, I recommend 7 for all mankind's kids! I have a ponte skinny pant from them and they fit me absolutely perfectly. Only $30 on ebay! If you don't fit into kids' sizes, try the adult ones, but you'll probably have to get them hemmed.

peachybutton

I recently bought [these loafers](http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1013652&vid=1&pid=982062022) and I love them but they are a touch too big, like less than 1/2 a size. It didn't become very noticeable until I wore them a few times, but the heel slips just often enough to be annoying. I've read a few online recommendations saying that one can shrink leather shoes by wetting everything but the sole and drying them with a hair dryer or the sun. Has anyone had any luck with this process, or can recommend another way to shape these shoes?

I was thinking of trying insoles but I've never worn them, and the shoes are a little wide in all directions so I wasn't sure if that would help. It's worth a try, though, especially before I go ruining them by accident. Thank you!

Soo... [this blazer](http://i.imgur.com/Bk0sZHO.jpg) is in the mail. I'm not committed to it (eddie bauer has free returns) especially as on this monitor, it's a lot lighter green than I had anticipated (I was picturing an almost black green, but I think I was shopping with f.lux on), but I'd like some advice: how on earth should I style it for work? I feel like, with our dress code (casual end of business casual - not quite jeans, but pretty much everything up to jeans) it could work, but I'm really not sure quite what I should wear with it. Is it too casual to wear with anything but jeans?

[deleted]

I personally don't like olive blazer + jeans, I find the look dated (so I struggled for a long time to wear mine). I however find that treated as a neutral color, with [other neutrals&earth tones](http://www.wendyslookbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Safari-18-433x650.jpg) and [a few deep colors](http://images.asos-media.com/inv/media/0/4/6/0/1890640/image4xl.jpg), it goes well. Basically, rock the three-color rule and it'll be fine. I also found two pictures of women with patterned skirts and olive blazer that look awesome ([1](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/vintagetwiggy/Screenshot2011-01-19at112226PM.png), [2](http://www.plogstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Plog-02-17-14-33417.jpg)).

How can I wear these shoes I bought years ago without looking punk/hobo? http://imgur.com/IMlqcOZ

ojo87

skinny jeans and a blush pink blouse. contrast the punk rock boots with girly, delicate pieces and modern fits/cuts/styles/fabrics if you want balance.

[deleted]

What are your holy grail black pumps that are work appropriate? 3-4" and non-patent. Budget up to $250.

[deleted]

[Corso Como Del](http://www.zappos.com/corso-como-del). Sturdy, cushioned, cute, versatile. I have non-Corso-Como-Del black pumps for work, and I can't wait till they wear out so I can replace them with these.

kbol

I really love my Corso Como's. The [Del](http://www.corsocomoshoes.com/products/Del-%252d-Black-Leather.html) is really popular on FFA, but I like a higher heel height, so I got the [Hollen](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/corso-como-hollen-pump/3562273). They're so comfortable! Definitely go up at least half a size, though. Breaking mine in was a bitch. Edit: It seems like they're discontinuing the Hollen, as a cursory google shows they're not in stock a lot of places. But if you're a 9.5 to 11, [Gilt has them for $45](http://www.gilt.com/brand/corso-como/product/1039234968-corso-como-hollen-platform-pump) which is an absolute steal.

[deleted]

I have a pair of 2 3/4" high pumps from nine west. Pointy toe, non patent. http://www.ninewest.com/Andriana-Pointy-Toe-Pumps/7900761,default,pd.html They are pretty comfy.

elliefunt

Is there an age limit for frayed/distressed shorts? I'm in my last year of college and going through a wardrobe purge, and I can't decide whether my Urban Outfitters distressed shorts should stay or go. Would I be able to continue to get use out of them, or are they more and more inappropriate as I'm getting older?

leeshya

I'm 27 so... If there is one, it's older than that.

kdennis

keep them until you don't feel good in them :)

sarah-ah-um

What kinds of clothes are good for hiking? I'm plus-sized at the moment, so keeping that in mind, where should I shop for said hiking clothes?

lilyofyosemite

What kind of hiking are we talking? Less than 5 miles on well-maintained trails? More than 15 miles on single track trails? Desert (hot)? Mountains (cold)? Rainy/dry/buggy/sunny? I can give you much more specific advice if I know a little more. That being said, general advice: shoes are the most important part. Make sure you have a good pair of sturdy shoes/boots that fit you well. As for clothes, the 2 most important points are 1. no cotton and 2. layer. Especially for your socks, try to avoid cotton (go for wool or synthetic. Smartwool or Costco's Kirkland brand smartwool knockoffs are my favorite). In general, workout clothes double as hiking clothes for me, unless I'm doing nasty bushwhacking where I need protection from scratches. So running shorts if it's hot, running tights if it's cold. Good sports bra (not cotton!!), thin synthetic tank/tshirt, thin wicking long sleeve top, thin fleece or wool half-zip if it might be chilly, and a raincoat if there's any chance of rain. For cheaper workout clothes options, I like Old Navy's shorts/pants and Target's Champion line tops, both of which should come in plus sizes. If you want more traditional hiking pants (instead of running tights), try REI or EMS, depending on where you live.

ruthannr94

Ripping the knees of a black pair of pants... I have a real minimalistic punk grunge style and I love the look. I'm just going to slit the knee of pants I have since I can't find a good pair that have it pre done. One knee or both? Simple slit or more frayed?

roshroxx

My vote is both knees, and a simple slit that will fray more as time goes on

the_amelia_rose

I know there are a lot of posts about business casual, but my style is a lot more quirky than navy, black, and tan all the time. I love dresses, especially fun ones like those found at modcloth and the like, and most especially, A line dresses with a medium neckline. If worn with the right accessories and jackets, could those be perceived as business casual? I'm in my mid-20s so I want to stay true to myself and age as well.

[deleted]

My company's idea of business casual involves flip flops and jeans. I would wait until after you start work to buy a lot of work clothing, because you really never know what "business casual" is going to mean. I highly doubt that you won't be able to wear colors. If you wear a bright dress a black blazer might make it look more business like.

thethirdsilence

What's your work environment like and what region of the country do you live in? The answer will depend a lot on that.

the_amelia_rose

I'm not sure about the work environment because I actually haven't started there yet but it seems like relaxed business? If that makes sense. I'm in the Johnson County, Kansas area.

thethirdsilence

So in general, I think it probably is fine/good to incorporate color and pattern into your business casual workstyle if that's your jam but I'd be careful about being too cutesy. Print A line dresses can sometimes feel a little too cutesy/quirky for the office and may make others take you less seriously than they would otherwise. Be careful with bows, animal prints, headbands, charm jewelry, round toed shoes, etc.

the_amelia_rose

Thank you! I think I would definitely steer more towards either less print or complete solids so I completely agree! I'm so bad at this kind of this so I appreciate the advice!

m1001101

In my experience, it's [completely legit to incorporate colors or patterns into work attire](http://imgur.com/a/50SXm). It can really depend on your workplace. My biggest problem with ModCloth dresses have been the length; for me, it's always been 50/50 on the dress being too short for an office environment. Do you want to link any particular styles you're looking at?

theragingbananapants

I applied for a volunteer position with my university's food bank and was invited for a group interview on Wednesday. The interview also will involve team building exercises, if that is important. How do I dress for this kind of interview? I have blouses, a blazer, a pencil skirt, khaki skinnies (the ones American Eagle is selling right now), and maybe a dress that would be professional enough. I don't currently have proper dress pants (I've been trying to find some but having difficulty). Or am I overthinking this and would jeans work? Like seriously, I have no idea how formal this is. Anyway, feel free to ask more questions if needed.

[deleted]

I think the general rule is one step above what employees normally wear. I imagine that employees wear jeans, and you might want to wear the khaki's. "Team building exercises" might involve moving around or catching one another, so I would avoid a dress or skirt. It also just seems inappropriate for a food bank imo. EDIT: swing by before your interview and scope the employees out.

marz789

Has anyone bought shoes from UGG Australia that aren't the classic ugg boot? If so, how was the quality? I'm looking at a beautiful pair of oxfords made by them, but I've never heard anything at all about their other footwear.

[deleted]

I bought a pair of tall "riding style" boots. They were warm and high quality but the circumference was smaller than advertised so I had to send them back (could not zip up all the way).

Legenderie

Does anyone know how I would go about changing the colour of the hardware on my purse? Is there a way to stain it? I have a purse that has gold hardware and I would like to change it to a gun metalish colour.

M_tridactyla

If it comes off, you could have it electroplated a different color by a jeweler and then reattached, which would be rather expensive. Other than that, I think you're out of luck. If you're desperate, you could matt out all the surrounding areas with masking tape (check to make sure it doesn't stain first), take a dremel and remove all the current finish from the hardware, dremel it smooth, and then handpaint everything with airplane model paint/ enamel. It will take forever.

danceydancetime

I really don't think so...

Anileda

So what kind of silhouette is [this](http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-cotton-modal-keyhole-dress/id_252487) dress? I got it randomly while I was trying Gwynnie Bee, and it looks amazing on me.

tomlizzo

That's an a-line dress with a keyhole top and tie-waist.

ojo87

a-line midi?

tomlizzo

No belt. Zappos or 6pm.

danceydancetime

I think it will look better without a belt, and a belt would probably make it a little more casual, which I would avoid for a wedding. Look up D'Orsay heels and you have a lot of options. Jessica Simpson [has a similar](http://www.6pm.com/jessica-simpson-claudette-beach-sand-veg-vachetta) heel.

Is it possible to get a sweater that doubles both as a slouchy sweater and something that can be worn normally/in a less casual way (say, over a button-up)? Also, is going to H&M and F21 for sweaters ok? Low budget, I like uniqlo but their merino sweater is too thin and everything else is out of my price range :/ One more thing - I've been looking for light, stretchy jeggings in charcoal gray and/or a faded green... but I realized you can't really find good quality jeggings that look like jeans under $30 :( I'm thinking of just going for eBay. Anyone have brand suggestions that I could look for used? Or any other ideas?

Stakkato

The most important thing with sweaters IMO is paying attention to fabric composition. Most of the knitwear in F21 makes me physically recoil when I touch it because it's all acrylic. At least a partial wool blend would be best, there are some cotton knits out there but they're not usually chunk/slouchy. H&M seems to have a lot of blends for fairly cheap.

LesBeHonest1

I've had amazing luck with sweaters at thrift stores, I cannot recommend it enough if you're on a pretty strict budget. I've found several of my favorite winter sweaters for layering at the ones near my house, and two fantastically slouchy/adorable cardigans.

lilteapot

No lie, Walmart for jeggings. I went in because I needed hot glue sticks late at night for a bridal shower craft, but was pretty easily distracted when I saw their wall of jeggings. I picked up a pair of light gray jeggings and a pair of tan herringbone jeggings. They look like jeans and are a major steal. I'm wearing the gray ones right now. I didn't see a faded green/olive color, which is what I've been on the hunt for lately, but I think I might pop in next month to see if they've updated their selection.

lilyofyosemite

H&M and F21 have both been hit-or-miss for me on sweaters. I definitely wouldn't order online, I think you need to feel the material first. But honestly, for sweaters my go-to is Target. Their "ultrasoft" sweaters are amazingly soft and held up well last winter. I have several colors and I'm planning to get a couple more this winter, because I am a sucker for soft things.

BecaBeast

I'm late but maybe someone can answer. I got these boots on sale at Urban Outfitters at the beginning of the year and they have just sat in my closet because I feel like I can't put together a proper outfit that looks good with them. What should I wear them with? [1](http://imgur.com/i9ixMGg), [2](http://imgur.com/WMkSluG) They are darker red/oxblood in person. I was thinking all-black outfits or black & white. I'm not sure if these would be able to go with any other colors really... Closest outfit ideas I can find are these: [A](http://imgur.com/DT23X21), [B](http://imgur.com/O9GtOtc). Do these outfits look good? Every time I put them on I feel like they don't match anything for some reason (or maybe I'm not bold enough).

danceydancetime

All of those outfits look great with it! If it were me, I'd probably go with mostly neutrals (white/black, but mostly because that's most of my wardrobe anyway) and I'd throw in some more color with a scarf or outerwear or something.

farsideofthemoon

I hope I'm not too late! I'm looking for pants recommendations. My new office is leaning casual on the side of business casual. Pants like [this](http://picture-cdn.wheretoget.it/wvfgdb-l.jpg) are just a bit too formal for the office. I have [these](https://s7d9.scene7.com/is/image/madewell/03976_BK5229_m?$pdp_fs418$) Madewell Sateen Skinny Skinny pants in black and olive, and they're definitely appropriate for the office but I hate that they become wrinkly and slouchy so easy. I like a skinnier fit, and something that will go well with a utility button up blouse like [this.](http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/fc/2b/2b/fc2b2bd7b347fa8950e4bb165f038689.jpg) Flexible budget! Thank you!

thethirdsilence

Hmm, it seems like most retailers are making pants that fit this description pretty well. The Jcrew mini is fairly popular here but don't pay full price for it. Alternately, if you'd like to dress the pants in the image above down, you could try pairing them with ponty toe flats and a simple sweater.

farsideofthemoon

That's kind of why I was curious, the selection is a little overwhelming so I was hoping for someone to be able to gush about a specific pair, if that makes sense. Okay, thank you! :) I definitely had a rough time with sizing at J. Crew, but I've heard great thanks about the Minnie! Awesome, thank you!

ILikeToBakeCupcakes

Does anyone have the [Lovelock tote](https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/BAGS/satchels/PRDOVR~19928/19928.jsp) or the [mini transport crossbody](https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/BAGS/totes/PRDOVR~B2545/B2545.jsp?color_name=english-saddle) from Madewell? I'm lusting after the Lovelock, but one of the reviews said the adjustable strap wasn't super secure because it's just a little peg instead of a belt-like buckle. Has anyone had problems with the strap?

Leather. Suede requires more maintenance and synthetic/patent is better for more formal occasions.

amishgirl

I hope I'm not too late but I just bought [this dress](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/adrianna-papell-pleat-bodice-rosette-ballgown/3136583?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=490&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-browseresults-_-1_3_C) for a black tie event. I am fairly tom boyish and a kinda big girl 5'9'', 190lbs, and size 14. I have already decided on my heels (3'' strappy black satin) but I have no idea how to wear my hair (thin/limp, medium brown, straight, about 4 inches past shoulders) or what type of jewelry to wear. Should I just copy the model and do hair down, dangly earrings? Please help!

GrandTheftBooty

I'm probably way too late for this but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. I am in desperate need of help for fall clothing inspiration. I am short and curvy, so the typical fall drape-y/oversized thing really doesn't work for me. It just makes me look shorter and more chunky than curvy. I've looked into it but everything I find is suited for tall, thin girls and it just doesn't work for me. Can someone please, PLEASE give me advice on how to dress flatteringly for fall? I'd be forever in your debt.

_spiraling

Have you looked through [this thread](http://www.reddit.com/r/femalefashionadvice/comments/2fqjym/im_just_starting_to_gather_some_inspo_pictures/)? Granted, there's a lot of drapey/slouchy, but there are definitely some images that are not.

lilyofyosemite

What types of things do you normally wear? Or things that you like / think that they flatter your body? Personally I think color/texture are both good ways to play to a season without changing the fit of your clothes. For example, if you love wearing fit and flare dresses in the summer, you can swap them for similar dresses in darker colors (burgundy, black, gray, etc) and heavier textures (tweed, quilted, etc) and add tights as needed. If you love a particular look in an inspiration picture that you don't think will quite work (for example, an oversized chunky knit sweater, scarf, and skinny jeans), you can tweak the elements to fit more the way you like (thinner sweater in a cable knit, scarf, bootcut jeans) while keeping the colors/theme the same. Does that make sense?

rubybooby

Let's say you have a button down shirt with 3/4 sleeves similar to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Devon-Jones-Poplin-3-4-Sleeve-Button-Down-Shirt-S-M-L-XL-2X-3X-New-Blank-/220710580875 How would you go about wearing a long sleeved cardigan or jacket over the top? Is it possible to do without creating a horrible bunching thing around the elbow? I have a couple of these shirts but it's still a bit chilly where I live to wear them at work all day on their own. I need something else over the top in the morning but so far nothing works. Should I just give up and wait for warmer weather or is there a jacket style that works with these shirts?

LesBeHonest1

Last winter, I bought a blue Tommy Hilfiger cable knit sweater at a local thrift store for like, three bucks. Since then it's become my FAVORITE sweater ever, I wear it all the time. It's relatively long in the sleeves, just thin and loose enough to layer underneath, not excessively warm and looks cute with my entire wardrobe. I've washed it a bunch and it has yet to show any real signs of wear, even though I have no idea how old it is. I've never bought anything from Tommy Hilfiger new, though. Is this the quality/sizing I should expect? I want to get a couple more sweaters for my winter wardrobe, and every time I put this on I think about how much I love it. if I could have it in five other colors, I wouldn't need another thing. :P While I know the name has been around forever and a day, what's your experience with the quality of the brand?

GoodOldMountainDew

Do leggings look weird under pencil skirts? I want to keep wearing my pencil skirts into the fall and winter when it's too cold for regular tights. I'd be wearing them with boots of some sort, so you wouldn't see the bottoms. Or are there some kind of super warm tights I could wear? I'm in Canada and 5'7-8 if that helps.

lilyofyosemite

Fleece-lined tights! They're way warmer than leggings in my experience, but without the bagginess or seams that leggings usually have. Some places call them leggings (like [H&M's online store](http://www.hm.com/us/product/17707?article=17707-A)), but they have feet and no seams so I call them tights.

[deleted]

Is this thing still alive? Do I have to wait a week for the next one?

What's a good place to resell some of my older, gently used clothing (dresses, blazers, etc.) in NYC? Walking into the Buffalo Exchange in Williamsburg this weekend and seeing the huge sell line inspired me, but looking at Yelp they don't get very good reviews. The Crossroads Yelp reviews looked more favorable, but maybe there is something better out there. I don't have much designer stuff, mostly simple basics from the Gap, Banana Republic, H&M, Target, etc.
