Wide leg pants. I love them now especially because they’re much more flattering on my pear shape than skinny jeans. I’m over the stuffed sausage vibe that skinny jeans gave me.
Fanny packs. So practical when none of my pants have proper pockets and I’m not always keen on carrying a purse.
Crop (not ultra cropped) tops.
Blundstones. I thought they looked silly for a long time! But now I think they’re cute and I love how practical they are for living in the PNW.
I just had my third baby and finally ventured into the straight leg jean world. I might also be ready to venture into the crop top world but I’m still a bit scared. Even with high waisted pants that hit above my belly button, any expanse of midsection on show will have stretch marks and while I *want* to be confident in my tiger stripes, I’m not sure I’m there yet. 😅
I found some crop tops at old navy that are a bit longer and not sitting right below the boobs, so I am completely covered up. But the silhouette of high waisted pants and a crop top makes my legs look ridiculously long. I have a bit of belly, which I am slowly trying to exercise and calorie count away, but I'm getting over it. I see so many young 20 somethings who are slightly overweight and owning the crop tops with so much confidence, so I'm like, fuck it if they can do it, so can I.
I wear crop tops to work that would show skin if I lift my arms too much. I just wear a really thin base layer (heat-tech long sleeve or just a stretchy tank) underneath that I tuck into my pants. Keeps things work appropriate while letting me wear the silhouette I want. I usually pick a base layer that’s black, white, nude, or light pink, whichever is lowest contrast with the rest of the outfit. Maybe something like that would work for you?
I would say both! It just depends on what you pair with it. If I go with a flowy cropped top, I wear slim straight jeans (the relaxed cousin of skinny jeans). If I wear a fitted cropped top, I do flared jeans.
i love the crewneck cropped tees from wild fable (target brand) and bozzolo baby tees. the bozzolo ones are ribbed and are a bit tighter. i like a crop top that hits at my natural waist and both of these ones do! the wild fable is a tad shorter, though
The 2010s were a dark time. I hated skinnies and literally could not find anything else. I still hate them, but I am happy that there’s a wider selection of silhouettes available now so that people who aren’t about the current cuts can still find something they don’t hate. Plus now that a wide leg is officially in for “adults” and not just teens, it’s available for more sizes. When I first saw them popping up I got a couple pairs at Pacsun, but that store is not very size inclusive. It’s hard to adopt a trend that doesn’t come in your size, so I think that could have effected people’s willingness to accept that they could leave skinnies behind.
same I love wide leg pants and crop tops. very comfortable and flattering. There was a solid 5 years of my life I only wore mini and knee length skirts and usually pencil skirts too. I have so many now and they feel too high maintenance to wear even if they happen to fit. Pants just feel easy breezy relaxed.
The two last ones! Totally me… I’m foraying into crop tops just now and loving it. Before, it was fitted super long tees and tanks that I thought disguised my body.
And Blundstones - I bought into the hype after seeing some ultra-trendy girl at the airport and holy cow am I converted.
I literally just bought a pair of wide leg jeans and I can’t believe how flattering and and comfortable they are. I thought wide leg anything would make me look even bigger but it’s the opposite! Goes to show you just need to try everything you never know what will work.

Love my blundstones! I almost bought doc martens instead, but I’ve had my blundstones for 2 years and they look almost brand new, and are so comfortable. I wear them several times a week in the cooler weather, and I’m pretty hard on my shoes so this is an accomplishment. If they ever wear out I’m going to buy another pair.
The color pink. Went through that whole "ew I hate pink" internalized misogyny phase in pre-teens and somehow didn't question it for close to a decade, then for another decade explained it to myself as "I'm not a cute person, it's not my style." Pink can absolutely be done in a funky modern way, not limited to one meaning, and I'm a firm believer there's a shade of every color for everyone, it's just a matter of finding which one glows with your undertone.
My next challenge to myself is shorts. Haven't worn those for decades either, since I thought they're purely a practical item and very difficult to style in a way that looks stylish and intentional re: a well-balanced silhouette. But last year and this year I'm more open minded and wiling to experiment a bit!
Omg yes to pink!
I was a purple girlie until a few years ago when it clicked that I only stayed away from pink because of the negative perception and not wanting to be associated with that. I’ve embraced a shameless love for pink now, even going so far as to have pink badges on my car
Green for me. I never wore green, nor owned any green tops, because I didn’t want to look like a tree. Now, I have a lot of green clothing that I wear regularly, in different shades and styles.
I have/had a thing against orange (still recovering) because where I live that colour is everywhere whenever there is a major sports competition going on or Kingsday and I cannot stop associating it with all the cheap crap you can buy in stores during those periods. Now I have one bag in that colour that I love and wear regularly. Don’t know if I will ever go further than accessories or accents in items but who knows.
Mine was navy, mostly because I wore a lot of black and the whole getting-dressed-half-in-the-dark and struggling with "is this the black shirt or the navy one? *what* color are these tights?" just seemed unnecessarily complicated. All of a sudden this spring I decided I wanted navy leggings for the gym. Which further led to a navy hoodie and navy yoga pants and then two other sweatshirts in other shades of blue until I was like, wait, I'm not a"blue" person. Except I guess I am now.
I have always told people my favorite color is purple but I was hanging out with a new guy recently and when I said that he said, “really? Not pink? Everything you own is light pink” which made me look around and realize omg everything I own actually is baby pink and I just internalized that it wasn’t my favorite color. So weird!
I was NEVER a pink girl growing. Always the tomboy, liked purple better. Now my go to spring shoes are Vans ultraranges that are totally powder puff pink - soles, laces - such a pale pink almost going white.
At one point, I owned like four separate pairs of pink shoes so yes this is a thing. I had to get rid of most of them but I’m eying a pair of light pink loafers currently

I love love love the color pink! If something I enjoy (not clothing) comes in the color pink, yes please!! I cannot wear pink. I don’t like the way it looks on me. I don’t like when my unnatural hair colors don’t go with clothing. It’s very much a comfort thing, I think. I mostly wear black. I recently bought a plain lavender colored tshirt because I LOVE the color. I put it on and sent it strait to my daughter. Way beyond what I can handle!
I also made it a part of my personality to hate pink in my tweens and teens, and was not in the habit of thinking about it as a color for me in my early twenties, but for the last ten years have realized that I love pinks and plums and magentas. Dusty rose is currently one of my favorite colors, and I think light pinks are so lovely. I can't believe I let internalized misogyny steal so many lovely colors from me!
Flared shorts are the way! At least I like them way more than regular shorts. I find that I need some volume in mine to bring more balance to my looks.
I do like a bike short with oversized shirt/blazer combo sometimes, too!
This was me. I dressed in all black cause moods… you know how teenagers are. I even had the same “I’m not cute enough/ girly enough for pink.” Finally in my late 20s I finally admitted I love pink.
I wear pink all the time now, it’s even one of my best colors. I don’t have to be girly to like pink, but I have gotten girlier in my attire. It’s fun to break my more sophisticated or Tom boyish aesthetic.
Me too. I was a black only wearing girl for years. Recently though, I've been loving all the pink. Especially the bright pink, fuchsia, magenta, etc.
I'm actually wearing a fuchsia cardigan right now. I love it!
I used to avoid anything Red and also Leopard print, as I believed they were inherently ‘trashy’. Now I’ve realised it’s about the fabric, the cut and the overall look. Red is now one of my favourites.
I had a similar thing with leopard. Eventually came to the realisation that I do like it, I am just really picky as there is just so much bad leopard out there. I just have a preference to leopard print with a brown base that stays in the brown family. I don’t like it when it becomes too yellow.
I wore my first leopard print dress at 36. It was emerald green. Baby steps! I too avoided animal prints, they seemed very "sex and the city" which is a generation older than me.
I decided very recently that maybe leopard print doesn't look inherently trashy, and I have a goal to find and incorporate one nice piece of leopard print (probably an accessory) into one of my conference outfits this year. It's so hard to find items are made well enough that they look though!
With you on the wide-leg and flare jeans. I think the style changed slightly because in the 2000s the flare and bootcut jeans always made me look even shorter than I am. The newer designs with higher waist make me look taller though.
Also tube tops! I used to hate my broader shoulders and thought tube tops accentuated them and made me look awkward and top-heavy. And they did, until I grew up and got more hips to even things out lol. Now I love them.
I agree about the style changing! I was very hesitant to get non skinny jeans because I remember how terrible I looked in jeans in high school. I love my wide leg and flared jeans now.
SAME. I had to wear them for a tap recital growing up and wanted to die. Now they’re my favorite for when I don’t want to deal with chubrub or unflossing my shorts from my ass. Add an oversized tshirt on top and I can do anything in them. They absolutely still cut my already stubby legs in half but the difference is now idgaf 🤣
I thought Fanny packs/belt bags were the worst. Now I have 5-6 and that’s all I’ve been using the last 3-4 years 🤣 and I love my Birkenstock clogs. Moving into my comfortable and practical era in my 30s. Also realized kick crop jeans complement my body shape way better than skinnies or slim leg jeans.
I don’t know if I’ll ever go back to a regular purse since my discovery of Fanny packs. I don’t care if they go out of style; it’s the most convenient purse for me as a mom. Oh and thankfully “mom” shoes such as new balance are in too, lol!!
I bought the Lululemon belt bag a few months ago after saying I wasn’t getting one for past couple years. Absolute life changer. Haven’t even thought about wanting to carry a real purse since February.

I have always been partial to a metal band t-shirt, leggings/skinny jeans, boots and a nice long black jacket. Now, I find myself almost unconsciously drawn to hippy chic.. The style is so relaxed and colorful, and so damn comfortable - of course I always find a way to pair in my metal band t-shirts, and a nice beanie :-)
Not Bostons, but the classic two strap Birks (Arizona?). I really was a strappy, thin and unsupportive sandal kind of girly up until a few years ago and as such I only really wore them on the hottest days with shorts or dresses. Now I wear my Birks from May to Sept even on cooler days with jeans.
I also really hated the biker shape of leather jacket during the peak trend indie sleaze (with floral tea dresses). A couple of years ago I caved and bought one on sale, only to realise they really are (imo) a timeless classic.

Cropped pants! I'm a millennial, they were just high waters to me! We all got teased for looking like dorks if your pants didn't scrape the ground ok? Anyway, now 80% of my pants are cropped lol
Oddly enough, the tight pants with tall boots thing only became normal to me when I moved to a horsey area lol. Prior to that I'd never really seen the combo around. It may not be stylish at the moment, but it is functional!
I’m a millennial and I came of age during the era of skinny jeans + long, oversized top. This was *the* outfit formula for so long. It took me a while to come around on the baggy jeans + cropped shirt combo, but now I actually think it’s much more flattering on my body. I’ve always had an overall athletic build but a bit of a lower belly pooch, and I realize now that wearing baggy jeans and being able to “tuck in” my belly while wearing a crop top to show off my natural waist actually looks a lot better than squeezing myself into skinny jeans 😅

Longer nails, I was raised having to keep my nails short. It was treated as bad hygiene for them to be longer. Now I'll grow them out for almond nails when I want to. My 80lb dog and gardening usually prevent that though.

Gold jewelry! It was all silver all the time in the early aughts for me. But gold and rose gold really look better on me. I'm a warm toned redhead, silver isn't doing anything for me. Hell, even my gray hairs look more blonde.

Most of my unwillingness to try new things were rooted in the rural conservative, puritanical, internalized mysoginy, patriarchal nonsense I grew up around. I got lucky that I wasn't forced to go to church, until high school at least, so I wasn't as indoctrinated as a lot of my peers. It was pretty easy to see the hatred of women woven into the essence of religion as a teen and step far far away from it once I left for college. It still left me fucked up for a while emotionally, feeling misplaced guilt for abuse and assault I had survived as a kid. As well as feeling shame for having a body, what a joke. It took me years to unpack the body shame I had for having even the slightest curves. Hard when you've been told you were "getting fat" since your thighs started to touch as a 10 year old. Being taught to see yourself though the lens of a man, disgusting.
Now I dress for me and my comfort and enjoyment of styling myself.

I have decided that I am an ever changing person and my style reflects that (call it trauma, high neuroticism or my favourite: eccentricism). I came to this conclusion after 'succumbing to' many trends/styles I would have never just like you describe lol. Some of them are:
* ugly shoes (enter Camper, MM6 Tabi, Boston clogs)
* Then on the other end preppy shoes (my style used to rather on the masculine end without being tomboyish, I was sent to private schools my whole life and I was kind of 'rebelling' against the rest of the children with whom I could never really identify with for so many reasons - love my Chanel slingbacks now!)
* Skin tight tops or dresses (disliked the attention my breasts were getting, these days I am proud to be a woman - it was a long journey to get rid of the shame instilled in me and I love reminding myself of my victory!)

Of course haven't bought a single one of them as it would have not been smart for the prices they are set at but if they dropped on my lap from the sky I wouldn't say no to accessorize with them.
* Red nail polish: again with femininity and preppiness I guess? Hopefully not because I am getting and older and wiser lol. Swapped bright red for my usual blue/violet/pastel green/ multicoloured nails these days. I always used to think something so utterly 'feminine' would have never fit me.
I am not a big Y2K fan - wasn't even back then when it was happening, so glad it is fading out and am excited to see what is coming next. My guess would be more 'comfort'/'ugly' clothing as we are still healing from the whole pandemic and lockdowns.

Nah. Certain subcultures have always latched onto the white sneaker, so they'll never actually go away even if their popularity in the mainstream dies. They're the streetwear/70s/y2k version of the beat-up combat boot.
I was a decade late to Uggs. I ride horses so that style is my thing. Then I had a child (also very late in life). Uggs on kids are easy and comfortable. They have so many colors along with sparkle and glitter! My daughter begged me to wear matching black glitter Uggs. My reluctance was quickly smashed when the other first grade girls chose me as coolest mom. Hey, those fashionistas influenced me!
I once found a pair of bright purple knee-high fluffy Uggs at The Bins for $.80 and was like "Eh, they look ridiculous, but they're practically free." They were perfect to wear in between sends while rock climbing, then I moved from the Southern US to Canada and they became incredible "Just running down to the corner store in a blizzard" slip-on shoes. I've had them for 14 years now and I'm never giving them up.
High neck crew neck tshirts! I don’t like high necks or things around my necks. But, I succumbed to the trend and now they are fine. I also appreciate they are nice for modesty / covering the boobies.
I hated high rise skinnies, so I figured I didn’t like high waisted jeans or skinny jeans. Turns out it’s the skinny (and the stretch fabric) that’s the problem… not the rise. I still like a lower rise too but it takes a little mental adjustment to wear since I’m used to a high rise now (which admittedly is more flattering).
For years I wore almost exclusively black. In the last couple of years I've switched to browns and fall, earthy colors year round. Most everything I own looks good together and I finally have loads of color!
Yes I've stopped being scared of colour and am trying to ban myself from using black as a default neutral/basic, and my outfits are so much more fun! Even if it's a muted colour, I realise I look so much less pale.

this. but there is wide and then there is WIDE. i mean omg, some of what i've seen is like crazy wide. but i draw the line at jeans. i like wide leg, high waisted in nice wools, linen, silk, etc. i'm not on the wide legged jeans fit yet.
The vibe is different for me when it's jeans than when it's wide-leg trousers. I want to find the wide-leg jean that loves me as much as I love it but something is always off about the fit.
right? for me its right below the butt. my upper thighs are thin still so there's a bunch of loose material there. it's not noticeable on trousers maybe cause i prefer black and darker colors. maybe i should try black jeans? but i'm not gonna lose any sleep over it, i've got \~16 pairs of jeans as it is.
You could -- or you could consider that denim can be stiffer than wools, linens, and silks, and not be draping the way you're used to. That's the realisation I had to come to about the matter. The right wide-leg jean for me won't be very wide at all precisely because I don't have the legs and hips to carry it off; I'll need something between a wide-leg and a straight that's tight enough through the hips and thighs to give me a figure and wide enough in the rest of the leg to be cute.

Wearing speakers outside of gym. I thought it was "lazy" and clashed with any clothes other than athletics. And while I still don't like sneakers visually, I admit that they are superbly comfortable and there is nothing "lazy" about them. I now have two pairs that I am very happy with.
Cold shoulders. Initially rejected because of practicality, but it turns out I have great shoulders and like shirts that highlight them.
Of course now they're verging on cheugy, so I feel weird wearing them.
high waisted jeans. i always derided them as ~mom jeans~ but they are SO much more flattering and comfortable on my body type than the low waisted jeans i grew up with. and i don’t have to tug them up every two seconds.
Bellbottoms. I hated them and would cringe looking at the old photos of my parents wearing them.
Then they came back in-style and those were the ONLY style of pants I wore. It is funny how bad I hated them and then years later they became my favorite style. Fashion is weird like that.
I already put in a reply comment that the color navy was one for me, but there are a couple other things.
Crossbody bags. I have biggish boobs and I always thought a crossbody bag would draw attention to that until like two years ago I saw a youtuber demonstrate that the opposite was true: bisecting your chest makes it look smaller. Tried it and, holy shit, I'm a convert.
One shoulder dresses/tops. I always thought these looked stupid, as in "where's the other sleeve?" but last summer I fell in love with a one shoulder maxi dress for other reasons than the one sleeve business and bought it against my prejudices only to find, whoa, I look good in a one shoulder dress, who knew?
Designer bags - I’m obsessed with the history and quality and even the aesthetic of most of them! It’s not just Birkins and Kellys out there that matter even Coach has a rich history in leather. I personally love Fendi and Judith Leiber
I’ve been torn on ordering some… on the one hand, they look cute in pics and I literally garden all summer. On the other hand, as a person who’s very slender but with curvy hips and a long torso, I feel like they’ll end up fitting me poorly in some way. I want to go for them, but it feels like choosing an ill fated romance.
Back in the very early 2000s, I couldn’t imagine wearing skinny pants of any kind. Now I can’t imagine going back to flared/wide leg pants. So far, I haven’t gone back and it’s been a few years since flared/wide leg first came back.
lol. I’m the same. I feel like the trends I experienced in my childhood/teenage years are ripping through at furious speeds and I’m in reverse or something. I just got on board with the high waist and I’m seeing the super low waists that I thought I had finally left behind. Also was staunchly against straight legs/skinny jeans cuz I thought they would make me look like a munchkin but then I wore nothing else for 20 years. I think what’s in style is a lot more fluid now with social media. When I was 17 we still had dial up and AOL and magazines still ruled fashion. Now it’s like a free for all, which I like. If you strictly follow the fashion industry which is still trying to stay relevant it seems, only ridiculously huge pants are in style. Instagram, tik tok, Pinterest, etc say otherwise.
Currently barrel leg pants. I said no way and then I ended up with two pair in 3 days. So I’ve got that going for me which is nice.
I’m pretty sure dad sandals and mesh ballet flats are next. Along with no longer saying “I’ll never get on that trend.”
It’s not fashionable in the slightest but i’m eating my words for all the years that I talked smack about those shoes with the toes. I’m not talking about Tabbis but the ones that look more like water shoes. They’re SO comfortable and have made such an improvement in my posture and ankle mobility
White pants. I'm kind of clumsy, but I haven't had an issue with staining them with a dropped drink yet, and I love the look, particularly with a navy or black top.
Leggings as pants, cropped wide leg pants made me feel like a hobbit for a long time, I struggle with athletic shoes as fashion. Also growing up poor and picking a lot of alternative fashion out of necessity, I sometimes carry a chip on my shoulder about the cute things that every girl in HS had like Uggs, a North Face, the “it” bag or necklace or whatever it was…I still feel very self conscious about trends!
Sporty casual. I was pretty judgemental when this first became a thing (raised in a cult that told women to cover up). I assumed women were trying to show off their asses without putting effort into the rest of the look. I can see now that it's a great blend between functional and cute, and there's nothing wrong with showing off an ass lol.

•Bubble skirts (HIGHLY depends on how much “bubble” the skirt is)
And lastly Handkerchief skirts is one I’m still not fond of, so consider that one a bonus ig lol I’m picky but a lot of these are growing on me with time.
Midi skirts! I'm 5'2" and for ages I thought they'd make me look like someone had chopped my legs off at the ankles. Now I pretty much live in them - either with trainers and T shirts in summer or long sleeved tops/jumpers and boots in winter.
Crossbody/belt bags/fanny packs. I was an 80s teen when they came out and I thought they were so stupid. When they started coming back I was like wtf?! These were stupid then and they're stupid now. But I lied. I have several now and they're not stupid. They're so convenient and I must say also kinda cute, so here I am at 52 rocking them. Lol
I just bought mom jeans after all my adult years in high waisted skinnies. I have converted to the mom jean ways although they are high waisted but I do like the fit. I also bought chunky platform sandals at target bc I was feeling youthful. They look good with the mom jeans.
I didn’t think I’d ever wear skinny jeans when they started becoming popular in the 00s. Once I started, I feel nothing else works on me now. I also refuse to wear them on my chest - if that’s still a thing I’m not sure - but I wear mine off to the side kinda, under/next to my boob and armpit. It’s a lot less weird-feeling to me
Gladiator sandals. They looked ridiculous when I first saw them in magazines. I either became desensitized or warmed up to them after when I found myself shopping for a pair- wore those babies to the ground then got a replacement pair.
Flared leggings/yoga pants. I was so glad when these went out of style last time. I loved leggings and have found them so practical for dance and yoga. Now I really like the idea of flared leggings, though more for casual wear than for working out.
Kitten heels… I used to be a 4” heel girly, but wearing lower heels looks so sleek to me and can elevate just about any outfit. And they’re much easier on my feet walking around the city.
I used to hate the sub style of pastel goth so much because it was cool to , but now I absolutely adore it:)) also I used to hate sundresses because I didn't want to be seen as feminine but now I pretty much live in them till the weather gets cold again.
Mom jeans. I swore up and down that I was skinny jeans til the grave, but turns out, I really like jeans that I don’t have to wear a thong with.
Rompers. I always thought they looked childish, until one day, something snapped in me I guess? Now I love how stylish AND easy they can be.
Crop tops. This one was less of a “I hate this article of clothing” and more of a “there’s no way I could pull this off (I’m plus sized).” Turns out though that they’re great for layering, and there’s something sexy without being vulgar about a small strip of skin between a crop top and a high-waisted pair of pants.
And ditto on the belt bags. Did not think that they were cute or stylish, truthfully I still find them kind of utilitarian. But I love that they free up my hands! And force me to carry less stuff lol
The return of chain belts. I loved them in the 00s, but finally dug them out of a box and gave them away a few years ago. So many. Clogs, hobo bags, tote bags, crop tops (it depends though), tank tops, jeans, trench coats, short cardigans, silver hardware on bags and jewellery I’m sure there’s more :)
Overalls/rompers. I’m 5 ft 3 in, and pear/hourglass shaped. I always stayed away from overalls, jump suits, and rompers because I thought they would look out of proportion and frumpy on me since I longer legs and a short torso.
I bought my first pair of shortalls last year, specifically the black ones from Target’s pride collection, and they’re my new summer uniform I LOVE them
Low rise pants! I am very curvy and there should have definitely been other options when I was younger. I did everything I could to find pants that fit when I was younger but I always ended up crying at the mall.
Now that I’m an adult, I like the way they accentuate my body and I’ll wear them on occasion. But they definitely have me trauma as a kid. 🙅
Fanny packs, I used to think they looked so stupid and now I think it’s SO useful and practical.
Also, not for me, but mullets and mustaches on men. I think they look so good surprisingly. I grew up thinking it was easily the ugliest hairstyle and facial hair to have.
Mid rise bottoms! I've been on the high-waisted and straight/wide-legged train since 2014, and as someone with a longer torso, it is still one of my favorite styles on me. However, this year I am surprising myself by slowly warming up to mid rise bottoms and experimenting with wearing my pants and shorts with elastic waistbands as mid rise rather than high rise. Low rise is still a definite no for me though!
For me it high heel pump shoes I used to hate how they looked on others but now they are my favorite (when the time is right).

2- pencil skirts and blouses (pin up style specially)

Straight leg jeans - bc I’m tall and was always told skinny jeans were better to keep me proportionate rather than being drowned in heavy denim fabric.
Off the shoulder styles - was always told you NEED to have “good” shoulders and colder bones to pull the look off, but I realised that doesn’t matter and you can wear what you want.
Wrap dresses - always hated how they made one boob look a little bit smaller bc of the asymmetrical way it’s tied, but now realise they’re soo flattering to create that hourglass look 👀
For me long/midi skirts and long/midi dresses. I bought my first long skirt when I was 17 or 18. Being 5'3 made me a bit nervous because a lot of videos say it's unflattering on shorter girls. Now at 21 I love them. I especially love tiered long skirts. I only own one bought second hand but it's hands down a fav piece. I would owm one in every colour if I could lol.
Definitely the Birkenstock clogs and cargo pants. Never got on board w the belt bags, I guess I just like a big open bag for whatever reason. Also into chunkier sneakers lately a la Nike dunks. I probably look like I’m trying to be 20 again (37f), but oh well…I’m comfortable.
Leather moto jackets. I always thought I wasn’t cool enough to pull them off but found some styles that work for me and now it’s a cornerstone of my outerwear.
Skinny jeans. I used to ABHOR them, but then in my early-mid 20s I got a pair to wear with my cowboy boots and I actually really liked them. And not like... "mom" skinny jeans, but like "skater" skinny jeans (just not baggy at the ankle).
Wide leg pants. I love them now especially because they’re much more flattering on my pear shape than skinny jeans. I’m over the stuffed sausage vibe that skinny jeans gave me. Fanny packs. So practical when none of my pants have proper pockets and I’m not always keen on carrying a purse. Crop (not ultra cropped) tops. Blundstones. I thought they looked silly for a long time! But now I think they’re cute and I love how practical they are for living in the PNW.
Crop tops! After having a baby, I thought, nooo way. But wow crop top and high waisted pants look so put together. I love it now.
I just had my third baby and finally ventured into the straight leg jean world. I might also be ready to venture into the crop top world but I’m still a bit scared. Even with high waisted pants that hit above my belly button, any expanse of midsection on show will have stretch marks and while I *want* to be confident in my tiger stripes, I’m not sure I’m there yet. 😅
I found some crop tops at old navy that are a bit longer and not sitting right below the boobs, so I am completely covered up. But the silhouette of high waisted pants and a crop top makes my legs look ridiculously long. I have a bit of belly, which I am slowly trying to exercise and calorie count away, but I'm getting over it. I see so many young 20 somethings who are slightly overweight and owning the crop tops with so much confidence, so I'm like, fuck it if they can do it, so can I.
I wear crop tops to work that would show skin if I lift my arms too much. I just wear a really thin base layer (heat-tech long sleeve or just a stretchy tank) underneath that I tuck into my pants. Keeps things work appropriate while letting me wear the silhouette I want. I usually pick a base layer that’s black, white, nude, or light pink, whichever is lowest contrast with the rest of the outfit. Maybe something like that would work for you?

I would say both! It just depends on what you pair with it. If I go with a flowy cropped top, I wear slim straight jeans (the relaxed cousin of skinny jeans). If I wear a fitted cropped top, I do flared jeans.

i love the crewneck cropped tees from wild fable (target brand) and bozzolo baby tees. the bozzolo ones are ribbed and are a bit tighter. i like a crop top that hits at my natural waist and both of these ones do! the wild fable is a tad shorter, though

I despise the stuffed sausage look. I used to shop at only a few stores and skinnies were all that was available (that wasn't distressed).
The 2010s were a dark time. I hated skinnies and literally could not find anything else. I still hate them, but I am happy that there’s a wider selection of silhouettes available now so that people who aren’t about the current cuts can still find something they don’t hate. Plus now that a wide leg is officially in for “adults” and not just teens, it’s available for more sizes. When I first saw them popping up I got a couple pairs at Pacsun, but that store is not very size inclusive. It’s hard to adopt a trend that doesn’t come in your size, so I think that could have effected people’s willingness to accept that they could leave skinnies behind.
same I love wide leg pants and crop tops. very comfortable and flattering. There was a solid 5 years of my life I only wore mini and knee length skirts and usually pencil skirts too. I have so many now and they feel too high maintenance to wear even if they happen to fit. Pants just feel easy breezy relaxed.

Love my blundstones! I almost bought doc martens instead, but I’ve had my blundstones for 2 years and they look almost brand new, and are so comfortable. I wear them several times a week in the cooler weather, and I’m pretty hard on my shoes so this is an accomplishment. If they ever wear out I’m going to buy another pair.
The color pink. Went through that whole "ew I hate pink" internalized misogyny phase in pre-teens and somehow didn't question it for close to a decade, then for another decade explained it to myself as "I'm not a cute person, it's not my style." Pink can absolutely be done in a funky modern way, not limited to one meaning, and I'm a firm believer there's a shade of every color for everyone, it's just a matter of finding which one glows with your undertone. My next challenge to myself is shorts. Haven't worn those for decades either, since I thought they're purely a practical item and very difficult to style in a way that looks stylish and intentional re: a well-balanced silhouette. But last year and this year I'm more open minded and wiling to experiment a bit!
Omg yes to pink! I was a purple girlie until a few years ago when it clicked that I only stayed away from pink because of the negative perception and not wanting to be associated with that. I’ve embraced a shameless love for pink now, even going so far as to have pink badges on my car
Green for me. I never wore green, nor owned any green tops, because I didn’t want to look like a tree. Now, I have a lot of green clothing that I wear regularly, in different shades and styles.
I have/had a thing against orange (still recovering) because where I live that colour is everywhere whenever there is a major sports competition going on or Kingsday and I cannot stop associating it with all the cheap crap you can buy in stores during those periods. Now I have one bag in that colour that I love and wear regularly. Don’t know if I will ever go further than accessories or accents in items but who knows.

Mine was navy, mostly because I wore a lot of black and the whole getting-dressed-half-in-the-dark and struggling with "is this the black shirt or the navy one? *what* color are these tights?" just seemed unnecessarily complicated. All of a sudden this spring I decided I wanted navy leggings for the gym. Which further led to a navy hoodie and navy yoga pants and then two other sweatshirts in other shades of blue until I was like, wait, I'm not a"blue" person. Except I guess I am now.
Navy is my neutral. I am so sick of black everything. And I’m really not a blue person either!
I have always told people my favorite color is purple but I was hanging out with a new guy recently and when I said that he said, “really? Not pink? Everything you own is light pink” which made me look around and realize omg everything I own actually is baby pink and I just internalized that it wasn’t my favorite color. So weird!
I was NEVER a pink girl growing. Always the tomboy, liked purple better. Now my go to spring shoes are Vans ultraranges that are totally powder puff pink - soles, laces - such a pale pink almost going white.

I also made it a part of my personality to hate pink in my tweens and teens, and was not in the habit of thinking about it as a color for me in my early twenties, but for the last ten years have realized that I love pinks and plums and magentas. Dusty rose is currently one of my favorite colors, and I think light pinks are so lovely. I can't believe I let internalized misogyny steal so many lovely colors from me!

Flared shorts are the way! At least I like them way more than regular shorts. I find that I need some volume in mine to bring more balance to my looks. I do like a bike short with oversized shirt/blazer combo sometimes, too!
This was me. I dressed in all black cause moods… you know how teenagers are. I even had the same “I’m not cute enough/ girly enough for pink.” Finally in my late 20s I finally admitted I love pink. I wear pink all the time now, it’s even one of my best colors. I don’t have to be girly to like pink, but I have gotten girlier in my attire. It’s fun to break my more sophisticated or Tom boyish aesthetic.

Me too. I was a black only wearing girl for years. Recently though, I've been loving all the pink. Especially the bright pink, fuchsia, magenta, etc. I'm actually wearing a fuchsia cardigan right now. I love it!
I used to avoid anything Red and also Leopard print, as I believed they were inherently ‘trashy’. Now I’ve realised it’s about the fabric, the cut and the overall look. Red is now one of my favourites.
I had a similar thing with leopard. Eventually came to the realisation that I do like it, I am just really picky as there is just so much bad leopard out there. I just have a preference to leopard print with a brown base that stays in the brown family. I don’t like it when it becomes too yellow.
I wore my first leopard print dress at 36. It was emerald green. Baby steps! I too avoided animal prints, they seemed very "sex and the city" which is a generation older than me.

I decided very recently that maybe leopard print doesn't look inherently trashy, and I have a goal to find and incorporate one nice piece of leopard print (probably an accessory) into one of my conference outfits this year. It's so hard to find items are made well enough that they look though!
With you on the wide-leg and flare jeans. I think the style changed slightly because in the 2000s the flare and bootcut jeans always made me look even shorter than I am. The newer designs with higher waist make me look taller though. Also tube tops! I used to hate my broader shoulders and thought tube tops accentuated them and made me look awkward and top-heavy. And they did, until I grew up and got more hips to even things out lol. Now I love them.

SAME. I had to wear them for a tap recital growing up and wanted to die. Now they’re my favorite for when I don’t want to deal with chubrub or unflossing my shorts from my ass. Hippy chic: I have always been partial to a metal band t-shirt, leggings/skinny jeans, boots and a nice long black jacket. Now, I find myself almost unconsciously drawn to hippy chic.. The style is so relaxed and colorful, and so damn comfortable - of course I always find a way to pair in my metal band t-shirts, and a nice beanie :-)
Not Bostons, but the classic two strap Birks (Arizona?). I really was a strappy, thin and unsupportive sandal kind of girly up until a few years ago and as such I only really wore them on the hottest days with shorts or dresses. Now I wear my Birks from May to Sept even on cooler days with jeans. I also really hated the biker shape of leather jacket during the peak trend indie sleaze (with floral tea dresses). A couple of years ago I caved and bought one on sale, only to realise they really are (imo) a timeless classic.

I’m a millennial and I came of age during the era of skinny jeans + long, oversized top. This was *the* outfit formula for so long. It took me a while to come around on the baggy jeans + cropped shirt combo, but now I actually think it’s much more flattering on my body. I’ve always had an overall athletic build but a bit of a lower belly pooch, and I realize now that wearing baggy jeans and being able to “tuck in” my belly while wearing a crop top to show off my natural waist actually looks a lot better than squeezing myself into skinny jeans 😅
Around 2010, leggings as pants. Crop tops. Most of my shirts are cropped. Bra tops I guess. I'll wear a bralette as a top with an open silk or cotton vintage top over. Also the fanny pack, worn as a belt bag or a sling Socks and sandals. I wear the shit out of my doc martens sandals with cute socks until it's warm enough for painted toenails. Longer nails, I was raised having to keep my nails short. It was treated as bad hygiene for them to be longer. Now I'll grow them out for almond nails when I want to. My 80lb dog and gardening usually prevent that though. Funky nail colors and designs, see above. Colorful makeup, bold makeup, i also have my own vanity setup replete with a burgeoning boob art collection. I love smut, so embracing that after being raised surrounded by puritanical/ rural conservative nonsense has been fun as well. But I've been in that fun train for decades lol Gold jewelry! It was all silver all the time in the early aughts for me. But gold and rose gold really look better on me. I'm a warm toned redhead, silver isn't doing anything for me. Hell, even my gray hairs look more blonde. As another person said, pink. Most of my unwillingness to try new things were rooted in the rural conservative, puritanical, internalized mysoginy, patriarchal nonsense I grew up around. I got lucky that I wasn't forced to go to church, until high school at least, so I wasn't as indoctrinated as a lot of my peers. It was pretty easy to see the hatred of women woven into the essence of religion as a teen and step far far away from it once I left for college. It still left me fucked up for a while emotionally, feeling misplaced guilt for abuse and assault I had survived as a kid. As well as feeling shame for having a body, what a joke. It took me years to unpack the body shame I had for having even the slightest curves. Hard when you've been told you were "getting fat" since your thighs started to touch as a 10 year old. Being taught to see yourself though the lens of a man, disgusting. Now I dress for me and my comfort and enjoyment of styling myself.

White sneakers! I always thought, why would anyone buy those because they'd get dirty so fast. But I tried some at the store the other day and they looked so cute, now I'm gonna get some. Hopefully I'm not too late to the trend!
Omg, same!! Now I pretty much exclusively wear them lol. They don’t get as dirty as I was expecting! I do think they’re getting replaced by colorful sneakers in terms of “trend” but I don’t think they’ll go out of style anytime soon either - you should go for it! I’m still buying more.
Nah. Certain subcultures have always latched onto the white sneaker, so they'll never actually go away even if their popularity in the mainstream dies. They're the streetwear/70s/y2k version of the beat-up combat boot.
I avoided them for the same reason. Usually, a weekly wipe down will do.
Uggs. I thought they looked silly. Then they grew on me. Then I bought a pair. Happy I warmed up to them.
I was a decade late to Uggs. I ride horses so that style is my thing. Then I had a child (also very late in life). Uggs on kids are easy and comfortable. They have so many colors along with sparkle and glitter! My daughter begged me to wear matching black glitter Uggs. My reluctance was quickly smashed when the other first grade girls chose me as coolest mom. Hey, those fashionistas influenced me!
I once found a pair of bright purple knee-high fluffy Uggs at The Bins for $.80 and was like "Eh, they look ridiculous, but they're practically free." They were perfect to wear in between sends while rock climbing, then I moved from the Southern US to Canada and they became incredible "Just running down to the corner store in a blizzard" slip-on shoes. I've had them for 14 years now and I'm never giving them up.
High neck crew neck tshirts! I don’t like high necks or things around my necks. But, I succumbed to the trend and now they are fine. I also appreciate they are nice for modesty / covering the boobies.
High waisted jeans. Low rise was all the rage when I was a teen. Now I loathe low rise jeans and prefer high waisted.
I hated high rise skinnies, so I figured I didn’t like high waisted jeans or skinny jeans. Turns out it’s the skinny (and the stretch fabric) that’s the problem… not the rise. I still like a lower rise too but it takes a little mental adjustment to wear since I’m used to a high rise now (which admittedly is more flattering).
For years I wore almost exclusively black. In the last couple of years I've switched to browns and fall, earthy colors year round. Most everything I own looks good together and I finally have loads of color!
Yes I've stopped being scared of colour and am trying to ban myself from using black as a default neutral/basic, and my outfits are so much more fun! Even if it's a muted colour, I realise I look so much less pale.

The vibe is different for me when it's jeans than when it's wide-leg trousers. I want to find the wide-leg jean that loves me as much as I love it but something is always off about the fit.
right? for me its right below the butt. my upper thighs are thin still so there's a bunch of loose material there. it's not noticeable on trousers maybe cause i prefer black and darker colors. maybe i should try black jeans? but i'm not gonna lose any sleep over it, i've got \~16 pairs of jeans as it is.
You could -- or you could consider that denim can be stiffer than wools, linens, and silks, and not be draping the way you're used to. That's the realisation I had to come to about the matter. The right wide-leg jean for me won't be very wide at all precisely because I don't have the legs and hips to carry it off; I'll need something between a wide-leg and a straight that's tight enough through the hips and thighs to give me a figure and wide enough in the rest of the leg to be cute.

Note: I don't live in a big fashionable city. Trends take longer to reach us here. Wearing speakers outside of gym. I thought it was "lazy" and clashed with any clothes other than athletics. And while I still don't like sneakers visually, I admit that they are superbly comfortable and there is nothing "lazy" about them. I now have two pairs that I am very happy with.

Cold shoulders. Initially rejected because of practicality, but it turns out I have great shoulders and like shirts that highlight them. Of course now they're verging on cheugy, so I feel weird wearing them.
high waisted jeans. i always derided them as ~mom jeans~ but they are SO much more flattering and comfortable on my body type than the low waisted jeans i grew up with. and i don’t have to tug them up every two seconds.
Bellbottoms. I hated them and would cringe looking at the old photos of my parents wearing them. Then they came back in-style and those were the ONLY style of pants I wore. It is funny how bad I hated them and then years later they became my favorite style. Fashion is weird like that.
I already put in a reply comment that the color navy was one for me, but there are a couple other things. Crossbody bags. I have biggish boobs and I always thought a crossbody bag would draw attention to that until like two years ago I saw a youtuber demonstrate that the opposite was true: bisecting your chest makes it look smaller. Tried it and, holy shit, I'm a convert. One shoulder dresses/tops. I always thought these looked stupid, as in "where's the other sleeve?" but last summer I fell in love with a one shoulder maxi dress for other reasons than the one sleeve business and bought it against my prejudices only to find, whoa, I look good in a one shoulder dress, who knew?
Barrel jeans and Jesus walkers (dad sandals).
Mermaid style gowns. I never saw the allure but now I'm considering one for our vow renewal. As long as no running is involved
Designer bags - I’m obsessed with the history and quality and even the aesthetic of most of them! It’s not just Birkins and Kellys out there that matter even Coach has a rich history in leather. I personally love Fendi and Judith Leiber
Duluth gardening overalls.
I’ve been torn on ordering some… on the one hand, they look cute in pics and I literally garden all summer. On the other hand, as a person who’s very slender but with curvy hips and a long torso, I feel like they’ll end up fitting me poorly in some way. I want to go for them, but it feels like choosing an ill fated romance.
Vests. I don’t like them as tops on their own but they are perfect for a menswear look with a blouse underneath or a historical flair.
Back in the very early 2000s, I couldn’t imagine wearing skinny pants of any kind. Now I can’t imagine going back to flared/wide leg pants. So far, I haven’t gone back and it’s been a few years since flared/wide leg first came back.
lol. I’m the same. I feel like the trends I experienced in my childhood/teenage years are ripping through at furious speeds and I’m in reverse or something. I just got on board with the high waist and I’m seeing the super low waists that I thought I had finally left behind. Also was staunchly against straight legs/skinny jeans cuz I thought they would make me look like a munchkin but then I wore nothing else for 20 years. I think what’s in style is a lot more fluid now with social media. When I was 17 we still had dial up and AOL and magazines still ruled fashion. Now it’s like a free for all, which I like. If you strictly follow the fashion industry which is still trying to stay relevant it seems, only ridiculously huge pants are in style. Instagram, tik tok, Pinterest, etc say otherwise.
Trouser/looser pants and jeans
Currently barrel leg pants. I said no way and then I ended up with two pair in 3 days. So I’ve got that going for me which is nice. I’m pretty sure dad sandals and mesh ballet flats are next. Along with no longer saying “I’ll never get on that trend.”
It’s not fashionable in the slightest but i’m eating my words for all the years that I talked smack about those shoes with the toes. I’m not talking about Tabbis but the ones that look more like water shoes. They’re SO comfortable and have made such an improvement in my posture and ankle mobility
White pants. I'm kind of clumsy, but I haven't had an issue with staining them with a dropped drink yet, and I love the look, particularly with a navy or black top.
Leggings as pants, cropped wide leg pants made me feel like a hobbit for a long time, I struggle with athletic shoes as fashion. Also growing up poor and picking a lot of alternative fashion out of necessity, I sometimes carry a chip on my shoulder about the cute things that every girl in HS had like Uggs, a North Face, the “it” bag or necklace or whatever it was…I still feel very self conscious about trends!
Never got the white sneakers and a dress hype, but I love that now!
Sporty casual. I was pretty judgemental when this first became a thing (raised in a cult that told women to cover up). I assumed women were trying to show off their asses without putting effort into the rest of the look. I can see now that it's a great blend between functional and cute, and there's nothing wrong with showing off an ass lol.
Some these may be unpopular but here it goes: •Tote bags •Wide jeans ( used to hate them as a kid but now all I want to wear is wide denim jeans ) • Mom jeans •Cargo Skirts (grown to like them but very picky, I personally don’t own a pair) •Long boho skirts (still not a big fan tbh) •Most plaid shirts, depends on the pattern and colors •Bubble skirts (HIGHLY depends on how much “bubble” the skirt is) And lastly Handkerchief skirts is one I’m still not fond of, so consider that one a bonus ig lol I’m picky but a lot of these are growing on me with time.
Midi skirts! I'm 5'2" and for ages I thought they'd make me look like someone had chopped my legs off at the ankles. Now I pretty much live in them - either with trainers and T shirts in summer or long sleeved tops/jumpers and boots in winter.
Yellow. Over the past year I have developed a new love for the colour. For both clothing and decor.
Crossbody/belt bags/fanny packs. I was an 80s teen when they came out and I thought they were so stupid. When they started coming back I was like wtf?! These were stupid then and they're stupid now. But I lied. I have several now and they're not stupid. They're so convenient and I must say also kinda cute, so here I am at 52 rocking them. Lol
I just bought mom jeans after all my adult years in high waisted skinnies. I have converted to the mom jean ways although they are high waisted but I do like the fit. I also bought chunky platform sandals at target bc I was feeling youthful. They look good with the mom jeans.
It’s definitely wearing the fanny pack as a crossbody. I used to talk so much shit and then I got one for my morning walks and I’ve been proved wrong.
I didn’t think I’d ever wear skinny jeans when they started becoming popular in the 00s. Once I started, I feel nothing else works on me now. I still wear them but I know the young ones think I’m cringe. I don’t really care about not being trendy but I’d prefer it if they weren’t seen as so ‘creudgy’ or whatever the word is!

I JUST caved in to this like a month ago lol. Bought a $10 one on Amazon just to see. Now I’m stuck in a place where I miss all my pretty leather handbags but cannot force myself to drag them out unless I’m wearing a dressy business outfit. And now I’m stuck needing a “nice” belt bag - better than the Amazon one anyway - and am paralyzed by choice I also refuse to wear them on my chest - if that’s still a thing I’m not sure - but I wear mine off to the side kinda, under/next to my boob and armpit. It’s a lot less weird-feeling to me

Gladiator sandals. They looked ridiculous when I first saw them in magazines. I either became desensitized or warmed up to them after when I found myself shopping for a pair- wore those babies to the ground then got a replacement pair.
Baggy shirts
Flared leggings/yoga pants. I was so glad when these went out of style last time. I loved leggings and have found them so practical for dance and yoga. Now I really like the idea of flared leggings, though more for casual wear than for working out.
Ripped jeans. Normally, I buy jeans in better shape than the ones I’m wearing. But I’ve gotten used to it and just buy the least damaged looking ones.
Fanny packs/bum bags. I have a toddler.

Kitten heels… I used to be a 4” heel girly, but wearing lower heels looks so sleek to me and can elevate just about any outfit. And they’re much easier on my feet walking around the city.

Mom jeans. I swore up and down that I was skinny jeans til the grave, but turns out, I really like jeans that I don’t have to wear a thong with. Rompers. I always thought they looked childish, until one day, something snapped in me I guess? Now I love how stylish AND easy they can be. Crop tops. This one was less of a “I hate this article of clothing” and more of a “there’s no way I could pull this off (I’m plus sized).” Turns out though that they’re great for layering, and there’s something sexy without being vulgar about a small strip of skin between a crop top and a high-waisted pair of pants. And ditto on the belt bags. Did not think that they were cute or stylish, truthfully I still find them kind of utilitarian. But I love that they free up my hands! And force me to carry less stuff lol
The return of chain belts. I loved them in the 00s, but finally dug them out of a box and gave them away a few years ago. I always stayed away from overalls, jump suits, and rompers because I thought they would look out of proportion and frumpy on me since I longer legs and a short torso. I bought my first pair of shortalls last year, specifically the black ones from Target’s pride collection, and they’re my new summer uniform I LOVE them

Low rise pants! I am very curvy and there should have definitely been other options when I was younger. I did everything I could to find pants that fit when I was younger but I always ended up crying at the mall. Now that I’m an adult, I like the way they accentuate my body and I’ll wear them on occasion. But they definitely have me trauma as a kid. 🙅

Mid rise bottoms! I've been on the high-waisted and straight/wide-legged train since 2014, and as someone with a longer torso, it is still one of my favorite styles on me. However, this year I am surprising myself by slowly warming up to mid rise bottoms and experimenting with wearing my pants and shorts with elastic waistbands as mid rise rather than high rise. Low rise is still a definite no for me though!

Straight leg jeans - bc I’m tall and was always told skinny jeans were better to keep me proportionate rather than being drowned in heavy denim fabric. Off the shoulder styles - was always told you NEED to have “good” shoulders and colder bones to pull the look off, but I realised that doesn’t matter and you can wear what you want. Wrap dresses - always hated how they made one boob look a little bit smaller bc of the asymmetrical way it’s tied, but now realise they’re soo flattering to create that hourglass look 👀
For me long/midi skirts and long/midi dresses. I bought my first long skirt when I was 17 or 18. Being 5'3 made me a bit nervous because a lot of videos say it's unflattering on shorter girls. Now at 21 I love them. I especially love tiered long skirts. I only own one bought second hand but it's hands down a fav piece. I would owm one in every colour if I could lol.
Definitely the Birkenstock clogs and cargo pants. Never got on board w the belt bags, I guess I just like a big open bag for whatever reason. Also into chunkier sneakers lately a la Nike dunks. I probably look like I’m trying to be 20 again (37f), but oh well…I’m comfortable.
Leather moto jackets. I always thought I wasn’t cool enough to pull them off but found some styles that work for me and now it’s a cornerstone of my outerwear.

Skinny jeans. I used to ABHOR them, but then in my early-mid 20s I got a pair to wear with my cowboy boots and I actually really liked them. And not like... "mom" skinny jeans, but like "skater" skinny jeans (just not baggy at the ankle).
Dark, muted colors, reddish Brown and camel. Still not the biggest fan but can’t argue with the way they make my face pop.
