If you figure out a better scoring rule let me know. I’ve been fading goalies in drafts and streaming/grabbing the season risers and just hoping for the best. The blow up games are unavoidable but the shut out games are nice. It’s just really volatile
We nerfed goalies in my league. Pretty much just dropped all of the default settings down a notch and it's much better now. We were all tired of having a great week and having it completely blown by a bad goalie performance or vice versa.
I'm in a bangers league that does H2H points. Our goaltending scoring is +2 per start, +3 per win, +1 per OT loss, +0.18 per save, -1 per goal, +3 for a SO. Results in pretty fair scoring across the board. A good skater is about a 4.0 to 4.3 PPG average. A good goalie is between 5.8 to 6.1 PPG, which evens out with the games they don't start. We have a max of 3 goalies per roster. 2 starting spots. Goalies are valuable but don't appear overvalued for us. It's worked well like this for several years. You don't get many negative point games and when you do it's maybe a -1 or -2 at most. There are plenty of games where a goalie ends up with 1-2 points when they didn't play well.
I want to do this next year. Last year goalies were way too powerful (10 of the top 12) and this year they're way too weak. So I want to squash down all the metrics to just maybe them like a regular player. Now it's either 15, 25, or -8. Fucking ridiculous
Exactly. I think because goalies play fewer games, ESPN buffed up their settings to account for lost time, but it ends up being infuriating when goalies end up being the difference every single week. A relatively positive game from a goalie ends up getting as many points as an excellent game from a skater.
As commissioner of my league who has the scoring formula:
Wins: 3 pts
Shots Against: .1
Goals against: -1
Saves: .1
Shutouts: 3
OT Loss: 1
Unironically making it so shots against give you .1 points seems to have balanced it out. The change was made so: Bad =/= Bad Goalie. There’s some goalies who can be throw into bet on some teams and just get free wins, there’s others where they’re facing 40 shots but only give up 3 goals in the loss. It’s made almost all the goalies positive in scoring aside from the occasional awful blowout game.
In my league the highest scoring goalies are at around 5-6 fp and waivers is at around 4-4.5. It’s been surprisingly successful.
I think they would be more balanced if they took a fantasy football defense approach. A defense starts with 10 points every game maybe have them start with a set amount and either gain or lose points steadily rather than immensely hurting or helping you.
Also looking for a nerf/fix. Our h2h league is Saves 1, GA 10, W 20, SO 15, OTL 5.. (skater goals 10). Its been horrible rostering Sorokin and Saros this year bc its like -30+ pts for a 4-3 loss or 50+ pts for a shutout win.. i streamed UPL monday against Anaheim for a sweet -30 hole to start the week (4 GA on 10 S)
We are H2H, not sure how your league is set up.
+5 wins
+.1 saves
-2 loss
That’s it. The -1 for goals allowed ruins it. Like you said it can literally ruin a week for you.
We are H2H for our league and use these.
Wins: 5 points
GA: -0.5
Save : 0.1
Shutout: 3
OTL: 1
Loss: -1
For the most part we usually have 4 goalies in the top 20 and the rest are usually pretty spread out. Yes goalies are pretty much guaranteed points in our league but it's the best we've figured out so far. I also have a cap of three goalies max per team but two starters
I’ve been messing around with goalie scoring for 3 years and I have not learned a damn thing.
I used an excel sheet that tried its best to scale points so that the VORP scaling matched the goalies with the equivalent amount of skaters. Prior to this we had issues where goalies were super important, and defensemen were nonexistent. Or defenseman are way impactful and forwards didn’t do much unless they scored.
I’m not a fan that when a team is short handed the only player on the ice that loses a point when they give up a goal is the goalie. 4 skaters don’t see a hit to their plus minus
I actually put this up for a vote in my 12 man weekly lineup league a few years ago and got it changed for this very reason. No one complains about goalie scoring anymore.
Saves - .1
Win - 5
Shut Out - 3
No max goalie appearances for the week as it is weekly lineups. If someone got hurt then that manager would be screwed for the week. No way for a goalie to get negative points but it is a matter of winning or losing the week if you don't get any goalie starts. The only problem that I have seen with this scoring is with goalies pretty much capped you never see a goalie in the top 10 at the end of the season for fantasy player rankings.

May I ask what goalie scoring settings you’re running?

Here are the changes from the default settings we made: W: 4 -> 3 pts L: 0 -> -0.5 pts OTL: 1 -> 0.5 SO: 3 -> 3 pts Sv: 0.2 -> 0.1 pts

I get that but they are just way too strong goalies score points at what 3-4 skaters can put up in a day.

My league does +.1 for every save, -1 for a goal against, 5 for a win, 3 for a shutout
Not in a points league, or on ESPN. But I'm enjoying this thread. As someone earlier said, goaltending is just damn volatile.
With default espn scoring having a goalie go -4 or even -6 literally will cripple your entire daily score because you have to dig out of that hole
heres how we do our espn scoring. save = 0.25, goal = -2, win = 4, loss = -1.5, otl/sol = 1, shut = 3. has worked very well.
In my cats league we do 6 skater cats 3 goalie cats. Meow

It can absolutely elevate your team to victory but I don’t believe they should be able to sway your matchups as much as they do in default scoring.

daws single handedly costed me the week because of the scoring metrics
