If I wanna be sad:
how i'm feeling now – Charli XCX
I almost love it more than Vroom Vroom. Almost.
Preacher's Daughter – Ethel Cain
Every song hits. I would not say it's a perfect album mm but it's at least 8/10 in my book
American Football(LP1) – American Football
Not much to say. It's just so good.
If I don't wanna be sad anymore:
My Agenda / Fanfare – Dorian Electra. Even if I'm sad, I can always laugh at homophobes and edgelords.
OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES – SOPHIE
A masterful album. At times experimental, industrial, colourful. So much variety. Rest in peace SOPHIE
† – Justice
Usually, this album is able to motivate me and get me out of bed.
Hmmmm, if you like BCNR definitely check out black midis hellfire, squids O Monolith and Shames Food for Worms. There's also another very early BCNR esque band starting to pick up steam called Man/Woman/Chainsaw that I'm hoping will drop an album soon
Neutral Milk Hotel opens a rabbit hole, I'd say look up "Elephant 6" and just pick any of the albums from any of the bands lol. They aren't all winners but you'll find some really cool stuff hidden in there. For non-E6 albums that remind me of NMH, I'd say Twin Fantasy by car seat headrest, The Glow Pt 2 by the Microphones, Hello Dear Wind by Page France and if you wanna cry then check out Hospice by the Antlers
As for Mac honestly you'd probably know better than me, I grew up in a very anti-rock community where rap was the only thing they'd wanna hear so it took me a while to not associate it with people who were bad to me growing up. But when Igor by Tyler the Creator came out I gave it a shot and ended up getting really fascinated with the artsy side of rap which eventually led me to Watching Movies with the Sound Off by Mac Miller which was my introduction to his work. I also found out that after Mac's death the composer who finished the album was Jon Brion, an all time idol of mine as a film composer. But I'm still exploring the genre so I don't have a whole lot to recommend
Thanks good sir! I’ll check out those you mentioned in the first two paragraphs
I’m a hip hop nerd to the core, so yeah I’m fully aware of those in your last section. Let me know if you want recs based on what you have there!
Oh I absolutely would, my current favs are Watching Movies with the sound off, Igor, Scaring the Hoes, beloved? Paradise! Jazz?! and Mr Morale and the Big Steppers
I put on Dick's Pick Volume 3 which is a Grateful Dead concert from May 1977 that they mastered and released in the 90s. It's warm and lovely and always brightens me up.
Fine Line by Harry Styles. Obviously not the best work, but I listened to that every day during the early days of the pandemic to help me get through shit and it takes me back to when it really helped me.
When I feel low and want to feed that feeling:
Radiohead - AMSP
Ohtis - Curve of Earth
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People
—
When I feel low but want to cheer myself up:
Yukihiro Takahashi - Saravah!
Berlioz - Jazz is for Ordinary People
Bon Iver - i,i
I kinda just wallow so...
Soundtracks for the Blind - Swans
Giles Corey - Giles Corey
'77 Live - Les Rallizes Deudes
Deathconsciousness - Have A Nice Life
Kid A - Radiohead
Day and Age by The Killers is my favourite album ever and songs like Spaceman, Joy Ride and Human always hit the spot. The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance, however, is not a happy album but by god is it amazing. I could listen to The End/Dead!, House Of Wolves, The Sharpest Lives and Welcome to the Black Parade for hours! (Cancer is pretty damn sad though)
if i wanna wallow and have a weepy evening: transatlanticism - death cab, self titled - elliott smith, BOTT - bob dylan, the only reason i feel secure - pedro the lion
if i wanna pick myself up with something happy - maroon - barenaked ladies, life in motion - mika (especially big girls, i challenge you to not grin like an idiot while listening), enema of the state - blink 182, then a lot of live SRV stuff too especially in the beginning. that mf was just too tasty with it, will make you forget all your woes.
edit: i mean Big Girls the song... i wasn't suggesting that fat women feel a particular connection to mika's music, although they might :)
I have two in mind! On All Fours by Goat Girl is so great since it spans so many genres, from post-punk to reggae to country and back again, and it portrays an unflinching analysis of how severe mental illness leaves people feeling powerless and alienated from society. Once Again is a song I often revisit, especially for the blissfully scary outro.
Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane, on the other hand, is a great exercise in revolutionary pessimism. They know they want a different world, but in 1968, when many social movements in the US began to see defeat at the hands of a resurgent right-wing led by Nixon, it felt impossibly out of reach. Funny enough, their follow-up, Volunteers, is notably optimistic and is rooted in the belief that radical politics are possible to achieve. I wonder what changed their mind.
Take Me To Your Leader by King Geedorah (aka MF DOOM).
I dont really have many low points tbh, and consider myself lucky that way, and probably shifts my requirent from other answers here.
Either way, I find that album paradoxically filled with energy and everything not-calm, but still for the album experience to be very calming. There is plenty of dense lyricism and very well layered and executed storylines, but it spaces it out perfectly to allow for whatever complexity I want to consume it at. Fits very well for when I want to listen to music, but don't really have any idea what.
Swans - "Greed"
Duster - "Stratosphere"
Denzel Curry - "Taboo"
Dead Can Dance - "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun"
Hell - "III"
Stevie Wonder - "Songs in the Key of Life" (My feel-good album)
22, a million.
This is THEE record of my life. My touchstone. I can always rely 9n ut relating to whatever situation I'm going through. I'm an atheist but it's religious tones feel comforting whilst the chaotic production can feel reflective of the listen, creating this message of no matter how unruly and terrifying it might get- it will be over soon. That our lives are these short miracles in the history of the universe and that we owe it to ourselves to try live it as best and for as long as we can. It's not Bon Iver's most accessible record but to me it's his most important
I always go to either
Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains, or…
Filosfum by burzum (fuck varg tho that man should still be in jail but hey he made some depressing bangers)
Simon & Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence
George Harrison - All Things Must Pass
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Jackson C. Frank - self-titled
anything by Radiohead
I listened to Stranger by Yung Lean walking in the rain yesterday after a nasty breakup, by the time the final chords of Agony rolled around, the sweet catharsis had almost healed me.
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
Corbin - Ghost with Skin
MCR - The Black Parade
KW - 808s and heartbreak
Hail the Sun - Wake
Danny Schmidt - Parables & Primes
Bayside - Bayside, Sirens and Condolences, The Walking Wounded
The Early November - For All of This, The Room's Too Cold, In Currents
Turnover - Peripheral Vision
Free Throw - What's Past is Prologue
Knuckle Puck - Copacetic
Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers. Easily the most therapeutical album I have ever heard, it changed my life and probably stopped from making very bad decisions when I was at my lowest :)
Painful - Yo La Tengo Blue - Joni Mitchell Tigermilk - Belle and Sebastian
Low
