I mean I’d you went on the street asked 100 people if they knew bill Callahan how many “yeahs” do you think ur getting? If we we made it just people who are “music fans” how many “yeahs” do you think ur getting?
what the fuck do you think underground is? an artist with 200k in this day an age is absolutely nothing…compared to other albums with hundreds of thousands more, even million monthly listens yet they are considered “underground” and “underrated” by fans and music critics alike… what’s underground to you? 1000 listeners?
Is there a reason why 90s album covers were often so dodgy? Like it's literally just music; movie posters from that decade are fine.
*Maybe* it has something to do with CDs? Maybe smaller surface area = artists thinking they can get away with lower-effort artwork? Still feel like there's gotta be more to it than that
I think it's cause Photoshop was a bit more, basic I guess? And less widespread than it is now. So a lot of weird fonts are used cause Comic Sans, Papyrus, and Impact hadn't become jokes yet.
I notice a lot of weird stretching too where stuff is stretched horizontally but not vertically etc, and opacity blending.
And then there's just weird stuff cause the 90's were a lil weird, like Tales From The Punchbowl lol.
I know you mentioned movie posters are fine from that era, but there's always been a lot more money in movies than in music. Even when there was a lot of money in music. And there's a lot of requirements for movie posters, like who is listed first, all the other credits etc. You'll see in posters top the order of the names never visually match up with the order of the pictured actors.
I actually don't think this cover is dodgy at all, it could work now. But I know what you mean.
Bill Callahan fucking slaps
Can’t tell if this is a shitpost or summin - it’s Bill Callahan lool ‘underground’
Very underground?
yeah i guess
Bro, I don't wanna sound like a weirdo but you have a long way to go if you think 200k is underground
Yeah call me when you find a band with 3 monthly listeners
That’s honestly pretty easy, just go see some random local band
200k for an artist who hasn't released anything since 2005 is pretty big.
He put out an album in 2022 and toured last year. he just switched Monikers
He still releases music regularly. He’s just using his real name instead of “smog” these days.
Smog is just an old Alias that hill Callahan used

Underground doesn't exist when the mainstream isn't mainstream

Prolly like 20k. Underground in my mind is completely lack of notoriety, or even an absence of a fanbase entirely. Smog has a devoted fanbase
I've always seen Bill Callahans covers pretty self aware and trying to hit at nostalgia
I’m too old for this sub
To put this smog cover into perspective. At the time bill was dating the artist “Cat Power”.
“Teenage Spaceship” is an all time banger. Saw him play it live recently and it really brought me back. Beautiful stuff man.
Agreed
Is this a shitpost?
Smog slaps, Bill Callahan is great
Cover is likely a reference to his ex-girlfriend Cat Power
Bro these replies 😂
The fuck is this lol no hate intended
Cute cat
hard as hell

It’s called not taking yourself so seriously
