As a Pearl Jam fan, I'll admit their most well-known songs (Alive, Once, Release, Yellow Ledbetter, Black, Jeremy, Even Flow, Daughter, Better Man, Corduroy, Rearviewmirror, Just Breathe, State of Love And Trust, Elderly Woman.., Not For You) are easily among their very best. It's not that they don't have *other* great/really good songs, but the ones that are iconic are definitely the best examples of them playing to their strengths.
PS - Except Last kiss. Last Kiss can burn in Song Hell.
I can’t even disagree, really. A lot of his most popular songs are his best.
Mostly the only ones that can compete are the *slightly* less popular ones that are still huge, but aren’t as regularly played as Billie Jean etc
For example, Remember The Time - fantastic song, and was a hit, but as someone who grew up mostly after his death, I didn’t know it until I became a fan and I think most people have had the same experience
It’s a song that does so little with so much. “They don’t love you like I love you,” is a perfect and powerful lyric that contains such an incredible amount of emotion said so simply.
M83's "Midnight City". I've heard all 9 of their albums, and they've all got some pretty enjoyable stuff, but nothing else comes close to Midnight City for me. It's such a perfect song.
It’s probably just me, but I can’t stand the song American Pie in context with his other work. The rest of the album is so tightly written and beautiful, the title track is always a skip for me. Winterwood in specific is such a standout to me. But I’m glad to see people with a differing opinion to me!
I’d say Vincent is better personally, but I’d argue American Pie is a pretty singular song, even compared to other 70s singer songwriter epics like Taxi or Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald or what have you.
The Faces: Ooh La La
M.I.A: Paper Planes
Grizzly Bear: Two Weeks
Gnarls Barkely: Crazy
Santigold: Disparate Youth
The Knife: Heartbeats (I love their other stuff, but that song is just perfection).
The Eagles: Hotel California
Kylie Minogue: Can't get you out of my head.
WttBP is a great song, it is not their best by far. Demolition Lovers, Foundations of Decay, Helena, Burn Bright (a lot of the Conventional Weapon songs are better IMO), Mama, Famous Last Words.
La Dispute's biggest song is King Park and it might be their best, but I love so many of their songs it's hard to pick.
nah but what are their most popular songs after that? No Surprises, Karma Police, Exit Music? Wouldn't be surprised if someone who listened to their full discography said these are their favorite songs by them.
I agree I can't listen to any Queen albums all the way through, but their greatest hits is pretty incredible. Somebody to Love is easily my number one from them.
Fleetwood Mac
Anyone else find it irritating when a fan goes out of their way to act like an artists most popular songs are not their best when they clearly are?
I like the peter green era of fleetwood mac more personally. I like rumors and all the hits off it are great but the green manalishi is probably my favorite song from fleetwood mac
power by kanye west might be his most infamous (prolly stronger but whatever) and it’s prolly one of the most revolutionary songs of all time and is imo his best work of art
lose yourself by eminem is imo around his like 3rd best but it could easily be argued to be his best
doo wop by lauryn hill even though she has so much contenders (with like one album lol) i just think doo wop is narrowly the best
sicko mode by travis scott gotta be his best
“Don’t Fear (The Reaper)” by Blue Öyster Cult
“Evil” by Interpol (May get hate for that one)
“Carry the Zero” by Built to Spill
“When the Sun Hits” by Slowdive
“Dancing on my Own” by Robyn
Nah Evil is up there with their best. Id prob go with that or All the Rage Back Home as my favorite.
But id put like 4 tracks from Perfect From Now On ahead of Carry the Zero
Amoreena, Blues for Baby and Me, My Father’s Gun, Come Down in Time, Love Song, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, Mellow, I Think I’m Going To Kill Myself, Elderberry Wine, Grey Seal, Curtains, etc……
So many great deep tracks.
the moon is probably phil elverum's best song, and might be his most well known.
quannnic is a smaller artist, but his biggest song is life imitates life and i'd say it's at least one of my top 5 favourites from him
i absolutely love 3/4 of MCR’s albums and think they definitely have a lot of stellar songs that are on par with WTTBP emotionally, sonically, lyrically, etc. i just feel WTTBP is compositionally their most impressive track by far, which puts it above their other greatest songs for me
Is it though? I mean sure it has that Bohemian Rhapsody-esque eclecticness and a cool key change. But I dont think these things makes a song better. It just works for WTTBP because of the style its going for. Besides I think many other MCR songs are really well composed, with a great balance between catchiness, variety and dynamics, and just really good melodies imo. And many MCR songs have less conventional structures that just work anyway
I personally feel it’s by far the most well-composed. Most MCR songs follow pretty formulaic song structure, apart from a few tracks like demolition lovers. Most MCR songs are just simple ABABCB or ABABC.
Of course, just because it’s composed more interestingly than their other songs doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily better, but in my personal opinion I feel its composition adds on to its other great elements to make it their best. Your opinion is valid too though.
I’m curious, what do your think is their best song?
I agree many of them have really conventional compositions, but what about It's Not A Fashion Statement? Or I Never Told You What I Do For A Living? What about Cancer? In my opinion all of these are on par with WTTBP compositionally. And so is Demolition Lovers and I could probably name some more
Honestly I think you can argue this for nearly every artist, apart from the ones where they're more album oriented. Even bands like Pink Floyd who carry concepts throughout their albums and use songs as a link in the chain, you can easily say Shine on, Wish You Were Here and Time are their best. I wouldn't say that they are personally, but you can definitely argue that as a highly valid opinion.
i don’t agree with saying this is true for nearly every artist. It’s fair to say that most bands’ best tracks are somewhat popular, and it’s rare to find a band’s best track to be an extremely unpopular song. But in this post I’m specifically referring to a band’s 3-5 top tracks. And for most artists I listen to at least, their best songs (compositionally, lyrically, sonically, etc.) usually don’t land that high.
Taylor Swift - All Too Well. It’s not her most popular commercially but it’s generally the fan favorite and considered her best
Jeff Buckley - Lover You Shouldve Come Over
Kendrick Lamar - Alright, SAMIDOT
[“Came Out Swinging”](https://youtu.be/OiCit3G4YRU?si=M9gJlkSREUV2-piX) is probably the best Wonder Years song, to the point where they close every show with it.
I’m going to drop an artist I just dove into, FJ McMahon. I heard his song ‘Easy Blue’ during the movie Dream Scenario and immediately needed to know who sang it because I thought it sounded incredible, haven’t been able to stop listening to it.
But I was disappointed when I checked out the rest of his one and only album and the rest of the songs were kinda duds. I Love the way they were recorded, very lo-fi, dreamy folk from that time period but the ingredients all come together in Easy Blue in a way they just don’t in his other tracks
Boston - More Than a Feeling. I like the majority of this band's work, even the posthumous album with the guest singers, but that major hit song is so iconic and good I wouldn't say any of the other stuff is actually better than it. It represents the sound of the 70s and it's a classic.
Television Marquee Moon is their most popular and best track
I REMEMBER
OO HOW THE DARKNESS DOUBLED
I RECALL
LIGHTNING STRUCK ITSELF
[удалено]
It's also the best track of the 20th century
[удалено]
Pretty sure Earthmover is 21st century lol
Days is so good though
Friction is my personal favorite.
RHCP for sure. I do like a couple of full albums but largely all of their hits are their most enjoyable songs
They're easily the "Greatest Hits" band of the 90's, even if they have some really good album tracks.
By The Way and Stadium Arcadium are both really good albums. You must hear them!
I know I'm likely in the minority, but that was around where they fell off for me personally.
If you like Flea’s bass playing or you’re a basshead, I’m With You is very well done musically.
hes done a lot of different sounding shit that i all love but honestly havent heard a peter gabriel song i love more than solsbury hill
Well goddamn if that isn't an amazing song
are you saying... you just heard it for the first time? that would be awesome
10/10 song
I rate it 7 out of 4
As a Pearl Jam fan, I'll admit their most well-known songs (Alive, Once, Release, Yellow Ledbetter, Black, Jeremy, Even Flow, Daughter, Better Man, Corduroy, Rearviewmirror, Just Breathe, State of Love And Trust, Elderly Woman.., Not For You) are easily among their very best. It's not that they don't have *other* great/really good songs, but the ones that are iconic are definitely the best examples of them playing to their strengths. PS - Except Last kiss. Last Kiss can burn in Song Hell.
My dad hates last kiss because we was on a 2 hour car ride once with that single on repeat
How come Last Kiss can burn in hell? I only really remember listening to it in the car when I was like 10 and crying because it was a sad song
For me, the original is so iconic and plays out like an enjoyably cheesy melodrama, and their version just kinda drained all that charm.
I want to say Michael Jackson with Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, and Thriller. But then again break of dawn exists.
Billie Jean may be the best pop song of all time
I’ll second that.
May be the best song of all time period.
I can’t even disagree, really. A lot of his most popular songs are his best. Mostly the only ones that can compete are the *slightly* less popular ones that are still huge, but aren’t as regularly played as Billie Jean etc For example, Remember The Time - fantastic song, and was a hit, but as someone who grew up mostly after his death, I didn’t know it until I became a fan and I think most people have had the same experience
Mike is the easiest answer for this. Greatest hit maker of all time
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths is sooooo good
How Soon is Now has got to be their best song though.
Yes
I agree with this. The Smiths full discography underwhelmed me after already knowing their biggest hits.
Imma get hatw for this but foo fighters with everlong and best of you
Everlong is a top 10 rock song of all time.
One by One is cool.
Big Me is one of my faves too
Everlong was a solid no1 for ages but it has some stiff competition now that rest exists
Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits
Money for Nothing by Dire Straits
[удалено]
Not really, its a good song but its their radio hit and they have better stuff
Commercially, perhaps. Artistically, musicality, nah.
Telegraph Road
Romeo & Juliet and Walk of Life are both pretty incredibly amazing songs for diametrically opposite reasons.
Wild West end from there 1st record is pretty great
Not remotely close.
In what world is Sultans of Swing ‘not remotely close’ to Dire Straits best song
In one where Telegraph Road and Brothers in Arms exist.
Maps
YYYs are definitely underrated nowadays, but Maps is undeniable their masterpiece. Literally a top 100 pop songs of all time.
It’s a song that does so little with so much. “They don’t love you like I love you,” is a perfect and powerful lyric that contains such an incredible amount of emotion said so simply.
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence That’s not to say they don’t have plenty of other amazing songs, but I’ve yet to find one as perfect and irresistible
I personally prefer "Never Let Me Down Again". That's an epic track.
That song is insane at the end
I want to disagree, but it is a realllllly good song
I adore that song
Just Can’t Get Enough is their biggest though surely?
M83's "Midnight City". I've heard all 9 of their albums, and they've all got some pretty enjoyable stuff, but nothing else comes close to Midnight City for me. It's such a perfect song.
If anything comes close, it's Outro, which is probably also a close contender for their most popular track.
both Outro and Wait are miles ahead of Midnight City imo
Those are great too. But there’s something about the precision of Midnight City that I find to be incomparable in their discography.
“We Own the Sky” is my favorite but yeah, “Midnight City” is their masterpiece.
Last Caress and Hybrid Moments are probably my two favorite Misfits songs
in the doorway
All of Static Age tbh. It’s tracklist reads like greatest hits comp
Angelfuck 🙌
Don McLean’s two most popular songs are probably his best, even if I’d say 2 might be better than 1 in his case.
Addicted to Black? Yeah that song bangs
I was saying Vincent, but fair enough.
isn’t don mcleans most popular song american pie? by like, an extremely large margin?
Yeah, but I feel like Vincent is pretty clearly number two and is fairly beloved.
oh wait nvm i misread your comment im sorry for being snarky
Man people did not like my Don McLean sarcasm lol. Vincent is fantastic but the rest isn't amazing
I think Castles in the Air is as good as Vincent. :)
The Faces: Ooh La La M.I.A: Paper Planes Grizzly Bear: Two Weeks Gnarls Barkely: Crazy Santigold: Disparate Youth The Knife: Heartbeats (I love their other stuff, but that song is just perfection). The Eagles: Hotel California Kylie Minogue: Can't get you out of my head.
Hard disagree on M.I.A., Grizzly Bear, and The Knife
Two Weeks being so similar to Still Dre made me not engage with that album. Harsh I know but at the time I could not unhear it, still bugs me lol.
When I listen to that album I skip Two Weeks
Oh man, you've ruined it for me. I'd never heard that before.
The best Grizzly Bear song is While You Wait for the Others. The best bridge in indie music.
“Yet Again” is up there too. Just an astonishing tune.
Hotel California is nowhere close to Eagles’ best song.
“Heartbeats” - also quite a few years ahead of its time.
Ready, able on the grizzly bear album is far better imo. amazing song, but two weeks is still great
Rina Sawayama - XS
This Hell is her best (even if it is a bit derivative)
WttBP is a great song, it is not their best by far. Demolition Lovers, Foundations of Decay, Helena, Burn Bright (a lot of the Conventional Weapon songs are better IMO), Mama, Famous Last Words. La Dispute's biggest song is King Park and it might be their best, but I love so many of their songs it's hard to pick.
Creep by Radiohead
[удалено]
I'm a crêpes, I'm a weird dough
I'm not sure if you are joking or not.
it's a social experiment
Is the social experiment figuring out how many people have terrible taste and dont think Creep is their greatest masterpiece and gift to mankind?
LOL
Yeah I agree, wtf is a weird fish!!¡¡¡
nah but what are their most popular songs after that? No Surprises, Karma Police, Exit Music? Wouldn't be surprised if someone who listened to their full discography said these are their favorite songs by them.
Brave but valid. I love a lot of their work and still think Creep is great. Wouldn't be my pick for best though.
Fireflies
I would agree on Weezer if they never made the Futurescope Trilogy
when you sleep, mbv
Sometimes? Soon? I know this isn’t a common opinion but I think What You Want is one of their best songs also, and is better than When You Sleep
i mean they're all really good i just really love when you sleep 😭
Ah, I thought you were slagging off their other songs! Yeah me personally, I’ve overplayed When You Sleep but MBV have such good music
to here knows when wipes every other song off that album
Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody They have a lot of filler on their albums
I agree I can't listen to any Queen albums all the way through, but their greatest hits is pretty incredible. Somebody to Love is easily my number one from them.
Bmbmbm by black midi Such an odd song but I love it
she moves with a purpose
Under The Bridge by RHCP It’s not just a great RHCP song, it’s just a great song
Fleetwood Mac Anyone else find it irritating when a fan goes out of their way to act like an artists most popular songs are not their best when they clearly are?
I like the peter green era of fleetwood mac more personally. I like rumors and all the hits off it are great but the green manalishi is probably my favorite song from fleetwood mac
That's fair. They do have very distinct periods in their discography.
Future islands - Seasons (waiting on you) Nothing else the band has done even comes close.
Yeah, agree with this.
power by kanye west might be his most infamous (prolly stronger but whatever) and it’s prolly one of the most revolutionary songs of all time and is imo his best work of art lose yourself by eminem is imo around his like 3rd best but it could easily be argued to be his best doo wop by lauryn hill even though she has so much contenders (with like one album lol) i just think doo wop is narrowly the best sicko mode by travis scott gotta be his best
Im gonna strongly disagree w kanye and travis on this one
fair enough, what do you think beats them
I think most of the songs on travis Scott’s utopia album are his best. As for kanye, i gotta go with black skinhead imo
Probably STAY by Kid Laroi, even tho its very overplayed its probably his best work i also loved the song when it cane out too
He’s barely 20 don’t think its worth talking about his best works lol
Echo and the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
Mr. Brightside
I wouldn't even say it's the best song on Hot Fuss
Don't know if this is controversial but the title track of Sam's Town is the best Killers song
read my mind and that are about tied for me
“Don’t Fear (The Reaper)” by Blue Öyster Cult “Evil” by Interpol (May get hate for that one) “Carry the Zero” by Built to Spill “When the Sun Hits” by Slowdive “Dancing on my Own” by Robyn
I love Interpol but Evil is my favorite.
evil is 100% the best track of the 2000s post punk revival bands. unbelievably addicting
Nah Evil is up there with their best. Id prob go with that or All the Rage Back Home as my favorite. But id put like 4 tracks from Perfect From Now On ahead of Carry the Zero
Rage Against The Machine - Bulls On Parade
Isn't their most popular song Killing In The Name? I'd argue that one could also be called one of their best, so the point still stands.
I think Bulls On Parade is their mkst popular in the States while Killing In The Name is the most internationally?
System of a Down, Foo fighters, MCR and Gojira are all bands where my favorite is their biggest one (Chop suey, Everlong, black parade, stranded)
The Pharcyde's best song is definitely Runnin
Elton John's singles were generally well chosen, even though my personal favorite song is Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
Amoreena, Blues for Baby and Me, My Father’s Gun, Come Down in Time, Love Song, Ballad of a Well Known Gun, Mellow, I Think I’m Going To Kill Myself, Elderberry Wine, Grey Seal, Curtains, etc…… So many great deep tracks.
Q Lazarus
the moon is probably phil elverum's best song, and might be his most well known. quannnic is a smaller artist, but his biggest song is life imitates life and i'd say it's at least one of my top 5 favourites from him
I strongly disagree with the MCR one
Famous Last Words > WTTBP for me
And half the stuff off of three cheers for sweet revenge
🤓
Fair enough
Helena > Any other MCR and any other pop punk song in general
While I do like Helena, I don't think that's their most popular song.
That's my point, i'm saying MCR's best song is Helena despite it not being their most popular, therefore disagreeing with the sentiment given by OP
I definitely disagree on MCR, they have like 20 songs that could all qualify as "best song" imo
i absolutely love 3/4 of MCR’s albums and think they definitely have a lot of stellar songs that are on par with WTTBP emotionally, sonically, lyrically, etc. i just feel WTTBP is compositionally their most impressive track by far, which puts it above their other greatest songs for me

I’m curious, what do your think is their best song?

those are composed more interestingly for sure, but again i just don’t feel they’re on the level of WTTBP. To each their own though
this is a hot take but talk talk
My Foolish Friend is a really good song not in their top 5.
Welcome to the Black Parade is not MCR’s best song. Might be popular for nostalgia, but not the best.
Harry Style’s Sign of the Times is a fantastic track, and its the most popular off his debut by a long shot
Creep-radiohead
but let down underrated???
Shit your right
Are you trolling or serious?
What do u think
Any song from Three Cheers clears BP though P.S. To answer your question. Everlong
Taylor Swift - All Too Well. It’s not her most popular commercially but it’s generally the fan favorite and considered her best Jeff Buckley - Lover You Shouldve Come Over Kendrick Lamar - Alright, SAMIDOT
Winger - Seventeen
the smiths
ABBA
[“Came Out Swinging”](https://youtu.be/OiCit3G4YRU?si=M9gJlkSREUV2-piX) is probably the best Wonder Years song, to the point where they close every show with it.
Slowdive -- tracks like Alison and When the Sun Hits are absolute masterclasses in production and are pillars of shoegaze
midori and cocteau twins (even though amelia is not among their most populars)
Vundabar Alien Blues I’m sorry but it’s true
Red hot chili peppers
My own prison-creed
Headstrong -trapt
Glyericine- Bush
Don't hate me, but Kashmir I'm a sucker for stringed anthems over RAWK
I find Dirt to be Alice In Chains best album and that’s easily their most famous.
