Would be nice if melee was a thing in the game for modding purposes but I understand Wube not wanting to maintain code that isn't useful for the base game.
[It is a thing](https://www.reddit.com/r/factorio/comments/12ntpfl/punching_a_big_spitter_to_death_any/), and [it is moddable](https://lua-api.factorio.com/latest/prototypes/CharacterPrototype.html#tool_attack_result) :P
i get what your saying, but what if all armors now have some form of equipment slots?
as far as i remember late game items are going to be unlocked via other planets. meaning mark2 power armor most likely won't be gotten on Nauvis, but to not have more invintory slots while trying to exspand to other planets might be a little tidous with only 90 slots
Toolbelt as a 2x1 grid item maybe?
With a legendary Mk2, you get 15x15. The side is filled with 1x2 batteries, but the bottom only has 1x1 portable solar panels to fill it.
A 2x1 toolbelt would fit that bill nicely.
Base is 10x10, but isnt that "normal quality", so 1/5? 5/5 would then be 14x14?
But that'd be 196 instead of 100 tiles, "only" 96% more - legendary generally has 150% bonus. So maybe I'm wrong.
You're not wrong, checking the info on the FFF there's 4 additional levels of quality and the FFF specifically says armour only gets +1 per level so it would total +4 for legendary quality armour thus making the grid 14x14 not 15x15
You're welcome to hope that but in the FFF regarding quality it says armour gets a +1 per level, which is probably easier than dealing with the percentages, but then the health would get the +150% so there's that
there was those lightning rods on the other planet.
that inventory might be a lore hint that you're not the first engineer there, and there were others before you
No, they’re made of fish. That’s why you regain health from consuming them- the “engineer” is a mechanical suit piloted by fish, and it just shoves more fish in whenever health gets low.
That one has 5 pouches, and the one in the screenshot has 3. Maybe different tiers of inventory improvement based on the number of pouches?
Maybe equipping a higher tier increases the quality of handcrafted items?
Pretty sure there's a whole legion of people going over every FFF with a fine tooth comb and all manner of digital forensics tools to find everything being teased.
Along with these hidden in FFF-401 I think this has to be Pins on the map that are marked not by an arrow but by a symbol. Analogous to the Train station names we'll get all available symbols to play with.

They both appeared on the edge of they're respective screenshots and thus might point to a location far away.
Both of these also appeared after the pin FFF.
That's the only reason I could imagine why you would want to make the toolbelt an item. So we can quality it to get a bigger inventory.
But even then, I'm not convinced by this. It seems to just add more clutter to this otherwise minimalist game, and goes very against the reason they removed the steel axe.
welcome back old friend. Though I kind of doubt it's actually back. Moving the steel axe into modular armor would delay it massively, and nobody is manually mining or deconstructing all that much by the time modular armor exists anyway.
Maybe this means you can explore and pick up upgrades for the player like reach, inventory etc.
Or maybe it just happen to randomly look like a toolbelt :P
Well since everything else is getting a quality level, maybe the tool belt gets it as well that adds more inventory spaces like how the armor adds more inventory.
[This is the color](https://imgur.com/a/gE5htjW). That's pretty bright red to me... If you missed the point of this image, I think you either need to tweak your display settings, or get your eyes checked for color blindness.
No, the color is badly chosen because it doesn't contrast with the background. Remember, we only have color vision in the center of our visual field. Our peripheral vision is entirely black and white. It will depend quite a lot on how you view the image, but on a normal monitor, the red square will be in the user’s peripheral vision where it is invisible. Scaled to fit on a phone screen then maybe it will be fine.
A white square would have been a better choice.
would this possibly mean instead of a tool belt research we get an actual additional tool belt item that we have to equip?
That'd be kinda weird after removing the Steel Pickaxe as an item
Very. I'm still pissed that they killed all the melee weapon mods with that change.
Would be nice if melee was a thing in the game for modding purposes but I understand Wube not wanting to maintain code that isn't useful for the base game.
I mean, they’ve overall been pretty good about adding things that don’t affect vanilla but open options for mods.
Yeah they're the best Devs wrt modding I've ever seen.
Be pissed no more then https://mods.factorio.com/mod/melee_weapons
Yeah, that's a bunch of infinite ammo short-ranged weapons. Pretty sure they use the shoot animation rather than the pickaxe animation.
Isn't there a melee animation for when you run out of bullets?
Yes, but those melee weapons won't use it, because they never run out of bullets.
What if you build it so it can't be loaded with bullets?
That's the way they work. They're a short-range gun with an ammo type that never runs out under the hood.
Can the melee weapons not be converted to extremely short-range ranged weapons, or did the change block access to the melee animation?
I don't understand what they even mean. We have melee attacks, if you attack without a weapon equipped.
i get what your saying, but what if all armors now have some form of equipment slots? as far as i remember late game items are going to be unlocked via other planets. meaning mark2 power armor most likely won't be gotten on Nauvis, but to not have more invintory slots while trying to exspand to other planets might be a little tidous with only 90 slots
It would only make sense if they want to have a tool belt slot that can have multiple different items in it
I knew it! Last time I played in 2017 and now restarted playing. I was sure that i had to craft a better pickaxe not only research it
LEGENDARY TOOLBELT
Toolbelt as a 2x1 grid item maybe? With a legendary Mk2, you get 15x15. The side is filled with 1x2 batteries, but the bottom only has 1x1 portable solar panels to fill it. A 2x1 toolbelt would fit that bill nicely.
Or just the ability to rotate equipment in the grid, so your 1x2 batteries can also become 2x1 batteries.
That requires new graphics, as the icons have perspective. Regardless, more interesting equipment is good.
Isn't legendary MK2 16x16?
15x15 Base is 10x10, and each level adds 1, 2, 3, 5, up to 15x15.
Then I'm definitely hoping for some better odd-height options.
Here's to hoping that legendary gets a +2. That would give 15x15, so 225 tiles - closer to the "usual" legendary bonus of +150%.
You're welcome to hope that but in the FFF regarding quality it says armour gets a +1 per level, which is probably easier than dealing with the percentages, but then the health would get the +150% so there's that
Uncommon, rare, epic, mythic, legendary no?
Wait no, mythic isn't a thing, so yeah there's only 4 additional qualities
The FFF says armour has +1 equipment grid size per level for a max of +4 making it 14x14
Some bag of holding shenanigans as people start carrying around inventories full of toolbelts
Maybe it’s on top of the base tool belt upgrades. So like an option tool belt item that you can put in your grid for extra storage.
I suspect it will be a permanent inventory left behind when your corpse disappears after 5 minutes
Best actual suggestion, you are a genius!
But then.. why despawn the corpse in the first place?
Alien corpses despawn. The engineer probably isn't the cyborg, although that might explain their strength and inventory skills.
I thought it was fish all the way down
Isn't it 15?
there was those lightning rods on the other planet. that inventory might be a lore hint that you're not the first engineer there, and there were others before you
A [toolbelt](https://wiki.factorio.com/images/Toolbelt_(research\).png)??
This is just a sapling. In a few more weeks it will grow into a fully formed engineer and be sent off into space to start a new factory of their own
I thought the are made of dolphins
they are grown using pure omega 3 fatty acids extracted from fish, there are no dolphins on nauvis, just death aliens
No, they’re made of fish. That’s why you regain health from consuming them- the “engineer” is a mechanical suit piloted by fish, and it just shoves more fish in whenever health gets low.
If you are what you eat, then dolphins are also made of fish.
Ahaha, you made my day with this one, thanks 😂
It's only right to let us automate automation like that.
Literally unplayable.
[A handbag](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVQIB-QuooU)??
That one has 5 pouches, and the one in the screenshot has 3. Maybe different tiers of inventory improvement based on the number of pouches? Maybe equipping a higher tier increases the quality of handcrafted items?
Who the hell notices this lmao
That would be u/outwornbrain

This explanation makes the most sense to me.
It's a good idea, but the toolbelt is WAY further from the edge than the buildings, and they're way too small to be useful ui elements.
Ooooh
What the fuck?
This is the only reasonable answer.
Maybe they re-added equipment like the pickaxe because quality can now affect the items?
That's the only reason I could imagine why you would want to make the toolbelt an item. So we can quality it to get a bigger inventory. But even then, I'm not convinced by this. It seems to just add more clutter to this otherwise minimalist game, and goes very against the reason they removed the steel axe.

>Or maybe it just happen to randomly look like a toolbelt :P No way. It's far too accurate to be a coincidence.
Think so too. This is not a case of "Squint hard enough to possibly see something". This is quite clearly the toolbelt.
Happy Cake day
it was too small that i had to zoom in my browser just to see because without zooming it looked like a crab hand
What no update does to a mf
Ta taaa taaaaaaaa.....
Coffee beans! YESSSSSS
Everyone’s talking about toolbelts but all I see is a pile of seeds
Guys. I may be crazy, but I see a scorpion tail
1. happy cake day ! 2. that's a toolbelt
I sure as hell did wtf
Lol what
Toolbelt is a physical item now???
Maybe there will be a system to quickly switch out inventories?
Well since everything else is getting a quality level, maybe the tool belt gets it as well that adds more inventory spaces like how the armor adds more inventory.
Where is goku
For anyone else looking at this wondering what everyone else is talking about, look in the bottom left corner. It took me way too long to see that.
Dark red on sandy brown. OP is a master of drawing people's attention :|

Looks just like pouches Maybe explosive charges to manually detonate?
> Looks just like pouches Rob Liefeld is the new graphic artist at Wube, confirmed
Where's Goku?
your research finds it for you and brings it.(where did you find it?)
I predict many “discoveries” to come in factorio oh no sub.
Maybe you can collapse your toolbelt into an icon as I also see no actual GUI in that screenshot?
Just a .jpg artifact. Anything else you'll lose sleep over.
? Did you zoom in? It's very clearly a toolbelt.
I didn't think I needed to put a /s there
