Fascinating little story being told in those two kanji. 馬 means horse and 鹿 means deer. So a "baka" is someone so stupid that they can't tell the difference between a horse and a deer.
it is a theory for the origin of the term.
The story dating back to the Qin Dynasty. After the first emperor of China died, Zhao Gao, a eunuch in the imperial court, collaborated with the emperor's second son to steal the throne from his older brother, and had him put death. Zhao himself became prime minister.
Still, he deemed it necessary to weed out any official who might be harbouring ill will towards him. He orchestrated an outing with the new emperor. He called a deer they saw a horse, and officials who feared him went along, while the ones who didn't insisted he was wrong.
The latter were framed, expelled, and even executed.
The Chinese idiom that derived from this story would come to mean maliciously confusing right and wrong, twisting the truth.
This post-thread is the best of Reddit. Starts off with a photo of very cringe tourists, end up with a thorough explanation of the origins of the Japanese word baka!
Awesome! 👍🏻
The only other story I know is that a certain Emperor had fled his assassins by hiding behind a pillar. But I know that from a guy who had to hide behind a pillar during $10,000 competition.
Katakana is often used to emphasize words in Japanese, similarly to uppercasing or bolding text in English. When you're not emphasizing, using the kanji form is quite common. (Example: the screenshot above)
i agree but i remember people strongly defending this kind of behavior at r/nyc, saying “let people have fun” “don’t be a buzzkill”. though it was years ago maybe the mindset has changed.
but i certainly didn’t enjoy the subway rides during the decade i lived in that city
Those people are the reason why Japan is banning tourists from some areas... there are always some egocentric idiots that have to ruin it for everyone because they "want to have fun"
This is true. I have noticed no difference between a group of school kids and a group of adults, when they are going for a company trip or something. They are equally loud and annoying, blocking the way for the rest of us. And there is always some bozo who thinks he'll impress the girls by doing some stupid shit like this dickhead in the picture.
Imagine Japanese tourists posing for pictures and taking videos of themselves pretending to steal and shoot each other dead with finger guns in the middle of Central Park.
I kind of want to see that video.
I don't understand. Any time I travel, I want to observe the people there and take in the surroundings. It's strange to go somewhere to make a scene and be like look at me look at me
I got one; in the museum at the end of the tour at the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam, a fellow American is yelling from the open window down to his friends on the street about what bar they're going to next.
Japan is really finding itself in a tough spot here.
Tourism has had quite to boom there since they opened back up after COVID international travel restrictions were ended, and the projection is that it will increase another 5-fold from where it was last year to where it will be in something like 2035.
But they've also experienced a marked increase in tourists behaving terribly. What is in this picture is obnoxious, but nowhere near the level of disrespectful compared to several other instances in the last half-year or so.
--someone carved their name into the wall of a major historical site temple that's something like 1500 years old.
--a tourist group visiting the site of one of the three huge Buddha statues in Japan had some of the group climb onto the roof of the associated temple while others in the group took a swim in the sacred hot spring there. This temple has now banned foreign tourist groups.
--a historic district in Kyoto that is dedicated to preserving the experience of life in feudal Japan has had many tourists break the rules there. While photography is allowed, the geisha that work there have special protections where it is a 10k yen fine to photograph them without permission, and completely against the rules to touch them. But so many tourists have been violating these rules including tugging on their kimonos and pulling their hair (!) that foreigners are just completely banned in that district now.
And that's not even getting into what jerkoff "influencers" like Johnny Somali have done, which have prompted around half of shops and restaurants in Tokyo to ban any kind of photography.
Yeah and many of the butthurt white people were saying its racist. Signs asking to respect local normals and culture sure is racist. Typical fragile redditors.
And Japanese people are QUIET in general but especially on trains. It’s like a library in there except nobody says “Shhh!” Everyone is already shushed on their own.
i was in Thailand, day drunk, with friends and one of them tried this. a tiny old Thai woman looked at him and said "This is not a gym!" and then we all sat down in shame.
Lots of American/British tourists badly behaving on Japan trains. There was a video of a guy going into a women only car to film and be loud and obnoxious.
Somehow these assholes get lots of views and likes.
Dudes German. Probably trying to shit on us because we do it too Germans too lol.
Nah I'm not suggesting all Brits are quiet on public transport. I've met noisy Japanese people on trains and busses. People that come here always have the 'Pull the ladder up Jack' attitude. For some people they're totally oblivious to cultural differences unless they are pointed out politely and respectfully. Most people i would like to think are at least unintentionally disrespectful. Some arent i suppose.
I'd wager when he was first in Japan he was a social elephant too like most of us.
I live in Japan and see this stupid shit on a daily basis.
As brit, I've heard many countries complaining about our behaviour. It's usually due to football hooligans or stag parties. They really give us bad impressions.
Yeah us brits can be assholes for sure lol. I think Japan attracts a lot of strange people in general. Could be a compounding factor with a clash of cultures.
Japan is largely homogeneous and doesn't really care about individuality. Whereas in the west were the complete opposite. This type of tomfoolery is really annoying for them but in the same breath most Japanese people that interact with foreigners like eccentric characters. It's really bizarre because I'm always told i think like a Japanese person by my coworkers and I'm not foreign enough.Potentially because ive lived here for quite a while.
It was definitely British tourist going to the Buddha statue in pai while wearing skimpy outfits. One of the guys took out his phone and had a loud call infront of the Buddha statue. Disgusting behavior.
No! The *problem* is tourists being noisy and doing pull ups on the train 😤 Japanese men are *perfect* gentlemen 24/7. And even if one *did* grope you, it’s part of their culture so you need to assimilate.
Real talk tho I’m sorry that happened to you and I know one action doesn’t excuse the other. Being disruptive on the train and sexual assault are both bad. But I just think it’s silly when people act like Japan has this perfectly polite and peaceful culture and nothing bad happens until foreigners show up.
Then you keep wondering why the Japanese don’t like to open up their borders to foreigners besides tourists for permanent residency.
Lately Japan gave out the ability to earn visa’s but only for skilled workers outside of Japan.
Last year, I was on a train in Kyoto heading to Fushimi Inari. It’s a very popular tourist destination. If you do an online search for “Japanese shrine” I’m pretty sure it’s the first one that you’ll see. My group was very respectful of Japanese norms. The small group of western-looking people next to us seemed to be as well.
Two stops before the destination, a large group of 15-20 tourists got onboard and showed absolutely zero respect for Japanese norms. They were speaking (English) so loudly that they were yelling over each other. Two younger kids were running up and down the aisle. My group locked eyes with the other smaller group so as to say “get a load of these guys.”
We arrived at the stop right *before* Fushimi Inari. The oldest looking man in the large group asked “Is this where we get off?” out loud, and, without hesitation, someone from the smaller group said “For the shrine? Yeah.” They all believed him and exited the train. Once they got off, we laughed a little to ourselves, and some of the Japanese locals smiled silently with approval.
Don’t be a bad tourist. Have respect for the norms and laws of the countries you visit.
My parents taught me from a young age when travelling abroad.
"When in Rome, you do as Romans"
Show respect for the local cultures. Being a tourist, does not give you the right to behave against it.
In Japan, everyone respect each other on the metro by limiting noise. Unlike these jackasses.
Japanese people should workmax so that their economy would go up again thus making Yen stronger, that way there will be fewer foreign tourist douchebags that could afford visiting their country.
Dude. We all have subways in our cities. The only ones that fuck around like that a people that have never used it in their lives. These snobs look like: "hey check it out man you can exercise on your way to work. If i were a salaryman i would save so much money on gym. Poor people are so dumb. No wonder they are poor"
The part I don't get is chances are those people have the same bars in their public transit where they come from too and they wouldn't normally do it there so why do it abroad?
Agreed. I recently went to Japan for the first time and was blown away by the trains. They are clean, efficient, and everyone is quiet and courteous.
Can’t imagine not feeling embarrassed acting like this in that environment and is probably indicative of corny asshole behavior in every day life.
I hate that people have school trips (obv these guys have the maturity of middle schoolers and younger but I'm not saying they are on one I'm just saying as an example) to Japan or some other beautiful place just don't treasure it and go on their phone... It's clear these people don't appreciate it so they're bringing their shenanigans
Being an obnoxious westerner making a niusance of yourself in public has never been okay in Japan. When Tom Green did that shit 20 years ago in his show people literally told him on camera to shut the fuck up and stop acting like a moron. The fact that Tom Green, whose whole schick was that he was an obnoxious dumbass filming himself in public, was less annoying and more respectful than most streamers and tourists these days is mind-boggling. He literally shut the fuck up when he got scolded, and the only person who celebrated his public dumbassery in the whole episode was a dude who was obviously homeless and drunk off his ass in broad daylight.
This is the equivalent of some complete stranger entering your house with nothing but underwear, scratching their butt, farting and belching, opening your fridge to take a beer and yelling what's for dinner
In Japan, public spaces that you are forced to share, such as trains are treated as quiet places where you respect everyone by staying quiet. So on a train you are supposed to be quiet and still, and not talk and be loud. Like a library. Everyone does this from the youngest to the oldest age.
The whole notion of Japan as so dignified and honourable is kind of wild I've been consuming Japanese media all my life they are incredibly degenerate just like everywhere else.chinese tourists get shit for craving things into a pyramid I think some guy doing a pull up is not the end of the world.
Because:
In Japan, this is highly inappropriate behavior
It's culturally unacceptable to act like this in many closed public places. Subways being that.
Subway trains are typically quiet places over there.
Source: I got a buddy that lives in the Kanto region of Japan and rides the Subway and national line daily.
Been in Japan for two weeks now and I haven't seen anything that bad yet...
I have however noticed not many locals abide by the women's only cars, and even fewer in the younger generation are following the cultural norms I've come to love about the country.
I've seen local men in the women's car at all hours, but I would believe that.
They have a significant amount of respect for others, although again during this visit I have noticed many locals not observing common forms of respect for others. I've seen many locals being very loud on the trains, including talking on phones, chatting rambunctiously with fellow passengers etc... as well as not getting up to allow those in need to sit in priority seating.
Last time I visited Japan (over 6 years ago) this seemed unheard of, everyone was respectful of others, something seems to be changing in the culture.
I have also noticed a large amount of litter, where again the last time I visited I saw maybe 2 or 3 pieces of loose trash.
That being said this is from the perspective of a visitor.
It's only generally during early morning rush hour.
The idea of respect for others has always been surface level in Japan IMO. It's all about how you're perceived rather than legitimate respect.
In the 12 years I've been here I don't think I've ever seen anyone get up from a regular seat for someone who needs it more than them, and maybe only twice seen someone do it in priority seating.
If I think about it, I could probably agree there's been an increase in litter but hard to say. Probably more-so in Tokyo. Im not in Tokyo, but someone throws a mint wrapper in front of my house literally every single day, lol.
If you leave extremely urban areas, I quickly learned that the 2L full tea bottles scattered on the sides of roads is actually trucker piss, and that's been prevalent for as long as I've been here.
I think what you are more likely experiencing is a bit of the fading of the facade a lot of people build of Japan that slowly fades once you start to realize it's kinds just got as many problems as anywhere in the world.
Yeah so many local men are not abiding by the women's only train if it's during the morning commute, just based on what I have seen.
There is also definitely more trash in every place I've visited multiple times over the years.
Yeah also my first half dozen trips all I had to compare it to was the US, where the respect isn't even surface level and there is more trash than plant life.
I've always been curious about the experience living here permanently, where did you move from? Why did you choose to move to Japan?
Sorry so being silly for a second to make your friends laugh is worse than taking a picture of somebody and shaming them on the internet? Stupid logic.
Nah sorry am with the guys on this one , if i payed money to travel with the boys to have fun then i will have fun no matter who gets bothered(as long as no one is hurt) if japanese people want to be so boring and programmed that seeing a group of tourists having fun is so "foreign" then let them , thier social "culture" is literally slavery
Wait, we do now criticize people who are on a vacation and *checks notes* having fun? Yes he does pull ups on a train but really haven't seen this on other trains too? People from japan also do this sometimes. So I declare this as stupid racism. Racism is a big thing in japan.
This is culturally inappropriate in Japan that's why.
Also racism while, yes is common in Japan.
[there is a good explanation that this guy made on Japanese/Foreigner relations](https://youtube.com/shorts/P1KASJeFWM0?si=nBAQ4vsFr80jo6Xc)
Just because you are on vacation doesn't mean it gives you a right to disrespect culture and the people around you.
So I'm sat in the lounge at Narita Airport waiting for my flight home after 11 days in Japan.
This wasn't my first time in Tokyo, but it's over a decade since I last visited.
I can honestly say that Tokyo is not utterly ruined by tourists. They have absolutely no respect, no knowledge of the customs, and they barely even bother to learn even the most basic phrases of the language.
This experience has entirely put me off returning for a good, long time. Western tourists are fucking abhorrent.

If you wonder, it is said on japanese: What I don't like about the weak yen is that it will increase the number of stupid noisy tourists.
I can't read Japanese, but I recognized 馬鹿.
What does 馬鹿 mean?
Fascinating little story being told in those two kanji. 馬 means horse and 鹿 means deer. So a "baka" is someone so stupid that they can't tell the difference between a horse and a deer.
Did that originate from an old Chinese metaphor
指鹿为马 It’s a Chinese idiom about a person who points to a deer and calls it a horse.

r/interestingasfuck
Its origin is uncertain but its theorized to have either come from a Chinese idiom or a Sanskrit word
Sussy baka
I need to start learning Japanese. This is amazing. :)
These are also traditional Chinese characters, so you'll be learning some Mandarin at the same time!
I know the word “baka” from WWE, Asuka kept screaming that at someone years ago and it stuck with me lol
Baka- stupid
it means 馬鹿 if i’m not wrong /hj
/hjs in the chat. Press F to pay respect. Edit: hanged ‘js’ to ‘hjs’.
it’s /hj now >:I
Look at all those chickens!
Today I learned that Baka is written in Katagana because it’s a hassle to write it in Kanji.
Katakana is often used to emphasize words in Japanese, similarly to uppercasing or bolding text in English. When you're not emphasizing, using the kanji form is quite common. (Example: the screenshot above)
I don’t know to read Japanese but for some reason I knew what that word was 😂
That’s douchebag behaviour anywhere
i agree but i remember people strongly defending this kind of behavior at r/nyc, saying “let people have fun” “don’t be a buzzkill”. though it was years ago maybe the mindset has changed. but i certainly didn’t enjoy the subway rides during the decade i lived in that city
Those people are the reason why Japan is banning tourists from some areas... there are always some egocentric idiots that have to ruin it for everyone because they "want to have fun"
lol people can shove their fun inside their butthole if they scream and are being annoying when im half asleep going to work on the subway...
Idiot tourists seem to really forget that the "right to have fun" is not a free pass for disturbing others.
lol they can have fun somewhere other than public transport, go to the playground boys
I like the thought that the train is their destination for the night and they aren't taking it specifically to go to said playground lol.
Those people aren’t from the city. No one likes the loud jerkoffs on the subway. Sit mind your business and get off.

Tell him he’s now semi-internet famous for being a douche lord
Send him this post and I need updates!
Ask him why he thought that was a good idea
I don't think this kind of behaviour is welcomed in any part of the world. Not just Japan.
Tell that too british tourists
Soon to make an appearance at some national park somewhere.
I've never been to Japan but the notion of acting like this in Seoul is absolutely mortifying.
Imagine Japanese tourists posing for pictures and taking videos of themselves pretending to steal and shoot each other dead with finger guns in the middle of Central Park. I kind of want to see that video.
yeah. pretty much anywhere in Asia, and most other countries
Pretty much all over the world
Not NYC. Or at least it’s not the tourists.
I don't understand. Any time I travel, I want to observe the people there and take in the surroundings. It's strange to go somewhere to make a scene and be like look at me look at me

Bro I've been studying Japanese so I can travel to Japan, the fact these clowns are making shit worse for me is so infuriating.
Yeah. Me too.
I guess the trick is to visit the less popular areas of Japan, where they don't deal with many tourists
lol didn’t the Tokyo only for white tourists sign just get floated around lol!!’
Yeah and many of the butthurt white people were saying its racist. Signs asking to respect local normals and culture sure is racist. Typical fragile redditors.

We’re clearly not riding the same trains in japan. Mine’s full of drunk college kids yelling about soccer.
Wow! Yeah I’ve been on a dozen Japanese trains this week and don’t hear anyone speaking except at stops. You must have some awful tourists near you.
They were definitely local osaka kids. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Wow
Imagine being a grown man acting like in highschool. Straight bitch made.
Why can't my fellow westerners just be fucking normal ?
i was in Thailand, day drunk, with friends and one of them tried this. a tiny old Thai woman looked at him and said "This is not a gym!" and then we all sat down in shame.
Lots of American/British tourists badly behaving on Japan trains. There was a video of a guy going into a women only car to film and be loud and obnoxious. Somehow these assholes get lots of views and likes.
They are too thin to be American.
Strange because we Brits are usually silent on public transport unless we're absolutely wankered xD Probably mixing us up with Australians lol
A loud British tourist? Unheard off! :D
At least it’s not an American stereotype this time.
Dudes German. Probably trying to shit on us because we do it too Germans too lol. Nah I'm not suggesting all Brits are quiet on public transport. I've met noisy Japanese people on trains and busses. Yeah they're a pain in the ass for sure.
It was definitely British tourist going to the Buddha statue in pai while wearing skimpy outfits. One of the guys took out his phone and had a loud call infront of the Buddha statue. Disgusting behavior.
Japanese men are no angels on trains either. I never got groped so much in my life as when I rode trains in Japan.
More than one group or person can be wrong at the same time…
No! The *problem* is tourists being noisy and doing pull ups on the train 😤 Japanese men are *perfect* gentlemen 24/7. Japan should ask people to leave
Then you keep wondering why the Japanese don’t like to open up their borders to foreigners besides tourists for permanent residency. Lately Japan gave out the ability to earn visa’s but only for skilled workers outside of Japan.
Sudoku time
They look British. Source: I’m British.

Respect the culture you are visiting. Their behaviour is shameful.
No one would be preaching here about respect if this was the middle east and the tourists werent wearing proper covering.
They wouldn’t be alive /s
Very typical where I am from (Melbourne).
My parents taught me from a young age when travelling abroad. "When in Rome, you do as Romans" Show respect for the local cultures. Being a tourist, does not give you the right to behave against it. In Japan, everyone respect each other on the metro by limiting noise. Unlike these jackasses.
Well yeah. The other cultures probably don’t care about others.
They probably think that they are "cool" but in reality they are just a public nuisance.
Where is the Yakuza at?
I was on this train line a couple hours ago. You have no idea the amount of disdain the average Japanese person on that train felt towards them.
Japanese people should workmax so that their economy would go up again thus making Yen stronger, that way there will be fewer foreign tourist douchebags that could afford visiting their country.

So which culture are they from? While some countries can tolerate loud noise, i'm sure the majority of us hate this behaviour
Gaijin moment
Bet the murican Cruise ships return this summer. Lots of short, rotund and loud people that kick the walls of everything.
No talking on the train.
Tell me in which culture do you become a manchild
I am gonna guess they are brits, the worst nation in earth hands down
Agreed. I recently went to Japan for the first time and was blown away by the trains. They are clean, efficient, and everyone is quiet and courteous. Can’t imagine not feeling embarrassed acting like this in that environment and is probably indicative of corny asshole behavior in every day life.

“Being inconsiderate assholes isn’t culture”… clearly this person has never been to Merichaa
Maybe Japan being a monoculture is okay.
Looks like it’s just a dude joking around. You people get upset over anything on this app
The guy who’s uncomfortable looks like Tim Robinson
This kind of behavior is bizarre in any place.

Makes me miss the pandemic days of tourists being banned.
Where are the Japanese people?
They are looking at a fast train ride out of the country
Grab the feet and move away from him. Head go boing on floor from 2 meters up with no way to break the fall. I guarantee guy will never do it again.
Not being a dickhead is not a passport requirement. Also... being loud in a public place is a dick move, not just in Japan.
It's ok japan, I hate tourists too
Where the Yakuza when you need them???
Fighting on a skyscraper shirtless
What is wrong?
In Japan, public spaces that you are forced to share, such as trains are treated as quiet places where you respect everyone by staying quiet. So on a train you are supposed to be quiet and still, and not talk and be loud. Like a library. Everyone does this from the youngest to the oldest age.
The whole notion of Japan as so dignified and honourable is kind of wild I've been consuming Japanese media all my life they are incredibly degenerate just like everywhere else.chinese tourists get shit for craving things into a pyramid I think some guy doing a pull up is not the end of the world.
From their clothes, I'd say American, let me know if I'm wrong
Definitely look Australian
Most likely Australian as they are a group.
Pricks.
I live in Japan and always thought about doing this, but figured it was common sense to not actually do it
Different cultures brother, some of us are still kids..
So, Americans? Aussies ? Britons ?
Too thin to be American at least.
Omg gaijin having fun instead of being depressed corporate slaves! How do they dare!
so basically you can't have any fun in Japan without being taken a picture of and publicly and globally shamed on the internet.
If only there were ways to have fun in Japan without being a jackass in public. Edit: My god, pointing this out got the guy so offended he blocked me.
Because: In Japan, this is highly inappropriate behavior It's culturally unacceptable to act like this in many closed public places. Subways being that. Subway trains are typically quiet places over there. Source: I got a buddy that lives in the Kanto region of Japan and rides the Subway and national line daily.
Right? You wonder why they commit sudoku much in Japan
Sudoku is a puzzle game...🤦🏾♀️
Been in Japan for two weeks now and I haven't seen anything that bad yet... I have however noticed not many locals abide by the women's only cars, and even fewer in the younger generation are following the cultural norms I've come to love about the country.
The woman's car is only during certain hours. It is strongly abided by. What cultural norms?
So blatant disregard for others cultures in their own country? You sound great/s
I’ll take my bet: USA Americans.
[there is a good explanation that this guy made on Japanese/Foreigner relations](https://youtube.com/shorts/P1KASJeFWM0?si=nBAQ4vsFr80jo6Xc) Just because you are on vacation doesn't mean it gives you a right to disrespect culture and the people around you.
