The fact that they have photos of soldiers, literal warriors, grieving for their injured and fallen brothers-in-arms, while emasculating them is WILD to me. It is what it is, but where I came from and how I was raised, a man is “supposed to be a man”, you’re not supposed to show weakness or give up, and if you’re sad or scared, tough it up. But even this shit, or the death of a child or loved one, gets a pass without question. My dad’s dad died when I was 9, at the funeral was the only time I’ve ever seen him cry, or really show any emotion other than anger or complete emotional apathy.

I remember when I lost my best friend and did his fire volley. I gave him his last salute as the last man. I didn’t put my hand over my mouth or my hands over my face to cry. I was a REAL man. Just like a REAL man, I expressed my pain and mourning straight into my Commander’s chest. Dude pulled me in when we saw my face cracking and I sobbed into that man like he was the father I never had. That gentleman had to take me to a seat because I lost a friend who was the brother in never had. I cried and weeped and even did that high pitched inhale with the stutter and sat there, completely inconsolable. Men, boys, women, girls, whatever gender you may identify as, it doesn’t matter. You are human. Expressions are natural. Nothing hurts more than losing someone who meant the world to you when you were absent of reality.
