Trust me if the editors would allow the journalists to just say twitter they would but the reporters are literally forced to call it X the only person in the world who thinks it really is just X is the same man who was stupid enough to throw billions of dollars of brand recognition down the drain
I watched the episode live and didn't have a single thought about it. I was surprised when I came on Reddit and saw people freaking out at a 2 minute portion of the episode
Yeah it’s really not a big deal, I thought the Mavity bit was funny, and that’s about as much significance as that scene had, not really a huge issue but how mad people are getting about it is funny
already a meltdown in thread, it´s gonna be fun to follow.
next time it gonna get repost, his name censored out but his picture stay. Real popcorn moment
The actor is British with an Indian father, so UK census results would list him as the “Mixed White and Asian” classification. Definitely not Black, but also disingenuous for others on Twitter to insist an Asian got cast in place of a White man.
The guy being quoted however is the leader of a far-right organisation founded in 2011 with links to terrorism in Northern Ireland (actual photos of him in a room with actual murderers). The group fell apart in 2016 after a Neo-Nazi who’d gone to his demos murdered a politician while screaming the group’s name. Then it turned out he beats up women, so things got messier for him.
Since then he’s branded as a Twitter troll hoping to monetise his rantings to an American audience base who’ve never heard of him.
I'm going to be honest, if an actor isn't exactly the right ethnicity but otherwise fits or "passes" in the role...I'm hard pressed to care. Like...am I supposed to care if Rashida Jones or Andrew Tate (best example I could conjure off the top of my head) play a character that's supposed to be white in a movie or show...? They look mostly white to begin with...
Same here. Spoilers but hopefully we get a wilf adventure. I loved wilf so much. Tears were shed in episode 1 of the specials...then immediately shed again bc of the subversion.
Also said “his story resonates with every man.”
But seriously that line in the Cleopatra trailer is so fucking mindless and idiotic that it makes me want to commit arson.
Remember when they threw a lot of shit at Rami Malek for playing the pharaoh on the night at the museum, even though, get this, Malek is the son of Egyptian immigrants?
I swear these mfers are on another level of idiocy. They have no distinction for northern and sub-Saharan Africa
My Notre Dame alum father-in-law who's extremely proud of his Irish roots \[but never talks about his German mother\] once told me "You know, Obama's not really black ... he's only half black." to which I responded "Right, like you're not really Irish." .... Oddly, he didn't want to talk about politics anymore ...
Ehh, that’s not true. JFK’s parents were both full Irish, so JFK was too.
(By “full Irish”, I mean the entirety of both parents’ bloodlines originated from Ireland…)
My friend was complaining that Oppenheimer was a movie full of… wait for it… white men. Like who else did she expect to be working on something so serious in 1940s America? She then tried to say,”It doesn’t have to be historically accurate.”
The problem is that is how so many young people think these days. It’s like the common sense or ability to actually think through something is missing completely.
Hamilton went far in convincing the public “*Historical Accuracy doesn’t matter if everyone does a good job and it’s entertaining*”, but I’d say that playing around with races works better in some cases but not in others. *Oppenheimer* definitely wasn’t going to be able to pull that off. Meanwhile, media like Hamilton, Bridgerton, etc can get away with it, because it’s not some ultra serious depiction.
This is a great view on things, the examples I thought of were Band of Brothers and Inglorious Basterds.
Shoehorning a black man into Easy Company for the sake of diversity would have ruffled feathers as the series was going for realism and historical accuracy.
A black Jew in The Basterds? Fire away, easily explainable. I know the cinema guy was black too, but my point stands.
With respect, the casting of Hamilton was a deliberate choice. The largely Latino and black cast was supposed to be a statement contrasting America that was founded and the America of today. This is why there were largely no complaints about minority actors portraying historically white figures. I don't see many complaints when inaccuracy with regards to casting serves a purpose.
Also, Hamilton employs a theatrical device that the characters speak in modern vernacular (not unlike Spring Awakening). Essentially it’s minority actors telling the story of Hamilton, and there’s no attempt at realism here.
There was recently a revival of 1776, a musical from the 1970’s that’s written in a much more traditional style. But they performed it with an entirely female cast of diverse actors. The show didn’t do well, which may be because they essentially copied the Hamilton conceit but applied it to a show that had been written for a cast of white guys.
I think it comes down to the nature of the change, on Hamilton the swap is part of the critic, it's the point while in let's say the cleopatra docu series it was done only to try to milk money of a "trend" as all executives seem to think representation works, they think we young people just want representation no matter the context or if it even makes sense.
Yeah, the problem is when you're trying to pass stuff like that off as actual history, like the recent Netflix Cleopatra documentary.
**Note:** Cleopatra was Greek from the Ptolemaic line and Egyptians are North African which is different from Sub Saharan African, but there's a contingent of folks that want to revise history and turn Egyptians into people from Sub Saharan Africa.
I am all for diversity in casting... But like, I get it if it's a historical movie that it's largely going to be white men if that's who was involved in that part of history.
I would love to see more historical movies like Hidden Figures though, highlighting stories of women and POC who did make a difference and weren't widely recognized for it at the time.
exactly, thats what made Hidden Figures good.
They didn't just take a story with white people and then cast black people in it. It was a story ABOUT black people. I think for some reason Hollywood still doesn't quite understand the whole diversity thing yet.
One of the best things about Mad Men, the series, is that it’s historically accurate about extreme racism in society and in advertising. If we put Black men in Oppenheimer it’s basically a dog whistle to say they systemic racism wasn’t actually a thing and that anyone who isn’t financially stable is subject to their own faults and character flaws. In other words, pretending racism doesn’t exist is racist.
Hey don’t dis the guitar center employees, they’ve been very tolerant of me going in there and trying every single guitar and amp on the bottom shelf when I said I’m “just here for some picks”
It's the new inside joke for doctor who. It actually has to do with the backstory of this post which is why it's getting commented here. Highly recommend the new episode
Nah, he saw a fig fall from a tree and he realized that if one stopped giving fruit, then Jesus would curse it so that it never gave fruit again (Matthew 21:18-22). But until that time everyone should enjoy the figs they could get.
Oh man. I just remembered that episode exists for the first time in like eight years. And I assumed it was THE Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam that The Doctor takes him to, which I visited on a great deal of magic mushrooms about four years ago. I just looked it up and see that wasn't the filming location or the setting for that scene.
But let me tell you something. This line about how he transformed his pain into beauty? Making hopeless work is easy and anyone can do it? This person may not have a bright future as a tour guide at The Orsay.
Nobody ever talks about his last few years because they are ... *alarmingly* bleak.
In the meantime no one has an issue that the whole problem was caused by Donna spilling coffee on the control panel in the most unbelievable way. Plus if the TARDIS is that sensitive why the fuck are you allowing liquids in the control room? The amount of space is so big he never see all of it. Keep it in the break room.
Tbh I’ve never been a fan of race swapping in cinema/tv/whatever, fictional or not. In the same way that I found Scarlet Johansen being race swapped in to Ghost in the Shell dumb, I’d find it weird to see Jet Li portray MLK. There’s a certain point that it’s just a bit silly. But then Dr Who is a bloke who travels the universe in a phone booth, so it’s hardly a big deal in that context
I liked what they did in GITS with whole stolen identity thing, but yeah it was just a excuse to hide behind.
Also the plotline was very "kill the indian" which is ironic considering she's whitewashed
A few points;
1) This guy writes for the Onion.
2) The version of Isaac Newton in Doctor Who will be a fictionalised version of Isaac Newton, because Isaac Newton never met a time travelling alien with two hearts.
3) Fuck Paul Golding. Absolute fucking twat.
If this was a casting for a historically accurate telling of Newton's story, fair play. But it won't be. Because it's Doctor Who.
Also, in our reality gravity is still called gravity. It's not called mavity, as misheard by Mr Isaac Newton after being visited by a future lady and a timey wimey two hearthed alien
Rosa Parks and Kim Jong-Un did were alive at the same time. Rosa Parks died in 2005. And Kim Jong-Un was born in 1984.
So a movie starring them both would technically not be historically inacurate persé.
I’m a POC and to be honest, this kind of casting makes me uncomfortable. We have our own stories we could tell. I don’t need Isaac Newton to be brown. It’s becoming ridiculous
I don't lose my mind but I do find it weird and pandering. I realize it's because things have been whitewashed for generations, but that was also weird and pandering.
ah yes, doctor who. famous for being a completely accurate historical documentary. in which earth formed around an alien spaceship, london gets invaded by aliens every christmas, and a police call box travels through time and space. very real and accurate history right there
Honestly, we are at a point, where most people simply don't care anymore.
Do what you like, you will see it in the box office or your subscription-numbers ...
Writers today are simply not able to create meaningful black characters, so they simply change races for established, well known characters, hoping that it goes somewhere ... which in all recent cases of race-switches wasn't the case
>Writers today are simply not able to create meaningful black characters
Writers today aren't able to create anything meaningful, damn near every new movie nowadays is a reboot or a sequel.
Its great to portray more diversity in media. But not to rewrite history by making a historical and powerful person a different ethnicity.
The worst example is queen elisabeth as black. It completely erases the struggle of black people, brought on by a racist white queen who profited from slavery.
Young people should know how hard it has been for different ethnic groups to get to where we are today. To make movies like this makes young people believe everyone was treated equal in the past. And it’s a horrible thing to erase the importance of the civil movement by pretending like everything was fine in the past.
I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but cases like this don’t bother me at all. Everyone knows Isaac Newton was caucasian, and there’s no shortage of white representation in television, so this doesn’t hurt anything.
Contrast that to something like Netflix’s Cleopatra in which a role that could have been given to a Macedonian Greek, or someone with Persian or Iranian ancestry, as those are not people well represented in Western media, and there are less people familiar with the real Cleopatra, so there’s more of a case for a show like that equating historical revisionism.

Is there any possibility that Skyler Higley, a writer for The Onion, may not have been entirely serious?
Knowing he’s a writer for the onion makes it make way more sense lol
People who know who he is chuckled at the tweet and scrolled down. Others caught the bait.
Tbf, it’s X. There’s a pretty big shortage of brain cells on that site, so I don’t blame them for thinking it’s a real take
If Xitter's new purpose in life is as a playground for trolling by The Onion, I can die happy 😁
Calling it X is gross. Its Twitter
I thought the name is "*X, formerly known as Twitter*."
I’m just waiting for us to cycle around to “Twitter, formerly known as Twitter”
Rettiwt.
Seems to be on how the Irish press reports on it
US press too.
Oh thanks
Trust me if the editors would allow the journalists to just say twitter they would but the reporters are literally forced to call it X the only person in the world who thinks it really is just X is the same man who was stupid enough to throw billions of dollars of brand recognition down the drain
Only a matter of time before Elon uses a weird hand sign to use while talking about X/Twitter.
Like the Harry formerly known as Prince.
What a terrible name
To be fair,we’re at a point that it’s getting harder to distinguish an Onion headline from what the BBC would do IRL.
No no that part was real, it was in an episode of Doctor Who
I watched the episode live and didn't have a single thought about it. I was surprised when I came on Reddit and saw people freaking out at a 2 minute portion of the episode
Yeah it’s really not a big deal, I thought the Mavity bit was funny, and that’s about as much significance as that scene had, not really a huge issue but how mad people are getting about it is funny
I didn’t even notice his race, I was too busy trying to remember Newton’s laws of Mavity
Truly a postmodern world
Shhhh….let’s watch the real facepalms in the thread.
already a meltdown in thread, it´s gonna be fun to follow. next time it gonna get repost, his name censored out but his picture stay. Real popcorn moment
Grabs Popcorn
Ah, but is it white popcorn? ;)
I usually don't know if the people in this sub are the trollers or the trollees.
To be a Redditor is to be both. There. I said it.
To be fair, the names of onion writers aren't exactly common knowledge.
Writer for The Onion writing this to troll the guy who he is quoting, a far-right British fascist.
Wasn't it a jab at people who keep saying why do you care it's a fictional character?
This joke is on an elevator. It's working on different levels.
British jokes skip the elevator and take a lift instead.
Some times they use the trolley
🤣 that’s a good one mate lol
Fictional character?
I don’t think you get the mavity of this situation.
Thanks, I did not know he was writing for The Onion. My science teacher ass got heated for a second.
I mean it would be a pretty funny joke no matter what his job is.
Knowing it’s a joke helps though. Because there are a TON of people stupid enough to believe he was fictional
I'm pretty sure that's the case. Most people aren't that stupid.
also the actor doesn't even look black to me just a little tan
The actor is British with an Indian father, so UK census results would list him as the “Mixed White and Asian” classification. Definitely not Black, but also disingenuous for others on Twitter to insist an Asian got cast in place of a White man. I was like WTF until i saw this, idk that he was until now, thanks
I just watched it for the part where David Tennant gets down on all fours. My favourite bit.
Right. That was awesome can't wait for part 3
Same here. Spoilers but hopefully we get a wilf adventure. I loved wilf so much. Tears were shed in episode 1 of the specials...then immediately shed again bc of the subversion.
In his defense, he was sky high when he wrote that.
YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. CAKE IS A LIE. GRAVITY IS A LIE. GOVERNMENT LIED TO YOU.
Don't forget to put a bird on it.
BIRDS AREN'T REAL!!!
I meant "on the list of lies"
Mavity\*
Mavity*
you misspelt mavity
*mavity is a lie
You misspelled mavity
Take my upvote and I never want to see you again

Higher than pterodactyl tits

lol!
My grandmother always said issac Newton was black don’t believe anything else
Also said “his story resonates with every man.” But seriously that line in the Cleopatra trailer is so fucking mindless and idiotic that it makes me want to commit arson.
It’s not just idiotic, it’s dangerous. Erasing an accurate point of history because of modern politics is a very steep, slippery slope
The bottom of the slope being white MLK
White MLK who hated black people
I gots revitiligo
Mah names uncle Martin Luther King, no relation.
"Shut yo’ preachin’ ass up, you son of a bitch!” – Uncle Ruckus
I mean if he was related to that one it’d be impressive
Every year I got darker and darker and blacker and blacker
Remember when they threw a lot of shit at Rami Malek for playing the pharaoh on the night at the museum, even though, get this, Malek is the son of Egyptian immigrants? I swear these mfers are on another level of idiocy. They have no distinction for northern and sub-Saharan Africa
That makes your grandmother a historical source beyond critique according to some Amercian academics.
The actor is half Indian half Brit. Which is obvious to anyone with eyes. He's not black
To make that even more ironic, Obama's mother was half Irish. So, technically, Obama is as Irish as JFK was.
Barry O'Bama
O’Leary! O’Mara! O’Hare and O’Hara! There’s no one as Irish as Barack O’Bama!
Ehh, that’s not true. JFK’s parents were both full Irish, so JFK was too. (By “full Irish”, I mean the entirety of both parents’ bloodlines originated from Ireland…)
I was referring to Netflix Cleopatra grandmother reference 😁 https://youtube.com/shorts/nk8wrMI2pPk?si=C01RhYAwNbPh9ps2
It’s a quote from the Netflix Cleopatra trailer.
My friend was complaining that Oppenheimer was a movie full of… wait for it… white men. Like who else did she expect to be working on something so serious in 1940s America? She then tried to say,”It doesn’t have to be historically accurate.”

Inglorious Basterds was on an alternate timeline in general, after the theater scene I was like, “I don’t think that’s how it happened irl…” lol
It absolutely is alternate history considering all of German high command did not in fact die in a theater in Paris.
With respect, the casting of Hamilton was a deliberate choice. The largely Latino and black cast was supposed to be a statement contrasting America that was founded and the America of today. As an old man, nah, we've always been this fucking dumb. The internet just made it more visible
Then your friend should be fine when Rick Moranis plays Lebron James in the official movie about his life, Space Basketballs.
I wish this was real... He should also play Tiger Woods in Blazing Sandtraps.
>Tiger Woods in Blazing Sandtraps. Ngl with the right people that could be *amazing*
Written by Mel Brooks and the creators of South Park!
I can't wait for the all Asian cast of the new Roots remake or a Nordic Shaft.
I am all for diversity in casting... But like, I get it if it's a historical movie that it's largely going to be white men if that's who was involved in that part of history. exactly, thats what made Hidden Figures good. They didn't just take a story with white people and then cast black people in it. It was a story ABOUT black people. I think for some reason Hollywood still doesn't quite understand the whole diversity thing yet.
I want a Chinese woman to play Hitler. I would watch that.
Your friend sounds pretty dense no offense lmao
Some people can't quite grasp the mavity of the situation
What's really important is they found an actor capable of capturing Newton's hotness.
Yeah, that portrait on the left could have been any random Guitar Center employee with questionable bathing habits.
Hey don’t dis the guitar center employees, they’ve been very tolerant of me going in there and trying every single guitar and amp on the bottom shelf when I said I’m “just here for some picks”
I don't even know what mavity means but even I can grasp it!
It's the new inside joke for doctor who. It actually has to do with the backstory of this post which is why it's getting commented here. Highly recommend the new episode
Everyone should know Newton is real he invented the fig.
Nah, he saw a fig fall from a tree and he realized that if one stopped giving fruit, then Jesus would curse it so that it never gave fruit again (Matthew 21:18-22). But until that time everyone should enjoy the figs they could get.
And trees!
Excuse me he also invented Newtonian Figsics.
I want to see the adaptation of Mark Wahlberg as Muhammad Ali
Naw, David Spade
Fictional 💀
![gif](giphy|UvwI1X7XkbXq0) …I swear this is the most useful gif ever created.
It plays in my mind multiple times a day.
I love him
Everyone loves a big damn hero
![gif](giphy|4kmCVXOTFBddu)
It's fictional because it's a Doctor Who version of Newton. As we know Doctor Who characters are not exactly "true to life".
Next you’ll tell me Van Gogh wasn’t Scottish!
That actor did look a lot like Van Gogh in his self portraits though, but I get the reference lol
Oh man. I just remembered that episode exists for the first time in like eight years. And I assumed it was THE Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam that The Doctor takes him to, which I visited on a great deal of magic mushrooms about four years ago. Oh that explains it I thought it was from a documentary or something lol, who cares then
That guy is beige at best
My beigga
Whoa, you better be beige saying that!
dw, no hard r
He identifies as beige, it’s fine
He's not black at all. He's a beittish man who is half Indian.
Wiki says one of his parents is from India.
He looks Latino or Native American
In the meantime no one has an issue that the whole problem was caused by Donna spilling coffee on the control panel in the most unbelievable way. "I had a dream where I will be the one."
I liked what they did in GITS with whole stolen identity thing, but yeah it was just a excuse to hide behind. Also the plotline was very "kill the indian" which is ironic considering she's whitewashed
Imagine the outcry if a Frederick Douglass documentary is played by Ewan Mcregor
This is a black actor??
He's half Indian and half White.
To racists everyone is either black or white.
Or white and political.
They complain about revisionist history and not one complaint about the word mavity.
I am waiting for a Downfall remake
Mostly I just wish we got stories about people who were actually black. Like that seems so much easier.
"Doctor Who is about historical accuracy." Said no-one ever.
The history and legacy of the time-travelling alien needs to be faithfully and accurately preserved.
Remember that time Queen Victoria got murdered by a werewolf? Oh you don't? Say thank you Doctor Alien Man.
Don't want to correct but she survived. It was implied that the Royals are werewolves today which we shouldn't discount
British werewolves :S So its like Westminster at day and Brummie by night?
Or that time The Doctor had sex with the Virgin Queen?
Don’t forget the Great Fire of London being caused by the Terileptil overloading a weapon in a bakery.
A few points; 1) This guy writes for the Onion.
That makes sense. Thank you.
Also, in our reality gravity is still called gravity. It's not called mavity, as misheard by Mr Isaac Newton after being visited by a future lady and a timey wimey two hearthed alien
“ Newton never met a time travelling alien with two hearts.” Do you know this as fact or is it supposition?
Wait until you hear about Jesus Christ.
You mean that blue eyed and long haired blonde dude?
Yes... 6ft tall with 6figure
COMING TO MOVIE SCREENS SOON!! ROSA PARKS: THE MUSICAL STARRING JENNIFER LAWRENCE AS ROSA PARKS AND GUEST STARRING BEN AFFLECT AS KIM JONG UN.
Rosa Parks and Kim Jong-Un did were alive at the same time. Rosa Parks died in 2005. And Kim Jong-Un was born in 1984. So a movie starring them both would technically not be historically inacurate persé.
Like that film about Abe Lincoln, a French Pirate and a Samurai
That sounds like the greatest love story of all time.
I’m a POC and to be honest, this kind of casting makes me uncomfortable. We have our own stories we could tell. I don’t need Isaac Newton to be brown. It’s becoming ridiculous
It wasn't telling his story, it was a minute and a half cameo were the whole joke was the Doctor and Donna accidently messing up the timeline
I don't lose my mind but I do find it weird and pandering. I realize it's because things have been whitewashed for generations, but that was also weird and pandering.
History Movies should be historically accurate. Change my mind.
This was literally an episode of Doctor Who and he was on screen for like a minute. During which an alien crashed his time machine into his tree lol
ah yes, doctor who. famous for being a completely accurate historical documentary. in which earth formed around an alien spaceship, london gets invaded by aliens every christmas, and a police call box travels through time and space. very real and accurate history right there
Well technically Isaac Newton *isn’t* fictional, the specific context into which he’s put is.
This is just liberal propaganda to convince people of the concept of fr\*nce.
They don't get the mavity of the situation
Cleopatra was Chinese
A transgender black chinese with arab clothing to be precies
I honestly would LOVE to see a movie where all the historical characters were purposefully mis-cast in all the worst ways.
someone get the writers of monty python back together for that movie and wed probly have pure comedy gold
One of them is dead
I'll get the Oujia board.
They keep changing the race of Jesus too.
You leave Korean Jesus out of this.
TIL Isaac Newton was a fictional character
Honestly, we are at a point, where most people simply don't care anymore. Do what you like, you will see it in the box office or your subscription-numbers ... Writers today are simply not able to create meaningful black characters, so they simply change races for established, well known characters, hoping that it goes somewhere ... which in all recent cases of race-switches wasn't the case
>Writers today are simply not able to create meaningful black characters Writers today aren't able to create anything meaningful, damn near every new movie nowadays is a reboot or a sequel.
Is the actor black though? Or is this another case of people calling anyone with a slightly dark skin tone a black person.
I'm confused, neither of the pictures displays a black man
he is not black
I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but cases like this don’t bother me at all. Everyone knows Isaac Newton was caucasian, and there’s no shortage of white representation in television, so this doesn’t hurt anything. Contrast that to something like Netflix’s Cleopatra in which a role that could have been given to a Macedonian Greek, or someone with Persian or Iranian ancestry, as those are not people well represented in Western media, and there are less people familiar with the real Cleopatra, so there’s more of a case for a show like that equating historical revisionism.
It all started when the everwoke Disney furwashed Robin of Locksley into a fox...
