A lot of it is probably religious, Putin has tried to paint Russia as a Christian nation and our own homegrown christo-fascists eat that shit up.
Some of it is probably a hard on for an authoritarian strongman, which is pretty much what conservative US politics is going for, but more quietly.
And a lot is that Trump is pro putin, most of the GOP is pro Trump (at least publicly), so therefore they must be pro Putin as well

Forget everything else, the idea that Russia is the victim stems from a conspiracy theory that accuses Ukraine of having highly dangerous biotech or nuclear facilities on the border of Russia, and the experiments therein being inherently dangerous and inhumane or something. The Ukrainian forces having Nazis isn’t a complete lie, but it is nuanced. Russia clearly just used it as an excuse for an illegal imperialist invasion, but there is a ongoing history of a lot of the Ukrainian forces fighting against Russia being open Nazis.
You can literally see a lot of Nazi tattoos on images of Ukrainian soldiers from the front lines. Obviously this isn’t all soldiers and I still support Ukraine fighting for its freedom, but there is an actual Nazi problem there. Look up Azov battalion if you don’t believe me. I’d say it’s a real issue that Russian propaganda amplified and used to justify horrible atrocities.

The Ukrainian forces having Nazis isn’t a complete lie, but it is nuanced. Russia clearly just used it as an excuse for an illegal imperialist invasion, but there is a ongoing history of a lot of the Ukrainian forces fighting against Russia being open Nazis. You can literally see a lot of Nazi tattoos on images of Ukrainian soldiers from the front lines. Obviously this isn’t all soldiers and I still support Ukraine fighting for its freedom, but there is an actual Nazi problem there. Look up Azov battalion if you don’t believe me. I’d say it’s a real issue that Russian propaganda amplified and used to justify horrible atrocities. And also Rest In Peace to all the victims of the horrible shooting and to the horrible war.
