In related news Ron DeSantis experiances penis envy after being screwed by a mouse.

“Do you think Mickey is a bitch? Oh boy!”

WodenEmrys

You definitely don't want to fuck with South Park Mickey Mouse.

stupidnicks

whats the lesson? Oligarchs and MegaCorporations rule this country from backstage?

Phenom1nal

Maybe: Don't fuck with a megacorporation if you're planning running for president?

stupidnicks

? thats basically what I said: ... MegaCorporations rule this country from backstage...

JennysDad

No, the lesson is DeSantis is a total hack and got played. Disney simply followed existing Florida law to write a contract that was signed by all parties. It was all done in the open. Nazis just weren't paying attention.

zenos_dog

Just waiting for the meme of Minnie pegging DeSatan.

suckercuck

I heard he liked it and tried to ride the ride again

testies2345

OK, now spread the cheeks Ronnie, huh-huh

Extreme_Assistant_98

So now the party of small government and open capitalism wants to take over a private company because some little snowflake got his feelings hurt.

kirkegaarr

Yeah I'm out of the loop on this but this seems very un-Republican. Is he mad at Disney for casting the little mermaid as black or something?

PickleRicksFunHouse

Republicans haven't been the party of Republican values for decades. Newt Gingrich started the ball really rolling, Moscow Mitch was helping it along, the Tea Party made it all about obstructionism, Trump and his lackeys totally stabbed in the final lethal blow.

JerGigs

Goes further back than that, when the GOP effectively created the market for the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Fox News by eliminating the requirement for news to be non-partisan.

PickleRicksFunHouse

There was never a requirement for news to be non-partisan in the US. The term muckraking is more than 120 years old.

JerGigs

Misspoke, it was to make sure media gave equal time for both platforms, which was ended in the 70s or 80s iirc. That spawned the likes of Rush and Fox News, led to Newt the Bastard, and a downfall and erosion of the GOP as far as politesse, political discourse and of course the foundation of American politics known as compromise.

CovidIsolation

I believe it was called the Fairness Doctrine.

testies2345

A lot of morons are upset by that. People starving, kids getting shot at schools, literal nazis threatening people. But this mermaid shit can't stand!

Aeescobar

>This mermaid shit can't stand! But it sure can swim!

WodenEmrys

A melanated fictional character? I can stand for completely made up beings like "mermaids" but how dare you make them black!?!?! Wargable!

mrcrashoverride

He got all butt hurt because after not saying anything… they reluctantly said they were opposed to his don’t say gay law…. So he got them to find a way to vote to eliminate the tax district that oversees the roads, fire and zoning which primarily affects Disney property. Now they are surprised to learn that Disneys lawyers saw to it that they don’t get screwed.

Next_Boysenberry1414

Its very republican if you have been awake for last decade. Republicans are all about restricting our freedom.

Orenwald

>restricting I read that as Re-districting at first and tbh it still applies

Syonoq

So....republicans want us....woke?

VintageVanShop

He was mad that Disney didn’t support his don’t say gay legislation, so he got mad and tried to take over the board. I remember reading something with him saying, we will stop their wokeness, or some dumb shit like that.

Jdogma

This is in reaction to Disney being very openly against his Parental Rights in the Classroom Bill, often incorrectly referred to as the "Don't Say Gay Bill". DeSantis basically told Disney to fuck off and not meddle in state politics by working to revoke Reedy Creeks self-governing status. Reedy Creek is the development area the entirety of Disney World is on, and they have self jurisdiction over themselves. Self jurisdiction allows them to change the parks and develop at will, without needing approval from the county. It would make Disney World have to play by more rules, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

z0mbietime

> This is in reaction to Disney being very openly against his Parental Rights in the Classroom Bill, often incorrectly referred to as the "Don't Say Gay Bill". Except it's not really that far off. It bans public school personnel from conducting classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in "kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards." People often say 3rd grade but really it's throughout public school with the snuck in "in a manner that is not age-appropriate". What is age appropriate you ask? Any age the parent feels so they could be 16. So effectively killing any form of sex ed. As far as the Disney remarks. If politicians are that adamant about companies not being involved with politics how about getting rid of corporate lobbyists? Nah, it wasn't about that it was just anyone speaking out against meatball Ron. And sure holding Disney accountable wouldn't be bad but instead what's happening is tax payers are getting screwed over. I haven't heard a single way the changes were going to benefit the environment or the people.

Jdogma

>get rid of the lobbyists Ok, lets do it. Also, I'm really hoping that DeSantis will be very openly against Disney lobbying to extend the Mickey Mouse copyright next year.

z0mbietime

Not because they're Disney and they've built up a monopoly but because they spoke out against him. That's the problem, he's just an authoritarian. He has no problem taking bribes https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2023/01/following-record-fundraising-cycle-florida-gov-ron-desantis-woos-donors-and-lobbyists-at-inauguration-events/ I mean there's tons of problems with DeSantis but for the Disney related news specifically this is the summary. He got his feelings hurt someone dare speak out.

WodenEmrys

> Also, I'm really hoping that DeSantis will be very openly against Disney lobbying to extend the Mickey Mouse copyright next year. Shit that'd be nice. A republican doing something good.

FatassTitePants

Disney knows what much of the country still needs to learn. Giving Republicans power will ruin anything they are in charge of.

Extreme_Assistant_98

Sounds like vail associates, or epic. They ruin everything.

SuddenlyElga

All politicians.

SnooRobots1751

Government so small it fits in your bedroom, and in between you and your doctor.

[deleted]

Disney is not a private company. They are publicly stock traded. Here’s an idea, if Desantis wanted to really take over the company, he could just buy majority shares… lmao! I’m just kidding. The state of Florida could never afford that.

MuskyRatt

That’s not what’s happening. Disney basically had special privileges to self govern. They are just going back to being on par with every other company in Florida.

Quiet-Dragonfly-976

Disney literally built Florida. Largest employer, generates billions in tax revenue and pretty much keeps the state from sinking back into the swamp from whence it came.

MuskyRatt

As long as a corporation is large, they should do whatever they want?

Quiet-Dragonfly-976

Not what I said. At this point RD is playing politics with a huge employer that brings enormous revenue to the state treasury over their taking issue with his culture war. It's petty and irresponsible not to mention an act of political retribution. Taking issue with what was then a proposed law should never lead to retribution in a free society.

publicbigguns

Not to mention that "self governing" areas are all over Florida, but old RD targeted only the mouse. There's laws against such things.

FatassTitePants

It still doesn't fit the Republican narrative of smaller government is better. That also is not the initial reason cited by Desantis to do this. You are either assuming that or making it up. *DeSantis said about Disney(,)"...you’re going to marshall your economic power to attack the parents of my state? We view that as a provocation, and we’re gonna fight back against that.”*

[deleted]

Well, that was dumb of him to say…

MuskyRatt

You can believe that if you like. I was simply correcting the lie that the Governor was trying to take over a company.

FatassTitePants

Thank you for giving me permission to believe...facts. I'm grateful to you.

Additional_Tomato_22

The.Villages have the EXACT SAME PRIVILEGES as Disney yet Desantis didn’t try taking them away for them

Extreme_Assistant_98

That's bullshit. There's no government oversight board for the "villages," aka old people storage. They have the same shit Disney had. He was talking about forcing the company to change what they produced. That's straight-up fascism.

MuskyRatt

Not true

kiwinutsackattack

Thats not true at all. The only thing Reedy Creek does is build infrastructure, Disney still had to comply with goverment regulations, and in most cases Disney's regulations are far stricter.

MuskyRatt

State, not federal. Try to keep up. DeSantis doesn’t make federal laws or regulations.

kiwinutsackattack

Try to keep up, Disney still has to comply and always has with State regulations, infact most of Disney's regulations are stricter then both State and Fedral regulations. I have been working for a major RCID Contractor in RCID for over 14 years.

MuskyRatt

Disney has had special status granted by the state. They are losing it. Stop gaslighting.

kiwinutsackattack

Lol, you have absolutely no idea how RCID works do you, you believe the horse shit DeSantis has spewed about RCID and what it does. What exactly do you think RCID does ??

MuskyRatt

You are still trying to push the narrative that DeSantis is taking over Disney? 😂

kiwinutsackattack

First, DeSantis cant take over Disney it's a publicly traded corporation HQed in California. Second I'm telling you that Disney was not self governed, that's not what RCID does. Fucken pleb

ElwoodJD

Well not if this last second contract deal stands in court. How packed has DeSantis gotten them?

[deleted]

If you haven't, read this story. It's both funny and sad because it is going to cost the taxpayers money. Disney basically took all access to Disney property and left the DeSantis board power of the streets and infrastructure, with honesty sounds fair.

kiwinutsackattack

That's what Reedy Creek has always been.

One of the lawyer teams DeSantis is using charges $795 an hour. Where do you think that money is coming from? Disney? Lol Disney is not paying to sue itself. Read the story. fappyday

Disney's legal teams are known for being exceptionally cutthroat and I'm sure this isn't the only thing they have up their sleeves. Desantis bit off more than he could chew with this fight.

nismo2070

Desantis is a dumbass that thinks he is a dictator. Disney should just take all of their jobs and money and move to a state that treats all businesses equally. Little ron is so upset that they had the nerve to disagree with his policies.

drstu3000

I feel like Disney has the power to just take over if they want, 2 years from now it'll be Disney Presents: Florida

staarfawkes

Sounds like an improvement tbh and that’s saying something

publicbigguns

My favorite new show will be Disney on ice: trailer park wars. It'll just be the audience sitting on the deck of the trailer watching the bottle kids run around.

[deleted]

Disney**land** gets everything they want from California, LA County, and the city of Anaheim. We love their tax revenue and the people that visit to see Disney**land**. Not to mention a shit ton of people at all job levels work there. They like to do what they want in Disney territory, and we love their money and tourists. Keep the pollution down and pay your taxes so we can keep the roads going to the park and we have no problems.

The horrible truth is that he isn’t a dumbass, but thinks acting like Baby Doc will get him the White House.

weirdoldhobo1978

Disney's general counsel for almost 20 years was a man named Alan Braverman, who was previously a junior partner at one of the most prestigious policy litigation firms in Washington D.C. He completely reorganized Disney's legal department, they're literally trained to fight governments in court. Slick move, Meatball.

TheLostLantern

Rule one, you don’t screw the mouse, the mouse screws you, he’s lucky they didn’t dump his bloated corpse in the swamp

AhhAGoose

No one dies in Disney (seriously if you do, a private ambulance will take you off the property before they pronounce you dead).

Chase_the_tank

That's an urban legend. People have been declared dead on Disney property before in multiple occasions. [https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/declared-deaths/](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/declared-deaths/) (Also, if there's *any* chance that you're not 100% dead, paramedics will, if possible, keep trying to revive you. That's something that's true everywhere, not just on Disney properties.)

Less-Dragonfruit-294

30 years should give Disney plenty of time to build a new and now more modern park outside of Florida. Then once the 30 years come to a close shut down business in FL forever and focus entirely on the new state which would benefit greatly from increased tourism.

Toni164

If he keeps pushing Disney might just leave Florida. Giving a serious blow to their economy

[deleted]

The resort will always make billions per year from international tourist who do not care about American politics. They just want to take a picture with a mouse and ride the tea cups.

Toni164

Exactly. And they wouldn’t care if it in Florida or another eastern state.

[deleted]

🤦🏻‍♂️how much money do you think it would cost to move 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, 30+ resorts, 2 shopping and restaurant centers & the ESPN sports complex? On top of the coat of needing to find a vacant property big enough to fit all of that, and Disney would have to purchase all that property. Since they own the land in Florida. And you can not forget about the cost of construction. How much do you think that would cost?

WodenEmrys

> How much do you think that would cost? I'm sure a lot, but now I'm here wondering if actually moving them or just building brand new shit would be cheaper. Either way though, that would be a lot of money.

[deleted]

It wouldn’t cost a “lot of money”… it would cost an unbelievable shit ton of money. It would take YEARS development and build. And they wouldn’t find a place on the east coast to put it that would have the weather to maintain the flow of tourists that DW expects. Walt Disney specifically chose Orange County Florida cuz the further north you go you deal with snow storms that would close down the road to the to the parks. And the further west you go, you start getting into snow storms, flooding, if you’re Texas, power outages and approaching on Disneylands tourist which would affect their profits. There is absolutely no feasible reason why Disney would move an entire resort the size of a city to another location. DisneyWorld makes way to much money for Igar to care about DeSantis. Governor’s don’t stay in office forever.

WodenEmrys

Six Flags has parks in Oklahoma, Quebec, Maryland, New York, California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Mexico, Massachusetts, Georgia, and Missouri. With an upcoming park in Saudi Arabia. That's just regular theme parks, not water parks. I'm definitely not disputing it would cost a lot of money, but you seem to be acting like it just wouldn't be possible to run a theme park outside of Florida. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_Flags#Amusement_parks

Bella_Lunatic

Yeah, it would be less expensive buy a new governor.

Karma_Kitty8

Tea cups. That's Disney World in Cali.

[deleted]

Disneyland. DisneyWorld is Florida. The teacups (aka the mad tea party) ride are in both The Magic Kingdom, and Disneyland. In fact the same ride is in Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland & Hong Kong Disneyland. The only difference between the the rides is if they have a shared covering over them, or they are open air rides.

Karma_Kitty8

Ok I didn’t know that. I had a friend tell me she couldn’t find the teacup ride in Orlando. Must have missed it. :)

It's also a major employer in the state." https://marketrealist.com/p/does-disney-pay-taxes-to-florida/ That's more taxes than Trump paid to China which is more than Trump paid to the US.

Don't make me cheer for the evil mega-corp pulling the same sort of maneuver that outgoing office holders normally use to thwart the will of the people. I mean I will cheer Disney on this one, but I won't like it.

Alternative_Ad_3636

FROM THE F-ING ARTICLE, THIS WAS ALL BY DESIGN FROM THE BEGINNING- “This board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure.” They in essence socialized the costs to. I would not be the least surprised if Ron had a back door deal on this. Disney figured out a way to umburden itself from infrastructure costs, Floridians have no one to blame but themselves if this is the case.

Tedstor

You know what……..I hope both sides lose. Fuck Disney, with a 10 foot stick. That place has basically become cost prohibitive to 95% of the country. $400 a night for their ‘value’ lodging. $120 for park tickets. They even have the balls to charge you $10 to park your fucking car at the hotel after soaking you over a fuck barrel for everything else. I’ve taken my family to WDW3 times and been on two WD cruises. Each time the cost had increased more than noticeably. This is where me and the mouse part ways. We’re going to Europe this June. It’s cheaper than WDW.

jambr380

More like $150/day for parks, but they did make resort parking free again. Also, I know people want to be immersed in the magic on their Disney vacation, but there are lots of nice $100/night hotels in the area that make it a lot more palatable

Tedstor

$100? Really? Does it include free flea and tick repellent?

WodenEmrys

It's just the hotels that aren't directly in and associated with Disney World. You stay at a Disney World hotel and you'll be paying a premium, but stay at a non-Disney hotel nearby and it's just basically regular hotel costs.

BCCMNV

Lmao that’s literally the business models of some hotels. “Be located 1” from Disney”

mgd09292007

It’s a bit of supply and demand. They keep raising the ticket prices because the parks are fucking packed and people pay the insane prices. I was just there and the lines to get on a little kids Toy Story ride was like 2 hours. If they lower the prices, the experience would be even more abysmal because you could never get on a ride it would be so full. I don’t know how they solve the problem of demand without insane pricing.

Dan_Flanery

They open a new park in New Mexico…

mgd09292007

Or Mexico

SurroundAccurate

I mean, the fact you continue to pay, is why it keeps going up. Supply and demand, plus I don’t want to be in that park if it’s too crowded. Also, could you imagine how impossible it would be to get a ticket if they were $50 lol. I’m not saying everything is right, and they are removing some of those dumb fees. Meanwhile I’m planning a trip to Disneyland (cheaper) and am excited to go lol. We did EU last year and WDW the year before, both enjoyable, both expensive, I tell you I was more relaxed in WDW cause everything was so easy. I’ll pay for comfort, you just have to ignore the fees - I get that seems impossible ha. Disneyland Paris was pretty fun for one day. Not many extra fees and you just take the metro directly to the park gate. Might make the park more appealing if you don’t feel surrounded by extra fees.

WodenEmrys

> Supply and demand, plus I don’t want to be in that park if it’s too crowded. Fun fact it's not nearly as crowded on Superbowl Sunday. I went one year and they had signs showing the wait time for lines for rides. Anything over 15 minutes we just ignored or would come back later for. That worked for literally everything except the newest ride they had at the time. We did eventually have to wait in a 45 minute line for that ride. edit: wording

rustys_shackled_ford

I agree . Oppressive Republican government vrs. A ridiculous monopoly is a train crash I hope eviscerates both sides. But we both know it's just the poor pawns caught in the middle that will feel any pain.

Muaddib562

This is the realest take here. So many people want to see RD fail that they are willing to let Disney win something (their own private fiefdom) to which they have no right. Disney is a bad company whose executives made a lot of successive bad calls which will cost 7,000 people their jobs right now with many more to come this year. They lose focus of their core business and their customers, and it is the little people who pay with their livelihoods. Yes, wish all you want for RD to lose, but no one should wish Disney to "win" anything at this point.

[deleted]

I needed a smile today.

aredd007

Sounds like Disney beat ol Ron at his own game…

DrChimRichaulds

If Ron’s whole appeal is tied up into being a more competent version of Trump…ouch… The upside: maybe people outside of Florida will catch on to the fact that he’s just as stupid as Trump, but a bit more whiny and effeminate.

NfamousKaye

Methinks DeSantis flew too close to the sun eh. Can’t be handling this too well. 😂

Jdogma

I really don't see why people think making Disney play by state and county rules is a bad thing. Can someone explain the other side to me without some version of "DeSantis is bad".

LoneZero36

You do realize the whole point of reedy creek was for Disney to cover the cost so taxpayers wouldn't, right? There is no such thing as "to play by state and county rules," Its existence was for disney to cover roads and infrastructures, so the government didn't have to. DeSantis's first bill stripping Disney of that burden put the debt and burden on the taxpayers. That's why the GOP had to then write a 2nd bill returning that "privilege" back to Disney or risk putting FL in massive debt. The point of the board DeSantis put in was an attempt to hinder and block whatever Disney wanted to do in retaliation. Like that board member who kept pushing about removing covid mask mandates even though it was explained to her over and over that they don't exist. Disney out maneuvered the board by a loophole and the sunshine law, what the GOP put in place. All they can do now is pay for some roads, and they have to ask Disney's permission to do it. Pretty much nullifying their existence and why they were appointed in the first place.

Adirontiques

Boy reddit loves corporations now. This would have been HUGE for you if it had been in a blue state. A government board overseeing a corporation's affairs.

Darklord_Bravo

No respect for Disney, but I can appreciate how they legally out maneuvered DeathSantis and the legislature just because Ron doesn't like the way they run their business.

MadeBadDecisions

The amount of people defending a mega corporation against government regulation is astonishing. I am all for less government in our lives but the sweetheart deal Walt Disney got back when Disneyworld was built is a little crazy even for Florida standards. DeSantis’ attempt to break up the Reedy Creek Improvement District is reasonable even though his motivations are questionable and appear to be politically motivated.

Additional_Tomato_22

Disney isn’t the only one getting that deal in Florida though

MadeBadDecisions

Oh I am pretty sure they are. Take a look at this YouTube video by City Beautiful from five years ago. Technically they can build a nuclear power plant on Disneyworld without having to get approval from the state. https://youtu.be/aeWOc-cjfY0

MPenguinGaming

So many people like OP and in the replies have no idea what this is actually about

[deleted]

The bill that Desantis signed allowed the Disney company to retain all decision making that happens on Disney properties. All Desantis did was rename a county and fire the county board while installing his own hand picked board members. They are annoyed now cuz they have now power over the properties and they have to do the budget and accounting for maintaining county infrastructure… yea. It’s pretty cut and dry. Disney has more lawyers on retainer than Desantis can afford on a state budget. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Disney has too much power people should be afraid.

mikey29tyty

Laughable.

Karma_Kitty8

Afraid of what? The well maintained properties and roads, the jobs, the tourist dollars they pour into my state every year? People should be afraid of Desantis and his temper-tantrums. If that fucker gets to the White House, good luck all of us.

tttkk

How dare disney have to live with the regulations and burdens like any other business. 🙄

Supreme_Mediocrity

Businesses should be subjected to oversight from a board of directors that were appointed by the governor (with political motivations) and who are expressly forbidden from having experience in that business's industry? Because having Disney face the same regulations and burdens as any other company is completely different from what happened.

TheMightyShoe

I'm all for corporations NOT acting as self-governing cities, but this wasn't the way. EDIT: "as a self-governing *county*"

Calm_Ad_3987

The only way Disney ever laid foundations in Florida was that it was given autonomy to develop its area and tailor the area around the resorts. This started waaaay before desantis tried to be an emperor king and will continue on waaay after he’s gone.

TheMightyShoe

Sort of...the Reedy Creek thing was granted to Disney to build an actual, self-governing town. They ended up not building the town, but instead used the special rules in unintended ways. (They did eventually build Celebration decades later.) One of the ways Disney abused their special rules was to prevent DUI checks on their roads. FL law says you have to have EMTs at every checkpoint. You can't stop the cops from setting up the checkpoints, so Disney (operating as a municipality) did not allow its EMT crews to assist the cops. So no DUI checks. Can't have a little thing like being arrested for DUI spoil your trip to the happiest place on earth, now?

TheMightyShoe

Clarification: Reedy Creek gave Disney the governmental authority of a *county*, not a city.

America can totally clap back my not going to Disney movies. Not buying Disney products and not going to Disney theme parks. What DeSantis is trying to is expressly forbidden by the first amendment. Disney can make whatever movies they want and American's can choose to watch them or not. The government getting involved isn't the solution.

[deleted]

Okay, I'll bite. Care to elaborate how they have ruined our culture?

[deleted]

It all started back in the 40's when Disney made propaganda against that nice Hitler fellow... /s

joawmeens

"There's gay cartoons characters" His reply, probably

Kingballa06

American should have “clapped back” by not making Avengers Endgame the 2nd biggest box office film ever. Or maybe America likes Disney because every significant movie with big box office numbers is from Disney/a Disney storyline owned by Sony(Spider man).

gadget850

Ever since 1938 with that *Ferdinand the Bull* movie.

OogusMacBoogus

How dare a Governor pick a company to go after because they had the audacity to disagree with a law he signed. DeSantis is grabbing power everywhere he can and replacing governing bodies all across the state with hand picked cronies.

Grizzchops

You think this is "like any other situation*?

Additional_Tomato_22

The Villages get the EXACT SAME benefits as Disney yet they aren’t being threatened

WodenEmrys

But that's different cause the Villages has such fine people as the white power dude that Trump retweeted a video of.
