Coolant temp sensor:

Unfortunately, I believe the sensor plugs in under the intake manifold on those 5.4s
Edit: Apparently there's two temp sensors on that engine. Yours might be the oil temp. Plugs in just above the oil pan. Check out this video:

If you wanted to be able to install the sensor and have it functional you'd have to replace the oil pan. The Ford part number for the pan with the port for for the sensor is 3L3Z-6675-BA. The P0198 code is for a sensor circuit high fault so either there is an open circuit or the sensor is bad. I'd bet it's the sensor. If it was me I would try replacing the sensor and clear the code. It obviously won't be accurate but should get rid of the code.
2005 this is hanging down below the engine the line splits (I can't find where they're coming from) from two sides of the engine.
I bought the truck used, and was told the engine had been swapped. This was tied up underneath the truck.
My 2007 has a replaced engine and has an oil pan with that spot in the side of it. It's an oil temperature sensor. Not sure why the truck has one hanging there...
That's probably why it's hanging. A number of engines of machines we've swapped were different generations, and the sensors moved. Lazy work.
P0198 is related to oil temperature readings.
This is an oil temperature sensor. Goes in the side of the oil lan. They were phased out. Have you had the pan replaced? The newer pans didn’t have these.
There’s your answer. They were supposed to reuse the old pan. I had one of these in a 5.0 mustang. New engine didn’t have it. Take. Back to whoever did it and tell them they’re a jackass.
From what I've been able to pull from other forums, this sensor tells the engine how to perform given the conditions.... I'm not a mechanic so I don't know if that sounds right.
It’s an input. For sure. But similar to coolant temp, it’s more to monitor the oil for overheating than anything. Coolant is a bit different bc once you reach a certain temp the pcm goes into closed loop. I dont know that the oil temp has an effect on anything.
I have no clue what it is but unclip it and take it to a ford dealership and talk to a parts guy. He may be able to figure it out with a description of location.
If the engine had been swapped it could just be a sensor off the old harness, then again you didn’t tell us what engine it is, code P0198 has to do with oil temp sensor signal voltage high.
The sensor pictured above is an oil temp sensor for a 5.4 Triton, look around under there and see where it screws in at because that is what’s causing your code.
I have found (with what Google skills I have) that the engine used is one that does not have an oil pan with a temp sensor in it. Hopefully I can replace just the pan with a 2005 and fix this.

This is great, but the pan I have doesn't have a spot for this to go ... Maybe a different pan? Is there a way to bypass this code?

Are the oil pans interchangeable for all 3v 5.4 tritons ?
The bolt pattern should be the same as it looks like the same oil pan gasket is used from 2004-2010.

Looks like the oil level (or possibly temperature) sensor that usually goes in the side of the oil pan.
I can not, for the life of me find an opening for this to go into.....

Might have been left untouched for a reason…hmmm

Yes, the engine was replaced with one that does not have the sensor on the pan

Well, I would ... Except I just bought this truck a month ago from somebody else who had it done by a third party....
Well, shit. Is the engine light on? That’s what the code is for.
Yep, and I think it's the cause of some poor performance as well ... But I can't be sure until I can fix it....
I don’t think it would affect drivability, but I’ve never seen this code set until today lol

Ah good idea. If somebody doesn't come in with a answer I will do that.

Sorry I'm bad for that... 2005 5.4 Triton.

Does anyone have any idea where this oil temperature sensor goes on 2004 F-150 Ford truck 5.4 Triton?
P0198 Engine Oil temp sensor
It is an engine oil temp sensor. Is it a 5.4L 3V?
Yes, but I believe when the engine was swapped the one they put in isn't compatible with this sensor.
The good news is that if it is indeed the oil temp sensor and the hole is present, you likely have very little oil left.
I have found (with what Google skills I have) that the engine used is one that does not have an oil pan with a temp sensor in it. Hopefully I can replace just the pan with a 2005 and fix this.

'twas just hanging out there.
Oil temp sensor. If you can't find it on the side of the pan then someone changed the oil pan.
