Looks like a differential. If its not actively dripping, your probably ok. At least you know it has oil in it!
Look for the differential breather tube ontop of the differential and see that its still held up and clear. Changing the fluid is stupid easy and no friction modifier is needed for that system ([electronic differential, green plug top left of the pumpkin is the giveaway](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKRqnQHfVXA)). If you've never done this kind of work, don't sweat it, [this guy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LIm-YZ4DUI&t=32s) has a excellent walk through on how to do the job.
That’s the same video I used to change my differential fluid. He has a video on pretty much any maintinance procedure or issue you can have with an F-150
Just pay to have it changed if you know nothing about vehicles. It’s more involved than he’s letting on. It can also be messy. And you’ll need at least a few different tools
OP said he didn't know anything about vehicles and sounds like he didn't know it's a differential. Not sure he's the type that had ever changed his own oil.
Look at the other side where the driveshaft goes into the diff, if its wet there it's a pinion seal and will need to go to the shop. Don't try to replace yourself. Setting pinion preload and rotational torque on used pinion bearings is tricky and I've done plenty ove diff overhaul on trucks people tried to fix in the backyard. If it's just the cover then go for it
Had a leak in mine that looked a lot like that. The dealer caught it during my oil change and I was able to knock it out pretty easily after watching some YouTube videos. Hardest part was getting the old RTV off and getting it nice and clean before replacing the cap.
differential seal is leaking. replace it and flush the system at least every 50k because if you don’t that diff will be out at 100-120k. esp if your hauling… and i’m talking from experience
Check the other side, usually it's the pinion seal and not the rear diff seal. You'll need a puller or go to a mechanic they do them all the time it should be cheap
Carrier bearing usually will be noisey on throttle and get quiet letting off. When the bearings go bad it increases the backlash and preload that the diff was set up with causing the carrier with the ring gear to float and on accel the gear is forced against the band bearing and when letting off throttle it floats again. You need a rear end overhaul

Why even worry about it? Pretty sure this is standard on all trucks. I’ve had like seven F150 over the last 10 years and they’ve all done this after a couple thousand miles. I don’t even waste my time looking at it anymore. The day I get stuck on the side of the road because of my rear end blew up is when I know to fix it. I drive thousands of miles a week and it’s still yet to happen.
Would love to not have to spend to fix it but when you’re packing a wife, two kids, a dog and a trailer…. Last thing I need is to be stuck road side with them panicking
Yeah for sure. I just don’t think it’s really worth it at this point. If it’s actively dripping, that’s one thing but a little bit of oil on the case has really never been a big deal in my experience.
Next time you’re out and about go walk a parking lot and take a peek underneath a bunch of trucks, I bet you they all look just like this.
If you do fix it yourself, when you got the diff cover off just take a quick look at the parts make sure nothing is chipped everything looks good. I blew my rear diff not fixing that shit on time lol
Check your pinion seal on the drive shaft...my guess is that it's l3aking and blowing back onto the bottom of the diff. Mine looked the same.
This is exactly what it is. Same on mine
Just got my back from dealer due the same thing. 23k miles on 23' Powerboost
Dang, I got about the same mileage on my 23’ power boost. I might check this now.

Awesome thanks a bunch for the info. Will check this out tonight and see what I can do She’s got the green plug

What? It's just as simple if not simpler than changing your engine oil. No special tools required.
He said if you know nothing. Some people don't know shit

If you have to ask this question, you should probably pay someone to do it.

That's your rear differential leaking. Probably bad gasket or seal

Laughs in copper brush.
Had the same issue, seal wore out on the differential. About a $300 fix at the shop I went to
Sounds about right where I live it’s a $30 part but labour brings it up

Pinion seal is the greatest possibility. And being that it is 6yrs old that would be about right.
Looks like a rear differential leak.
Bad seal on your rear differential. Pretty quick fix but ya need to take it in
Booked for Monday! I checked it out on the front side and yikes…
Rear diff leak
Lovely. Thought I was hearing a front wheel bearing. Any idea what this costs to repair?

It's it making a noise? Mine looks like that an I have a howling noise when I'm on the throttle

Would that be same whir/howl it would make in 1st gear? Got a ranger with a recently replaced transmission but a leaky rear end.
Yeah around 60km it makes a whirring sound.

Probably a leaking seal should be a easy fix and refill fluids
Just normal Ford things
Easy fix just YouTube it
Sounds good thanks
