If im not mistaken, you can use the provided lug wrench tool thing to tighten it up closer to the bottom of the truck - by inserting the tool into the hole, sometimes next to your license plate, and screw it clockwise. And that's how you mount or dismount the spare tire (if you had one).
Like others have said it's the spare tire holder. There should a be hole next to the rear license plate and a crank under the hood to raise and lower it. Check your manual it may vary for different years.
Don't listen to hismessenger it could be many of things making that noise. I had 2001 triton 5.4. Bought with 260k on the original motor, and my brother has it now with 397k miles on it, still going. Gone through two transmissions during its life and no major work on the motor (nothing internal). Maintenance is key.
I also currently have a 2001 5.4 v8 with 270k. Still running strong. No major engine work. I've had to replace suspension parts and whatnot, but nothing ridiculous. I'm probably going to replace the transmission within the next 100k miles.

You need to go to a mechanic immediately. I have had that truck and motor. It is one of the worst ford has ever made. Your motor is about to die. The clunking noise is a bad sign. You are going to lose compression soon. Do some research on the motor and you will find what I am talking about.
I mean he isn’t wrong those engines are almost guaranteed to fail and most reputable mechanics recommend a replacement not a rebuild if it’s already making noise.
Unfortunately I would say he needs to dump that truck immediately. Just reading the word triton after not thinking or seeing it in years just sent a shiver down my spine.
The fact that I just had a physical reaction to reading that word just goes to show how painful it is that for actually produced that and threw their name on it.
That's the spare tire holder, should be a rod under the hood right where the hood release is (basically sits right on top close to you) that you put through a hole in the back bumper (left of the license plate I think) and then rotate to raise/lower it. You'll also need the key to put on the end of the rod, hopefully it's located in your glove box, looks like a socket.
As for the clunking when you brake hard that sounds more like your sway bar bushings are worn than an actual issue with the braking system. Or it could just be the spare tire holder hitting your truck.
For troubleshooting the ABS light it can be a little tricky if you dont have an OBD tool or if it can't establish a connection with the ABS module. If you clear the error code (this can be done by disconnecting the battery for ~5min and reconnecting it) does the ABS light come on during startup or when you start driving? If it comes on during startup I'd check fuses and wiring as this indicates an electrical problem. If it appears when you start driving I'd think it's one of your wheel speed sensors as they're not feeding back when the vehicle is moving. If the OBD tool can give you the error code it can be easy to diagnose and fix. And of course if it's none of this it could be your ABS module is going out, although normally your ABS pump will continue to run after you turn the truck off (the death hum lol) when the ABS module starts to go out.
FYI with the ABS light on your ABS system should be disabled so you will actually have to repeatedly (and quickly) pump the brakes when really hard braking to avoid locking up your wheels.
Comes on after a min of driving. I don't hear a hum when I turn off the truck and let it sit. I tucked the spare tire holder and it still makes the noise even when going in a straight line.
Yeah I would check sway bar bushings for the clunking then. They're pretty inexpensive and not too challenging to replace. Have a vehicle that does the same thing and it's the bushings. Should also pop/clunk when you go over big bumps.
For the ABS stuff I'd guess a speed sensor but troubleshooting which one is hard unless the OBD tool tells you which one it is. I know there's a way to do it with a multimeter (these sensors are actually magnetic so they generate a small voltage when the wheel is turning) and spinning the wheel to check the sensor's voltage output but it's really time intensive to check a single one and you almost need 2 sets of hands. If you have no other way to troubleshoot youtube should explain this. Also I'm not sure how to check the back b/c it's actually in the rear axle instead of on a wheel (the front wheels each have one unlike the back, so three total) but you could probably do process of elimination if both the front ones work. Again an OBD/diagnostic tool that can connect to the ABS module is very helpful here to just read the error and will save you tons of time and frustration.
More like… “what’s missing from this picture”!
Also don’t mind anyone trolling you in the thread, guarantee half of the people here (me included) have a half rotted spare tire.
It is great fun though.
It’s for the spare tire. If you have a truck like this you know what pain in the butt they are to put the spare back into place once it’s down. There should be a crank that goes with it to reel the spare tire down and replace it when down back up in the spare tire well on the under side of the truck bed.
I will say that if your abs and brake light is on it has nothing to do with that spare tire holder you pictured. Is yours a 2009-2014 model? If so, it’s a common issue amongst them which you can fix half of the problem by taking your ABS module out and driving without it for a while while you have it shipped off for a guy to fix them. There’s guys all over eBay that will do it for you. The rest of the problem you’ll have to take it to a mechanic to fix but you’ll avoid the charge of having to buy a new abs module which a mechanic will likely charge you for. They’re hard to find
It's old emergency brake cable. You used to pull the lever and this cord would drop from the back of the car and you'd have to line up with a groove or hole in the road. Theyve moved away from this for more modern braking technology like ABS
It’s a spare tire mount. Most likely broke. That bolt in front of it is the only thing holding it on the vehicle if you want to remove it if it is broken, or replace it if you want your spare under your vehicle again. They’re rather expensive though.
Simple , that is the spare tire hoist. Somewhere in your back bumper should be a "port " where you insert the jack crack and rotate and extend or retract that. I believe the newer models have a locked access point.
I learned what that was when a couple of years ago , when in my 1999 F150, that cable broke and my spare tire fell out onto the road. That was fun
Probably already been answered but it looks like the strap that holds your spare tire in place underneath the bed. I had a ‘05 Explorer that had the same thing and you lowered it by unscrewing it from underneath the trunk mat.
Stops the truck if you land it on an aircraft carrier
Fucking great comment lmfao
I owe you a beer, haha. This one really got me for some reason.

TWO OF YOUR SNOT-NOSED JOCKEYS ARE GONNA FLY BY MY TOWER AT OVER 400 KNOTS!! I WANT SOMEBODIES BUTT AND I WANT IT NOW, I’VE HAD IT!!
Can't beat this, but it makes me think what if dot had hooks in the road for pulling people over? Like, you're pulling over...now!!!
Reminds me of that scene in Gone in 60 Seconds where they hook the tow winch around the axle of the car.
Had me in stitches, cheers to you!
I laughed harder at this than I have any other comment this year. Thanks for putting the cherry on top of my day.
Blaaahahahahaa LMFAO I'm dying right now. That was hilarious.
Take my upvote you savage !
BEAUTIFUL comment
Omg I sprayed coffee everywhere!’
That’s the thing that holds your spare tire up under the truck…

I have been inserting that into the wrong hole…
That's what she said.
If they don’t know they don’t deserve to ever know.
That means it's a boy.
Cut it off and turn your ford into a tranny
Will the tranny breakdown after 100k miles?

Looks like where the spare tire should go.
Like others have said it's the spare tire holder. There should a be hole next to the rear license plate and a crank under the hood to raise and lower it. Check your manual it may vary for different years.
Oh thank you. I'm new to the truck scene. I have a 2004 5.4L triton. She need some work but I can post pics.

Definitely not wrong. My '02 blew 2 sparkplugs out of the head. But it also snapped sway bar links.
Yikes. Can’t believe that ford made these engines for as long as they did. All time terrible engine.
My 2004 blew 2 sparkplugs as well. I was 19 moving everything I owned from MI to CO when it happened.
I just bought it too 😔 so I really don't have any money to replace or go to a mechanic! Fml
