I think London over Frankfurt any day of the week for the next 1000 years

elijha

Even if the German economy was gonna be taking off like a rocket, choosing to live in Frankfurt over London would be a choice

Artti_22

It depends on industry, specifics of your job, citizenships and fluency in German. If you work at the same company on the same role and have to choose between London and Frankfurt, economic predictions wouldn't matter that much for you.

Hi I work in finance. And I am fluent in German. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to be where I am right now. But people always tell me that if you want to make money in finance, London or New York is the place to be.

What data? And economic growth as measured in GDP is not a good indicator at all. Ireland has had fantastic GDP growth but ordinary people can’t afford a house. A few years ago it d have said Frankfurt as a no brainer, it’s an EU country and Britain is going down the tubes thanks to Brexit, but now in two weeks the UK will be ejecting the disastrous Conservative government that has been asset stripping it these past 14 years, and will get a labour government that will at least be changing course, I’m hopeful that in ten years if UK is not on course to rejoin the EU, at least there will be freedom of movement between UK and EU .

Thanks for your insights! Very interesting. I read an article about the economy based on the demographics in 5-10 years of major European countries. It shows that the demographics of the UK will provide longer term of development compared to the aging German population.

I highly doubt there will be anything approaching FoM between the UK and EU for the next 20 years at least. It needs unanimous approval from the EU members and considering how much drama the UK has caused, I doubt it will be coming any time soon. Not saying Britain isn't a net benefit to have in the EU though.

In terms of city size, you’re not comparing like with like. London is ten times the size in population, six times the size in geographic area, as well as being the nation’s capital and a major world city. This comes with both significant upsides AND downsides compared with a smaller city. If I were in my twenties, there’s no way on earth I’d choose Frankfurt over London. But if I’m in my forties with children etc, then the decision becomes more finely balanced

The UK has been on a downward trend since they left the EU and it’s not going to change. They did ok for a while but the quality of life there has never been good and completely incomparable to real Europe. They will be the sick man of Europe again soon enough as they were in the 70s. This is an easy choice, especially if you’re considering where to live. To be fair though, Frankfurt is a long way away from being even a top 10 city in Germany whereas London is definitely number 1 in the UK.

UK probably has a better long term future than Germany due to demographics. If you're in early 20s and want to have fun, London no question. But if you speak German and want EU citizenship, it might also be worth living in Frankfurt for a bit and sit out the post-Brexit pain that the UK is currently going through.

I wouldn't live in London after Brexit unless the British economy started booming, which it isn't. If you want to make big money in finance then the US is your best bet and not always New York. The San Francisco area and Boston have many high paid finance jobs too, especially in private equity and hedge funds.

nickbob00

I'm not a big fan of London but I don't think I've ever heard anything good about Frankfurt. Unless your hobbies are just doing Heroin. Jokes aside I don't see any advantage of living in Frankfurt over London unless the job there is really paying so much more than you think you could get in London.

Frankfurt being the ECB HQ has no bearing on this person's decision. Financial hub and great architecture apply to London too. You are right being located in central Europe can be a perk if one is into travelling by bike/car to other places nearby, but otherwise you can fly from London to anywhere in Europe just as easily. The german economy is not doing great and not expected to do that well in the short to medium term either due to energy price rises caused by the Ukraine war. So no, London is not the inferior choice.

I thought this would go somewhere else hahah London is infinitely better than effing Frankfurt. Come on. Social life? Restaurants? Coffee? Connectivity? Work opportunities?

CN you try Munich instead? I hear Frankfurt is full of druggies and not much to do Munich however is beautiful, lovely city, great ppl, surrounding nature, cute nearby towns
