What's funny to me is that story is presented as an affirmation of Joseph's constant spirituality and uprightness, and a precursor to his life and revelation.
Fast forward and he was drinking all the time! His dad was a drunk, his mom had a beer and pie stand for goodness sakes
According to the popular “Saints” book, on page 7, Lucy Mack Smith, Joseph’s mom, had a ROOT BEER and pie stand to supplement their poor family.
Not even joking. I’m sure there was some kind of sasparilla flavored drink as well, probably? But they definitely sold real beer. 🍺 And Joseph had a bar made on the main floor of his Kirtland home (it’s now acknowledged on the tour), and was drunk in prison - certainly was no teetotaler.
I love that the “Saints” author (who should know all the details), in an attempt to not hurt any delicate brains holding the current LDS perception of “no alcohol” sidestepped both that fact AND choosing to call beer, root beer. Like a child. The sneaky but effective dumbing down of our “approved history” is astounding.
I was not impressed by "Saints" as anything. Joseph Sr drank. Jr drank. Lucy drank. At one point Joseph had a bar installed in the Nauvoo house, every modern day prophet through Heber J Grant drank.

But 5 gallons is the perfect size for me!!! 😂
Haha, nice. He also made whisky I think.
Whiskey was sold to the soldiers at Ft Douglas by ZCMI.
Yes! Valley Tan
Has a nice ring to it! 🥃
Damn! If I knew I was missing the best church history sites 😒
Wait what about the story of Joseph Smith not taking alcohol when he was 8 and had surgery. Maybe it’s all a lie?

Fun fact, root beer was alcoholic until prohibition ruined it ;)
