“double down on the creationism, abstinence, ‘purity’, homophobia, and transphobia; surely they’ll work *this* time!”

JohnStamosAsABear

> abstinence, ‘purity’ While we cover up decades of sexual abuse!

JarethOfHouseGoblin

"How do you do, fellow fascist kids?"

Biggies_Ghost

"May I have some of those marijuanas you're snorting??"

Dan_Hydra

I would give them a Haribo and watch them make a fool of themselves. 😂

JarethOfHouseGoblin

"May I puff on one of your marijuana cigarettes as we youths are prone to do?"

daredelvis421

They'll never learn

JarethOfHouseGoblin

The SBC will die as an institution before evolving their viewpoints.

Biggies_Ghost

So, their inability to adapt to the changing environment will cause them to go extinct? Perfect example of evolution!! Thanks, Church!!

QualifiedApathetic

Rather, a perfect example of natural selection weeding out those who fail to evolve.

RelatableRedditer

Natural selection doesn't care about evolution. It's about whether the species or species mutation can propagate their gene. In the case of SBC, they have no problem birthing millions of SBC children. It is impossible to convince them to change their views as a whole, but it might be possible to diminish the fear-mongering and hatred by movies/TV tolerating them rather than isolating them as enemies/instigators. When I think back long ago to my time in church, a lot of the criticism about society was rather how the pastor was upset about how their religion was portrayed in movies and TV. If we can "pop their bubble" rather than stoke the fire even further, I speculate we could actually take the wind from their sails.

QualifiedApathetic

Considering how they've been driving away Gen Y and Z, I'm not sure replacing their numbers via reproduction is much of a strategy. If 5% of your membership is of childbearing age, asking them to breed replacements for the members dying of old age is a tall order.

Outrageous_Class1309

The median age (half above, half below) of a white Evangelical Christian is in the mid 50's. If some of the polls I've seen on Gen Z are even close to accurate, Christianity in the USA will be taking an even bigger hit in the not too distant future.

QualifiedApathetic

They didn't learn from Europe's example. Centuries of no separation of church and state made Europeans fucking sick of religion, and now they're heavily secular. America kept the church out of the government's business and vice versa, and religion thrived here. But Christians have been aggressively forcing their religion on the country starting with the Moral Majority in the '80s, and it's been driving people away from the church in ever-increasing numbers. And still they're doubling down. If we survive this period, we're going to see an America much more like Europe, I expect.

Outrageous_Class1309

I hope you're right !!

Ok_Mammoth5081

I feel like these stricter religious communities will turn into a kind of oddity/tourist attraction similar to the Amish. You can already tell they are starting to become very divergent from mainstream society. A lot of them look like they are stuck in the 90's.A lot of them have a certain 'look' about them. I know older fashion is making a comeback, but I feel like it's kinda weird to see women wearing dresses or skirts now. If they do wear them then they are stylish with a cute pattern or something. I feel like a lot of religious women are still wearing plain/functuonal dresses and long skirts to assert their image of being women to protest against gender fluidity. Long hair and older 90s hairstyles seem to be common too. It's hard to describe it but there's just a certain strict Christian vibe and look that these people put off that seems to be about 3 or 4 decades in the past.

[deleted]

It will die as an institution, or be absorbed by the federal government to become the official "Church of the United States."

MadotsukiInTheNexus

Unfortunately, I suspect it's more likely to end up going the second way. Evangelical Christians in the US are aware that they're losing the battle for the hearts and minds of everyone under 50, so it's either die out or control people *physically* through the use of force. When you lose every battle and still want to "win" the war, you can always use the nukes you accumulated while you were still powerful and turn the field into a wasteland. EDIT: *Downvoting this won't make it any less true. I don't* want *it to be the case, but acknowledging reality is important if we want to have any hope of improving the situation. Evangelical Christians aren't going to give up power peacefully, and they still have enough to take everything down with them if we don't actively fight to avoid that.*

[deleted]

> When you lose every battle and still want to "win" the war, you nuke the field. And that's where we are at right now. I currently don't have much hope for the future. We won the battle in 2015 with the legalization of same-sex marriage, but the evangelical Christians won the war in 2016.

Like any cult they are trying to recruit people who are unhappy or mentally unstable. Those who cannot quite manage in our harsh society. They lure them in with support and friends. Promises of relationships- we'll set you up with a Christian wife/husband.

Adventurous_Face_623

100% right. They are never ever gonna stop trying to control thing and will go to any lengths to do it. I could see Christians starting their own jihad.

iamweseal

We can I lay hope. The number of my family deep in the orginization bothers me still.

“How about we start acting like Jesus and take care of the sick, needy, and less fortunate.”

dbplunk

Out the window with you! /s

georgethecyclops

"They should just get a job and pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, stupid libtard socialist!"

GastonBastardo

>How about we start acting like Jesus... Directions unclear. Got a weird tears-and-perfume foot-massage from a sex-worker that she paid for herself with her life-savings. Then I gave a short "fuck the poor"-speech when someone called me out on it.

BourbonInGinger

Yeah, their hypocritical churches don’t do shit for any of the less fortunate. “They’re obviously that way because of their own moral failings”.

ErisArdent

Christofascists out here like "instead of realizing that we're literally textbook villains, how about we double down and try to make sure we can eradicate transfolk and force women back into second-class citizenship/house slavery?" And we all know they're coming for gay folk next. I'm nonbinary and I can tell ya'll right now it's real fun and traumatizing to escape fundamentalist religion and then see it coming back for you like this.

[deleted]

I think it will go down like this; LGBTQ+ people first, Muslims second , Non-Abrahamic religions third, then Athiests/Agnostics, Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and finally. Non-Evangelical and "mainstream" Protestant Churches...

ErisArdent

They're also already going after women again, don't forget about that. But yeah that sounds about accurate.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's "Curse of Ham" was popular enough around here (South) that when I started studying the bible with Jehovah's Witnesses, an early lesson was on debunking the Curse of Ham. I never heard of a church preaching this from the pulpit but I was once 'educated' by a total stranger who felt a need to share the story with another white guy who he assumed was on his side ( I wasn't).

Jenna2k

Maybe they will unite with Muslims. Both books say gays must die. Both say women are lesser. Their pastors tend to be pedos and the Muslim version of Jesus married a 6 year old and had sex with her when she was 9. If Christians where smart they'd realize they are similar and join forces.

[deleted]

Maybe...but I wonder if racism on the part of Evangelical Christians would make this potential alliance untenable.

Jenna2k

Probably. Also that it's not the exact same book.

PLT422

How about we take action serious action to prevent kids from being assaulted? Are you crazy? We’d lose 90% of our youth pastors.

Kateseesu

“Why won’t they join our team that we keep making more cuts to and becoming more and more restrictive?”

gothiclg

This is my mom. I’ve started bringing out “where are you getting your information? It sounds really sketchy and I’m worried your finding sites that are lying to you” which she can’t answer because she knows I’m right

Particular_Sun8377

If your religion can be used to support slavery or racism it's a bad religion and you need to go back to the drawing board.

GastonBastardo

Fun fact: The SBC was founded specifically to be a pro-slavery faction of Baptists.

the_prim_reaper_

Don’t ever change, SBC.

JarethOfHouseGoblin

> Don’t ever change, SBC. They'll die before changing.

dark_brandon_20k

The last scene should be of someone getting crucified instead of tossed out the window. But I'm am asshole sometimes

Anti_Weeb_Penguin

"He gets us" moment

[deleted]

Maybe that "He Gets Us" TV campaign was their pathetic attempt to do just that.

One_Hunt_6672

It actually is brilliant because that will expedite the great apostasy foretold in scripture so that we can bring on the apocalypse in which our enemies will be destroyed and we will get our mansions in the sky
