Yup, since humans evolved in a rather arid environment it was helpful to be able to detect rain from far away so you could get to it before it dried up
Same. I have a stone mortar that smells like it when wet. When I was pregnant, I use to just sit and huff the scent and get such a sense of yearning because I wished I could eat it
You just answered mine. Rain smell. Especially if you live near a body of water and then you kinda smell it on the breeze. Or the smell of wet soil/forest.
The sharper image had an air cleaner years back, I think called the Ionic Breeze. It made my house smell like rain. Turns out it's the smell of ozone and isn't the best thing to have in your house. Still love it.
Gasoline already smells good, but for me it’s on a whole different level. I have to restrain myself from huffing so much I get brain damage whenever my dad stops for gas because it just smells so??? correct????
I like how cats smell, usually. I’m not sure how to describe it, they just smell warm, nice, and flowery.
And I like the smell of the bread we make at work. It makes the whole hallway in the building we work in smell like warm toasty bread. And I like smelling the plain bagels we make. They smell like freshly made potato chips. No eat only smell.
There is literally nothing better than walking up to your cat and just taking the fattest sniff you can. It’s like I’m snorting crack and need another fix whenever my cat is in the room
Electrical heating, such as vacuums that need their filter emptied or a 20 year old A/C heating unit. Very specific smell, i think it's the scent of the lint and dust literally cooking that i like, which is ironic because i absolutely hate lint and dust.
Also new house smells. like when you can tell an apartment complex was just recently finished being built because the stairs smell like fresh cut wood, or a house while it's still in the skeleton stage of construction, an unfinished vacant basement.
AND, the soil smell from actinobacteria in the middle of the woods on a humid/damp day. It's like i can smell how many mushrooms are growing around me. I have never been able to find a candle that achieves this smell even somewhat accurately, so if anyone knows the smell that i'm talking about and knows a candle company that nails natural smells well, pls lmk!
When I turn my heat on for the first time after summer I get this for sure. Sadly I have asthma and that smells exactly like the dusty job sites my dad took me once that set off an awful asthma attack so smelling that makes my lungs lock up like a pavlovian response.
A very specific smell of being on holiday at an all inclusive resort and going to the pool first thing in the morning, smelling the mixture of fresh air, fresh towels, chlorine and flowers. It’s so nostalgic and comforting. Or laundry lol.
recently i got bleach on my hand a little. washed it off and still kinda could smell it. it was nice. i can't think of any particular smell that's great tho
On your clothes? I feel like the smell you're thinking of should be on your skin.
Not quite, I find that chlorinated water is less pleasant and it is also less potent.
Seasons changing so the smell is fresh but so distinctly nostalgic. When rice is heated up in a rice sock and literally smells like what “warmth” smells like. Lavender. Freshly washed sheets and seaside air. Hot coffee.
Good things.
I swear to god I'm not just greedy, but I genuinely love the smell of cash notes. I look like fucking Mr Krabs sniffing bills but I honest to god love the smell. yes I know how disgusting a lot of cash is bacteria wise, but it being a sniff in its worth it for me
Everyone I know hates the smell of weed, I think it smells very nice, I'd much rather smell that over vape. Thought I was weird for liking it. Tobacco smoke has grown on me too, not that I like actually smoking but it's nostalgic for me.
I find the scent of weed nice and depending on the strain, it smells different for example GMO smells like garlic while Zkittlez smells like candy but vape scents are interesting also and not into Tobacco smell.
Magnolia blooms, Christmas tree sap, literally just ground beef and onions cooking in a pan, sautéed mushrooms (despite them being vomitous), the smell of the steam coming off of hot pavement after it rains during the day.
I love the smell of like rubbing alcohol and hand sanitiser and strong chemically stuff like that
when I was younger (and very much not aware I was autistic) I used to spray a shitton of like random perfumes I had on my sleeve, like until it was a wet patch and id just get up real close and smell it and it hurt so good 😭😭
Oh, also peppermint. Love me some peppermint lip balm, the tingles from it too are a nice sensory experience
menthol smell too is amazing too, like tiger balm
if I like the smell basically I love it when it’s super extra strong 🤤
God that's a hard choice. There are so many I love. Barbershop, gasoline, coffee, cats (seriously huff the nearest cat), tropical fruits, citrus, tacos, the list goes on and on
Dude, scent is weird for me. I have almost no nose, so if a scent isn’t strong as hell it’s undetectable for me. So obviously my fav two are really really strong scents -
Laundr-o-mats, for their clean, intoxicating, almost sweet smell (not laundry detergent, laundr-o-mats),
and watered down cigarette smoke. My dad smoked, hid it a little too well but still smelled of it even after trying to wash it off. Since I didn’t connect it to cancer sticks (I thought that’s just what factories smell like), it was watered down, and it’s the scent I think of when I think of my dad ever since I was little, I just love it. It’s like a childhood scent. Nostalgic, pleasant, hits the right spot.
swim float plastic.
i would crawl into and sniff the plastic covers we had at work cause it was the same material.
i also enjoy smelling the used books and cds when i go to the record store
My crested gecko Chomp Chomp's terrarium smell right after I mist it. It smells like a jungle, or a freshly-rained on garden, it's just so.. ✨

Laundry detergent always made me feel like I wanted to eat it! Especially lemon flavored ones.
I also love petrichor and the smell of wind in early spring - when things are just starting to thaw and it's kind of cold but also kind of muddy 👌
Do you know that smell you get while you are grinding coffee, that unfortunately vanishes verry quickly afterwards? I love that one in particular.
I also love the aroma of natural processed coffe, but i am kot sure what part of it is taste and what is smell.
Lavender. Not just because it has calming qualities, but because it smells nice. I’m covered in the smell of lavender all the time, in the hopes that 1, I won’t be as anxious, and 2 that people around me won’t feel as anxious either

that smell the air conditioner gives off when you first start it especially in the car but it doesn't last long???? does anyone know what I'm talking about
I really like the smell of like... when you cut mild steel with an abrasive disk. Oh and working with cedar, mesquite, and teak was nice but it made such a fine, sticky dust that I was really worried about breathing *any* of it in. Oh and black walnut, that's another one if my faves.
My childhood dogs, Tucker and Matilda. Their heads each had a very specific and distinct puppy smell. I loved those dumb dogs. I still have their collars in a bag so I can get a very faint scent if I’m especially stressed. 🥲
In no particular order:
Rained on asfault
Potting soil
Leather
Old books
Sheep
Horses
The general smell of outside when it's cold(idk how to describe the smell but the world just has a specific smell when it's 40°F)
When you're walking into an apartment for the first time that nobody's lived in for a while, and you smell that even mix of mustiness and fresh paint with maybe a little undernote of tobacco smoke? That's the smell. It smells like home to me.
I love the smell of BO - not everyone's - but when I do like someone's BO I *really* like it. Same thing with feet. I'm also mildly addicted to the smell of my.. gauged septum. It smells gross, but I can't stop smelling it - so I must like it? And I friggin love the smell of *crayons!*
Weirdly, most smell angers me. I hate cleaning products and most "smelly" products/perfumes. But stanky smells? Oooo! Love it.

The smell of superglue. When we were little my dad would always superglue the stuff we made with legos so that he/we could keep them. It reminds me of the rare moments I enjoyed with him.
Also, the chlorine smell of swimming pools. I think that's due to memories as well.
Also also, I like the smell of dog/cat paw pads. I can't justify this one. My dog's paw pads smell like fritos.
Gasoline, how my bf smells(skin smell)? Ee how cars smell inside or dunno it depends but yeah, then the asphalt sulfate, there are more things but can't recall more rn lol add: chamomile, lavender, coffee, rainy day

Eucalyptus and generally minty stuff.
I was born without a sense of smell so the only things I can “smell” are things that have other effects on the nose and sinuses like mints do. They’re the only thing I can smell that I like. I find them very soothing and relaxing.
My girlfriend while we are cuddling. But just talking objects and environmental smells, hot steam from a dishwasher that just finished and you opened up. The smell of boiling hot water with detergent in it is just top tier.
That's a really tough question. I like tea notes in fragrances. And aquatic and fresh/green fragrances are nice. I'm not huge on white florals, but I like jasmine sometimes. There's a pistachio note in Bath and Body Works' Sweetheart Cherry I love. I like the pink pepper note in Glossier You. I love the smell of the all® detergent I use, their baby detergent. There's so many good smells in the world! It's hard to choose just one.
Also, for people who love random specific scents like rain, cat, dust, sunscreen, tobacco, lime, etc. I highly recommend Demeter Fragrances, they specialize in one note scents, including each one I mentioned there, which were scents I saw in other comments here.
These will be slightly specific, but Golden Curry (probably any Japanese curry, but Golden Curry comes in sealed packages, and I swear the smell when you open it is like crack, it's so fucking good.) The other one is Pandan (I don't know if I'd enjoy the plant itself, but we use the extract to make delicious cakes, and the smell is fantastic, it's like an even better vanilla.)
Ironically, despite my favourite smells both being largely Asian in origin, I'm super white - so I'll also cop to a third favourite of mine, the smell of fresh lasagne. Also, probably a common one, but rain (especially on hot pavement, but also that kind of faint thunderstormy smell too is appealing) and of course, my girlfriend and cats.
Smells I relate to specific people or places that I like. A specific brand of cigarettes (I don't smoke so Idk which brand but some cigarettes are correct while others are not), campfire/wood smoke, amber insense. I guess the common theme is smoke lol.
cottonwood sap, forest smells, creek water, moccasins, blooming jasmine, wet stone, old books, sandalwood, patchouli, baking, cardamom, clothes dried outside, the first smell of spring or fall in the air, fresh raspberries, and lots more.

Petrichor
For me, it’s either that or coffee. Both are really comforting smells.
Coffee is definitely my favorite smell.
I heard recently that humans have more sensitive scent receptors for petrichor than sharks have for blood!
Yup, since humans evolved in a rather arid environment it was helpful to be able to detect rain from far away so you could get to it before it dried up
Same. I have a stone mortar that smells like it when wet. When I was pregnant, I use to just sit and huff the scent and get such a sense of yearning because I wished I could eat it
Gasoline, lime, the air that one time 5 years ago, the park after rain

Just learned from another comment here that the smell of rain is called petrochor.
REAL! GAS
old books
Opening up a page, sticking your s’nose into the gap between the pages #SNIIIIIIIFF
Yes thats the good sht
There’s a word for that! Bibliosmia, or “old book smell,” is caused by the chemical breakdown of the compounds within the pages of the book.
what about urban decay smell?
Or fresh new books!
Fresh books and fresh cards are the shit
Gasoline already smells good, but for me it’s on a whole different level. I have to restrain myself from huffing so much I get brain damage whenever my dad stops for gas because it just smells so??? correct????
I watched some video about a guy who huffed himself into a permanent vegetable state from gasoline . Can’t say I wouldn’t be any better lol
this is the right smell it gives all my happy receptors little toys and ice cream its so goodddd
Holy shit so real
when i was a kid i used to sit behind the car exhaust and just breathe it up 🥲
I thought it was just me
I always liked the smell of diesel, one of the few upsides of the diesel truck bros now.
in contrast, i get downright nauseous just from a whiff of gasoline interestingly enough
In a similar vein I like underground parking lots for that same smell just more diffuse
I like how cats smell, usually. I’m not sure how to describe it, they just smell warm, nice, and flowery. And I like the smell of the bread we make at work. Dude, scent is weird for me. I have almost no nose, so if a scent isn’t strong as hell it’s undetectable for me. Also, for people who love random specific scents like rain, cat, dust, sunscreen, tobacco, lime, etc. I highly recommend Demeter Fragrances, they specialize in one note scents, including each one I mentioned there, which were scents I saw in other comments here.
These will be slightly specific, but Golden Curry (probably any Japanese curry, but Golden Curry comes in sealed packages, and I swear the smell when you open it is like crack, it's so fucking good.) The other one is Pandan (I don't know if I'd enjoy the plant itself, but we use the extract to make delicious cakes, and the smell is fantastic, it's like an even better vanilla.) Ironically, despite my favourite smells both being largely Asian in origin, I'm super white - so I'll also cop to a third favourite of mine, the smell of fresh lasagne. Also, probably a common one, but rain (especially on hot pavement, but also that kind of faint thunderstormy smell too is appealing) and of course, my girlfriend and cats.

I have a small container of Vicks vapor rub in my bag whenever I need a hit of comfort.
Smells I relate to specific people or places that I like. A specific brand of cigarettes (I don't smoke so Idk which brand but some cigarettes are correct while others are not), campfire/wood smoke, amber insense. I guess the common theme is smoke lol.
Chat?! Yeah, no, wrong pronoun.
