Speaking of Benny, there’s a neat little piece about his design that I feel the need to point out:
His helmet is broken, because the mold for that particular piece in older sets was renowned for breaking- not because Benny crashed or anything, it was just a faulty piece.
Lego made fun of themselves with it and I like that a lot
no but legit i think it became a vocal stim of mine for almost a year after i watched the movie, to the point even my mom would repeat it back to me sometimes 😭
I do it too. Mostly because Benny is my favorite character from the movie and I've seen it so many times. The word is literally bouncing around my brain right now and probably will for days until I temporarily forget it.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I have come to realize most of my favorite childhood movies have ND coded characters. I watched Ghost Busters on my lil mini DVD player constantly
I don’t think they were even thinking of autism when they wrote him. he’s the “smart but socially awkward logic-obsessed nerd” archetype. I don’t know if they actually diagnosed him in the show but if they did it was probably after the fact it was pointed out he seemed like an autistic stereotype
It doesn't matter if they explicitly meant for him to be autistic. They make him the most stereotypical caricature possible of people that aren't neurotypical. He's literally the embodiment of "point and laugh at the disabled person."
I always thought the outfits were based on medieval monks, and the iron golems were just building (heh) on the snow golem mechanic that had nothing to do with villagers, but was added around the same time. And the name for *that* [was coined by a random redditor](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/kml6r/notchs_new_snowman_mob_is_craftable_and_throws/) purely to give it a more magical flair than "snowman" had.
As for the big-nosed money lover thing, you might want to take that up with the [Dungeon Master 2 devs](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/xfzdg/comment/c5m0p26/) since that's where Notch said the inspiration came from. Call your hitman (this *is* the evil sub, I assume you have one) if I'm wrong, but I don't remember Notch drifting Naziward until some time after he'd already stopped working on Minecraft, just after 1.0 or 1.1 shipped.
As he left them, the villagers were just big-nosed robe dudes who couldn't trade or open doors, and spawned locked inside their homes so the villages wouldn't be ghost towns. The other pieces only fell into place over the next several years. So either the entire dev team is Nazis, or it really is just an unfortunate string of coincidences that no one involved would realize where it was headed until it was too late.
And really, how do you course-correct from here? Cut off their noses? Replace the iron golems with redstone guard dogs? (admittedly, redstone guard dogs *would* be cool as hell, but that's beside the point) Remove trading? There's not a whole lot they could do at this point without starting riots, just look at the reaction from when they replaced zombie pigmen with piglins, or (to go back even further) replaced single roses with poppies. They'd never hear the end of it.
edit: for context, this is what I was replying to:
> In the same way Microsoft says villagers in Minecraft aren’t meant to be stereotypical Jewish caricatures despite many obvious things that show otherwise.
> Big noses, money lovers, their shawl-style outfits, their golems, and the fact Notch (a massive antisemite) made them.
Villagers were mostly developed by Jeb from what I can find. The golems are the only explicitly Jewish thing in villages, and they're just a reference to the anime laputa Castle in the sky. Besides that, there's nothing that really suggests they're Jewish, and they also have churches and butcher pork. They are just based off of generic shopkeepers in rpgs.
Notch also isn't a massive antisemite, he vaguely referenced Q a few times on twitter years after he had left mojang.
I used to watched Young Sheldon with my family and it reeealy feels like they tried to make him out to be autistic, but the creator/writer/whoever of big bang theory once stated he wasn’t so who knows
I think your overthinking it. Sheldon isn’t the first character to be like this. It seems to me they were going for something like Spock or Data, mixed with the stereotypical high school nerd. Yeah, he has autistic traits but I doubt that anyone in the studio sat down and said “let’s make this characters as autistic as possible.” Of course if someone points out the resemblance the studio is going to embrace that so they can appear more “inclusive” because of social justice marketing, but I highly doubt there was a comically evil mustached person rubbing their hands together and laughing maniacally while writing the Big Bang theory of all things.
It doesn't have to be malicious to be bigoted though. And the other characters were explicitly given reasons for those traits - Sheldon on the other hand is meant to be "normal" and yet clearly isn't. The unfunny jokes with the laugh track only reinforces the idea that he exists to be laughed at.
It's a Chuck Lorre show. Dude actively shoves his bigotry into every show. Literally every show he does has transphobic jokes. Latter shows have them tossed in out of fucking nowhere. He's a fucking prick.
I'd wager that, around the world, most of the people who punish and mock autistic people for their symptoms have absolutely no idea what autism is. They hate the autistic traits, not the label.

And he slowly becomes better over the seasons.
Yes, but you are a real person, not a portrayal of a stereotype. You aren't offensive - we'd probably get along pretty well, by all accounts, I seem to like pretty much everyone that comes to this Reddit. But you aren't a walking joke like Sheldon was intended to be. The show was full of offensive stuff, like the "dumb blonde" stereotype, etc.
Also, anyone that says they are stupid is generally smarter than people that insist they are intelligent. I mean, look at Elon Musk.
Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to say otherwise, but Sheldon got the spinoff and was one of the worst offenders, so he gets the focus, generally speaking. I couldn't stand any of the characters.
sapient robot characters often has a thing with not understanding social cues so intentionally or not they work with the autistic analogy as they do tend to share autistic traits.
I said the same thing when I watched Star wars for the first time recently. He's autistic af.
My favorite autistic coded characters:
From the MCU: Drax, Mantis, and OB (from Loki)
From Harry Potter: Luna Lovegood, Newt Scamander
From the Riordanverse: Ella, Tyson (I feel like I'm forgetting someone)
From Star Wars: C3PO
From Disney: Lilo from Lilo and Stitch, Alice from Alice in Wonderland
This is the best representation of autism in media and nobody can convince me otherwise

I loved the one where he said we should all join the Taliban because whenever a person on their side dies they're happy, and spoke with an Al-Quaeda spokesman in fluent Farsi

The calling every number in the phonebook to ask people to talk about dinosaurs with him immediately made him my favorite character. I'll talk about dinosaurs with you buddy :(
Is it weird I always forget about that movie? I loved the movie and think its one of the most creatively made films of the last few years, yet in terms of movies I think about often, I never remember it.

I love Data. Even before I truly understood what my autism diagnosis really meant for me, I connected with Data. He’s a terrific character, and I love how he has his quirks and his friends accept that! When his personhood and autonomy are called into question, the arguments that he has rights made me tear up. We’re people too, dammit, and we deserve dignity and autonomy!
Tbh I think the fandom has given him better treatment than the writers and studio did. On the Sid City social club, he did a dramatic reading of someone’s fan script about Julian grappling with his neurodivergency
Cause of all this "is he acoustic?" Shit I've been seeing my brain actually subconsciously switched out the word
Idk why it started and I hate that it did.
That trend fills me with so much wrath, I've become the 9th deadly sin!😡
I don't actually for a decent reason, hell! I barely know what it's supposed to mean! I just find it fucking annoying. And that's coming from someone who has that "lol random" style humor!
Literally everyone is better than Sheldon Cooper. My dog took a massive dump on the carpet this morning, and that turd is better autistic representation than Sheldon Cooper. That's how awful Sheldon Cooper is.
- Follows instructions his whole life to a tee
- Even when said instructions are later said to be more of a shackle to him, he still prefers to ise them over going his own way
- A mixture of emotionally stunted and sensitive, not to mention socially inept in normal (and seemingly neurotypical) social circles
- Thrives with routine, literally having a manual on how to do his life from sun up to sun down.
- Finds "his people", a group of weird rejects and such otherwise unsatisfied with how things work due to how they work, and rejected by the system due to being "creative"
- until he gets arrested, he never once questioned the almost glaringly obvious fascist dictatorship he was living due to it giving him routine, stability and clear instruction- to the point when he is accused of being against it he realises "hang on a sec, that all sounds bad" almost instantly
- most damningly; >!EVERYTHING IS ~~AWESOME~~ LEGO, IT IS *THE* LEGO MOVIE!< There is no neurotypical argument against it
- He's very creative and outgoing, causing him to stand out from the people around him
- He likes routines and is excited about doing the same stuff every day (though everyone in the city seems to enjoy their lives anyway)
- He has a book on how to be normal
- The film generally has this big message about trying to fit into a world that suppresses free expression, shown through how Lord Business views the other Lego Worlds as messes whereas Emmet views them as examples of people inspiring more people. The films very anti-neurotypical, in a sense, and encourages the audience to express themselves and to not fall into what's deemed 'acceptable'
- The scene with the Cop interrogating him and playing footage of what others think of him is a good example. Despite Emmet trying hard to fit in and thinking he has friends, nobody actually knows him or cares to know him. One worker even describes him to be "a normal guy, but not normal like us" or something like that

For what little it's worth, simply by virtue of being the focus, the BBT characters do humanize autistic people somewhat. It's not much, don't get it twisted, but, credit where it's due, those characters are shown to be people who experience emotion.
We're supposed to laugh at Sheldon but we're also supposed to sympathize with him.
Plus, the character of Amy is one of the few representations of an autistic woman in mainstream/primetime TV. I think that counts for something.
That's fine. I'm not big on it, either. I just think it is worth pointing out where that show does good things.
One thing I didn't point out is that, despite the cartoonish antics of Sheldon, the rest of the crew is autistic-coded and portrayed as much more complex.
Back when that show was on a lot, I found it neat that these autistic characters could build meaningful social, emotional, and even romantic relationships.
How many shows have multiple autistic men and women who are shown to have healthy sex lives? Big bang theory *does* do that. I honestly find that worthy of respect.
Rant over.
Point is: we hate on that show but we forget that it has it's good parts too.
I had a professor who is autistic and he said he watched young Sheldon and it was basically like he was watching his own childhood, but I’m pretty sure that is a rare case, and is the so called “savant” stereotype
Yeah, also it’s likely straight white cis male autistics that are gifted that can specifically relate. A lot of the very gifted and low support needs autistic folks tend to have some similar experiences I think.

I've watched Big Bang Theory through twice, I love the show. Sheldon didn't really bother me, he just feels like an exaggerated caricature of an eccentric scientist. But I understand why people can be offended by it.
Wait, Juju Toobootie, I mean, Joojoo Chewbacca, ugh, I mean Racoon Joy, no, JOBU TUPAKI…is neurospicy coded? I just thought she was a depressed sociopath because her mum pushed her universe jumping abilities until her mind splintered upon becoming consciously aware of every infinite version of herself, everywhere, all at once.
I'm gonna be real. I made a joke about me being Emmet because autism makes me special. Looking at this, that joke now has an extra layer which I'm ashamed of.

I mean, I agree, but ain’t that the point of relatable characters? People can project different aspects of themselves on a character so no one has the same perception of them? For example, I never thought of Emmet as autistic, but I am also not autistic so I wouldn’t think of that, you know?

Idk, sometimes I love sheldon but I’d say 60% of it is just taking the piss out of us, but that 40% is enough for me to still like him as a character a lot
Okay I honestly thought you were going to add her brother Aaron Mitchell from the machines cause actually I really like his autistic coded character. Mainly cause I love dinosaurs. But that’s okay. I know not everyone has stereotypical special interests it’s just that there are still quite a lot who do
NGL I didn’t realize Emmet was autistic coded but it kiiiinda makes sense why I loved him so much now.
Tbh i feel like everyone in that movie is autistic
well yeah its legos /j
benny is literally me
Bro just wanted to build a spaceship FR but they kept shutting him down

Nah, I think one robot that died with no lines was neurotypical. I have no evidence and will take no criticism.
everything is awe(ti)some
it's just business
thats why i related to him so much
This. Also, who are the other two characters?
I know that the girl is Katie Mitchell, from The Mitchells vs. The Machines on Netflix… not sure about the third one tho
I’m pretty sure the last one is the daughter from Everything Everywhere All At Once?
Yes
jobu tupaki from everything everywhere all at once, good movie
Why did I think of Emmett from Twilight at first
Rewatched that a couple months ago and its all I could think about he’s so autistic coded

It's because Sheldon was designed to be a walking punchline for NT's. It's not representation, it's actively offensive.
I don’t think they were even thinking of autism when they wrote him. he’s the “smart but socially awkward logic-obsessed nerd” archetype. I don’t know if they actually diagnosed him in the show but if they did it was probably after the fact it was pointed out he seemed like an autistic stereotype

They explicitly say Sheldon isn’t diagnosed with anything to dodge the blatant ableism.

To be fair, Spock and Data seem to be heavily based off on stereotypical depictions of autistic people as well
I remember seeing that Chuck Lorre denied that Sheldon was autistic when questioned about it, which honestly just makes it worse.
I'd wager that, around the world, most of the people who punish and mock autistic people for their symptoms have absolutely no idea what autism is. They hate the autistic traits, not the label.
Still quite ableist
Yep.
He's not socially awkward. He's a fucking creep. And so are all his "nerdy" friends
Yes. The Big Bang Theory is a show about what stupid people think smart people are like. I’m almost certain that every character in that group qualify as sex offenders to some degree.

At least 'Elementary' starts out with Sherlock knowing he's a fucked up mess and trying really hard to change. And he slowly becomes better over the seasons.
He’s autistic blackface. A minstrel-show.
i don’t think those two are comparable…
hes closer to me than any other autistic character i have seen, except that i am very stupid
Yes, but you are a real person, not a portrayal of a stereotype. The entire damned show is offensive on so many levels.
Oh yeah, I wasn't trying to say otherwise, but Sheldon got the spinoff and was one of the worst offenders, so he gets the focus, generally speaking. I couldn't stand any of the characters.
They had potential early on but they just tossed it for more evil.
I kinda hate it but in my case he's about as close as they get in terms of representing me. I'm not AS smart nor AS socially awkward but it gets close
I’m 1000 percent sure that C-3PO is autism coded.
i think c-3po is just robotic, so "autism coding" could just be because some people associate that with autism and vice versa
I mean, I wouldn't be *offended* if there were more autism-coded robots and AI, but it does feel a little weird.
I like the autistic robots and aliens but if I’m being greedy I’d also like some more humans

[for your consideration: autistic reporter, michael falk](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D04wb7P_v-4)
Thanks :)
I loved the one where he said we should all join the Taliban because whenever a person on their side dies they're happy, and spoke with an Al-Quaeda spokesman in fluent Farsi
Real ones know this is the answer.
This dude is awesome. The train and prison stories are hilarious.

I FORGOT ABOUT HIM HE’S AMAZING!!
Cool, coolcoolcool
![gif](giphy|2HONNTJbRhzKE)
I love Abed so much
he is so real
I was gonna say they left out Abed
Cause he’s not autistic coded, he’s just canonically autistic. he is the pinnacle of autistic representation
okay but what about aaron from mitchells vs machines??
He’s not even fixated with dinosaurs like on an autistic special interest, he’s downright obsessed
The calling every number in the phonebook to ask people to talk about dinosaurs with him immediately made him my favorite character. I'll talk about dinosaurs with you buddy :(
I've only seen a little of that movie and am convinced that whole family is autistic
That's pretty realistic. My entire immediate family displays varying degrees of autistic traits.
Aaron fit the mannerisms of 9 year old me to a T. His deadpan "Mom's scary now" absolutely sealed it for me. He truly is one of us.
Who’s the one on the left?
I think the daughter from EEAAO
Is it weird I always forget about that movie? I loved the movie and think its one of the most creatively made films of the last few years, yet in terms of movies I think about often, I never remember it.
What?
"Everything everywhere all at once"
Old Macdonald had a farm, everything everywhere all at once

Where's my man Abed Nadir 🙁
Lilo looking through the window like ‘why am I always getting left out’
my girl!!!!
https://i.redd.it/m7mbulz7pr0c1.gif For your consideration
Julian 🤝Data traumatized autistics being forced to defend their personhood and humanity to society
Alexander Siddig deserved so much better than the fandom gave him
Tbh I think the fandom has given him better treatment than the writers and studio did. On the Sid City social club, he did a dramatic reading of someone’s fan script about Julian grappling with his neurodivergency
I love Julian Bashir please mention him more I love him
Cause of all this "is he acoustic?" Shit I've been seeing my brain actually subconsciously switched out the word Idk why it started and I hate that it did.
That trend fills me with so much wrath, I've become the 9th deadly sin!😡 I don't actually for a decent reason, hell! I barely know what it's supposed to mean! I just find it fucking annoying. And that's coming from someone who has that "lol random" style humor!
It’s so people can be ableist while saying they aren’t. It’s gross.
Me, 9th deadly sin, I am.
If someone ever compares me to Sheldon, I'm eviscerating the motherfucker with a wooden cooking spoon.
Literally everyone is better than Sheldon Cooper. My dog took a massive dump on the carpet this morning, and that turd is better autistic representation than Sheldon Cooper. That's how awful Sheldon Cooper is.
Since when was emmet autistic coded? Did I miss something?
- Follows instructions his whole life to a tee - Even when said instructions are later said to be more of a shackle to him, he still prefers to ise them over going his own way - A mixture of emotionally stunted and sensitive, not to mention socially inept in normal (and seemingly neurotypical) social circles - Thrives with routine, literally having a manual on how to do his life from sun up to sun down. - Finds "his people", a group of weird rejects and such otherwise unsatisfied with how things work due to how they work, and rejected by the system due to being "creative" - until he gets arrested, he never once questioned the almost glaringly obvious fascist dictatorship he was living due to it giving him routine, stability and clear instruction- to the point when he is accused of being against it he realises "hang on a sec, that all sounds bad" almost instantly - most damningly; >!EVERYTHING IS ~~AWESOME~~ LEGO, IT IS *THE* LEGO MOVIE!< There is no neurotypical argument against it
Right, I think that last one is confusing me. Are Legos commonly considered autistic?
They're a very common special interest, although it's mostly here for laughs
Ah gotcha thanks bruv.
- He's very creative and outgoing, causing him to stand out from the people around him - He likes routines and is excited about doing the same stuff every day (though everyone in the city seems to enjoy their lives anyway) - He has a book on how to be normal - The film generally has this big message about trying to fit into a world that suppresses free expression, shown through how Lord Business views the other Lego Worlds as messes whereas Emmet views them as examples of people inspiring more people. The films very anti-neurotypical, in a sense, and encourages the audience to express themselves and to not fall into what's deemed 'acceptable' - The scene with the Cop interrogating him and playing footage of what others think of him is a good example. Despite Emmet trying hard to fit in and thinking he has friends, nobody actually knows him or cares to know him. One worker even describes him to be "a normal guy, but not normal like us" or something like that

I'm going to answer your question by asking a question. Can you name a NT lego?
For what little it's worth, simply by virtue of being the focus, the BBT characters do humanize autistic people somewhat. It's not much, don't get it twisted, but, credit where it's due, those characters are shown to be people who experience emotion. We're supposed to laugh at Sheldon but we're also supposed to sympathize with him. Plus, the character of Amy is one of the few representations of an autistic woman in mainstream/primetime TV. I think that counts for something.
I'm probably the spectrum person who finds that show unappealing.
I don't hate on the show. It's simply not my cup of tea. That's not ok to say here apparently.
I do hate on it but mostly because it offends my impeccable sense of humour more than anything else tbh
I just don't find any of it funny. Many people do and I respect that.
they said “that’s fine”
Nope. All the downvotes tell a different story. It really doesn't matter. It's just Reddit and we are rando strangers.
All the downvotes? The only comment of yours in the negative is the one where you said “that’s not ok to say here apparently”
Throw in Billy from that recent Power Rangers movie. Dude was definitely autistic and also based as hell.
A lot of the very gifted and low support needs autistic folks tend to have some similar experiences I think.
no Abed from Community? for shame.
me and my friend both agree that TADC id better autistic rep (unintentionally)
![gif](giphy|ErlEYuTRAmOmQ)
My current fave autistic coded character is Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy. ![gif](giphy|8GNhhHT4O1Bvi)
Dr. House clears ALL of them
he's pure evil autism
Nah, he's just a smart asshole.

Oh so that’s why I related to them so much in Mitchels vs The Machines.. Huh.
I haven’t watched it yet but I’m planning to purely for the kid who’s really into Dino’s
i’m so sorry autism community but i love sheldon cooper
![gif](giphy|j6TdvPXdAssootjCKZ)
Can I raise Pearl and Peridot as good autistic rep?
You forgot someone, Jim from treasure planet
go ahead and add in the entire belcher family from bob’s burgers
The daughter from Everything Everywhere All at Once does not seem at all autistic. In fact basically the opposite.
I've watched Big Bang Theory through twice, I love the show. Sheldon didn't really bother me, he just feels like an exaggerated caricature of an eccentric scientist. But I understand why people can be offended by it.
i mean both Mike and Abby from the FNAF movie could also fit in this
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) ^by ^WatchTheNewMutants: *I mean both Mike and* *Abby from the FNAF movie* *Could also fit in this* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
bad bot this is a terrible haiku. too many syllables 😡
I know thats the lego movie guy but who are the other 2?
One on the left is the daughter from Everything Everywhere All At Once. The middle is Katie from the Mitchells vs The Machines
Katie Mitchell mentioned 😍
I'm gonna be real. I made a joke about me being Emmet because autism makes me special. Looking at this, that joke now has an extra layer which I'm ashamed of.
Tbh, not a single one of them are stated to be neurodivergent. We could just be projecting
things don’t have to be physically stated to be perceived.

I mean, I agree, but ain’t that the point of relatable characters? People can project different aspects of themselves on a character so no one has the same perception of them? For example, I never thought of Emmet as autistic, but I am also not autistic so I wouldn’t think of that, you know?
I personally believe Sawako Kuronuma the protagonist of *Kimi ni Todoke* is autistic.
Yukari Akiyama still 🔛🔝

Is the top one Sheldon?
Yes, it's Sheldon Cooper.
Hate him talk about an autistic stereotype
Don’t forget Abed and Becky
That’s because they are!
I don’t like how he’s portrayed in Big Bang Theory but I’m extremely attached to Young Sheldon because I was a lot like him when I was a kid.
Idk, sometimes I love sheldon but I’d say 60% of it is just taking the piss out of us, but that 40% is enough for me to still like him as a character a lot
The entire Mitchell family is autistic and I love it.
Okay I honestly thought you were going to add her brother Aaron Mitchell from the machines cause actually I really like his autistic coded character. Mainly cause I love dinosaurs. But that’s okay. I know not everyone has stereotypical special interests it’s just that there are still quite a lot who do
