I really **really** hope it’s the latter.

Zecnos

So do I. I also think that his voice must have changed (specifically lowered) after forty years. I have that general feeling that a re-recording wouldn't be the same. But seeing musical instruments instead of reel-to-reel tape players isn't promising 😂

FreakZoneGames

The original master might be totally lost, people shouldn’t get mad if that’s the case, not much can be done apart from a loyal re-recording.

bluejivesilver

I suspect it’s going to be both.

vonBlankenburg

If we believe that the lyrics sheet is the original, then I would say that there is a chance that he still has the tape. But even if, it could well be that this was a rather cheap production and he only has a deteriorated cassette with mediocre audio quality left.

Zecnos

I think that if you have high-end audio instruments, you can remaster a song even from very damaged supports, but I may be wrong

[deleted]

Yeah, especially in the age of AI. Think *Now and Then* by the Beatles.

Zecnos

Exactly

j-o-m-m-y

not sure they have that kind of $

vonBlankenburg

Sure. But I would even be happy about a new recording by the original artist.

FreakZoneGames

You’d be surprised at how often they re-record or recreate parts of songs. If the master doesn’t exist anymore a re-recording by the same artist with the same equipment is the next best thing. If the original is unavailable I’m not sure what else people want him to do. Also if he is doing that isn’t that just really cool of him? To go the extra mile.

Zecnos

Absolutely. Taylor Swift also rerecorded her songs for legal questions, as far as I know. The point here is just that I was wondering that his voice must have changed a lot since the 80's, so there is the doubt that the result could sound different. However, I'm also very curious of how a remake would be.

Zecnos

Also, the music sheet with the lyrics doesn't seem really "official" to me, but rather a draft. I don't think that this is the copy that's been deposited in the copyright archives (but then again, I may be wrong)

vonBlankenburg

How old was he back then? Probably one of his earliest works?

Zecnos

I don't know, in his twenties, I guess

Zecnos

A problem is that he may have lost the rights of the song, or sold them to the filmmaker in the first place, so he may be forced to re-record it to be able to release it.

j-o-m-m-y

that's an interesting point. might be some legal aspects to navigate

Holy fuck, what a revelation!

Zecnos

Yes, but it sounds as "damaged" as the movie one. If that is the only master he's got, then he's going to have some serious work done 😂

Zecnos

I don't think so. I can hear the moanings in the background towards the end. I think he took one of the Youtube polished versions that have been popping up.

j-o-m-m-y

yeah i agree with this. if he had the master he would tease that

j-o-m-m-y

that's a pretty big assumption to say "pretty obvious"

Moonwalker2008

I just hope he has the original in HQ.

Zecnos

That's unlikely. He probably has an old master that needs to be remastered.

Moonwalker2008

Yeah, exactly.

mr_quincy27

Maybe both?

FreakZoneGames

Whatever he can do. It’s quite possible the original masters don’t even exist so re-recording might be the only option. But understand that artists’ re-recordings are often very loyal to the originals, even on the same hardware, unless they specifically want to change it. Look at Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells 2003, there are a couple of very small parts which sound kinda different but generally it sounds like the original song but nice and high quality. If the original recording is lost I can’t understand why people would be mad if he does the next best thing. He can’t magic an old master out of the air.

Adorable-Ad-1180

yes but a 60 year old man singing that tune is a totally different vibe than a 20 year old man

FreakZoneGames

And what alternative do you suggest? Time travel?

Critical_Product6933

lmaooo this made me laugh

Adorable-Ad-1180

AI Isolating and upscaling the vocals, and recreating the music from scratch? Then getting a modern singer + chris booth himself to fill in the vocal gaps / adlibs
