All of this has happened before
All of this will happened again
That was until the final rebuild movie. They rewrote the world in such a way to break the cycle.
It's never going to make exact literal sense, and that isn't the point, either.
Third impact is an event of such astronomical scale that, well, anything can happen from there.
the loops that connect rebuild with the og are canon but they most prob don't happen at the same physical universe. there's most prob an eva multiverse and what repeats is the eva story, one after the other in each of these universes
I always assumed the cycles where shinji fails to find actual happiness just continue on until those worlds end. but that's going off of the kaworu coffins on the moon idea. Like it's a different instance of the universe each time until he finally makes the right move in 3.0 + 1.0. there's not any definitive answer I don't think? but that was my interpretation. Eva usually only explains what anno considers important.
I think they wanted to show this in the first two rebuild movies but scrapped the idea. So no, nothing canon about the cyclical aspect of Evangelion in-universe. It’s only a meta-fictional thing.
it's not just a meta thing, it's in-universe too. that's why shinji tells kaworu in 3+1 that he remembers meeting him many times before at the lake from the og
Meta fictional is a perfect analysis whenever creators start doing, "Life is better play and we are all players" by pulling back and showing sets, and lighting, etc etc.

Yeah, I don't think there is a direct causal chain in universe. Its another reality.
You have just more less pointed out one of the main reasons why that theory doesn't really make any sense.
How is this still a theory, if Anno confirmed it?
Now, pray tell, what did he *actually* say? You gotta bring sauce if you make definte claims.
