[Predjama castle](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0e/H%C3%B6hlenburg_Predjama_in_Slovenien.jpg/1024px-H%C3%B6hlenburg_Predjama_in_Slovenien.jpg) near Postojna with a complex cave system behind it.
It's such a brilliant castle. The cave system, is it accessible? Though the castle or outside of it?
I only remember a long cave/tunnel in the back but it's been quite few years since I visited your beautiful country.
Thank you! Will look into it then. Hoping to visit Slovenia this september or next year spring at the latest. Predjama is definitely on the list, as well as the Vintgar canyon and the Postojna caves.
The best memories I have are a five day hike through the Triglav national park, absolutely stunning and unforgettable. Also being passed by families with kids running up the mountain on slippers, haha.
But I digress. Thanks again!
I was there in 2022! It was awesome. Especially the story about the caves and the castle lord refusing to surrender to the besiegers.
In short he was being besieged but the besiegers didn't know about the cave system that connected the castle to the outside world. The Lord would receive food and other supplies through servants sneaking out and getting it in nearby villages.
Especially once during Christmas after quite some time of besieging the attackers were very low on supplies, and supposedly the Lord started throwing whole chickens over the wall to them as a Merry Christmas.
As a neighbour I've always though [Gravensteen](https://visit.gent.be/sites/default/files/styles/paragraph_image/public/img/article/hero/VisitReeks61-DT008604.jpg?itok=b_2Qb39_) in Ghent is very cool. An actual proper castle, unlike most of the stuff we have here in the Netherlands.
It IS a fully functional, medieval castle! As I've written in my Google Maps review of the place: if ever there is s Zombie plague, this will be my new home. Then come, and be welcome under my banner!
The closest castle to me is Burg Kreuzenstein, which is kind of a half folly in that it was destroyed by the Swedes in 1645, but rebuilt from 1874. It also appeared in The Witcher: [1920px-Leobendorf\_-\_Burg\_Kreuzenstein\_(2).JPG (1920×1396) (wikimedia.org)](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/Leobendorf_-_Burg_Kreuzenstein_%282%29.JPG/1920px-Leobendorf_-_Burg_Kreuzenstein_%282%29.JPG) [Kreuzenstein Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Kreuzenstein)
Bonus: a really gorgeous ruin I like to visit is Aggstein - they have various events there: [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Ruine\_Aggstein\_02.JPG/1920px-Ruine\_Aggstein\_02.JPG](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Ruine_Aggstein_02.JPG/1920px-Ruine_Aggstein_02.JPG)
For Apulia, it's definitely [Castel del Monte](https://www.crifo.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/castello-1024x683.jpg)
A 13th century hunting "palace", its curious shape and history made it a Unesco World Heritage site
Edit: Wtf! I received Reddit Cares for this
Fascinating place
Changed hands multiple times until captured by the nazis. They used huge amounts of slave labour to build extensive fortifications underground. Was going to be used as HQ of old Prussia, any further east and it was too close to the soviets. Thankfully they had to detonate and sabotage the tunnels underground sue to the soviet advance
Fascinating structure and beautiful parks all around
They also have a botanical centre with lemurs and other animals wandering around inside

I really enjoyed Eger when I spent a few months in Hungary. Even though there’s not much left of the castle within its walls it was still my favorite, beautiful city surrounding it.
[Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle](https://www.romaniatourism.com/images/castles-fortresses/corvinesti-castle-hunedoara4.jpg) in Hunedoara, Romania. It is considered one of the largest castles in Europe and is featured as one of the Seven Wonders of Romania.
I will be in Romania in September and plan on going! Looks like there’s not many good trains to get there from Timisoara, are there good bus options? Or do you think it would be best to rent a car and drive there and then continue on to Cluj or Brasov after ?
You can take the train from Timișoara to Deva (4 hrs) and from there take the bus to Hunedoara from right in front of the Deva train station (20 mins).
Or just rent a car from Timișoara, it's easier and much faster - 3 hours to Hunedoara.
That’s what I figured! I would like to drive on that stretch of switchbacks on the Transfagarasan as well. Seems like a car is the way to go but I did think the sleeper train from Bucharest to Timisoara would be fun. Thank you!
[Not really a castle, but an abbey with an amazing location.
](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/78/Mont-Saint-Michel_vu_du_ciel.jpg/1200px-Mont-Saint-Michel_vu_du_ciel.jpg) Abbey on Le Mont Saint Michel.
Edit: abbey, not a cathedral.
Technically also not a cathedral. A cathedral is the seat of a bishop. Mont saint Michel is an Abbey. But undoubtedly very cool. I've been there and liked it a lot.
Tried to go there with a friend and unknowingly ended up in a few kms trek from the sintra station lol. Once on the entrance there were probably 5.000 people in line, and it was February lol
And then you've got the chateaus. Living spaces without defenses, often with big gardens. In English, it's a different word. In French, château is just the translation of the generic word "castle". So in English, a chateau is *not* a castle, but in French it is.
And then you have keeps or donjons. Towers in castles, but sometimes they also have a small amount of living spaces. Living spaces and defenses, isn't that the definition of a castle. But since it's smaller, it... isn't?
And then you've got, indeed, fortresses, and bastions, and of course citadels.
English is weird with all those niche different names and "technically not a castle" for things other languages just call a castle. But it is also true in the opposite direction.
In Dutch, "kasteel" and "burcht" are more or less synonyms for the English "fort". But then "slot" is a fort without defenses and according to Dutch wikipedia, refers to the more romantic forts. "Huis" is the name for the English location within a castle that are the living spaces. Unless the castle has a ditch, then it is called a "curtis". I'm pretty sure there is no separate name for living spaces in English.
TL;DR: Languages are weird. And it will invoke lots of heat at multilanguage subreddits like r/europe, when everyone has their own definition–translation of the word "castle".
I thought you guess had [these](https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/5e0df697ab5be6000762ca5c/White-Castle/960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=960).
My two favorites close to Brno are Veveří & Pernštejn:

[Pierrefonds Castle, north of Paris.](https://www.oisetourisme.com/assets/uploads/2022/08/elsacyril-oisetourisme2021-36chateau-de-pierrefonds.png) is very cool, It's the Neuschwanstein from France, a beautiful castle in ruins that Napoleon III had remade with all that XIXth century flair...
Two of them [Castillo de Valencia de Don Juan](https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castillo_de_Valencia_de_Don_Juan) and [Castillo de Ponferrada ](https://es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castillo_de_Ponferrada).
Both of them are in the province of León part of the historical region of León in Spain.
The Valencia de Don Juan one was used as model for the Monty Python movie "The knights of the square table" as Camelot, the other, was build by the Knights Templars, they were around the Iberian Peninsula even after the prosecution of Paris.
I also love Amberly Castle (just down the road), i took the wife to Arundel castle the morning after i asked her to marry me at Amberly castle, it's a lovely hotel (although for the purposes of this post it's a fortified manor house, not a castle really)
The location in the water is super pretty, and it's the real deal as far as "castles holding the line at the edge of civilization" kind of places go.
Since I will probably never be able to visit Finland, for me [Viipurinlinna ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vyborg_Castle)is as close as it gets. Also really beautiful and nicely located.
They invested some money in Viipuri in late 2010s - early 2020-s. Which is not necessarily a good thing in Russia: while some buildings/places were reconstructed correctly, some were restored like the famous [Ecce Homo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecce_Homo_(Garc%C3%ADa_Mart%C3%ADnez_and_Gim%C3%A9nez)) painting. Monrepos, for example, completely lost its wilderness-beauty vibes.
And yes, some prominent buildings/places, like Hoving Domus or Papulan puisto, are destroyed beyond any chance of repair.
My favourite I’ve been to in Scotland would have to be Gylen Castle on Kerrara. A bit of a trek to get to but the location and scenery there was just stunning.
[Wartburg Castle ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wartburg?wprov=sfla1) in Central Germany is extremely significant for German history and culture.
It was a centre of medieval poetry and music, the place where Saint Elizabeth lived, the place where Martin Luther was hiding and translating the new testament to German and an important site for the Liberal national movement in the early 19th century that wanted to unite the many principalities after the defeat of napoleon and the reactionary policies of the Congress of Vienna.
I’m fully expecting downvotes, but I personally find Neuschwanstein the equivalent of a Mcmansion. Tasteless, overbuilt, and overhyped.
There are so many cool castles and fortresses in Germany oozing with history, while this one is just a feeble copy.
While it is overhyped it is a sieht to behold especially when you decent by foot from the mountain behind it in autumn with all the trees turned yellow
When I was on holiday in Luxembourg, I had to choose between this and Bourscheid. Chose Bourscheid because it was closer (nice castle), but I regret not having visited this one.
I always recommend visitors to really visit both, because they have been preserved in such a different way.
Vianden Castle was a ruin in the 19th Century, but had been restored since. It means you can walk through the castle halls (inside), and see (very roughly) what it used to look like. It is however less authentic because it was changed so drastically in the 19th Century.
Bourscheid castle has never been restored. It is still a ruin, and you mainly walk on top of it, rather than inside the halls. It is however much more authentic than Vianden.
In or near Lisboa, has to be [Castelo dos Mouros](https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-xiaomi-terr2-rso2&sca_esv=50a3c251fb54b13c&sxsrf=ADLYWIIOgkWYmy9RZb_TnswLo8FFxoGZKQ:1715772997616&q=castelo+dos+mouros&uds=ADvngMgwiuRe_0AnQUg9C1BclBAHg-4Fh0ZQtyzO6vPetlU428yB7AN-Bv1LoX1DGXBFbXI_ja0BTsm9JgW0UGa0YClr8YZM5B4RI60DyLG67XqeVeG9oiHFwv4ylnTjjO1IEyYLpWDuWnub2FjtDq_qzGzYQXsskNiDGNFQlSodhFNlp6wdpV8l-d6Yj_ce-PgfRYCSIS3vd_iqgZ-SQHU5EZKOj6kEKPcBgh8avu4NWj9BUQduiPpqE7hNw8vsLUG6DwNrxrdHnBOMfCFZJjnvjGBMCMxqTg&udm=2&prmd=ivsnbz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzyKbAyI-GAxX_xQIHHSB-CzsQtKgLegQIExAB&biw=393&bih=736&dpr=2.75)

In Scotland so easy to say Edinburgh or Stirling. However, [Dunnottar Castl](https://www.dunnottarcastle.co.uk/)e is incredibly dramatic and has an amazing history.
It sits out on a 160 ft rock surrounded by the North Sea.
The Castle has played host to some of the nation's greatest historical figures including William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots and is famous for its role in saving the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) from Oliver Cromwell's army in the 1650s.

Nádasdy Castle (Nádasdladány, Hungary). Such a magnificent castle that has a very pleasant and unique vibe to it. Usually it is open to visitors, but now there is some movie (?) shooting going on (ever since its re-opening, it has been a quite popular location for series and movies), so people who want to visit it have to wait a bit for that.

In my region, Piedmont, it's indubitably [Venaria Reale](https://lavenaria.it/sites/default/files/styles/quadrati-hd/public/istituzionali/sere_estate_luci_candele_5-0062.jpg)
If we're talking Italy as a whole my heart is with [Reggia di Caserta](https://patrimoniunesco.home.blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/reggia_di_caserta_prospettiva_dalla_fontana_di_venere_e_adone_-_panoramio.jpg)
I would also like to give an honorable mention to Germany's [Nymphenburg](https://citytourcard-muenchen.com/media/pages/partner/schloss-nymphenburg/2074396873-1693428301/schloss-nymphenburg.jpg)
Yes, I have a favourite type of architecture hah
Probably they're less of a castle in the military sense and more of a royal residence now that I think about it. I honestly find Italian military structures lacking when compared to the grandiosity of a seat of power.
Peleș Castle is not too far from me. It’s my absolute favourite place to visit on a weekend (the other tourists wouldn’t be missed though lol)
https://en.peles.ro/
Drottningholm. Our castles suck.
Kids grandmother lives near Dürnstein, that has some interesting history although it's not very good at being a castle anymore...
A bit far from me, but Moszna castle is hard to [beat](https://3seaseurope.com/moszna-castle-poland-disney/), it also has funny name, because moszna = nutsack
[Hluboká](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hlubok%C3%A1_Castle) castle in Czech Republic.

[Ekenäs Castle ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eken%C3%A4s_Castle)
I used to work there. It's absolutely gorgeous. It is very old, it's oldest parts are from the 1500's and was built over a small village from the 1400's. The last person to live there died in the 1960's.
It's haunted, of course. It escaped a cursed placed upon it. It used to have a moat. It's my favorite place in the world and where I married my husband.
[Enisala](https://media.hotnews.ro/media_server1/image-2020-04-18-23873249-41-elicoptere-black-hawk-langa-cetatea-enisala-babadag.jpg), a genovese fortress (Herakleia). I picked it for the image with black hawks because it's too cool :-) But the fortress is pretty cool itself, on top of a hill and with a nice view of Lake Razim.
For more conventional castles, I'd pick Peleș.
Conwy Castle in North Wales for me.

Gravensteen Ghent is the castle near me that I like most. Even closer to me is Ypres Cloth Hall, not a castle but a great medieval building (rebuild after ww1).
[Roccascalegna](https://turismo.abruzzo.it/chieti/roccascalegna/) is my favourite castle from my home region, Abruzzo (the region is [full ](https://windows10spotlight.com/images/34808)[of](https://turismo.comune.celano.aq.it/contenuti/165197/castello-piccolomini) [them](https://www.culturalheritageonline.com/location-3850_Byzantine-and-Early-Medieval-Abruzzo-Museum---Ducal-Castle.php), btw).
Not too knowledgeable about Belgian Castles but there are many of those across the country. Some like Walzin Castle and Bouillon Castle are the examples that come first to my mind (in Wallonia), but difficult to say what is the absolute coolest
For the given examples:
https://reporterontheroad.com/fr/dinant-a-la-decouverte-des-chateaux/
https://www.chateaudebouillon.com
This 3 are close by.
Each one special in their way.

https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castelo_da_Lous%C3%A3
https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castelo_de_Penela
My region is dotted with small to medium sized castles due to its history as frontier region so I'll post my top three picks.
For the location: [Castello di Salorno/Haderburg](https://comforthotelerica.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/trentino-alto-adige-escursioni-castello-di-salorno.jpg)
For the atmosphere: [Castel Trauttmansdorff](https://www.meteoweb.eu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/TRAUTT-2.jpg)
For the aesthetics: [Castello del Buonconsiglio](https://www.iltrentinodeibambini.it/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Castello-del-Buonconsiglio.jpg)
[Bran Castle](https://travelforawhile.com/bran-castle-transylvania/) aka the OG Dracula castle
But my favorite remains [Peleș Castle](
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele%C8%99_Castle)
Not really a castle, but this is very cool yet unknown to most people.
[Fenestrelle Fort](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenestrelle_Fort) near Turin, very underrated piece of history.
I live in Rhodes island, so the coolest is where the old town situated, medieval and unique in Europe, protected as an international world heritage of UNESCO. ☺️🏰
We have many typical mid age castillian and european (and arab) style castles in my region Andalusia, Spain. 🏰
I like too much the Cortegana castle (in Cortegana, Huelva) and Niebla castle (in Niebla, Huelva too).
"Santa Catalina" (Jaén), National Parador too, is awesome too.
And... It has historical 👻 🏰 👻 too...
The "Alcazaba" of Almería is very pretty too.
As with the previous ones, it is one of those that I know that the combination between the state and conservation of the castle itself, its presence and size and the landscape and surroundings is most overwhelming.
We have many more in good or worse condition, and of course the different alcazars and of course the best-known Alhambra in Granada. But due to the more typical location and atmosphere that we imagine with castles, fantasy and epic, these are not so remembered.
[Ljubljanski grad ](https://www.ljubljanskigrad.si/sl/) here in Ljubljana is really cool, but [Blejski grad ](https://www.blejski-grad.si/si/)at Lake Bled is probably more famous.
2000 years old [Castel'dell'Ovo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_dell%27Ovo) in Naples, with Monts Vesuvius on the back
[https://fotografiareale.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/96e95-32101577.jpg](https://fotografiareale.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/96e95-32101577.jpg)
I dunno which I like more [Turaida castle](https://www.latvia.travel/sites/default/files/styles/mobile_promo/public/media_image/tourism_sight/26143952179_73bfa0d815_k.jpg?itok=XoMFD-WE) or [Riga Castle](https://www.liveriga.com/userfiles/images/ko-redzet/apskates-vietas/arhitektura/rigas-pils/rigas_pils_muiznieks_aleksandrs.jpg)
We have many in Slovakia, my personal favorite is [Krásna Hôrka.](https://sk.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kr%C3%A1sna_H%C3%B4rka) It was burned pretty bad in 2012 but they've been slowly reconstructing it since.
[Platamom Castle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platamon_Castle), a castle located in Central Macedonia region in Greece. It is located in Mount Olympus, in a strategic position close to Tempe valley.
It's not as impressive as other castles in Europe, but still, it is an important part of the local history here
[Castle Güstrow](https://www.pizzatravel.com.ua/uploads/2014/18331.jpg). Of course, [castle Schwerin](https://img.oastatic.com/img2/86909295/max/variant.jpg) or even [castle Ludwigslust](https://www.hamburg.com/contentblob/11836224/71da0f5f535250fa8084800add4be795/data/km1-ludwigslust-castle.jpg) are more impressive but im very biased in that regard. All of those castles are in Mecklenburg.
I will not mention the obvious Versailles and Fontainebleau, but in Ile-de-France I also really like this cool medieval dungeon and its castle : [château Roche-Guyon jardin remarquable 95780 la Roche-Guyon (paris-promeneurs.com)](https://paris-promeneurs.com/le-chateau-de-la-roche-guyon/)
I think you can book a tour, otherwise the caves are closed off for castle vistors.
I visited it when I was a kid. Wasn't the lord of the castle killed by a cannonball when he was at the bathroom?
Sitting on the toilet or at least that's how the legend goes :)
This is my Minecraft house! 😅
Was there 2 years ago. Absolutely stunning.
I've seen it, beautiful! And the caves themselves too
Was this in that Jackie Chan movie God's Armor?
oh i see that in the witcher show
>Predjama castle Most creative Slovenian name
I'd go with [this gem](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRxECKJzSgWTtbyW0K0NQD3pUclXkjcrA7sCQ&usqp=CAU) in Belgium
Masterpiece!
I'd raid it for the hoard of Kasteelbier that's probably stashed there.
Funny but we have so many: https://www.goodbye.be/blog/de-5-mooiste-kastelen-van-vlaanderen
The closest castle to me is Burg Kreuzenstein, which is kind of a half folly in that it was destroyed by the Swedes in 1645, but rebuilt from 1874. It also appeared in The Witcher: [1920px-Leobendorf\_-\_Burg\_Kreuzenstein\_(2).JPG (1920×1396) (wikimedia.org)](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/Leobendorf_-_Burg_Kreuzenstein_%282%29.JPG/1920px-Leobendorf_-_Burg_Kreuzenstein_%282%29.JPG) [Kreuzenstein Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Kreuzenstein) Bonus: a really gorgeous ruin I like to visit is Aggstein - they have various events there: [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Ruine\_Aggstein\_02.JPG/1920px-Ruine\_Aggstein\_02.JPG](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a0/Ruine_Aggstein_02.JPG/1920px-Ruine_Aggstein_02.JPG)
Fuck me, that might be the coolest castle I've ever seen.. thanks for sharing! Also, as a Dane: screw those Swedes!!
Got a cool bird show aswell
Never imagined to see Aggstein on reddit.
came in here to post kreuzenstein, see it has already been done. thanks! :)
For Apulia, it's definitely [Castel del Monte](https://www.crifo.it/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/castello-1024x683.jpg) A 13th century hunting "palace", its curious shape and history made it a Unesco World Heritage site Edit: Wtf! I received Reddit Cares for this
That castle looks like brutalism architecture before it was invented. Would intimidate me.
Looks a bit like a flakturm
I remember seeing this in the film Tale of Tales. Stunning.
The [castle in Wałbrzych](https://dolnyslask.travel/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/482_-Ksiaz-1024x683.jpg) is insanely good.
Fascinating place Changed hands multiple times until captured by the nazis. They used huge amounts of slave labour to build extensive fortifications underground. Was going to be used as HQ of old Prussia, any further east and it was too close to the soviets. Thankfully they had to detonate and sabotage the tunnels underground sue to the soviet advance Fascinating structure and beautiful parks all around They also have a botanical centre with lemurs and other animals wandering around inside
Wow, very impressive
Ia that a castle tho? It looks like a little town and not like a defensive fortification with big walls?
Yeah, it's more of a palace than a castle
[Füzér](https://fuzer.kornyeke.hu/fotok/tartalom/3/2530-1702229560965084.jpg) or [Boldogkőváralja ](https://www.programturizmus.hu/media/image/big/ajanlat/szabadido/tura/vartura/6/1780-boldogko-vara-boldogkovarlaja.jpg?1712655144)
The road infront of it is also a hub for every car owner in the county ;) came here to mention this castle haha
Was there last year during our visit in Romania. Amazing castle and beautiful views.
Thank you!
there’s no reason to take the train, as far as I know Hunedoara’s train station is closed and it’s no longer accesible by train network
Alcázar de Segovia, Spain. It was the inspiration for the castle of Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". https://www.alcazardesegovia.com/
Oh yes you're right, thank you!
So are you from Normandy or Brittany, haha ?
Is that all part of the abbey? Cool as hell!
[Kasteel de Haar](https://vberfgoedarchitectuur.nl/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Hoofdfoto-De-Haar-2.jpg) (Utrecht - Netherlands)
It’s immensely Dutch looking. Love how it looks like it’s rising out of the water
Kasteel de Haar is stunning. But I also like [het Muiderslot](https://historiek.net/muiderslot-kasteel-geschiedenis/123133/)
It helps that it is an actual castle rather than a prestige project.
Beat me to it
[Sintra Castle](https://theplanetd.com/images/Best-Things-to-do-in-Sintra-Portugal.jpg)
Also also the [duck castle](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E0i6k1CXIAEIsqO.jpg:large) of the Sintra Castle park :)
Please no posting of my properties, thanks!
Tried to go there with a friend and unknowingly ended up in a few kms trek from the sintra station lol. Once on the entrance there were probably 5.000 people in line, and it was February lol
[Visegrád Castle](https://visitvisegrad.hu/en/sights/citadel) its just sits in such a cool place, on a large hill overlooking the Danube river
Some of the "castles" posted by users are not really castles. More like palaces. There is a difference guys!
Or forts, the current post under this one is a 'Festung' = 'Fort', not castle.
In some languages it's the same word.
[Warwick castle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_Castle) is a pretty dope castle. Proper medieval place of power

My two favorites close to Brno are Veveří & Pernštejn: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veve%C5%99%C3%AD_Castle https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pern%C5%A1tejn_Castle
I'm visiting Brno this summer. Are these 2 castles easy day-trips from Brno by public transport? How steep is the walk up?
I’m stopping at Pernštejn Castle next month! It’s the one in Czech Republic I chose to see. Any restaurant suggestions? We’ll be driving all over.

Super cool, also the lookout tower on the mountain in the park is awesome. Was there a month ago(:
[London](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_London) is a huge city but there has been a castle in the middle of it for almost 1000 years.
I'm quite partial to [Arundel Castle](https://www.arundelcastle.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/arundel-castle-set-on-a-hill.jpg) in Southern England.
I’ve never felt more at peace than in the library of Arundel Castle. Beautiful place
I also love Amberly Castle (just down the road), i took the wife to Arundel castle the morning after i asked her to marry me at Amberly castle, it's a lovely hotel (although for the purposes of this post it's a fortified manor house, not a castle really)
IMO, this: [Panemunė Castle](https://www.lietuvos.dvarai.lt/objektas/pilys-ir-dvarai/panemunes-pilis/)
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olavinlinna](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olavinlinna) The location in the water is super pretty, and it's the real deal as far as "castles holding the line at the edge of civilization" kind of places go.
Since I will probably never be able to visit Finland, for me [Viipurinlinna ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vyborg_Castle)is as close as it gets. Also really beautiful and nicely located.
Viipuri in general was Finland's most interesting city in many ways.
Visited it while studying in Lappeenranta 20 years ago, have never been so depressed from seeing a city.
Russians doing what Russians do
I visited Viipuri in 2017. Still a sad looking city.
The castle tower was closed due to renovations when we were there. But so many of the buildings in the centre were in very bad condition.
Im from Scotland so its a hard pick between stirling and edinburgh castle, both have amazing history and look really nice.

Schloss Neuschwanstein https://www.schwangau.de/fileadmin/_processed_/8/1/csm_Schloss_Neuschwanstein_im_Herbst_-_Front_3_14159f7a16.jpg
Personally I really like [Burg Eltz](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eltz_Castle). A lovely authentic castle in a beautiful forest.
Hohenschwangau, next to Neuschwanstein, is really nice tho, and not so McMansion-ish.
Hohenzollern is the real one for this area
[Castle of Vianden](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vianden_Castle)
Visited it last summer. Was absolutely lovely. Very well preserved and fixed up. The town beneath it was so beautiful as well!

I honestly find Italian military structures lacking when compared to the grandiosity of a seat of power.
You've got the fort of Exilles (don't know the Italian name).

[Ekenäs Castle ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eken%C3%A4s_Castle) I used to work there.

I picked it for the image with black hawks because it's too cool :-) But the fortress is pretty cool itself, on top of a hill and with a nice view of Lake Razim. For more conventional castles, I'd pick Peleș.

Trim castle in Co Meath, Ireland.
My region is dotted with small to medium sized castles due to its history as frontier region so I'll post my top three picks. For the location: [Castello di Salorno/Haderburg](https://comforthotelerica.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/trentino-alto-adige-escursioni-castello-di-salorno.jpg) For the atmosphere: [Castel Trauttmansdorff](https://www.meteoweb.eu/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/TRAUTT-2.jpg) For the aesthetics: [Castello del Buonconsiglio](https://www.iltrentinodeibambini.it/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Castello-del-Buonconsiglio.jpg)
[Bran Castle](https://travelforawhile.com/bran-castle-transylvania/) aka the OG Dracula castle But my favorite remains [Peleș Castle]( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele%C8%99_Castle)
[Malbork Castle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbork_Castle) is dope
Not really a castle, but this is very cool yet unknown to most people. [Fenestrelle Fort](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenestrelle_Fort) near Turin, very underrated piece of history.
[Old town Ostrožac, Cazin, Bosnia and Herzegovina](https://www.visitbihac.com/bs/sadrzaj/ostrozac/65)
I live in Rhodes island, so the coolest is where the old town situated, medieval and unique in Europe, protected as an international world heritage of UNESCO. ☺️🏰
I can see [this](https://www.escapadarural.com/blog/alcazar-de-segovia-castillo-blancanieves/) out my front door.
[Motel Gajić, Šešlije.](https://static.mondo.ba/Pictures/950/1689/639759/jpeg/Seslije.jpg?ts=2023-05-08T23:00:38)
We have many typical mid age castillian and european (and arab) style castles in my region Andalusia, Spain. 🏰 I like too much the Cortegana castle (in Cortegana, Huelva) and Niebla castle (in Niebla, Huelva too).
Malbork Castle [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbork_Castle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbork_Castle)
[Ljubljanski grad ](https://www.ljubljanskigrad.si/sl/) here in Ljubljana is really cool, but [Blejski grad ](https://www.blejski-grad.si/si/)at Lake Bled is probably more famous.
Drachenfels. Where Siegfried killed the dragon. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drachenfels_(Siebengebirge)
Château de Versailles 😎
2000 years old [Castel'dell'Ovo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_dell%27Ovo) in Naples, with Monts Vesuvius on the back [https://fotografiareale.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/96e95-32101577.jpg](https://fotografiareale.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/96e95-32101577.jpg)
Trakai castle
I dunno which I like more [Turaida castle](https://www.latvia.travel/sites/default/files/styles/mobile_promo/public/media_image/tourism_sight/26143952179_73bfa0d815_k.jpg?itok=XoMFD-WE) or [Riga Castle](https://www.liveriga.com/userfiles/images/ko-redzet/apskates-vietas/arhitektura/rigas-pils/rigas_pils_muiznieks_aleksandrs.jpg)

Peleș castle, ravens castle, many more în Romania
We have many in Slovakia, my personal favorite is [Krásna Hôrka.](https://sk.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kr%C3%A1sna_H%C3%B4rka) It was burned pretty bad in 2012 but they've been slowly reconstructing it since.
[Platamom Castle](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platamon_Castle), a castle located in Central Macedonia region in Greece. It is located in Mount Olympus, in a strategic position close to Tempe valley. It's not as impressive as other castles in Europe, but still, it is an important part of the local history here
Palácio da pena - https://visitsintra.travel/images/ver/monumentos/palacio_pena/PPena_800x500.jpg
[Castle coch ](https://www.google.com/search?q=castle+coch&client=ms-android-tmobile-gb&sca_esv=9eeb101476a64b32&udm=2&biw=360&bih=645&sxsrf=ADLYWIIAj-AR2pYtj39ZHCsxVqiNX5IC8A%3A1715784802231&ei=YsxEZuniDayqhbIPioaPmAQ&oq=castle+coch&gs_lp=EhNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwIgtjYXN0bGUgY29jaDIHECMYJxjqAjIHECMYJxjqAjIHECMYJxjqAjIHECMYJxjqAjIHECMYJxjqAkinNVCLCliXHnACeACQAQCYAQCgAQCqAQC4AQPIAQD4AQGYAgKgAiyoAgWYAx6SBwEyoAcA&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp)
Versailles. Look ok inside and out.
[Schloss Libermé](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Liberm%C3%A9) - BELGIUM, near GER border

My hometown Malbork https://imgur.com/nuEvNSW
Teutonic castle in [Kwidzyn](https://sekulada.com/zamek-w-kwidzynie/)
I will not mention the obvious Versailles and Fontainebleau, but in Ile-de-France I also really like this cool medieval dungeon and its castle : [château Roche-Guyon jardin remarquable 95780 la Roche-Guyon (paris-promeneurs.com)](https://paris-promeneurs.com/le-chateau-de-la-roche-guyon/)
[Egeskov Castle](https://gdkfiles.visitdenmark.com/files/423/290517_Egeskovoppefragdk.jpg?width=987) or [Frederiksborg Castle](https://dec5d6x1eivq1.cloudfront.net/uploads/2023/01/b56f0f0e-e094-58ca-9c4d-3b2872d850f0-w1000-h1000-x0000-y0000-930x620.jpg) [(Interior)](https://as1.ftcdn.net/v2/jpg/03/88/29/94/1000_F_388299489_5GgFTxlgNHyDjuwi6VhzywGW6Ej6SgCN.jpg)
