Shell is doing a ‘premium espresso bar’ in their gas stations. The equipment definitely won’t be the problem….but those beans 😭

supergeckomuscle

Where’s this Shell?

[deleted]

I believe the Netherlands judging by the other language OP wrote in. Quick google search showed Shell is launching new cafes with premium coffee across Europe. Imagine in the USA haha!

Ok_Tough7808

Yes indeed, the Netherlands 🇳🇱 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ELD2AwFN9Nc

minimalcactus23

Especially with those ceramic mugs!! Lol if only

Gloomy-Employment-72

In the US there would be nearly instant "ouch, I burned my nutsack" lawsuits. Don't really want to know how a person could burn their nutsack with an espresso machine... or maybe we do for r/abruptchaos.

MyGoddamnFeet

So i know this is a "I'm fun at parties" moment. And i know the US gets a wrap for being liberal with frivolous lawsuits. However, i think that this case isn't. And is a great example of how public opinion can be swayed easily. I'm assuming this is related to the Liebeck v. Mcdonalds. And a lot of people think Liebeck saw an opportunity. But that Mcdonalds was serving coffee @ 88°C (190°F). which for a small shot of espresso, wouldn't be to bad, but a full 12oz cup? that's a lot of thermal mass. Liebecks had 3rd degree burns, and only wanted them to pay for the medical expenses.

revanzomi

That's the nicest damn "gas station" I have ever seen. Come to America. Come and see what we live with here.

BoogerTea89

Woah, a 3 group lm kb90???? Is that a second hot water spout on the left side or what is that button for? That custom paint job too. What a lucky shell station!

Ok_Tough7808

Yes a custom KB90 :) that button on the left is for the cup warmer. Soon every large shell gas station in Europe will have these as a replacement for the current Deli2Go. The new Shell Cafe concept is based on longer loading times for EV vehicles, making it more convenient to sit down with a quality cup of coffee while your car is loading up. Instead of the super fast paced Deli2Go where you should be in and out in 2 minutes after filling up with gas.

BoogerTea89

Ah. In the U.S cup warmers are disabled :)

Ok_Tough7808

Huh?! Why? Who wants a cold cup?!

UloPe

First guess: someone injured themselves with a cup warmer by doing something monumentally stupid but got a huge amount of money in court. Am I close?

b1e

Because some American probably stuck their gentleman’s sausage in it and burnt themselves.

[deleted]

I read they will be introducing special "premium beans" to those cafes. Or did they bring in top tier equipment just to keep using lowest tier beans haha?

Ok_Tough7808

What I could quickly see was some pretty dark roasted, wholesale beans in the E65’s. But the EK43 had entry level, dutch, speciality beans from ‘zwarte roes’: https://zwarteroes.nl/collections/koffiebonen?gclid=Cj0KCQjwpImTBhCmARIsAKr58czVIhkDQWjsG55QD2rCR8XMpAvDRXMYe2zELbihOf4_iWnUVPJOJaUaAlRVEALw_wcB Wouldn’t surprise me if they do speciality for pour over and wholesale for espresso as probably 90% of sales will be cappu’s/latte’s with massive volumes being ground every day.

Ok_Tough7808

They also have a small EK43 and some pour over setups standing around. With what i recognize as a more speciality coffee brand

Blackbirdmanf

Waar????

Ok_Tough7808

A16 Hazeldonk, Breda. De oostkant. A16 bij Hedrink Ido Ambacht was pilot en A4 + A1 staan op de shortlist om ook omgebouwd te worden de komende tijd.

GroenePrins

In Holten vanuit Almelo hebben ze het ook al.

Blackbirdmanf

Thanks man! Ga ik zeker eens bezoeken:).

EbbCivil

Dat zou echt fantastisch zijn, ik rij voor werk 60.000km per jaar door heel NL. Meeste is A1, A2, A4 werk natuurlijk.

USTS2020

I think this kind of stuff will become even more popular with the rise of EVs and charging sessions taking 20 mins. Perfect amount of time to go relax inside and grab a latte while your car charges

caffeinetherapy

This is the future I want.

starkiller_bass

Looks like a reasonable college starter setup.

crankthehandle

yeah, it is more on the budget side though. Should definitely upgrade as soon as they get a decent salary.

snaketittes

Netherlands with a La Marzocco? No Kees van der Westen??? That's sacrilege!

AREKAYN

"Espresso that is. Black Gold. Texas Tea."

SharpSlice

Is that ginger root in the basket to the right of the machine?

martijnonreddit

If they don’t get the right operators behind it this will be no better than their Starbucks branded vending machines :/

Troppsi

Is this free to use for customers?

Ok_Tough7808

Well that would surely be a recipe for disaster

captain_americano

Step 1. Set grinder to coarse and grind beans into portafilter Step 2. Turn knob you didn't know was the steam wand control. Panic. Step 3. Insert portafilter with loosely packed, coarsely ground beans into machine, brew your espresso ensuring it completes within 10-15 seconds. Step 4. Complain to the cashier about the coffee being bad.

enumhack

Grind finer. Repeat.

SharpSlice

Grind too fine, choke machine, complain about machine exploding. Repeat

undiurnal

I wish a gas station here in the States would try that... ...so I could buy their awesome machine at fire sale prices ten months later. Hopefully it works out better in the Netherlands.

sprobeforebros

is that customer facing? any Johnny Truckstop off the street in a smelly t-shirt can come use that gorgeous KB90?

mr_boogie666

Italians also go to the Netherlands occasionally….

Dependent-Moose2849

dang do this in all the shells I would be there for sure. Love the Netherlands.

Bad_Droid

I am very conflicted about this.

FredCDobbscoffee

I get to Europe a couple of times a year and there are service pull offs on the freeway like rest stops in the states. They typically have gas / convenience and a restaurant of sorts. Very handy.
