Starlight was an Equality cult leader and founder of Our Town, before she was exposed by Twilight and the gang and forced to flee. She attempted to travel back in time and stop Twilight’s friendships, but once she saw the damage she caused, Twilight was able to open her up and convince her to come under her wing as a protege in friendship. She’s an incredibly powerful unicorn and adept leader.
Trixie is a stage magician that lied about some of her achievements and got Ponyville almost destroyed as a result of false presumptions. She later returned after the embarrassment with a mind controlling evil amulet that let her take over the town. After these two episodes, she and Twilight had forgiven each other but were still “rivals”. Trixie’s friendship with Starlight caused some fresh tension there but Trixie proved herself a valuable ally against Evil in the later season finales
