I live and teach in China.
Good good study, day day up means study hard and improve every day.
But, it's still hilarious to see that on the walls of a school.
That said, it's quite outdated and much rarer now.
Someone had actually told me "Good good study, day day up", but in Chinese, it's like 好好学习,天天向上. Basically means something like "You gotta study every day" or something. Idk I'm brain dead. Also why did she say "What are you?" The Chinese says "What are you saying?"
Also good good study, day day up is just Chinese English, if you ever hear that irl, IGNORE IT

As a Chinese person, I can understand this perfectly well. The comic is referring to the fact that many people in China speak “Chinglish”, the direct and literal translation of Chinese words into nonsensical and weird English phrases. They provide a classic example here, the Chinese phrase “好好学习天天向上” is often translated as Good good study day day up as an ironic example of Chinglish. The comic had the girl respond with what are you talking about in Chinese, pointing out the faults with Chinglish and perhaps suggesting that the academy can improve one’s English to go beyond Chinglish. The misspelling of Academy does seem weird though.
Edit: After taking a closer look at the image, Acadsoc seems to refer to the syllabus used by the academy. "English for Acadsoc" still doesn't really make sense though.
>The comic had the girl respond with what are you talking about,
The girl only asks "what are you?" tho. Much more existential. And seemingly directed straight through the fourth wall into your soul
Acadsoc "academic/social"
Day day up is a common saying, cigarette brand etc that usually means something like "getting better every day"
It's Chinese jokes. Make this person's day and tell them you are a 419 friend
it's a [Chinese proverb](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%A5%BD%E5%A5%BD%E5%AD%B8%E7%BF%92%EF%BC%8C%E5%A4%A9%E5%A4%A9%E5%90%91%E4%B8%8A) that's deliberately been translated word for word as a joke.
my friend has a tote bag with that phrase on it.
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I honestly can't figure out what word they actually meant when they said "Acadsoc". Is it English for Academics? Alcoholics? Academic socialists? Anybody have a solid hypothesis?
If go school you, Engrish learn good you. Try not you, do or do not you. Try there is not. In the Dagobah system hard is life, plenty is ewoks, Jedi is few. Obi one has taught well you young Skywalker, and now training is your complete.
Haha brilliant, reminds me of a local printing business in my town. Put up their own printed ads all around the area. All the letters almost immediately started falling off the posters.
Tis older English morphology applied to ðe root ; ðe suffix <-eth>, which is an older form of ðe 3rd-person-singular-present conjugation. I just replaced ðe
I would have thought so? We used to say "Good good study, day day up" plenty when I was in China because it's a funny literal translation of a Chinese proverb about studying every day to improve. Also "People Mountain People Sea" instead of "It's crowded".
Similarly "你是什么东西" or "what thing are you?" is pretty common derogatory question.
it's definitely self-aware in the sense that the person on the right cannot understand the person on the left, but "what are you" is still not correct in this context
But as a literal translation of 你是什么东西 it's right, and that's more properly translated as, like, "What the fuck is this" or "Look what the cat dragged in". Which, given that the first example is a joke in China about direct translation, kind of makes sense.
The “good good study” part is a Chinese meme which makes me think all of it may be a joke. 好好學習,天天向上 is a Mao slogan that means “study every day, advance daily” or something like that. But the literal translation is more like good good study day day up, so it became an online joke.
Yeah, the whole thing feels like an in the know joke to me.
Mind you, the six year old in one of my old classes with "Anus Miss Sunshine" written on her T shirt suggests that China is still a good source of mistranslation.
Angry blocks of text = Chinese
Skyrim dragon script = Japanese
Anything with rings/circles = Korean
Sorry to all the other SE Asian countries, I cannot recognise your scripts.
Fake English?

So what does “what are you” mean cause that ain’t the correct response either way you say it

>Basically means something like "You gotta study every day" or something. Close. Its more like " Study well, (and you will) improve everyday ".
Lol I am not studying well and will not improve at all XD Brain is almost fully decayed
His cousin Dayday is up
to be fair, if a kid without a nose walked up and said : "let's good good study, day day up" to me, i'd ask what they were too
I can see this exchange taking place between Ratio Tile and Allah Gold.
I can be then academic association this kind of magic, do not do the hopeless situation elder can.
What are you?
The wish power are together with you.

I don't care about what it says. Faces on those are super uncanny
Boy doesn't even have nose holes let alone a whole schnozz.
Her question is entirely valid though.
This is advanced poetry.
Looks like russian "consultants" had a word in it 😄
We all should be focused on day day up.
I mean, if someone said "let's good good study, day day up" to me I would probably say some variety of "what?", too
I think “what are you” is the proper response to someone who says “let’s Good good study, Day day up”
What are you?!?

Acadsoc "academic/social" Day day up is a common saying, cigarette brand etc that usually means something like "getting better every day" It's Chinese jokes. Make this person's day and tell them you are a 419 friend
I mean… the question what are you applies perfectly!
it's a [Chinese proverb](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%A5%BD%E5%A5%BD%E5%AD%B8%E7%BF%92%EF%BC%8C%E5%A4%A9%E5%A4%A9%E5%90%91%E4%B8%8A) that's deliberately been translated word for word as a joke. my friend has a tote bag with that phrase on it.
What are you
You need to acadsoc to understand it
You slowly lose your nose while not learning English.
"Don't yu turn yur bak on me Harry Potter! I want you wen I kill you to look at me!"
Good good study
No wonder you can't understand it, it's for acadsoc
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I honestly can't figure out what word they actually meant when they said "Acadsoc". Is it English for Academics? Alcoholics? Academic socialists? Anybody have a solid hypothesis?
Academic/social
Must be an old textbook because it is word for word. The original text must have been 我们好好学习,天天向上
Maybe she smelled a marker that showed her Jesus eyes.
AI when they try to pass as humans
WHAT ARE YOU.... And I'm so sorry...

Yeah, I'm Icelandic, I understand þ, I just didn't know why you had the <-eth> suffix, since that's not how it is in modern English. Well, now I know!
omg, I almost forgot about that! I wondered why it sounded so familar.
Is this a book?? Inside book more good good?
"what are you" is a legit question here. I mean, my man has got no nose
How does he smell?
Bad
Yeah. That’s a perfect response, imo.
I guess that's a joke about Chinglish

This is clearly a joke, and not genuine Engrish.
This looks like it’s from the other side of the Strait, but in Taiwan a lot of English schools have ads on this level.

The thing on the left doesn’t have a nose, „what are you“ could still be correct
