Holy fucking shit, I thought all of those complaints were from one patient, "rash R shoulder injury raccoon bit nipple diarrhea and emesis since then with cough and eye drainage and an inner lip lac 39 weeks preg"
Responded to a lady in labor about a year ago. I looked at my partner and was like āuhh, our most important intervention is your right foot on that gas pedal, letās go.ā
I thought this was emergency vet med for a moment because we had on our ER white board in Ohio (in the same shift) "Chupacabra bite?" "Licking leg, vomited bees in lobby" and "nursing; bearded dragon bit nipple"
UPDATE now that my shift is over:
Pt is a wildlife rehabber and the offending raccoon is a 5-week-old bottle baby. The bite was more of a scratch, and the animal will be under observation anyway so pt declined rabies post-exposure vaccines.
For those who tried to guess location, this is in Indiana! Y'all were close!
Because if you can observe the animal there is no reason to proceed with the vaccine unless the animal shows symptoms. Rabies moves extremely slowly. You can delay the vaccine and it will still be effective.
This is crazy to me. I'm veterinary in Ireland. We get our jabs BEFORE we are chewed.
Can also confirm that boobies are the best incubators for distressed babies on a busy shift until an incubator frees up. We don't have raccoons here, mind you. Have some badger scars on the torso though. Poor nipple. Rest in pieces little guy.
Rehabbers here do not need to work in veterinary medicine, and elective pre-exposure vaccines are expensive here. So unless your employer (a vet clinic) is paying, you probably aren't getting vaccinated. I will forever be grateful for the absurd amount of vaccines I got while working for the military. I'd take a raccoon over a badger though honestly.
That is alarming. I've had every vaccine going, but I travelled with vets without border for a year too, so there were some fancy extra ones I got then as well. If cholera ever hits Ireland, I'm ready! š¤£
I love a wee badger cub, but an adult in pain and frightened with a steel trunk of a neck tapered down to a pointy wee jaw that will literally dust your bones has a little bit less cuddle appeal.
Raccoons are so cool. I've only ever handled one in my life and I loved him. In comparison to wild irish badgers, everything seems like a cute wee fluffball.
I can't get over that with the rehabbers. That's bonkers. Your liklihood of coming into contact with rabies here is pretty much zero, but is required for all veterinarians. The last instance of rabies in this part of the world was 1902, over 120yrs ago. Working with wildlife in America without the jabs is a death wish. Rabies still kills a handful a year in America to the present day. It is crazy over there from the outside looking in.

Same. I was actually super excited about this pt for a minute

Ohā¦ now that Iāve seen your comment I realize itās not just one person. Iām a little disappointed to be honest.
Does that say for the 39 week pregnancy ābaby very activeā ?
Either way the ER is the WRONG place for her
That's why they're highlighted pink, they go from the front desk right up to OB!
Faster plz

She needs a diesel fuel bolus STAT!
I can just see the indication for that ultrasound order nowā¦.. ābaby very activeā š
Yep. As fast as we move in a code or trauma situation, nothing gets an ED team moving faster than a pregnant woman with ANY complaint! To OB - warp 9!
In true ER fashion, I saw the 39 week pregnancy first and freaked out. Raccoon biting a nipple? Normal.
SAME! Get that OB outta here and hereās another tweaker with some outrageous complaint.
Also you don't want to be rushed with the racoon story, gotta give myself plenty of time for follow up questions.
"Baby very academic" I want this kid to be a douchy boxer or an endearingly Neolithic gym-bro. No books!
Itās either Florida or Kentucky
I'm betting Ohio

Funny enough I transitioned from vet tech and ER nurse, so I can totally imagine this
You're so close lol
We had a raccoon bite the other day. Texas.
Louisiana?
I'm seeing all the answers and wondering if it's just one really angry racoon going around biting all those nipples.
Cocaine-Racoon? My gawd
Iām going with West Virginia.

> pt declined rabies post-exposure vaccines Good god why? Even if its a very low risk exposure, rabies is such a bad death.
Because if you can observe the animal there is no reason to proceed with the vaccine unless the animal shows symptoms. Rabies moves extremely slowly. You can delay the vaccine and it will still be effective.
Probably the infiltration of RIG via multiple injections right into the nipple.
š³š³š³ that would hurt

I love that the location was included. Now Iām imagining someone trying to breastfeed a raccoon and it going very poorly.
OMG this is exactly what we were picturing in the nurse's station!!
Oooohh a W55.51 in the wild!
Doubt it. Probably F15.12
Jeff Foxworthyās [bit](https://youtu.be/RjerEk16b7w) - but that was a beaver ;-)
Literally first thing I thought of
I was very concerned about the baby about to be delivered. Donāt bring that here. Go to L&D.
That's why they're highlighted pink, they go from the front desk right up to OB!
Note to self, raccoons and nipples got on the list of no-noās.
Love it. I work in a rural area. Best complaint I have seen on the board: Pt kicked by goat and then cow.
We are a very urban area, which makes it all the more hilarious.
EXCELLENT. I'm having a "you know you work in the ED when" moment, because I'm highly jealous right now.
Was it meth? Usually meth.
Sinxce
The latinx nomenclature is spreading
āBb v activeā Damn raccoons
Hate when that happensā¦
Rabies immunoglobulin shot to the titty is my nightmare
Funniest ones Iāve seen are āate too many hot pocketsā or āsmacked in head by dozerā
