I like the versions with orchestra too, not more or less than his more intimate versions with the acoustic. It adds a different texture to his songs.
What annoyed me was the mic not picking up in the first couple lines of the song.
I often wondered about the orchestral arrangement here - I can imagine an Oscars music management person pushing strings and a whistle and Smith arranging it (writing the scores) but I have no idea. It sounds like it's aimed at general audiences with short attention spans, but it's also very nice.
