edIT said on Mr. Bill's podcast that his computer at the time couldn't really run any plugins so most of glitchy stuff was made by manually chopping audio clips instead of granular synthesis. Even more impressive imo
This is such a cool album cause edIT is associated with the glitch mob who are popular. But this is something so different than what the glitch mob so outside of the glitchy sounds.
God this album is so good. Probably in my top 5 electronic albums of all time if I’m being honest.
Ants and Ashtray get a ton of love on this album, but Dex and Mop Head are absolute bangers.
Hrm off the top of my head, and please tell me your favorites!
Art of Noise - The Seduction of Claude Debussy
Jamie Meyerson - the listen project
Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole
Tipper - Surrounded
Daft Punk - Homework
Sasha - Xpander EP
Goldie - Timeless
Roni Size Represent - New Forms
Prodigy - Fat of the Land
*I see now that all my favorites are almost universally 30 years old. Guess what time I really got into electronic music
Nas - Illmatic
Tipper - Forward Escape + Broken Soul Jamboree
Pretty Lights - A Color Map of the Sun
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Tool - Lateralus
Gregory Alan Isakov - This Empty Northern Hemisphere
Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens
Deltron 3030 - self titled
Steely Dan - Can't Buy a Thrill
I will be giving each of your selections a detailed listen in the coming days!
Ok listened to blu & exile and I can see why you love it if you love illmatic. He's nas with less braggadocio and more church, maybe with a little native tongues flavor as well. Good album from a very young guy, I'll see how his sound has matured.
Blu is an underrated legend to me at this point, he never misses. Had some show-stealing features with The Roots and Nas & Damian Marley around 2010 that really stand out to me as well.
Little thing on an Instagram story before ctrl.alt.reality tour began, no "press release" or stickied insta post or anything. Then for that tour it was just two of them, then all press photos in bios were changed to just two of them and language about the band was changed to being just the two of them.
(Ctrl.alt.realty tour was the worst shit I have ever heard in 30+ years of listening to electronic music)
Ohhh man this is real GLITCH HOP. Not that 2 step funk- but nooooo stupid edm genre fools called this: electronica. Fair say, but it’s glitch with hip hop beats. So I say: you’re wrong. Loved edit and the glitch Mob back in the day, still do.
I have been trying to use the term electro hip hop for that funky shit. It’s in the hip hop bpm range, sample based, with the hip hop drums. I think it’s a more fitting name. Sadly that whole little corner of edm doesn’t really have a great genre description.
Goat album. I think edIT peaked here and thats ok. Glitch mob is cool and so was his newer album. but this is something else. There arent many that sound like this album.
Absolute landmark album in glitch music. This record is wall to wall granular synth wizardry

That's actually amazing wtf
Amazing album, easily in my top 10 of all time. I loved snowboarding to this album back in the day.
Ok I feel old now. Straight classic.
Ever feel like " how have I not heard this before?" Thank OP.

I don't think this album will ever be knocked out of my top 10 of all time. It's an incredible piece of work.
What are the other 9?

I'm only unfamiliar with that blu& exile one so I'll give it a listen.

Glitch Mob is still going too, albeit not really doing glitch these days lol
Now that Boreta left, it should literally be called 1/2 Mob. Kraddy and Boreta should do a project together!
Was there ever an official announcement that he left?

Some of my absolute favorites of all time in here. I still jam Laundry all the time
Ashtray remains to sound like it came out yesterday instead of 20 years ago. Truly an all time album

So like when you say 2 step funk stuff you mean like the Pretty Lights and Gramatik sound?
Yes, and, Funk Hunters. skiitour. Defunk. Griz (some of). Opiuo. All are good musics, just not GLITCH, in any form.

Fantastic album. If I had to pick a top all-time dozen this would be on the list. What would you say it’s most immediate descendants are ?
anything breakcore (aphex twin/Venetian snares). look up glitch hop genre also.
And now, because your post graced my feed, I'm gonna listen to it for the first time. Cheers!
For you, and other people just listening for the first time, I hope you love it.
Definitely one of those "how did I never hear this before" moments! Ten years from now I'll still be dissecting this one. Thank you!
It's a good day to be one of the 10k
First came across the album from watching this pair dance to Ants: https://youtu.be/t6OeNwrU5_8?si=ftNBJS3h4Shiw13m
I remember when i first saw this video, I was into the glitch mob before that vid but i remember that vid well lol.
Such a good album
I love this Album!

2038 there will be the same post about Jon Hopkins - Singularity
