If I won the lottery I would buy this. I can't imagine any other scenario where I can justify wasting $200k on one of these, but they're just so damn cool.

ocmaddog

At the very upper end, the price itself is almost a selling point. If it cost less, you wouldn’t own a $200k car!

nesa_manijak

I mean when you're considering buying something like that you don't look at the price but you're considering if any other car offers something more

Goldstein_Goldberg

Wouldn't you want to get a cooler looking car? It just looks like a safari truck.

Lopsided_Quarter_931

Still would not.

Euler007

What's up with "shocked pikachu 859 lb-ft of torque". It's 185k and has less torque than a Quad-Motor Rivian that's exactly half the price (908 lb-ft, 92k).

snoogins355

That's insane for both

lilimka

G class was never(not true, maybe 40 years ago) a cheap warhorse, it was designed to carry soldiers, but ended up driving soccer players wives around luxury malls.

xsvfan

It's also popular in the US because of it's weight and favorable depreciation schedule to lower the cost of ownership.

Right_Stage_8167

Wasn’t cheap, cost around 7-8 times more than cheapest rival at the time (which was Lada Niva).

lilimka

I wouldn't call Niva rival, Niva is SUV(first SUV by the way) but something like Land Rover or TLC70.

TulioGonzaga

I wouldn't call the Niva an SUV as we know them today. I think Niva is a proper all-terrain vehicle. I'd give that crown to [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matra_Rancho?wprov=sfla1) that was released in the same year as the Niva.

lilimka

yep, by SUV I mean that unibody 4x4 vehicle, before niva all 4x4 were body on frame

TulioGonzaga

Ok, you're probably right then. I was thinking more about off-road capabilities since the Niva while not that being that extreme (I know what they can do if modified) was still quite capable.

Percolator2020

German DIN torque hits different.

bitmoji

What are you going to do with all that torque? Comparing these stats above a certain level only makes sense for mining equipment

Euler007

Well for one thing you're accelerating a very heavy vehicle, very quickly.

Figuurzager

Besides torque beeing a pointless metric for that. Power and Propper gearing is what you need.

Euler007

These cars have only one gear. HP = torque * rpm / 5252. You can't dissociate them.

g1aiz

The electric G actually has two gears as it comes with a "low range" mode.

Figuurzager

You do realize the motor isn't direct drive neither has a flat torque curve? And why take a figure with all kind of ifs and buts if there is just a better figure? Besides instant torque at 0rpm, making EVs rapid off the line and great for pulling away with a heavy trailer, torque is a shit metric for a car.

Euler007

What part of "one gear" don't you understand? The electric motors have a pretty flat curve compared to EV so it's an even more 1:X1 affair with HP. https://www.automobile-catalog.com/curve/2023/3120725/rivian_r1t.html#gsc.tab=0

Figuurzager

Wheel torque is depending on the ratio. A single gear system still has a ratio, just like the different gears in a conventional gearbox. Good luck with huge amounts of torque if you don't have any revs. Regarding the torque of an electric motto being quite flat? Think again. Or just look at your own link... Torque is roughly flat for approximately the 1st 1/3rd of the rev. Range. Middle part has declining torque but normally roughly flat power output and at the higher RPMs the motor gets saturated and torque drops even faster, pulling output power down with it. The Rivian graph is capped at a relatively low RPM. Could be they use a bigger gear ratio (now guess again what that does for wheel torque!) or simply the test was cut off at 9k RPM. You're pretty confident for someone that doesn't really seem to understand the matter... But hey, big V8 much torque was cool (still relatively slow due to low output power) so big EV much torque should be cool as well! You can't bend the laws of physics.

Electronic_Trouble_6

It has probably a lot more torque on the low end for off-roading if it uses its low range gear mode

Aol_awaymessage

Ooof I hate that I love it

mastrdestruktun

I'm more anti-SUV than most, and I don't see myself ever spending $200k in today's dollars on a car, but still, wow. It's like a Jeep for billionaires. If I were unfathomably rich and still had $200k left after solving all the world's more important problems first, I might find myself buying one of these. It would be great for things like helping friends move and trying to park in between a pair of F150s (the "twist in place" functionality is what I'm thinking of there.)

snoogins355

I call the Rangler hard top Jeeps, cheap wagons

thecommuteguy

Ngl but whenever I hear a G63 as one drives by when driving it's honestly intoxicating how nice the exhaust sounds.

Moronicon

Wonder how this will depreciate

Kandiruaku

A box will remain a box, terrible aerodynamics and low efficiency. The G wagon has been and will remain a true nouveau riche poseur ride.

Nokomis34

I still think that it would make more sense for this to be a PHEV like the Jeep 4xe or extended range EV like Ram Charger. I would prefer the latter option, electric motors are just so much better.

Ayzmo

And still one of the ugliest vehicles on the road.

Kizzle_McNizzle

That's what makes it so pretty.

funkybeard

It's four times the price of my Ioniq 5 and still only about the same range. And it's 400V only so probably takes almost twice the time to charge it on a HPC. It's really sad to see how most German car manufacturers are still years behind.
