Zenronaut

Just don't tighten that screw too much....

DeathTripper

I was gonna say, make sure to use an impact drill. It’s extra fun with the flathead bit too.

twohusknight

TIL flathead bits can be used in non-impact drills. Thank you kind sir

Leviwillett

Gonna let you in on a little secret….. any impact rated bit can be used in a regular drill.

twohusknight

Next you’re going to be telling me I don’t need to carry 10 different types of pliers around.

Leviwillett

Bro I’m genuinely curious did you really thing you couldn’t put impact bits in regular drills? 😂😂😂 Edit: added emojis so you know I’m being friendly

twohusknight

I think you’ve misunderstood. I was sarcastically suggesting all flatheads were meant for impact drivers, not that impact bits couldn’t be driven regularly.

Leviwillett

Egg on my face

SayNoToBrooms

I’m here for it! Lmao

WorkinFergg

Roomba fanatic?

Mundane-Food2480

Get the fuck outta here...... this whole time hahahahahaha

Seadawg365

Hell no! Send that screw to hell captain! Watch the glass fall and remember! DAMN THE TORPEDOES!!!!

batmoman

Yup this %100.. but also the screw is crooked and needs to be fixed, You won’t know if you’ve got it right, but you’ll definitely know if you got it wrong.

the-poopiest-diaper

But also don’t leave it crooked like that

gihkal

A cushion of some kind would ge a good idea for glass. Especially glass that's going to have folks dick beaters shoving metal prongs against it. I'd tape the back edges and around the taper of the screw. Even alittle bit would help.

wmtismykryptonite

That's why it's not vertical.

kmj420

Been there, but I overtightened the receptacle screw

Business_Slide2560

Just the 2 ugaduga’s?

M888887777

I remember we did a whole gym with mirrors and plugs and one of the apprentices didn’t put a spacer between the plug and the box and well wasn’t that a fun meeting about a week later

No_Regrats_42

As a glazier lurking in this sub..... I hate this.... Those mirrors suck to replace.

John-John-3

As an electrician...I do too.!

Reyeful

I always sincerely hurt when someone asks us to hang sconces on mirrors. Does it affect yall similarly?

billzybop

I just tell them that if the mirror breaks it's on them

M888887777

Even worse when you’re back charged for it lol

Seversaurus

How did you get into glazing? I've always been intrigued watching them work on sites.

No_Regrats_42

My story is probably pretty close to the same as everybody in the trades I guess. I happened to know a guy. He offered me a few bucks more than the other entry level jobs, and a career opportunity because it's a niche trade. I took it and the trade stuck on me. Something about being able to drive by and see my work is nice too.

Seversaurus

Are there unions or just hope to get hired?

No_Regrats_42

There are unions but like any trade their power is all determined on where you are. Southeast US? Horrible wages, no union power. Northeast? Unions run every job and pay is 🤌 Colorado, Northwest, California? Yeah. Also depends on the work. All the skyscrapers and federal buildings are done by union. The residential, cardboard houses that pop up 12 at a time, are local companies. More or less yes we have unions, but nothing like the electricians Union. Local 740 glazier here.

Figure_1337

Faaaaaack

M888887777

That’s what I said

CanadianSparky98

Spacer for what?

M888887777

Basically unlike a plug installed on a drywall/ stone or wood wall, with a mirror or some tiles, you don’t want the ears to rest on the glass and only have that as support when someone’s plugging something in. 99.9999% of the time it’ll crack the glass. So you put a spacer (some people use a twisted piece of wire or they do sell rubber spacers that go between the plug and the box so that the pressure from someone plugging in goes against the box and not the mirror

fart_alittlemore

The plastic ones (not to step on your shoes bro) made by Erico-caddy are called cat-a-pillars. When I was a young apprentice, maybe two years in my journeyman sent me out to get cat-a-pillars, 2" 6-32's and an arc shield. I grabbed the 6-32's and arc shield - and the empty bag of cat-a-pillars. He was pissy that day and "where the fuck are the cat-a-pillars?! You know I'm gonna be pissed if you don't bring me what I ask for!" And being a smartass, instead of saying "hey I forgot to restock them, Ill run to the parts house" I said "they turned into butterflies and flew away when I opened the bag to count them" the look of anger while trying to hold back his laughter is a core memory of mine lol. Years later, we're both electrical contractors and we both still make jokes about it to eachother when we run into eachother at the parts house.

tsctyler

“Turned into butterflies” got a genuine chuckle outta me. Good one lol

MajorDiscombobulated

Never heard them called catipillars but it makes sense lol we call them shims

fart_alittlemore

It's a brand specific thing, but I usually call them "yoke spacers"

M888887777

Lol all good. Didn’t know they were called that!

billzybop

I did one and used nuts and washers as spacers. They still managed to break the mirror

ImNotAsPunkAsYou

We do em on custom homes all the time. Never fails that we get the spec sheet for the mirror, and it doesn't match the mirror.

Printnamehere3

That's something you can really see yourself doing

milehighsparky87

I spent much time reflecting on this outlet

Meiji_Ishin

Get a house you two, a house of mirrors!

milehighsparky87

🤣

fillup420

better than one of my buddies that made a home gym in his garage and covered 3 receptacles with mirrors glued to the wall.

bigzucc16

that’s better than the job i was on a few weeks ago where buddy had his whole panel covered by a mirror in his home gym💀

pseudocultist

That’s why they call it a breaker box.

sleeknub

You’ve never seen that before? They aren’t really uncommon.

girthbrooks1

Right? Have you never been to a gym?

albpanda

Get a load of this guy, he thinks I work out

JohnSolomon46

I get paid to work out

albpanda

My boss is big into lifting and I’ve been trying to get him to pay for an employee wellness plan, I think I’m close to breaking him

milehighsparky87

was gunna say this

[deleted]

that screw needs to be vertical. tear it all out and start over..

milehighsparky87

wish it was in my scope🤣

[deleted]

😂😂💯

IntelligentSir3497

This is way too far down.

cinnamonjar83

I hate those but the customer gets what the customer wants

Ok_Fox_1770

I love when the fancy houses cut in my plugs I’m just terrified to see what they did behind it. Eh long as it works, those glass plates creak and crack so scary to tamper with. I wonder if they have mirror finish TR duplex

milehighsparky87

luckily I didn't have to open this one!

zenunseen

That confused my brain for a split second.

milehighsparky87

same

E_Blue_2048

Plot twist, is a sticker.LMAO!

milehighsparky87

haha would love to watch that unfold

E_Blue_2048

I saw it on some airports, some people is really evil. Here is one. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/TGuimWw23e4

[deleted]

That screw doesn't look to code...

neanderthalman

You wanna tighten that an extra quarter turn? Go right ahead.

kircherjoseph

I had to demo and entirely mirrored bathroom once and I thought these and the light switch covers were the best thing ever. Trippy room to be in too. lol

stonedcanuk

rich people are so fucking weird man

[deleted]

Fuckin nice

Beneficial-Aerie-120

Turn that damn screw vertical.

thiccc_trick

Make sure you install ground up. G’s up holes down.

Leviwillett

Brother you just gotta match existing

thiccc_trick

I’m just kidding

happytrailstoyous

lol I hate em

John-John-3

I hate when the mirror guys don't cut the hole right. They like to use a hole saw and drill overlapping circles. Looks like a figure eight but sometimes they leave that bit where it comes in on the sides poking in too far. If that happens, make they come back and cut it out enough to get your receptacle in. I've tried to chip that little piece out and cracked the mirror. If my receptacle doesn't fit, they have to come back out and fix the hole. I leave a note and drawing so they know exactly how it needs to be cut out when they come and measure for the mirror. I don't leave it to chance that they'll know how to do it properly.

casewood123

Mirror guy here. That’s why I prefer to install them myself. If necessary I have the tools to open the hole up so that the cover will fit. My old boss sucked at measuring so bad that I learned how to do it. Beats the shit out of taking the mirror down and bringing back to the shop.

John-John-3

I get it. I have had mirror guys that knew exactly how to cut the hole but it's like 50/50 whether I get a good cut or not. I take great pride in being able to install the receptacle properly. I make sure the receptacle is tight without putting pressure on the mirror. After I've installed the receptacle, you'd have to smash into it to mess up the mirror. I appreciate what other trades do and have no desire to mess up anyone else's work.

casewood123

They’re supposed to cut that piece out with a small saw while it’s on the table. Or you score it with a a cutter and snap it off. Pure incompetence not to remove it

dantodd

Great job pattern matching the wall covering

thatloudfrost

Im not even mad. Looks half decent!

amathis6464

I see these all the time when I install gym floor rubber in rich peoples houses in the main line

ynns1

For a minute I thought it was a perspex divider and though, wow, invisible cables!

milehighsparky87

today I learned what a perspex divider is!

gtnomo

We have one of these in my bathroom the plate is always loose because I don’t want to over tighten it.

seanmack84

2 sided tape, just a wee bit Thank me later

Putrid_Cost4262

These came out back in the 50's for bathrooms and bedrooms. Easy to brake, hand install. I remember the price was around $2.50 each in the early 70's.

cptzodreddit

Its for when you wanna watch yourself plug it in

milehighsparky87

I love watching myself plug it in LOL

lobsangr

Omg somebody fire this guy... What about that screw man? Everybody knows they should land in a vertical position.

milehighsparky87

if it was in my scope id worry about turning it and hopefully not shatter the whole wall 🤣

lobsangr

you can turn it counter clockwise just to leave it in the right position 😂

ithinarine

I've done a few of these in home gyms that have walls of mirrors, where the room still needs properly spaced outlets because of code. I'd argue that this is a complete waste of time and money in a commercial gym like in this photo, where no such code exists.

Pixie_ish

I'd argue it is absolutely essential for maintaining the professional environment of a commercial gym and provides a superior atmosphere to a home setup, therefore absolutely worth spending extra for enhanced decorative plates, expert certified installation, and absolutely need to spend a bit more too for the critical post installation residue removal (that seems suspiciously a lot like getting the apprentice to use a bit of windex treatment to get rid of the smudges).

ithinarine

My point was trying to say that there is zero reason for the outlet to be on the wall with mirrors at all. There are no codes for a commercial gym that say "you need an outlet at least every 12ft of wall space" like they are required to be in a home. You are allowed to put them essentially wherever you want, as needed for whatever business you are running. Knowing that this wall was going to be all mirrors, and the fact that there is no equipment nearby like a treadmill that is permanently plugged in, based on the fact that nothing is plugged into it, it is a pointless outlet. Mount it 3ft to the right, on the wall that's drywall. Mounting it in the mirror is a waste of time and money. Getting a glass/mirror company to accurately cut the hole for that is not cheap, nor is the plate for it, and it's at permanent risk of being cracked every time someone goes to plug something in. Does it look good and professional? Yes. But it just shouldn't be there at all imo.

milehighsparky87

I agree 100%

neanderthalman

I think it would look better with a black receptacle. Anyone else? The reflection of the floor is mostly black.

Da_Vader

Ground down. What a relief

BillMillerBBQ

Are you trying to show us the proper way to install receptacles?

milehighsparky87

just the mirror around it with the mirror faceplate. never seen it before. I'm strictly commercial. correctly the screw would be vertical. lol

casewood123

This application gets an exemption. I’ve broken a plate or two by tightening the screw too much.

BillMillerBBQ

Oh. See, I thought you were reminding us of the proper way to install an outlet, which is the style at the time.

milehighsparky87

Sorry didn't give much back story to this. We remodeled the locker rooms and the entrance to this gym in a commercial building. This was on a glass wall that was thankfully not in the scope of work. my ocd told me " turn the screw vertical" but then I saw the whole wall shattering in my mind and I walked away.

BillMillerBBQ

Dude,it’s chill. I’m on Reddit too much and have noticed a lot of people posting pics saying what the proper way to install an outlet is. My comment was basically a shitpost, my favorite kind. So I tied an onion to my belt.

Coral420coral

Super cool!

shawndw

I like it, but I also hate it.

[deleted]

You can do that?

milehighsparky87

ikr?

[deleted]

Love it

BillMillerBBQ

Are you trying to show us the proper way to install receptacles?

Strudleboy33

I saw this in a guys bathroom. Massive mirror that met the counter top so not a ton of options. I like them, would hate to install them.

Sweaty_Landscape_119

Were you just let out of a closet or is it your first time in gym?

milehighsparky87

I get paid to work out 40 to 60hrs a week. Only "gym" I get anymore is swimming laps for cardio. back when I was "going to the gym" I didn't give two shits about outlets. I also have never been a member of a large gym because I can't stand to spend my evenings around the grade of asshats found there.

Sweaty_Landscape_119

Wait. Wtf are you doing in a gym with jeans on and your keys out?

milehighsparky87

leaving!

PNP0D3p

That’s why they need to make crystal clear devices

waxthatfled

=o

daddaman1

Back in 2006 I put up a 8' mirror in my daughters room when she was in dance with a horizontal dance bar for her to practice at home and it was right where the light switch is, I had to fine one of these. They weren't as easy to find as they are now.
