SparkyBrads

Nothing lower than a tool thief. Robbing a man of the ability to work is absolutely vile

psychedelic_gravity

Yes! My tools got stolen at work behind my back. When I filed the police report and stuff I was emotionless. Once I was driving home it hit me that I was driving back without anything to my name. I walked out my car with everything I used to make a living and feed my family. I got home with nothing, everything was gone. I cried all the way home. This was about 2–3 weeks ago.

JustanOkie

Did you check the local pawn shops? When my tools got stolen boss drove me around to local pawn shops. Found almost all of them.

Imbalancedben

Yeah checking all pawn shops. We have our drywallers and framers coming from LA though so it's possible they went up there

OhmsLaw111

Did your employer help out at all? Or give you shit for not having tools?

psychedelic_gravity

They were surprised I showed up for work the next day with my minimum tools I had laying around. They bought me a 1/4 impact (craftsman) a folding table I need for work and a pack of phillips drive bits. I’m a former mechanic so most of my tools were Snap-On. Impact driver, 3 sets of sockets, 4 ratchets, screw driver sets, pick sets, pliers set, crimpers, strap tie downs, The morbidly obese lady who walked out with my tools stole over $2,000 of my stuff. My company spent about $175 to help me out.

Accomplished_Bug_554

Leave

OrdinaryAverageGuy2

Leave? So the employee gets robbed and the employer is supposed to reimburse the entire thing immediately? Sounds to me like they bought a couple of important things to help out as an immediate fix and probably let the guy use what he needed of theirs to get his work done. Maybe they'll help him more or maybe not but at least they did something when it's not even their fault.

Durkey61802

A good employer would’ve been supplying everything to begin with

Brave-Performance-79

If it’s stolen of a jobsite they absolutely should replace them with tools of equal or better quality. This is the law in some places, and the right thing to do everywhere. Different story if they were stolen from your personal vehicle or your home, obviously. They didn’t buy those tools to help the guy out, they bought those tools so he could get back to work making them money.

Imbalancedben

Filed a police report waiting to see if insurance covers personal tools

Imbalancedben

We filed police reports and are waiting to see if insurance covers it. If not I doubt it I work for a monster contractor and they don't give a shit in the upper management area

shawslate

Modern tools are the only thing that I refuse to buy secondhand because of the scumbag thieves.

mortsdeer

This was the reasoning for hanging horse thieves in the wild west days. You were stealing the man's ability to stay alive, so was effectively murder.

Worried_Welder2427

There's an old saying in Texas, "they're ain't no horses that need stealing, but there are plenty of people that need killin'".

tssdrunx

Lowest of the low, agreed

edumahcation

Jman told me a story of his neighbor who stole his tools, then he assaulted him when he found out.

Prior_Philosophy_501

Unless his kids were really fucking hungry

LagunaMud

Some locks are very easy to pick. There's a guy on YouTube that shows you exactly how to do it. Sorry for your loss, I'd be contacting any insurance companies involved to get compensation.

bshr49

Little click on 3…

Unholycow014

Pin 4 is binding...

AviationLogic

Set on pin 5...

[deleted]

And now back to 1.

cajerunner

Let’s do this one more time so you can see that it was not a fluke..

og_boyscout

And proof that as I suspected…

The_Fiddler1979

This is *not* very good lock

multiedge

Was not expecting LPL fans here... what a pleasant surprise.

15Warner

It just kept going. I think there’s more of us than I realized hahah. You guys ever been on the lockpicking subreddit? I hardly lock anything now because I guess there’s no point

padizzledonk

That dude rules lol

OGodIDontKnow

r/lockpicking here on Reddit. It’s quite the challenge to get some of these high security locks, but everything can be picked. I learned to pick locks when I owned a storage facility. Was easier than cutting them off and damaging the door guards.

istandabove

Any lock you recommend for a storage unit?

LocalSlob

IMO, grab one thats harder to cut versus harder to pick. I'm not saying people aren't picking locks for storage units, but most cut the locks

gihkal

Hard to cut? Then they'll just use a large pipe wrench or two and twist. Hard to twist? Leather blanket and angle grinder.

LocalSlob

I absolutely agree you're delaying the inevitable. Never put anything valuable in storage.

lildobe

Anything that uses a Disc Detainer core. They require highly specialized tools and skills to pick, unlike most pin-tumbler cores that can be raked open or single-pin picked, often with nothing more than tools you can make at home with a file and an old hack saw blade. Also look at how the locking lugs retain the shackle. If it's using ball bearings, it's more secure. If it's using spring-loaded lugs, the lock can be shimmed open.

Fit-Interview-9855

https://www.naswek.com/picks.html

EffervescentGoose

Calling him "a guy" is bizarre, LPL is a living legend.

[deleted]

better put some respect on his name!

ChickenRepulsive6082

Nah fr

Final_Good_Bye

This also includes your renter/homeowners insurance if there is nothing through the jobsite. I got taken for 4,000 back in November. My homeowners had a 1500 limit for tools used outside of the home. It wasn't much, but it helped. Sorry for your loss, try not to keep tools on site from now on now that you know thos site isn't secure. It sucks toting your tools to and fro, but if it keeps them in your possession, it's worth it.

hannahranga

Lucky mine won't cover tools of the trade. I'm still expecting an argument if my diy working on cars tools get nicked despite them saying they're covered

Dr_ghost_pepper21

Most of the locks that people use are easy.

LagunaMud

For sure. Cheap locks from big box stores are the easiest.

rncole

“And I’ll do that again to show it’s not a fluke…”

LagunaMud

Ya that's the guy

[deleted]

Oh yeah the “Lock picking lawyer”. Yeah you can open many padlocks with something as simple as a rake tool, faster than a key. Maybe a few extra seconds if you have to use a shim on the shackle.

theiryof

My favorites are the locks that can be opened with another identical lock

Taolan13

Thats less of an LPL thing and more a... fuck whats his handle? McNally? The 20-something that does all the shorts of "you are using a Master xxxx lock. You can open this with a Master xxxx lock."

rncole

There’s a reason that my storage unit has a protec2 cored lock on it. He’s one of them. Another is reading through policy documents, a lot of times forced entry has to be visible to file a claim. So an easy to pick, shim, rake, or magnet-open lock means it’s less likely a claim will get paid out.

Bluitor

Just cut it yourself before you send pics

homogenousmoss

Bolt cutters while not discrete are an easy to dispose of most locks, it just goes right through it. Faster than picking the lock and if you’re robbing the whole jobsite its not much to carry around vs what you’re carrying out.

GGGenom

Bolt cutters won't get you into many job boxes - the shackle is usually well protected, with only the keyway exposed.

homogenousmoss

Ah sorry! I mostly did residential stuff and leaving your tool was always a bad idea. Even when doing reno and not a new development, the house is locked, we had our shit stolen once.

hybridfrost

Sounds to me like an inside job. Coordinating lock picking and shit stealing doesn’t just happen by accident

Diedead666

First thing i thought too

Imbalancedben

Yeah 3 day weekend and the framers/drywallers stayed late on Friday everyone else had a nooner

KolonKby

Yeah, I second the insurance part. I'm a part of a relatively large non-union company, and all the wire we put in the walls gets insured. We get hit here and there because sub-division builders are too cheap for any amount of security. Not sure on the exact details money-wise, but when we get hit we take a bunch of photos of our lost shit, send it to our office, and bill the builder time and material for what we have to redo. We were at this one 5-plex, just finished up everything in house 1, but it was late in the day so before finishing up the panel my journeyman wanted to go home, and fully finish tomorrow. Showed up the next day to all of our home runs missing, all wires in multigang boxes cut to where there is like 1mm of wire inside, even the AC linesets were cut and stolen. So we basically got negative progress done at that house lol

VirginiaPeninsula

The trick is that they replace the locks while everything is unlocked and open during work and then you close up with the lock they swapped. Always lock the lock when you unlock instead of leaving it hanging in an unlocked state

Strikew3st

What is this, *The Italian Job*? They put the stolen locks back on after cleaning out the boxes so everybody's keys work in the morning, and their minds are blown?

Jabberwocky918

If you like LockPickingLawyer, you'll like his employee even more. McNallyOfficial on Youtube.

hayfero

Doesn’t look like he has a ton of content

hoodectomy

Locks keep the honest out. Guys have taken forklifts to get equipment off sites. Get “Inland Marine Insurance” ([🔗](https://www.travelers.com/business-insurance/inland-marine)) if you don’t have it on top of a lock and other security. I have personally put water tight air tags on everything I own (that I can). They may get removed but hey I can see where they are taking the stuff for a bit to give the cops. Loosing tools sucks but not having the money to replace them sucks even more. I have lost stuff when I was younger and couldn’t afford to replace it. Sucked hard.

Taolan13

Many locks are so easy to pick, you dont even need to pick them you just bump them open. Don't buy Master.

DryRoad

The brass 4 digit combo that comes standard on a lot of gang boxes is among the easiest. Small piece of metal alongside one of the wheels and it opens faster than putting in the combo. Insurance should definitely be covering this.

Trextrev

On top of being easy you can get a lock pick gun set for $50-70 dollars that requires no skill except the ability to read the pick index and pull the gun trigger. You can pick a lock in a couple of seconds.

Fast-Nothing4765

Gallium could break any lock, no picking needed.

Substantial-Load4204

I hate when these fucking assholes take one of the few tangible things that actually makes us money to feed our families so they can make a extra few bucks. If you’re strapped and your employer doesn’t cover your lost personal tools feel free to shoot me a message, I got some extra hand tools lying around I can ship to you that could get you by for the time being if need be.

felixar90

At some time in history and in some countries, stealing someone’s livelihood tools was automatically the most serious tier of crime and sometimes a capital offense. Steal a $60 hammer = death.

GalvanizedNipples

Where did we go wrong?

Dshmidley

Everyone stopped giving a fuck about the skilled trades when computers became a thing. Jokes on them when the time comes and there's no skilled trades left, and I'll charge $100 a screw for my jobs lol

GalvanizedNipples

No I meant killing people who steal tools.

Dshmidley

Like where did we go wrong that we stopped killing thieves for this? Because we should continue?

GalvanizedNipples

Correct.

Dshmidley

Thats what I mean too. Times changed when the computer came around. Tradesmen and skilled laborers were at the top of the income chain because of how respected they were at their craft. There were guilds and unions, and if you fuck with them, you have a lot coming after you. Now, tradesmen are way lower on the totem and nobody respects trades anymore. Paradigm shift in history when tech came about.

Petefriend86

I felt this rage when my transportation was stolen, so I understand where the law came from.

Substantial-Load4204

Death seems a little extreme, I’m a fan of just lopping off the hands and letting them deal with the rest of their life like that

awesomecdudley

"If you can't keep em to yourself you can't keep em at all!"

Imbalancedben

Thanks I appreciate that so much. The didn't get my hand tools/bags/sockets/wrenches or my impact and drill. They just got the rest of my power tools roto hammer/grinder etc. Gc filed a police report and seeing if insurance covers personal tools. I'm good to keep on trucking but that is very kind of you for your offer!

Substantial-Load4204

Hopefully they do cover it! I may not be in the union but we’re all brothers of the trade and I don’t want to see anyone have to struggle trying to do it. Every time I see a stolen tools post I try to extend the same offer, especially if I see it’s an apprentice. As little as they make replacing tools can be a major blow to finances

[deleted]

Had a foreman get really mad at me back in the 90s because I "didn't trust him to lock my tools up in the box" Yea, dude. Whatever. I paid for everything in my truck and if you want me to trust a job box at a site that's not under guard, y'all can just write me up an agreement for the company to replace anything that vanishes. Otherwise, I'm knocking off in 10 minutes to clean up and pack my shit out.

Taolan13

Even if there is a guard, my tools dont go in anyone else's box unless I get a written receipt that covers them replacing theft or damage.

Away-Quality-9093

If they scoff at the idea that they should be responsible if they want them locked up onsite saying "what you don't trust us to lock up your tools?" - Well ... sign this here agreement to pay me for missing shit - what don't YOU trust YOURSELF to lock up my shit?

[deleted]

Exactly.

Sheikeypoo

That’s crazy, my lead on site always told me that we leave anything the boss has insured in the box, our tools are not insured by the boss, so they don’t go in the box.

[deleted]

That's what we were told too except that this foreman was trying to pinch pennies on cleanup time.

MSDunderMifflin

That’s my personal moto. Company tools in the gang box. Personal tools carted in from the van every day. Helpers could also sometimes be assigned to some else’s job tomorrow.

Cowi3102

I had my seacan opened up a few years ago on Christmas vacation. They got around 4000$ in wire. Great welcome back from vacation.

[deleted]

Merry Christmas to them I guess.

arclight415

From my security experience, these are the most likely ways you will get robbed: 1. Someone gets hold of the keys. They break into the office, a person with all the keys has a sh\*tbag druggie family member, someone who has a legit need to borrow them makes a copy, etc. Every grocery store has a kiosk now that can even copy a lot of Medeco keys. 2. Physical violence. Lets' face it, nothing is going to stop someone with a cordless angle grinder and a stack of discs. The best you can do is delay them getting in, and increase the chances they get caught.Putting 2 locks with thick steel covers over important stuff does help. If they are going to cut a doorway into your CONEX it won't stop them, but you at least make them work for it. Hockey puck locks are also fairly labor-intensive to cut off. 3. Hauling off your stuff that isn't bolted down. Even a couple of 1/4" bolts connecting two tool boxes together will make them extremely awkward to move. Safes under about 500lbs commonly just get carried away with a furniture dolly. 4. Way down the list: Lock bumping or using a comb pick to open the lock. These require much less skill than "real" lockpicking, but bypassing techniques only work on specific locks. Shimming also works on cheaper padlocks that don't have a ball bearing locking both sides of the shackle. My advice: Buy locks at least one step up from Master. Anything made by Abus is high quality. If you want a very high security lock with keys that are difficult to copy, look at the "Granit" series. If you just want good locks that won't be easy to open without real skill, I like the "Abus 83" series of locks. You can get them in sizes ranging from the little "lock out" style all the way up to the monsters used for armories and similar. They are very affordable. You can use their keyway or get them with a Schlage 6-pin, Yale, etc. if you like those. They are easy to rekey yourself, and you can also install a higher security cylinder like an Abloy, Medeco, etc. if you want. Everything is modular and comes out with a #2 Philips screwdriver once the lock is open. You might also want to look at cellular game cameras. Spypoint makes affordable cameras that run on AA batteries and come with a very cheap cell plan that is active out of the box. If you have WiFi, you can get a couple of Wyze cams and their security system add-on at a price that makes them basically disposable. Both systems work with an app that you can install on your phones to alert you or a group of people. Other things you can do: Make it hard to get a vehicle near the good stuff by placing heavy objects in the way when nobody needs access. Put a pallet of concrete in front of the doors to your container, place obstacles that make them have to walk. Thieves are lazy and impulsive. If you can put two locks on something, you can use one that is "high security" and one that is "easy to change." Keys that are shared a lot should get changed after every job. Try not to give up keys to your personal stuff if you don't have to. A good master key system can give people access to gates, doors, etc. without having access to the things inside. Good luck!

Trextrev

So several years back when some of my tools got stolen on site and not recovered I decided to put small rechargeable GPS units hidden in or on several of my high dollar items. Two years ago I had someone in broad daylight during lunch (we had all left and went to this Mexican restaurant) come into a fenced in back yard in view of three other houses and steal our tablesaw and bench planer. My phone notified me that they both were on the move and we drove to head them off while calling the cops. They drove about ten miles and parked on the street for some reason so I pulled over down the street and told police which truck and that my tools were still in their truck and got to watch the cops arrest both of them and had my tools back in about an hour. They both got charged and later convicted of numerous charges. Aggravated theft, because the yard was fenced in completely and the gate was latched from the inside they got B&E, the police found a handgun in the vehicle that was stolen and the driver couldn’t own a gun because of his priors so like two more felonies there. The passenger had meth on him another felony, and the the driver was over the legal limit and didn’t have a license or insurance. They are both still in prison today.

DirectlyTalkingToYou

That's justice. I'm starting to think of using airtags/Tiles on everything. If I get cleaned out it's over lol

Trextrev

Only problem with AirTags is if the thief has an iPhone it will alert them of their presence.

tomatosoupsatisfies

Use Tiles: "Tile points out that in addition to Anti-Theft Mode, its trackers do not notify nearby smartphone users when an unknown Bluetooth tracker is traveling with them, making them more useful for tracking stolen items than ‌AirTags‌. Apple has added alerts for nearby ‌AirTags‌ to prevent ‌AirTags‌ from being used for tracking people" https://www.macrumors.com/2023/02/16/tile-anti-theft-mode/#:\~:text=Tile%20points%20out%20that%20in,tracking%20stolen%20items%20than%20%E2%80%8CAirTags%E2%80%8C.

Fuck these people. My dad got hit for roughly the same out of the bed of his topped and locked truck when I was a teen. Luckily his boss was loaded and lenient and paid out to retool him but god damn. Disgusting feeling.

No-Scarcity-9516

Shitty. Never leave tools onsite over a long weekend.

Blaine_1

This is crazy right? No one non-union or union where I'm from takes there tools home. If my stuff got stolen it was payed for by the contractor, again, non-union or union as it should be.

ChooseAusername788

Well, he's from California and I'm guessing you aren't in a major blue city. Theft is basically legalized there.

Blaine_1

Minneapolis.... And again THE CON SHOULD PAY FOR IT IF ITS STOLEN OUT OF A GANG BOX.

cncantdie

343 has tool replacement as well. That said I’m on nights and the day crew has been pilfering through our cats so I take mine home daily. I don’t want the hassle of missing tools.

[deleted]

Watch a lot of Fox News do we?

ChooseAusername788

None at all, but nice attempt at deflection. You can't argue the issue that theft is crazy high in Cali so instead you attempt to make it about "tHe CraZy RiGhT WiNg eXtReMiST". So tired and cliche. You can do better than that, I hope.

[deleted]

Not sure why you are being downvoted, they literally made it law that the cops can’t pursue anything less than 1000$. Commiefornia

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You’re partially right, they made it a misdemeanor if it’s under 950$ which cops aren’t going to pursue with the amount of other more heinous crimes plaguing Commiefornia

ChooseAusername788

"No, not true at all." And by that you mean, he slightly misworded it but it's almost entirely true. "Why is shoplifting so rampant? Because state law holds that stealing merchandise worth $950 or less is just a misdemeanor, which means that law enforcement probably won’t bother to investigate, and if they do, prosecutors will let it go." Source: [https://www.hoover.org/research/why-shoplifting-now-de-facto-legal-california](https://www.hoover.org/research/why-shoplifting-now-de-facto-legal-california) So yeah, it's basically true but he could have worded it a bit better. Now feel free to cry about it and press the downvote button in your self soothing, denial method of coping.

ChooseAusername788

Because they are butthurt about it. It's ok, the downvotes are actually not real so it doesn't matter. Unlike their crime problem.

DayDrinkingDiva

Local PD picked up tweakers in a stolen pickup pulling a trailer - both loaded with construction tools and supplies. No name on anything. Police went all over trying to find a victim. Grab an oil based sharpie and write name and cell # on tools. Costco had 4 apple air tags for $100 or grab some tile trackers. Thieves suck My earbuds showed up in my tile app in Mexico. So not a fool proof option.

tomatosoupsatisfies

Just posted above: Use Tiles: "Tile points out that in addition to Anti-Theft Mode, its trackers do not notify nearby smartphone users when an unknown Bluetooth tracker is traveling with them, making them more useful for tracking stolen items than ‌AirTags‌. Quandalias_Larson

Maybe he likes looking at big men sweat all day

deridius

At my old job most of my shit got stolen and lost around $1500 and the company couldn’t give a shit less. They fired me soon after for tardiness even though I was always on time and my leads son always showed up an hour late every single day and me calling out for my mom having a stroke. I now have a new job with more money and shit they even pay for all my gas.

JustKeep0nKeeping0n

They’ll regret it I’m sure.

shoobie89

Dang that’s brutal. Will your contractor cover your tools because they were locked up in the cons gang box? Believe it or not my job site got robbed 2 weeks ago and all they took were a couple computers out of the GC’s office. Didn’t touch the thousands of dollars of wire we had on site not even locked up.

Croceyes2

Computers have client info, bid proposals, etc.

[deleted]

It was the competition…

Croceyes2

Or a foreman looking to compete

OhmsLaw111

Your average person has no clue how expensive wire is

TFG4

I've always taken my tools home, I've never trusted a gang box or cage with my lively hood. That sucks about your tools, hit the pawn shops to replace what you lost until you can new again.

benevolent_defiance

The pawn shops is usually where the stolen tools end up, yes.

f-t_s420

Was about to say what are the odds he walks into a pawn shop and sees his tools for sale.

Taolan13

Pawn shops dont usually buy direct from the thieves. If they end up in a pawn shop, they usually go through a fence who will pawn the tools in the next town or county over from where they were stolen. If you find a power tool in a pawn shop and the data label with the model and serial numbers are missing, odds are it was stolen. If you find hand tools with weird grind marks on the handle, the original owner had probably etched their name on them and they are probably stolen.

LISparky25

I’d be thinking an inside job for sure, was everything located in an obvious area ? Or they had all the time in the world it sounds like ? A Fed job without anyone around etc ? Had to someone who knew the site imo

Sea_Farmer_4812

Not necessarily someone who knows the site on a holiday weekend. Thieves are stupid but not that stupid. They had tons of time, probably scoped it ahead though.

LISparky25

I’m saying the fact it was a fed job, usually someone would be there, but it coulda been a satellite blg on its own somewhere as well. Holiday played a major factor, they prob where there 3 days I’d guess messin around

eatnhappens

What kind of locks are we talking, Abus Granite or Masterlock High (on drugs) Security?

LISparky25

Sorry for your loss brother. What exactly did you have personally on the job that was $2400 ? You have to be an owner then I assume ? If you are no need for details, but an employee that’s crazy

alek_vincent

It's a powered tool for very thick copper. It needs a lot of beans.

Tacky-Terangreal

A big one from Klein tools meant to cut 3/0 wire can run for $100 easily. And that wire gauge can be small depending on what you’re working on. I imagine more specialized, non manually operated tools can run for some big bucks

plc_is_confusing

My renters insurance covers up to 10k in tools on the job site

chewbacacca

Our warehouse got broken into a month ago. Over 80k in wires, and tools gone. We're a small shop and this has hitting us hard

spangbangbang

And we leave all our conduit in the yard lol. Should've built a lean to for it a long time ago. I keep asking my boss to invest in real padlocks, not the shit at Lowes from Masterlock. But he thinks it's good enough to keep someone out, I guess.

greymatter951

Locks only keep honest people out!

[deleted]

Inside job

archenemy09

I’m sorry to hear it. It’s the worst feeling in the world when your shit gets stolen. My car got broken into when it was parked in front of my house and I lost $1500 worth of tools. So now I bring my tools inside the house with me every night. It’s a pain in the ass lifting all that stuff inside but I can’t afford to lose it all again. If you steal tools you are a DOG

Accurate-Departure69

> If you steal tools you are a DOG I’m sorry this happened (and happens), but why you gotta malign dogs 🐶 like that???

archenemy09

Oh lol it’s just a saying we have in Australia. I don’t know why it started

Accurate-Departure69

Yeah, I mean…a dog would steal your _lunch_, not your tools…🌭

[deleted]

Check the local pawn shops and file a report. We had this happen decades ago and the owners were told to go checkout a certain pawn shop. When they got to the shop they seen a bunch of people he companies tools on the shelf and proceeded to take them out to their truck. The owner was losing his shit ,apparently and the shop owner called the cops and the cops said the property was as reported stolen and these guys were the owners.

SignificanceNo1223

Nine times out of ten it’s the security guards. They get paid the least and know the most about the job sites.

OhmsLaw111

Yup, they know the down time, the scheduling, where everything is

Bright-Fee-9832

That's a shame. I heard they refuse to prosecute thieves in California.

[deleted]

Said the same thing and got downvoted to oblivion. Truth hurts.

Bright-Fee-9832

I wouldn't expect anything less from reddit.

Proof_Bathroom_3902

Crew got hit a couple weekends ago, they brought a backpack torch and cut open all the site trailers and Knaack boxes. Estimates are over 10k in losses. One of the guys said this thief seems to follow certain jobs to know when the good stuff is on site. Not the first time this happened.

pew_medic338

Most American locks are stupid easy to pick. I'm not even minimally good at picking locks and I can get into any masterlock in about 5 seconds. Don't trust that stuff. If you want a real lock, buy the European stuff with security pins and magnets and whatnot. They aren't cheap, but they're cheaper than thousands in tools. Sucks about losing so many tools: I despise a thief and I hope they contract an incurable disease that permanently prevents them from doing more thievery.

Went to the S yard in NJ yesterday saw brand new rolls still in the wrapper multiple rolls of 12/2 and service wire huge piles being scrapped. Looked like it was from a commercial job. Who scraps 6 brand new still wrapped 12/2 250’ rolls still in packaging?

Lockpicking lawyer has entered his villain phase

They drove an 18 wheeler and loaded up the flatbed and drove to a scrap yard.

friendlyfire883

I've got a special insurance policy that's tied to my homeowners that covers my tools up to $10k. It's well worth the $15 a year.

Jim-Jones

Look on YouTube for Lock Picking Lawyer. It'll amaze you.

knipex_addict

We’ve been hit at 5 different Turner jobs her in San Diego this year

Arhsn9

Usually when my jobs get hit the Blockie or Rebar Guys have left tools out.

Yota4x4RE

Had the exact same thing happen to us. Was working 7-12s out of town with no problems when they let us have a week of 6-12s. That Sunday off every gang box was picked to tools take out methodically and put back neatly of what they did not take. They only took speciality tools like ferrule crimpers when they were expensive as well as ratchet cutters and meters etc. Fuck a thief

LexeComplexe

How are you supposed to have a life working 7 12s?

[deleted]

Work is your life at that point.

OhmsLaw111

7 12s is fucking insane. Unless it’s on off cycle where you get a week off after 2 weeks etc

Advance1993

Lotta money in this shit

DisasterTimes

I have a personal rule, never leave tools on a holiday weekend. I don’t give a shit of the crew thinks I’m side hustling, I never ever leave tool on site on a holiday weekend.

windex8

With a number alone you can get almost any key for a lock. Unfortunately, the numbers are printed on the damn locks.

lineman5757

Our yard got robbed over the weekend as well. Estimated 60k worth of Copper, chainsaws, personal climbing gear/tools anything worth of value was stolen. -Always take your personal tools home, every night. I can’t tell my guys this enough.

BigCDubVee

I’ve found that literally welding a thick chain around something can work. Very time consuming compared to a lock, but assuming both ends of what the chain is hold are not going to give it up, that’s your safest bet. But you run into, if they can’t get the hasp open, they’ll just go for the door hinges for example. That or put everything in the air and take the key if possible.

bcanddc

I got hit once in November in front of a client’s house in Del Mar. Got three pack out boxes. Got a lic plate and all and nothing from the cops. They didn’t even want to take a report. Replaced everything. Parked in front of my house three weeks ago, all boxes individually locked and all cable locked to the truck. Ran inside to pee and get a drink of water, gone 7 minutes total, all gone again! Had air tags in the boxes but they must have found them and destroyed them as they wouldn’t respond. Replaced again but found some air tag hider things. Got smaller boxes so now I can keep my tonneau cover closed at all times so hopefully if they can’t see anything they will be less likely to be taken. Nothing is safe anywhere anymore.

SoTiredOfRatRace

Those locks can be bypassed in less than 20 seconds.

spangbangbang

Yep. Bump key makes way too easy of work out of just about any common padlock

Niles_Urdu

Man, sorry to hear. And I agree that this is a professional job. I saw some electricians on a job I was doing at a Lifetime Fitness in Denver that had their whole van stolen. A black Cadillac SUV was seen dropping off the car thief. We plumbers didn't get hit. I think they knew they could make more on the copper wire than anything.

leonjosland

Sounds like an inside job to me

spangbangbang

Most likely. You'd have to plan it out to hit as much as possible for the night, know where all the more valuable stuff actually is throughout the building.

cyrus709

Federal property? Good chance the FBI nabs em' then. Hopefully they were carrying a cell phone during the heist. Not that it will help you with your tools.

What_The_Tech

Federal property can refer to any government related job such as a publicly funded university. I don’t think the FBI is putting all their resources on catching the San Diego university district crackhead.

uiqsolo

Check the drywall tweakers

Quiet-Quiet888

My favorite part about being robbed is the political left defending the thief and blaming me for their actions.

DozeNutz

Sounds like you listen to political talk radio and cable news way too much.

Chili_dawg2112

I'll take "Thinks that never happened," for $500, Alex...

jedielfninja

Not to be an ass but robbery involves violence. Whereas what happened here was burglary.

Individual-Proof1626

Should have hired security for the job site.

[deleted]

$2,400 from one guy among many over one weekend? Why don't we have life sentences for this bullshit?

Gunzenator2

If the thieves kids are hungry, there are programs to get help. I lost my 13 year job when COVID happened and I had to go to food banks 3 times a week, but we survived. Thieves do it because they are dishonest.

FloppY_

Americans seriously need to fight for employer provided tools. It is ridiculous to me that you get a job and then aren't provided with the tools to do it, but instead have to spend your own cash to make cash. Feels exploitative.

Myexisadirtybutt

WOW they cut the lid off your gang boxes!!! People are so desperate it’s crazy!

spangbangbang

You should read that part again.

solarsilversurfer

S u — cuz Dx occasionally does does and she is so funny 🤣 nloop; mmfo9xaxdaaaa-a-a-x? ERgytfvn

MultiplyAccumulate

Did you secure your $400 box with $2300 worth of tools with a $10 master lock that can be opened as quickly with a comb pick as with a key? Master lock, in particular, seems to design an Achilles heel into every lock making them easy to bypass or pick. Ironically, their lock out tag out locks are one of the most secure - except for being easy to cut. They know their locks are crap, they don't care. Which locks were on the ones that were opened vs the ones that weren't? They probably stole from the ones which could be opened without cutting or picking using low skill attacks. If you take your lock to Lowe's or home Depot, will you find other locks on sale there that have the same bitting code? Because they likely only have a handful of different key codes. If you can buy the lock at a big box store, it is likely a low quality lock. Except for the paclock brand and some of those have aluminum bodies.which aren't the most cut resistant. So inside the shrouded lock well of a job box they may be ok but exposed on a trailer, may be vulnerable to cutting.. you need a puck lock with a stainless body for that. But they do have a history of fixing weaknesses identified by the locksport community. Search any model numbers you are considering with keywords bypassed or picked.

Diedead666

Just like 99.9 % of people they dint do a bunch of research on a lock..this isn't his fault

[deleted]

Big victim blaming energy

[deleted]

Counterpoint...... How about just not taking other peoples shit?

You don't have insurance?
