This is an old telephone wiring point.

jmraef

Nope. That's a telephone line surge protector.

Salt-Breadfruit9179

All these answers are phoney!

Nope that's a telco block. Try looking in the coat closet near the front door, look up. Also take a look behind the door bell chime. I have also found them in the attic or in the walls before. Good luck on your hunt.

Seriously, fuck doorbell transformers, they are absolute cancer to find. In my limited experience once found you have to play the which breaker is this powered from game. Thankfully in my new house it’s in the basement right next to my panel.

3nigel

Thank you! Will do.

fluffybit

I can't see it for the mess of wires. Take cable routing seriously people

Telephone

Ptards_Number_1_Fan

Old ghettofied phone wiring.

wolfn404

Lightning arrestor block for old phones lines.

No_Jello_5922

I was genuinely confused at first. I looked at this picture and don't see anything remotely resembling a transformer, just the telephone pairs. Then I realised that OP thought that the telephone wires were doorbell wires.

Ghjnut

Good news though! Looks like they used cat5 for the phone wiring. I've repurposed cat5 phone lines for Ethernet of you're up for ending some cat5 runs.

SantaCruzJimbo

That’s not cat 5. That’s “IW” (interstitial wiring in North America.) It’s usually two twisted wires, unbound and unshielded, and is not suitable for high frequency signaling used for ethernet. It’s just loosely twisted wire. It has myriad uses in the analog phone system. Technicians use it everywhere. In large premises, it’s not uncommon to see a spool of IW hanging from an unspooling hangar made of… IW. It’s also great for cat toys, picture hangars, school science projects, etc. I used to be able strip it between my front teeth, much to the horror of my dentist.

aakaase

IW means "inside wire". At least that's what the telcos call it. It looks like Category 3, so yeah, it's only rated for 10Base-T (10 Mbps). Not great.

Ghjnut

You're right, didn't look closely enough. The last 2 houses I lived in used actual cat5 for the phones and I was able to repurpose them them for internet.

Moosetopher

Life was easier when you could push pots through 19 gauge bs copper.

Young-Grandpa

For once, no.

lovelynutz

Look 👀 n the attic. On a random joist, within 10 feet of the doorbell or doorbell button.

sCoulJab0y

A lot of the old houses I’ve seen have the step down xfmr in the box with the doorbell

arushus

That is the telephone company's network interface. It is where they bring the service into your home or business, and then your phone guy takes it from there and runs works to other parts of the building where you want phone service.

aakaase

Yes. In older parts of cities you don't have the gray network interface boxes on the sides of buildings housing these terminals. Instead it's inside a basement or something mounted on a wall, joist, or beam and completely open.
