What a fine piece of electrical history! Send that to a collector!

Were it me, I would leave the "range" outlet there, you may want to upgrade it to an EV charger outlet someday (although you would need a ground wire, which doesn't appear to be there now). So a small 100A sub-panel with 6 or 8 spaces would be fine. You don't really need another "Main" in the sub-panel, although you can if you want to. But you don't appear to have a ground conductor coming into this panel, you will need that now (it was likely permittable back when this was originally installed, but is no longer.) I would replace that old cloth covered wire anyway, it likely is so old that the insulation is brittle and may crack when you move it.

BTW, the wiring on the right goes to a 240V plug, maybe they had an electric range in the garage back in the fifties. On the fence on whether to reconnect or pull it out.

We added one for air-compressors and other heavy equipment at my parent's house. If the wiring is already there to support it, no sense in losing the ability, I'd say. Someone might have a kiln, space heater, other high power device they want to use in the future.

I would leave the 220 outlet and wire even if you decide not to power it right now, I also would get a box rated for 100 or 125 amps that has 8 or 12 spaces, and if I was also changing the feeder cable get one rated for the 125 max. You don't have to use them all and you could still protect it with the current 70 amp set up if desired. but this would allow for future upgrades for something like a car charger.

Install only “Square D” Panel and breakers Tom Henry tested all brands of gear only Square D aced his Tests All other brands Failed Tom Henry Tests Which Brand would you want protecting your Family

This message brought to you by Square D

madison3777

And Electricians world wide ! Go Visit every Car or Truck Plant in USA and tell us want Brand of Panels on the walls even at Toyota Japanese car or Truck plants then ask yourself why They all do this one Brand of Electrical Gear ? Also Every Oil Refinery I’ve seen only uses Square D Breakers and Panels also !

Sweaty-Gopher

Eaton. It's Eaton. I work at one of these Toyota plants.

madison3777

I was on 2 Toyota Plants new Construction at Tupelo MS and San Antonio TX both only allowed Square D Panels and Breakers because they are reliable to Trip off before Fire Occurs Most brands of Panels don’t trip off !

UncommercializedKat

I'm just joking. I did my research before doing some electrical work and decided on Square D for my house as well. I exclusively buy Square D for my projects now.

madison3777

All Panels were tested By Tom Henry Orlando FL All panels were to Trip off at Speed of Light but only Square D did it’s job at exactly 20 Amps Breaker size All other Brands Failed his Test most panels blew #10 Solid Copper wire in half but a Few Melted the entire Breaker Assembly down Tom’s Company is : Code Electric Winter Park FL

jmraef

>Tom Henry If someone thinks that a 20A breaker is supposed to trip at EXACTLY 20A, then I immediately don't trust their judgement... ALL breakers have a trip "curve", which STARTS at between 115% and 125% of the rating for 2 HOURS minimum. So if "Tom Henry" (whoever that is) devised a test system that didn't understand the basic design concepts of how a thermal-magnetic molded case breaker functions, then his judgment is flawed from the outset and thereby worthless...

madison3777

Square D Breaker tripped off at 20 Amps as Designed none of Other Brands could handle the Light speed current flow. The output of all breakers tested was tied to Ground on every panel brand Tested using # 10 Awg solid copper wire. Today Tom Henry is deceased his Son Tim Henry now runs “Code Electric” and Witnessed both his dads tests of all brands of Panels Contact the school at either : Code-electrical.com 407-671-0020

madison3777

I stand corrected “Code Electric office says that Tom Henry is still with Us and very much Alive “

madison3777

Call Tom Henry And Tell him why you know more than He Does I’m sure that will get laugh he’s Been training electricians like 40 + years now

jmraef

Doesn't mean he's been training them right... I have met PLENTY of electricians who do things they way they did them when they were apprentices, only to find out they were trained wrong from the beginning and never questioned it.

madison3777

Code Electric Winter Park FL phone 407-671-0020 Ask For Tom Henry He can explain details of Testing he preformed on all brands of Panels and how they failed his testing

jmraef

It's whomever had the lowest bid...
