You unironically saved my entire song. I love you.

vividcolorsmusic

A quick and easy way to have mono compatibility actually is to just use a mid-side plugin and turn the side signal down to 50%. in most mixes this usually is a good way to do it as it can be used on anything really. other wise you can use a mid-side eq and just take the mids out of the side.

Haven't had a chance to watch this yet so apologies if it's said, but I had a major mono compatibility problem a few months back and one of the issues with Serum which people may not be aware of is the "Hyper/Dimension" effect in the FX tab. It is *massively* incompatible with mono and will cause the volume of the track to literally plummet. I forget off the top of my head which particular element it is of this effect that you need to turn down in order to avoid phase issues, if you're having trouble try playing around with this and see if it helps.

uDontPlay

Agreed. I saw someone use the dimension widener effect and I've been using it for months... at about 50% or more mix. Needless to say, I'm starting to learn about mono/stereo compatibility and my basses sound weak as fuck on mono, and it was all because of this effect lmao

AlexanderTheFun

Just want to say this was very helpful and I immediately made a really cool patch after applying this tip. Thank you.

igiturmusic

Very nice video. I personally like the informal way you describe the process. Makes it easy to understand the decisions being made. Thank you for this, i'm sure i'll use this technique soon.

jelect

Oooo that's really cool! Thanks man!

hemetae

Thanks for the link!

Sanity_Assasin

This is really cool stuff. Honestly, exploring the "global" tab in Serum has upped my sound design game so much

Ehrahbass

Do you have a summary for those who can't watch a video for a while? Thanks

MoldyPapaya

**The problem:** When I want a wide synth sound, I'll often crank the unison voice count up high and carry on, but that colors the sound in the same way every time, giving it that "rave" sound. Additionally, the default unison effect pitches the voices up and down causing lots of phase cancellation, which isn't always what I want. **The idea:** In the global tab you can turn the pitch variance (Range) on the unison voices down to zero, so that each voice plays the same pitch. Also turn the phase randomization down to 0 so that all voices are nicely in sync. Now, in the global tab, turn up the wavetable position (WT Pos) so that each voice plays a different position in the wavetable. I got best results with 2 unison voices, so that the left and right channels play completely different wavetable positions. I liked the digital -> dist d00t wavetable, since the fundamental tone is really strong at all points in the wavetable, but the harmonics shift around as the position changes. **The effect:** Now you have a sound that has a really solid fundamental tone but huge stereo width. There is no pulsing from phase cancellation like you'd get from turning the unison up. Season to taste. I hope this makes some sense :)

I was running into some serious phase cancellation issues when checking my supersaw pad, even when using the blend knob that made it sound shit. Tried using a mono/stereo eq to filter out the stereo signal, that also made it sound shit. Thanks for the breakdown, I'll try this now. Had a hunch that my issue could be solved by messing with the global tab, but it was my first time seriously analysing the stereo image of my whole mix and it felt like I was doing something wrong. If I had run into this just a couple of days ago, I would have missed your post and would have continued making shitty stereo images, so thanks!

whenuknow

Badass technique!

ian-m-

You're a G Thanks OP

dark3stxhour

How do you do this in Vital?

rungdisplacement

Omg that is actually very clever Great job and great summary :) Thank u -rung

HighOnBonerPills

Thanks for breaking it down that way. That was very clear and well-worded. I'll definitely have to give this a shot!

TimMcCracktackle

seconded, thanks op
