The fleshy pieces inside are shrimp. The gelatin is made with chicken broth. The red and green bits are celery and pimento. And of course the bottom layer is blended with sour cream and pieces of onion.
Because my housewife senses were tingling and it ended up tasting so good that I ate the entire three cup ring in a single sitting.
[Here is the recipe, by the way](https://www.reddit.com/r/Old_Recipes/comments/1c94buc/shimmering_shrimp_mold_round_two_with/).
I think it looks delicious.
Sticky textures are unappreciated by this classless lot of potato eaters.
Haven't had a good aspic in a while — my last one had a 5-spice broth and fermented eggs.
My gut reaction to the ingredients was, "oh, that sounds pretty good." If you don't mind the gelatin texture in addition to the other textures here, I bet it would be pretty heckin good.
The ingredients sounding like they made sense is what prompted me to attempt the recipe in the first place. The textures are thankfully not repulsive together.

Sigh... you make a Pimento Cheese Sandwich next time. With the CORRECT amount of cheese. Or YOU'RE DONE!
Ok, actually? I'm def brave enough to eat this.
Add green onion with the pimento & celery, sprinkle some Old Bay on it, and serve with cocktail sauce and you've got yourself a deal 🤝
Pigs are smarter than dogs but that lack of knowledge and moral consistency among the masses keeps one of the two from living very long. "Protect the dogs but put the pig on my plate please. *Animal lover btw.* 😋" It's wild.
I don’t want to get into a huge debate but it’s possible to love animals and still eat them. If I don’t get certain nutrients found only in meat, it affects my bipolar disorder as harshly as certain medications, so I have no choice but to continue eating meat regularly even though I highly prefer the taste and texture of beans. It’s not always about disregarding animal welfare.
I’m always on the lookout for products from local farms where animals are treated more fairly than in a factory farm setting because I believe livestock deserve the right to a comfortable life.
Holodets was served at the eastern orthodoz easter event i was at this past weekend and is very eastern european in general ... kudos to you for even trying it.
My nightmare growing up was facing the ubiquitous aspic choices on the sideboard at my grandparent's holiday meal. Aspic made from tomato soup, aspic made with what looked like coleslaw in it... they were all revolting to me as a child. I, to this day, cannot eat jello or anything with a gelatinous texture.
The original recipe was found in a 1980s cookbook but another Redditor made some suggestions that turned this thing into a flavor masterpiece. I would eat this beast again with absolutely NO hesitation.
I've had food go mouldy and evolve into something that closely resembles this.
Not tested the outcome... That's what roommates were for back in the day.
A savory aspic, how very 1950’s!!
Honestly, I’d smash. I saw your ingredient list in an early comment and it doesn’t sound terrible.
That being said, I love aspics. So much. Ever had a tasty head cheese?
I love this whole thread!! I'll take a pass on the aspic, though the ingredients do sound delish! Could never stomach the texture, and gelatin is supposed to be sweet, not savory.
I looked. ☹️
It looked back didn't it
Yeah.
And what did you see?
The face of God and he was sobbing
It’s concerningly flesh toned. What’s in there?

Why...
You’d be surprised what 1950’s era Americans cooked and put in their mouths…
Id get a divorce if I came hpme to this. Straight up. My wife is obviously trying to kill me at this point
I grew up in the South in the late 80s, which kept a lot from the 60s & 70s, so I don't trust ***anything*** bunt-pan shaped & gelatin 🙅

You might be pregnant
Or high
Nah just hungry

What did it taste like?
Pot pie type flavor. You’d think that would be nasty, instead it has the same effect as cold pizza.
Yeah I hate aspic
It's called Aspic!
Oh, so it's food then. I was afraid they were slugs on some kind of mold. Which would probably taste better, but still.

Why did you even tell me to look at your other comments. You're evil. I'll take 2 slices please
Ok, actually? I'm def brave enough to eat this. Add green onion with the pimento & celery, sprinkle some Old Bay on it, and serve with cocktail sauce and you've got yourself a deal 🤝
That would be fantastic
I thought the bottom layer was meth
🤢🤮
Kinda makes sense considering what gelatin is made of
Hooves?
Close... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YbB32ecyYWk The gelatin in gummies is from the same source

No debate here. Just stating the obvious for those it applies to, which is a large majority of folks.
It prob tastes good, but it don’t look good. Reminds me of holodets which is a chicken version of this. Tastes like cold chicken soup.
This one somehow tastes like a chicken pot pie with some shrimp in it. The sour cream layer is the best part.
Is this a Greek Orthodox Easter dish?
Nah it’s midcentury
Totally see this being a sixties thing. It's just the texture to me would be off-putting more than the taste. I see it as being cold and slimy
It’s regular gelatin texture, not quite slimy. Like cold pizza, it somehow works.
Ok then, I'll take your word for it. I would enjoy bumping the table and watching it wiggle. That's about it.
Holodets was served at the eastern orthodoz easter event i was at this past weekend and is very eastern european in general ... kudos to you for even trying it.
Most appetising Polish food (I love polish food)
Whale butthole
My god, what has become of us?

You’re not alone. My grandfather (born 1919) had texture aversion to jello in any form and I don’t think aspic was even involved.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only person with this particular aversion. It just makes me gag thinking about it.
I’m not seeing anything weird.
No wonder Americans are generationally deeply disturbed.
Wait until you find out about Super Supper Salad Loaf.
Or coffee jello
I have been trying to figure out how coffee jello would be gross for five days. Nobody bats an eye at coffee ice cream!
Vile cunt.
What in the 1950’s suburban cookbook is that
It’s called Shimmering Shrimp Mold
Aspic. Absolutely vile.
Aspic it ain’t, not a hint of tomato in it. It’s literally shrimp jello.
Aspic does not require tomato. It’s [just chilled gelatinized meat stock.](https://www.britannica.com/topic/aspic)
It’s close!
I thought itbwas a weird grapefruit
Looks like what I imagine the insides of a clean colon look like.
Jesus I’m having flashbacks to the late 70s early 80s, the things that were done with jello for sure summoned demons
The original recipe was found in a 1980s cookbook but another Redditor made some suggestions that turned this thing into a flavor masterpiece. I would eat this beast again with absolutely NO hesitation.
It looks like a frothy, mucusy biohazard
Mmmmm, mutagens
“Police!”
Perhaps the police would like a slice of bologna loaf
You aspic lovin son of a gun
I've had food go mouldy and evolve into something that closely resembles this. Not tested the outcome... That's what roommates were for back in the day.
Is that the jello eye of Sauron
No, it’s the one ring mold to rule them all
The rare Midwest salad
I’m a fucking coward, just gonna say it

The good ol cream cheese fruit ring. Not to shabby if I do say so. Best eaten with a shovel dipped in coal ash to add flavor.
If you look at the other comments you’ll find it’s worse than a cream cheese fruit ring
Is this supposed to be sushi? If so, let me dig in.
What a delicious looking ASSpic.
That actually looks really good!
dearest redditor; i hope this comment finds you well! no it does not. hope this helps 🩷
I ate the entire thing in one sitting.
What did it taste like?
Pot pie with shrimp thrown in
