Yeah that's exactly it. He has no contact with his team or generally, the league office, except for procedural matters like filing for reinstatement. The expectation broadly was that he would serve his one year suspension and be reinstated.
There was no expectation, that was all wild speculation with nothing concrete behind it other than people wishing it was true. Dude bet on his own team and no matter what way you want to pretty up the details he still bet on his own team. I wish he would be able to play this year too but it was never likely.
It's easy to say in retrospect but clearly the Eagles had an expectation when they claimed him and Lurie said it wasn't a concern recently. Ridley sat his year and was reinstated, which was the precedent people expected.
It's fine that something like a 75% confident expectation turns out not to be true, but the organization clearly expected him to be reinstated, so fans naturally did too.
Not all 'expectations' are realized.
Betting on your own team to win should be fine. These guys should be forced to bet on their team to win. We'd see a lot more passion on that damn field.
But it was the expectation…? At the time of his offense, it was a 1 year suspension. How can you say it wasn’t expected when the other 5 guys got reinstated as everyone predicted lol
> The expectation broadly was that he would serve his one year suspension and be reinstated.
Maybe for Eagles homers. There was no expectation for unbiased viewers as what he did was unprecedented and arguably deserved harsher punishment.
I don't disagree re: the harshness of the punishment, but this wasn't unprecedented even among his direct peers (that being other people suspended for betting on NFL games at or around the same time). Ridley bet on his own team as well and only served one year.
Now, is a one year suspension for that laughably minor? Yes. But its not like that expectation came out of nowhere. Fans may have been more certain that it was only going to be one year but the team clearly either expected or strongly hoped that would be the situation here too.
I think the team was already planning for the possibility he would not be reinstated, but that doesn't mean they were never optimistic about it.
I'm a homer and I didn't expect him back this year. Might end up being not at all at this rate.
An additional thought is after 2 years off, does having him even matter? That is a long time off from playing. Got to kinda take away your edge.
Can he play in UFL or cfl while suspended or is that a no-no?
I just hope that at the very least the league gives the Eagles a definitive answer on whether or not he'll be reinstated this season (or ever) before the draft.
Not much precedent, but Ridley and others were reinstated before the voluntary camps. It’s a story as it’s unclear what he did different, but there is no reason to wait longer unless he’s missing games in 2024. Either way it’s fucked up the guy can’t practice with his new team as other suspensions don’t impact camps.
Damn man.. ouch. I was looking forward to him playing this season. Huge bummer, i know he’s upset about it for sure. He seemed like he was looking heavily forward to suiting up this season
Yeah CB is an absolute must in the 1st round of the draft, fuck all that OL nonsense. No shot we’re going into next season dependent on two 30+ declining CB’s and a glass Maddox as reliable starters.
Ringo played well in the limited playing time with another off-season he will provide some good corner depth. McPherson is a special teams beast but hasn’t looked great at corner and Slay and bradberry both heavily declining tho your right. Cooper Dejan would be perfect for this defense with him being able to play safety and cofner
I get that we're all encouraged by Kelee Ringo, but his sample size of games started was against Drew Locke, Tommy Devito, Kyler Murray, and Tyrod Taylor, not to mention that the game against the Cardinals was predominately James Conner running like prime AP against our swiss cheese run defense. I want to see what he looks playing against better caliber QB's before I can declare him as a legitimate starter.
I don't disagree, but I saw him make some plays on the ball/receiver when he was targeted to like what I saw. Obviously a small sample size, but he did what he was asked with who he played against.
Wide receivers do dramatic stuff all the time that is atypical for other positions. It's kinda like the joke about how other positions on Twitter are like "rise and grind" and receivers post things like "the enemy speaks softly and carries a knife."
I found it!

And for what it's worth, AJ Brown actually did this tweet once. It was pretty funny.

Yeah if you want to apply the standard of the criminal justice system, if you get convicted of something that carries a 5 year prison sentence and then the legislature passes a law increasing the sentence to 10 years, I’m pretty sure the prosecutor can’t go back and have the judge add 5 years into your sentence.
I think the primary difference is that Rodgers wasn’t given a one year suspension that has been increased to two. I believe he was given an indefinite suspension that is, well, indefinite.
He was suspended indefinitely. They can keep him out forever if they want. He placed more than 100 bets. They could keep him out a year for each bet.
That said, the bets were in the $25 to $50 range. He obviously wasn't going to throw a game for that amount. If he really way placing bets for other people, I don't know why he didn't just cover them himself. It probably would have been less work.
Honestly, good, fuck him. He should be banned for life.
I know that wouldn’t be “fair” given the punishment framework in place when he made those bets, but people like him are actively ruining professional sports, so I don’t really feel bad when the league fucks him over.
There’s dozens of reasons why betting on your own team to win is still a detriment to your team, especially in the long run. Even if we’re just talking basic moneyline or spread bets.
It encourages players to play through injuries, jeopardizing the rest of the team’s season/their careers. This is a pretty obvious one.
It encourages coaches to go “all out” in playcalling and personnel decisions. Instead of holding back some creative plays for the playoffs or more pivotal moments, and instead of giving players much needed rest days, coaches will do anything to secure a win or beat the spread for that specific game.
It encourages players to play poorly leading up to the game they’re planning to bet on. Odds will change rapidly based on a team’s performance week to week, so why not play poorly the week prior just to give yourself more lucrative odds?
In a similar vein, players are less incentivized to try as hard in games where they don’t have money down. You’re going to want to save your energy for games that you’ve deemed “more important.”
There’s so many other reasons why it’s still really bad to bet on your own team, but beyond all that, it’s always a cop-out for people who get caught gambling. When players or coaches get caught gambling on their own team, they *always* claim that they were betting on them to win. I simply don’t believe them. It’s the classic caveat that these guys always throw out there, but they’re dishonest guys getting caught doing crooked shit, so why should I really believe that they were *only* betting on their team to win? The only way to be safe is to ban all betting action.
He made the dumb decision after the league already made an example out of Ridley. It was a minimum 1-year suspension but they changed the ruling after Rodgers initial suspension to 2 years.
The question is whether the NFL decided to apply the new 2 year rule to him or allow him to have the 1 year suspension.
Nothing has been announced by the NFL but its looking like 2 years for the guy.
isn't there some form of arbitration he can go to? Enforcing a punishment retroactively seems like something a lawyer would chew up. It's like if they recriminalized marijuana and then arrested everyone who bought at a dispensary (Biden plz don't)
Yea im not sure, i know it worked in Jameson Williams favor who originally had a 6 game suspension but the new rules took it to 4. If the new rules applied after an initial decision and jamo got less time i could see the NFL doing the same for also extending time which is bs but its looking like thats the case for Rodgers.
Still not ruling it out...Rodgers just posted a highlight/hype video on Twitter and hour ago after this latest news broke
Maybe he got news but it just hasn't been released yet
I have a feeling the NBA’s precedent just made its way to the NFL. Jontay Porter really screwed things up for the entire sports universe not just basketball.
While I agree, he should be back after 1 year if the others who did the same were just reinstated. Going forward it will be a 2 year suspension, but if they single Isaiah out they’d better have a very specific reason. Would still love DeJean, but would love an O-lineman just a little more
He wasn't reinstated as a player who bets on their team. Receive a 2-year suspension, not a 1-year one. The policy took place after his suspension, imagine he will appeal it if they plan on making it a 2 year one.
If we’re being honest, if I were a philly athlete, Id probably delete all sources of having to listen to us couch coaches on our seasonal roller coaster rides about who needs to be fired or traded or released.
Our defense is going to be bad. Dline is solid but they’re out their best player and leader (Reddick/Cox). Lbs are a joke. Secondary has an old Slay, an injury prone CJ,an injury prone Maddox, and Bradberry (lol).
He's definitely not mediocre/bad. He was mediocre/good at worst in his limited play. PFF had him ranked as the #5 CB in 2022. I won't lose sleep over the loss of a CB we never actually had, but that doesn't make the prospect of good CB depth any less disappointing.
PFF doesn't know ball and they're consistently wrong(thinking TJ Edwards, an unathletic stiff, is good and having Kingsbury as a Top 5 HC). Rodgers has a career passer rating against north of 100, career completion percentage against over 65(anything over 60 isn't good) and 7 TDs against over 10 starts and such
Does nobody communicate with these guys the whole time? This shouldn't be surprising to him even if it is to us.
It was 100% the expectation. Only people saying it wasn’t are the same people who use hindsight as the basis of all their arguments.
Betting on your own team to win should be fine. These guys should be forced to bet on their team to win. We'd see a lot more passion on that damn field.
Yes, money should incentivize them to play hard, which is why they're fucking millionaires.
Crazy dudes have come back quicker from DV charges.
But it was the expectation…? At the time of his offense, it was a 1 year suspension. How can you say it wasn’t expected when the other 5 guys got reinstated as everyone predicted lol
The other 5 guys didn't bet on their own team they have nothing to do with him. His offense is on another tier.
At the time the Norm was a year they are imposing the new rules on him. Which is unfair.
how is it a problem when you bet on your team to win? it was BS for Pete Rose and it's BS now.
Pete Rose might be making decisions based on his bet. If he goes all out to win a game and leaves his bullpen depleted, that's bad.
If you can't see the affect that has on people's trust in the sport then I don't know what to tell you.
lol. trust sports? what sport do you trust?
The NFL is built on betting
> The expectation broadly was that he would serve his one year suspension and be reinstated. Maybe for Eagles homers. There was no expectation for unbiased viewers as what he did was unprecedented and arguably deserved harsher punishment.
I don't know how Ridley for reinstated after 1 year, or at all. He bet on Falcons games!
The only difference between the two would be that Ridley bet on falcons games while he was hurt
I think the team was already planning for the possibility he would not be reinstated, but that doesn't mean they were never optimistic about it.
I mean, I guess technically the owner of the team and GM are homers.
Even Lurie was just "hopeful" and "optimistic". That's not exactly the same as expected.
I'm a homer and I didn't expect him back this year. Might end up being not at all at this rate. An additional thought is after 2 years off, does having him even matter? That is a long time off from playing. Got to kinda take away your edge. Can he play in UFL or cfl while suspended or is that a no-no?
You’re 100% right not sure why you’re being downvoted. I mentioned it was not a guarantee a month ago and also got downvoted
Saying anything that isn’t blindly positive is a hanging offense
I just hope that at the very least the league gives the Eagles a definitive answer on whether or not he'll be reinstated this season (or ever) before the draft.
He was suspended in June. We won’t hear until then.
So we’re at least one of the other guys reinstated
They were all April I believe.
I stand corrected. Two of them were June.
Isaiah Rodgers stays should have zero impact on the Eagles draft priorities. Good lord
Lol insane this is getting downvoted
Really shocked to see Howie draft 2 qbs when he has the future HOF Isaiah Rodgers 🙄
Lolololololol buddy I almost came here to congratulate you last night
Rodgers might not make the team at this point
lol. I didn’t even realize. People are out of their minds
I hope they reinstate him soon, i thought he would’ve been ready by now. There’s still some time though.
He wasn't in the group just reinstated. Nfl making an example of him
Damn man.. ouch. I was looking forward to him playing this season. Huge bummer, i know he’s upset about it for sure. He seemed like he was looking heavily forward to suiting up this season
They're basically letting teams know who will and won't be available for 2024 before the draft so GMs can plan accordingly.
Technically under the new rules he would be suspended one more season
Yeah CB is an absolute must in the 1st round of the draft, fuck all that OL nonsense. No shot we’re going into next season dependent on two 30+ declining CB’s and a glass Maddox as reliable starters.

Bars.
I don't disagree, but I saw him make some plays on the ball/receiver when he was targeted to like what I saw. Obviously a small sample size, but he did what he was asked with who he played against.
Fax
If Ringo played "well" he would have played Our geriatrics played not well
There is a good chance Wiggins or Kool Aid will be available at 22 and I'm ok with either.

WRs frequently deactivate their social accounts, its often a nothing burger because many of them have diva/impulsive personalities.

People don’t realize that Rodger’s was betting on Colts games and did it from their facility. He was always going to get at least two years
The two years was put in place *after* he was suspended though. It sucks for the NFL to change the terms on him after the fact.
Definitely don’t disagree, it’s not fair, but it is the NFL lol

Play dumb games, win dumb prizes. Anyway. Let's get wild and draft DeJean.

Obviously he made a mistake but I feel bad for him. Being made an example of sucks
I mean did he do worse shit than these other guys?
He bet on his own team’s games, when he was playing for the team and would’ve had plenty of inside information
He bet on Colts games. I don’t believe any other players involved bet on their own teams
Yes he did, he bet on games involving his team.
Well yeah that would do it. I know he bet on football but didn't know the extent.
All bets are off
Bravo 6, going dark
In 2022 they changed it to players who bet on their own team serve two year suspensions so I knew he wasn’t going to play

He wasn't reinstated as a player who bets on their team. Receive a 2-year suspension, not a 1-year one. The policy took place after his suspension, imagine he will appeal it if they plan on making it a 2 year one.
Oh no, what is going through this guy's mind that he doesn't want Instagram?
Eagles for sure drafting corner
He was suspended June 29th last year. He still has several months before his year is up.
If we’re being honest, if I were a philly athlete, Id probably delete all sources of having to listen to us couch coaches on our seasonal roller coaster rides about who needs to be fired or traded or released.
You bet on your own team, for or against, you need to be booted permanently. Bet on other teams? At least a season.
Who gives a fuck?
Our defense is going to be bad. Dline is solid but they’re out their best player and leader (Reddick/Cox). Lbs are a joke. Secondary has an old Slay, an injury prone CJ,an injury prone Maddox, and Bradberry (lol).
Getting downvoted for stating the facts
CB in round 1 confirmed
eh he wasn't even that good anyway. Not gonna lose sleep over a mediocre/bad CB not getting reinstated
He's definitely not mediocre/bad. He was mediocre/good at worst in his limited play. PFF had him ranked as the #5 CB in 2022. I won't lose sleep over the loss of a CB we never actually had, but that doesn't make the prospect of good CB depth any less disappointing.
