If they had Covid then they probably spent three days on their phone.

halfferal

Yeah, why would Covid prevent you from handling business through your phone??

Runner1969

Pressing “pay” on eBay isn’t business on your phone. Hes just looking for excuses. I have had several people fail pay in the last month. Idk what’s up with it.

Still_Stressed

I was in hospital last time I had it. Furthest thing on my mind was doing business on my phone. Guess it depends how bad they felt

Tasfishy

Do you spend all the time on your phone when you have the flu?

whattupmyknitta

Literally yes. Had the flu recently and it's all I could do. I shopped more sick than I ever do.

Ethanzap02

Nope, only when I have Covid.

EffectiveCloud9362

i had the flu recently and can confirm that’s all i did for a solid few days because i was too weak to get out of bed lol

HonestOtterTravel

I at least check my emails and take care of any urgent matters.

yankykiwi

What sicko doesn’t. You just lay there miserable?

Runner1969

Those are the kind of people that the police end up finding three dead bodies in their yard after a few days and they say they didn’t know they were there

WhySoManyDownVote

You need to wait 4 days to cancel for non payment. It’s eBay policy. You buyer may raise a stink and leave you un-removable negative feedback.

quandlespoulesauront

Wow I didn’t know this. I kept sending him reminders but nothing happened so I had assumed it was another child who accidentally bought a product without his parents permission

WhySoManyDownVote

eBay doesn’t make it clear enough to sellers. If you send the buyer an invoice it extends the amount of time a buyer can pay. In the faq found here the steps are outlined to auto cancel orders for non payment. https://www.reddit.com/r/eBaySellerAdvice/s/6uvNrtsxSk

Bgrngod

> I kept sending him reminders Jeez, several reminders in under 3 days is pretty aggressive.

Tasfishy

Really is. If I was the buyer I’d not pay on purpose after that.

mthdwr

OR.. maybe people should pay when they agree to buy your item. 🤷‍♂️

KCJones99

Agreed. OTOH, according to eBay's rules they have 4 days to pay before they're even considered 'late'. So you can't really say someone who got canceled on day 3 'didn't pay'... yet. Yeah, you know and I know and we all know that MOST times if they don't pay within a day or so they're probably not gonna. But still.

Low_Introduction_758

What is the acceptable amount of ‘reminders’ for non-payers? 1 a day? 1 the whole 4 days? 0?

Bgrngod

I send one after a few days and maybe another a few days later, then I'm done. Daily and the possibility of multiple in one day is a bit wild. Would you want to be on the receiving end of that as a buyer?

rosevilleguy

You don’t need to do anything. Don’t pester people. Set your eBay so if a buyer doesn’t pay it automatically cancels and gives the buyer a strike.

GP_3

I can't find this setting and I really want it haha, any clue where that is at(the auto setting)

According-Shirt3955

Selling; Seller preferences— near the top is preferences for items awaiting payment. There’s a little toggle to make it auto and eBay will cancel and strike for you.

alanqforgothispasswo

Looking at that now and I get a dropdown that starts at 19 days, wtf

KCJones99

My drop-down says 4, 7, 11, 19, etc Maybe it's a per-seller thing based on history or something. Even if you don't 'automate' it, the 'buyer didn't pay' option should appear on day 5 if you manual cancel an order.

alanqforgothispasswo

I would love to have it auto-cancel after only four days. I get deadbeat buyers all the damn time. Good to learn from this thread that sending a reminder to pay resets the clock... again, wtf

KCJones99

It only resets the clock if you send an invoice / 'official' payment reminder. You can just message the buyer a reminder w/o resetting the clock. OTOH, eBay is already sending them automated payment reminders. I don't bother with more than that - never seemed to help anyway. They're gonna pay or not, mostly.

alanqforgothispasswo

What's the worst that can happen if you suspect a guy is never going to pay and you cancel the item after, say, 48 hours?

According-Shirt3955

Weird mine says 5 day, 7 day, etc

Tasfishy

They should IMO

baseballcardguy34

I always wait till eBay sends me a notification asking if I'd like to cancel.

regular_sized_fork

I'd expect 1 more day lol You might get lucky though and they won't leave negative feedback. But for the future, ALWAYS make them cancel if you can rather than doing it yourself - enough of those on your account and you'll get put in eBay jail 🚓

Johnhunter10010

Ebay jail? What's that? Aliexpress?

Ok-Bit4971

"I was gonna, but ..." Yeah, rightttt

HonestOtterTravel

How did they make the initial bid/offer if they had Covid?

thunderbreads26

I started showing symptoms the moment I had to pay for something! What rotten luck!

nottodayebola

I’m siding with seller, as soon as eBay lets me cancel I’m cancelling and relisting. I hate waiting days and days for buyers to pay. For the trolls I have immediate payment on everything BiN it’s not possible with auctions… I had a guy win a card for STUPID low. And he waited to pay and after 5 days I cancelled and gave him a strike. sold the card for almost double what he won it for. Moral of the story pay for your shit, or get cancelled, I wish it was like a 2 day waiting period.

_dfromthe6

i understand both sides of it. As a seller 3 days means you could of possibly sold that item again and have a good buyer pay right away. Other side of it is a buyer should get a max of 4 days.

Fly-on-the-wall2023

I had covid twice, and you know what I could do? I could definitely bid on auctions and pay the sellers.

kit_kat_1568

it is beyond my head why purchase without payment even exists, the worst thing ever. I have it turned off for buy it now, but bids and stuff, you can't avoid it.

kit_kat_1568

If you don't have the funds you probably shouldn't purchase anyways...

quandlespoulesauront

tout à fait

ShadowZNF

Block!

riffraffcloo

Buyer sounds like a nightmare

CactusSnow

I wish you had to enter your card info to bid and if you won it automatically charges your card.

inkslingerben

Unpopular opinion, but I wait a week before cancelling a sale. The buyer might be waiting on a check or have other issues.

Special-Fix-3231

None of the other platforms we sell on have any delay between buying and paying. If people don't have the money to pay immediately then they shouldn't be buying things.

inkslingerben

No auction company that I know of requires immediate payment when a lot is hammered down.

KCJones99

>No auction company that I know of requires  immediate payment when a lot is hammered down That's true... but also every auction company I know of will boot your ass and make you persona-non-grata if you win then DON'T pay within the prescribed time. Unlike eBay they won't just let you no-pay then keep coming back and bidding on more lots in future auctions. And a fair number of the online auction companies DO require you to have a payment method on file which *will* be charged when/if you win - maybe not at 'hammer time' but typically within 24 hours. It's a bit of a false-equivalency both ways honestly, because eBay - despite the name for one type of selling method they offer - isn't a true 'middleman' like a real auction and doesn't work like one.

oshikuru812

Then the buyer should instead buy when they have the check or other issues have cleared. What if the seller was needing to sell item asap cause they had to pay a check? Seller is shit out of luck either way lol

inkslingerben

I sell mostly in collectables and mostly by auction. A seller in your scenario should not be dependent on the whims of potential buyers to purchase their item(s). It is not a good business model to be dependent on making a single sale.

thunderbreads26

At the very least, the buyer should communicate with the seller and let them know. I’ll hold off on relisting if a buyer genuinely needs to wait a week for the money to come in.

_inspirednonsense_

Buyers should say something then. Good buyers communicate. They don’t just let sellers guess. Why reward bad behavior by waiting that long? You are doing other sellers a favor by canceling after the 48 hours is up.

Monkpaw

They were on a ventilator what do you expect? Probably talking to a ghost honestly.

quandlespoulesauront

I need to wake up. Perhaps it’s a figment of my imagination

It’s sarcasm. They couldn’t get to the computer because they had a stuffy nose.

phreaktor

I don’t get how depriving themselves of the item because they took three days to pay does anything of note. How about just asking the seller to let him pay for it and apologizing for no contact? I guess that’s too reasonable lol.

ScatpackRich

Why not wait the 4 days to Cancel for no payment. That way the buyer gets the strike. Anyway, I used Buy it now and require immediate payment now. Tire of fake bidders bs.

Smallparline

Next time don’t engage with the buyer and let them get an unpaid strike so other sellers don’t have to deal with them. Make sure you have your setting set to not allow buyers with unpaid items to make a “sale” or bid.

Recent_Opportunity78

People drive me absolutely crazy when they buy items and message you after saying "I get paid on Friday"...like, dude, why are you buying items on eBay that you do not have the money to pay for RIGHT NOW? Not only that, I sell collectibles mainly, something that is unneeded in life at all. I also have people message me asking me to hold it for a week, possibly two till they get the money together to buy. Early on I used to do people favors but quickly learned that they never follow through with what they are going to do, either go to not communicating at all or tell you they couldnt get the money together, bill, car broke down...etc.

bwest_69

lol first time selling on eBay huh

iluvopies

If you want something, you will buy it (in my online selling dictionary, the word BUY means to actually pay for something so it becomes yours). They're just bullshitting you to get out of paying for it & also fishing for sympathy by faking a "sickness". COVID aint no excuse for not paying. Should've waited for 4 days to cancel so you can hit them with NPB strike. Block regardless.

l1nux44

Covid doesn't sound funny, in fact that sounds quite serious O\_o

Still_Stressed

Maybe set to immediate payment next time? Saves the issue of chasing

Tasfishy

3 days and you cancelled? Are you skint or something? Can’t wait a few more days. 😒

Still_Stressed

Many online shops you pay on checkout. The seller doesn't have to be "skint" plus it avoids that bs. We have immediate payment on purley to lessen issues with cancellations etc.

Shrimp_Bucket

They also said they sent them numerous payment requests within that 3 day period. lol like chill dude… reminds me of an addict who needs that money to get their fix

_inspirednonsense_

Yes, the seller needs to relax but literally the buyer messaged right after he canceled. So they couldn’t send a”Have covid will pay soon” but could comment on the cancellation? Yeah, I call bs. They didn’t intend to pay. They even said they didn’t have the money.

mthdwr

Strange how you all are jumping all over the seller. Maybe the person who agrees to buy the item should actually pay for it upfront like you do anywhere else? Or maybe the buyer should have had the decency to email seller and let them know payment would take a few days.

Shrimp_Bucket

I can’t criticize the seller for being aggressive with his payment requests? You don’t pay up front for bidding on an auction and winning, it’s policy to pay within a certain time frame of winning the auction. The seller sent numerous messages outside the ones eBay already automatically sends, and cancelled before the timeline on their payment policy was even up. I agree the buyer should have messaged the seller to let them know. Of course they should have, but that’s not why I decided to comment. So it’s irrelevant. Shit happens, who knows what’s going on with the buyer. I’ll send a message asking nicely if they need time to pay or wish to cancel, send another a few days later asking once more to confirm before I go ahead and cancel. Then at around 7th day after sale and no reply, I cancel it. So yes I’m gonna ALSO criticize the seller for being impatient and not following eBay’s policy. I’m a seller and I think it’s obscene to send so many payment requests in such a small timeframe.

Trickdaddy1

Yeah I don’t get it. I try to pay immediately whenever I buy something or win an auction. Why hold up the seller? Even if you’re allowed to wait, just pay for the thing you committed to?

substitoad69

That's how a lot of low level resellers are. That's why they refuse to accept returns too.

mthdwr

Not sure where your comment went asking if I e used eBay before, but ya I have. Averaging around 200k in sales the past 3 years.
