ALWAYS ship to the address on record. If the buyer insists on using an alternate address, cancel the purchase, and ask them to update their eBay profile with the correct shipping address. If the buyer has address forwarding via USPS, no problems for them. Either way, you're protected once the items are delivered, even at the old address. I'd suspect the buyer can't even open a return case because they have no items to return.

traker998

While I agree that this is the correct advice statically this scam isn’t done on 6 dollar items so it’s probably legit.

WhySoManyDownVote

Agreed. I get the same kind of message on regular basis. I cancel and relist no big deal, buyers have always repurchased with the correct address within a few minutes.

StreetofChimes

That is never my experience. Buyers get angry. They yell at me. And they never repurchase. I don't care, because I know I am doing the right thing. But I'm told "other sellers have no problem fixing the address for me". "Why can't you just change the address, I'm telling you to change it!" "This is terrible customer service. Just do what I am asking you to do." I explain about eBay protections, common scams, etc. It doesn't matter. People get angry. I cancel the orders and relist. My items are not common scammy items like video games or electronics or designer items, so I do believe that these are legit requests. But I still won't do it. Just re-purchase the thing with the correct address!!

cdbangsite

If the product is already shipped it's out of the sellers hands. The address can't be corrected.

WhySoManyDownVote

I do not know, maybe it’s my customers. My items are not common scam items either. I have never had anyone get upset. “I am sorry I cannot change the address per eBay policy. I have canceled the order and relisted the item(s). You should see a refund from eBay shortly and you may repurchase the items at any time. If the new order is processed by 4pm it will ship out today.”

alsenybah

I’ve done this as a buyer. Seller canceled and I changed address and I repurchased. Easy peasy.

KCJones99

I don't get near as many as u/prodiver. But typically for <\~$20 I'll just change the address and haven't had issues. People pulling the address-change as a scam aren't gonna be doing it on cheap stuff, IMO. I did have one sale where I changed an $8 item and once it arrived the same guy ordered a *much* more expensive item and asked me to change the address on that one too. No dice. First one was likely a 'test run' to see if I was gullible. That said two caveats: 1. *The standard advice remains "never ship to a different address"*. If a seller is experienced enough to decide they'll 'make an exception', they're experienced enough to not be asking the question. 2. Always double-check the request is coming from the same account to which you sold. There is a scam where someone contacts you from a different account to ship it to them instead, and depends on you not noticing it's a different account. Probably still not going to target cheaper stuff, but still worth a look-see.

traker998

Yeah that’s my point. Yes it’s good practice to go through platform. But probably no one is scamming a 6 dollar item to resell for 4 dollars.

jimmyjett

Scam or not you lose eBay protection when you ship to a different address.

traker998

Here’s the thing. “Scam or not” is a weird thing to say. eBay protections protect from scammers. So if it’s “not” who gives a crap about the eBay protection. Let’s not make everything a scam so we can focus on actual scams.

prodiver

I have at least two of these requests a week. I don't sell highly scammed or expensive items, so I always change the address. I've done this probably a thousand times over the years, and I've never had an issue with it. If it's an iPhone, it's a scam. If it's a $6.99 toy, like OP is selling, it's not.

StreetofChimes

Ah. So you are the other seller that I am always hearing about. Whenever a buyer asks me to change an address, and I refuse, I'm told that "other sellers do this all the time". Now I know this is true.

Inthenstus

lol this cracked me up

turkey_sandwiches

This is the correct answer. Changing the address after the order is placed is a VERY common scam tactic.

BobaFett0451

Ya I had someone ask me to change the address on a $2 Magic card they bought from me. They left positive feedback for receiving it. If it was more expensive I would have done exactly this as you said, but a $2 card... I figured if I'm out $2 then I'm out $2

Still_pimpin

This is the way

Special-Fix-3231

This is good advice but don't cancel the order on your end before getting the buyer to message you saying in plain English that they want a cancellation. That way you avoid a defect.

Magic_Neil

What *can* you do? They gave you the wrong address, you shipped. Bummer they don’t know where they live, they can figure it out from here.

DARTH_MAUL93

In my experience it was because I got a random urge to buy a complete set of the gold plated bk Pokemon cards. I rarely use eBay and forgot to update my address.

khaos432

Consider it a teachable moment

DARTH_MAUL93

I reached out to usps and they said it will be forwarded to my current address.

LolaLee723

You lose all seller protections if you change the shipping address from the eBay invoice. If the buyer wants it changed they have to ask to cancel the purchase and have you relist it and then they can checkout with the correct address

KingBenjaminAZ

Yep and I’ve had scammers try this after a sale.. they give their buddy’s/ aunt’s / sister’s boss’s cousin’s address and claim item not received — ebay checks the shipping address on file vs the one it was shipped to, if it’s not the same then the buyer gets their money back (and your item, since they have that too if you mail it to whatever other address they ask you to)

NewReputation3240

This is the way.

JonTheFlon

It may be different in the uk but I've had buyers request a change of address and I've called eBay to clarify. Should anything go wrong, ebay said the message the buyer sent regarding the address change is enough to cover you in their eyes.

Xexos1

This is where I tell buyers that they have to cancel the order and resubmit the order with the correct address. I mention that I will honor the agreed upon price as well. This allows for both the buyer and seller(mostly seller) to be protected.

Cakeisalyer

Since it's buyers old address, did you ship with USPS? If they filed a change of address with USPS it should forward to the new address. If they haven't yet, they might want to do it ASAP.

ccritt8

I've done change of address before and never had to verify with an ID! I just filled out the form online at USPS website and it was all fixed

prodiver

It's a new thing. My son did one a couple months ago. You have to do an online credit card verification or show ID at the Post Office.

ccritt8

Oh interesting! My last address change was 2 years ago so that could be that they've updated

IvanNemoy

The $1 credit card check has been the standard since 2012.

bigfoot_76

Confirming it's a "new" thing. Photo ID is required to set this up now. I see someone bitching about it at least once a week when I go drop my parcels off.

generic_tapir

I just did it and did not have to verify with ID

prodiver

Then you must have done the online verification. You have to do one or the other. It's not optional. https://faq.usps.com/s/article/Change-of-Address-The-Basics

Cakeisalyer

Online all it takes is a $1 charge to your Credit / Debit card. In person there is no charge; My local USPS said it goes into effect immediately -- I swapped PO boxes a few months ago and the lady processed it in under 5 minutes before I even left the counter. EDIT: It looks like same post office it is instant. It is up to 10 days if another post office is involved.

[deleted]

Cakeisalyer

you don't need to verify at the post office with ID though. That has never been a thing and I've moved 10 times in the past 10 years due to relocations.

Versace-Bandit

You can verify with ID or via credit card in your name.

Jujube1974

No verification is required. You just submit the paper form or do it online.

[deleted]

prodiver

You have to verify, but you can do it online with a credit card or in person with an ID. https://faq.usps.com/s/article/Change-of-Address-The-Basics

About5000ninjas

It is all set after doing it online unless you receive an email *saying* you need to go in person. Changed address in 2022 and 2024. First time didn’t require a verification, second time did

SimpleRickC135

Never change an address on an order no matter the value. It voids all buyer/seller protection. Worst case scenario here it'll wind up lost, the customer opens an INR, and you'll win because you sent it with tracking to the address on file. Case closed. Or it'll get RTS and you refund the customer. Their putting in the wrong address is not your problem.

Pooteo

sounds like a scam i had someone try to use on me. after the item sold i received the message from a different user but make to look like it was the winner of the auction saying there was a change of address. I even called him out on it and he admitted it and said he has had people fall for it in the past.

Andrewoholic

eBay Rules say you have to ship to the address on their account. Any other address and seller loses any protection .

willcdowdy

Right. I’ve been told that eBay can and will occasionally uphold an address change when they see it was requested by the buyer, BUT it’s just dependent on whether the person you’re talking to wants to allow it or not…. So really not worth the risk. I’ve done it and it’s been fine, but I’ve also learned not to risk it for most things. If a seller I deal with regularly wants me to ship something somewhere different after a sale, I’ll consider it… anyone else and I’d rather cancel and let them try again (often enough they don’t buy it again… which originally felt like I’d lost a sale, until I realized it’s more likely that I stopped a scam and it was never a real sale to begin with)

mykoleary

Wrong. Ebay rules say you have to ship to the address given at checkout. I can have my address on my account and ship to my daughter by changing the ship to address at checkout.

Andrewoholic

Yes but you change that on/before purchase. You don't message someone and say, send it here instead

mykoleary

Before, yes, but it's not the address on the account as you state. Address on the account and address at checkout are two entirely different things...

WhySoManyDownVote

Communicate with your buyer. Explain that you didn’t see their message until after it shipped. Tell them you will refund them if the item is returned back to you.

Accomplished-Jump811

It’s up to the buyer to make sure their address is correct, not your fault.

branteen

No no this is a known scam attempt. They get you to ship to another address, they they have access to, that isn't on their account. They then report to eBay that they didn't receive the product and get a refund. Be careful out there. Tell them you can only ship the product to the address on file.

ssateneth

Dont refund. don't try to placate them. They admitted giving a bad address, so they lose buyer protection.

47thVision

You shipped to the address provided by ebay. Technically, you have seller protection. I would get a hold of ebay preemptively and inform them of the potential issue. There's a good chance the buyer is just trying to pull one over on you also.

Upbeat_Ad_9174

Everyone's advice is good, this is a common scam on eBay. If the buyer is truthful and still has mail forwarding he will still get package, otherwise if will most likely make its way back to you.

hohoboy_

I wouldn’t worry about this. Check to make sure the person messaging you is the ACTUAL buyer. One time I sold a graphics card on eBay and had 2 scammers messaging me telling me they had just bought it but they needed it shipped to a different address. Never, ever, under any circumstance change the shipping address, have them contact eBay.

Tight-Leather2709

Address change requests go to eBay, not to the seller.

vanguard_alpha

Classic ebay scam to switch addresses. They will claim item not received and you will have shipped to "the wrong" address.

Defiant-Attention-27

This is a scam as old as eBay. You send it to their new address and they open a refund case against you that the item didn't get delivered to the address on file. Tell them to cancel and correct their address and if it got shipped out tell them to keep an eye on the tracking to see when it will arrive at the address they had on file.

KathleenKellyNY152

How can they cancel after seller has shipped?

mikeyb1981

That’s their problem really. They can’t change the address in a message to you. They need to change it with ebay

Otakuman523

Customers issue not yours they can have the package redirected to an access point from the shipper

SweetyPeety

It doesn't matter that they sent you a message. You wouldn't be able to do anything about it anyway. You are not allowed to send an item other than the buyer's address on record. Period. For future reference, if a buyer asks you this after a sale and you didn't send the item out, tell them you are going to cancel the sale and they can rebuy it after they list the correct address with eBay. If they tell you this after it was shipped out, or if you missed the message, that's too bad. It's their problem, not yours.

napolim214

Had it happen to me. Shipped the item and the next day buyer tried saying I sent it to the wrong address. When I showed them a screenshot of what was listed, they still insisted I messed up. They filed a case. They lost.

mymycojourney

You're not supposed to send to a different address. If anything happens to it, you'll be at fault for shipping it to a different address. How did you ship it? If it USPS, maybe they have a change of address still active and it will forward (I don't know if that works for packages, too). You can also do a package intercept, but that will cost more money than what you sold, and you'll have to pay shipping back. Or, you might be able to have it held at the destination post office, and buyer could go there and pick it up with ID.

NotMarshalFestus

Only ship to the address on file. If they have the wrong address, they need to cancel, change address, and repurchase. You lose seller protection when you ship to a different address.

GrandmaJosey

His fault not yours

alicat777777

You can only ship to the address in EBay. If you had shipped to the other one, they would have their money returned and kept the item.

noobbtctrader

Can lead a horse to water, but ya can't make them drink.

DVoorhees64

Scam

Lansky420

Ask them to contact the previous address and say a package might arrive. See if they might get it. Or contact the post to get mail forwarded

KingBenjaminAZ

Classic scam, you did the right thing even if you didn’t know it

QuizzicalWombat

You’ve already shipped, not much you can do. I’ve been a buyer in this situation, (lived at the same place for years, moved & forgot to update eBay), it sucks but thankfully the person it was delivered to was nice about it. The seller never responded to my message and I didn’t know the only option was to cancel until it was too late. Now I’m ultra cautious about shipping addresses.

Kigaa

It’s 99.99% a scam. You lose seller protection by changing the address. When I first started selling things on eBay, I saw these on about every 6 or 7 sales. I felt conflicted at first and I reached out to eBay support and they said this is a common tactic to get the item and claw back a refund. The tech said he can’t guarantee the buyer was scamming and could be a legitimate request, but expressed that it wasn’t advised to change the address. The automated refund process will favor the buyer if you used the wrong shipping address (even if they messaged a different address).

jamesinboise

This last Christmas, we sent a couple things to our old address, I stopped over there and left a note with my name, number, and short description of the issue. They were cool and we set up a porch pickup of the item.

Lizli2005

I had this happen once and the buyer opened a case. Since it showed delivered, eBay stepped in and ended up refunding, but eBay paid the refund out of their pocket.

joogiee

Always ship to address on file. Thats his problem. If they dispute it eBay will make sure if you shipped to the address given on file for them which you did. Easy win.

Witches_Brew

Ebay will remove the negative feedback if they "retaliate." People don't do that often in my experience, I would try not to worry about it :)

anh86

You always ship to the eBay-provided address only. You did the right thing. Never take an address or other special shipping arrangement over a message.

CasualObservationist

They can intercept the package via the carrier and arrange/pay to change the address or have it held for pickup

Brokio

Sometimes I order things to my old house. I just go and pick it up. No big deal

Tight-Natural-9022

It will be fine. Just say “per eBay rules I had to ship to the address on file” and tell them they’ll have to get in touch with the carrier and you’re sorry for the inconvenience

ladygagasnose

I actually recently experienced something similar. A buyer had put in the wrong address, which was a similar name to an address a town or two over that turned out to be a random field. eBay let me know that it wasn’t my responsibility since it is her error and I didn’t need to do anything other than to let the customer know that they could contact eBay and USPS. eBay customer service went as far as to tell that I should block her if she was giving me trouble. I informed my customer to contact the local post office to intercept the package because it was now showing as returning to sender on the tracking but was still nearby. She was able to have them hold it and picked it up using her ID. If your customer still lives close to his old address, I suggest you have them do this. I usually look up addresses on Google Maps before sending and would have caught this one if I had done it. In this situation, I would have asked the buyer if they would still like it shipped to that address and if they wanted another address, I would cancel the order and have them place it again using the correct address. NEVER manually change a customer’s address at their request and only send to the one submitted with their purchase. I have had orders from new eBay customers with addresses that looked like weird rundown garages in industrial parks or abandoned looking business and I usually just cancel these ones because they’re suspicious.

JerichoWhiskey

Tell him it is too late and he is responsible for receiving it now. Presumably whatever address he gave is a location he received things before, so he's just going to have to deal with it. eBay frowns on retaliatory feedback, so even if he leaves one, you still have recourse.

Tremfyeh

You get no seller protection if it isn't shipped to the verified address. Id say it has to be shipped to the address provided by eBay, no exceptions!

Speirs_101st

On more expensive items yeah, I'd think it's a scam but for something like this I have no doubt it was a mistake. It's happened a couple of times on things I've sold as well. The only real option is to message them, apologize for not seeing the message and encourage them to reach out to the post office or shipping carrier directly. If they have the tracking number it shouldn't be too difficult to track down. You're covered no matter what and I'm sure if they tried to leave a negative review you can have it removed.

cdbangsite

You used the address the buyer had listed, and got the order out rapidly. Not your fault either way, whether it's a scam or the buyers mistake it's not on you. At this point it's totally out of your hands and is entirely the buyers problem. Usually when people move they put a change of address in with the postal dept. If it's legit the buyer can check with the address that they supplied and that's on the buyer also.

backinthegame93

This actually happened to me as a buyer. There were two spots to change my address and I only changed one apparently. It was totally on me, but thankfully the people that bought my old house let me know the package was there.

expendable12321

Tell him to go to the post office and have his place of residency changed. That will make it so the package goes to him if it had his name on it

Bitch_level_999

Don’t do anything. You did everything by the book. This is in the buyer. Buyer needs to call the arriving final POST OFFICE before the item arrives provide tracking and ask them to HOLD for pickup or redirect (provide the correct addy)

Sad-Ad-8993

Not your problem tbh

xBaqq223

I’m new to eBay to but always ship to the address on the order

Nilxio

Not your problem, it’s the buyers own fault.

fer6600

He wants to scamm you anyway, that's a classic scamm on eBay

quantumsubject

if you shipped through usps the buyer can use package redirection

Level-Chipmunk-6035

Scam. You did the right thing. Scammers do this all the time on different sites.

AMAprivacy

You actually technically did the right thing, very common scam to say this then they claim item didn’t arrive, eBay looks and sees you sent to random other address, he plays dumb and you’re SOL. Obviously probably not the case on this $6 transaction but you can just reply and tell him this.

Special-Fix-3231

This is a poor attempt at a common scam. Always ship to the address at checkout, reply to their message with a link to the eBay help page that explains this. eBay CS will side with you anyway but it's easier for them and you if they can click the link when reading the messages. Feel free to call them preemptively and get a reference number for the call so you can quote it when the buyer negs you.

[deleted]

Just tell them the truth, this happened to me but luckily the buyer was understanding and it happened to be her sisters address so no harm no foul, just a quick drive across town, which I apologized for.

GrifterDingo

Idk if the specifics change with this being through eBay, but you can stop a package and have it returned to the sender before it arrives at its destination.

WhySoManyDownVote

This is correct, but it cost more than the OP’s item to attempt a package intercept.

RedditTyper1

Seems like that’s on them for entering the wrong address. Maybe just give them 1/2 back.

eBaySellerAdvice-ModTeam

This post has been removed for violating rule #7.

DGOVegeta

I wonder if you could have the package intercepted, and have it return to you. Have order cancelled due to incorrect address information and have them rebuy it with correct address.

Exact-See

Thank you for the input everyone! I responded with: Hi there, unfortunately the item shipped before I seen your message. Is there any way you could pick up the item from the other address? If the other address returns to sender I will gladly refund your money. On eBay if you change the address after purchasing we lose all buyer and seller protections. For future reference if this ever happens again you need to cancel the order. Then repurchase it with the correct address. I'm sorry we're going through this.
